  • Nigerian govt revokes additional 924 mining licences

The Federal Government has revoked additional 924 dormant mining licenses in the country.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja.

He also decried the licence racketeering by some Nigerians.

The minister lamented that mining licence racketeering was impeding the development of the sector and obstructing genuine investors from showing interest in Nigeria’s mines.

Alake revealed that 528 exploration licences, 22 mining leases, 101 quarry licences and 273 small-scale mining licences were revoked by the government.

He stressed that a 30-day grace was given to defaulters to rectify their statuses and explain the reasons for dormancy on the sites allocated to them in line with constitutional provisions.

He said: The 963 licences were published in the official gazette of the Federal Government in December 2023 awaiting revocation.

“Out of these, only 39 of the listed licence holders responded to the warning as they either moved to site immediately or they stated challenges hindering their operations.

“The decision to revoke the licences was taken to sanitise and reposition the mining sector to boost Nigeria’s economic profile and to accelerate its industrialisation.”

The federal government in November last year revoked 1,663 mining licences over failure by the owners to pay statutory charges and other dues.”

  • Court Jails Three for N17.6m Fraud in Maiduguri

Court Jails Three for N17.6m Fraud in Maiduguri

Court Jails Three for N17.6m Fraud in Maiduguri

The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, April 22, 2024, secured the conviction and sentencing of three fraudsters before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri.

The convicts are Mohammed Dogo, Babagoni Mustapha Ali, and Dookenger Odey Takon.

Dogo and Ali were arraigned on April 8, 2024, on one-count separate charge bordering on criminal misappropriation to the tune of N6,360,422.00 (Six Million Three Hundred and Sixty Thousand, Four Hundred and Twenty-Two Naira).

Takon , on the other hand, was arraigned on September 24, 2020, on a four-count charge bordering on cheating, obtaining by false pretence, forgery, and criminal misappropriation to the tune of N11, 300,000.00 (Eleven Million, Three Hundred Thousand Naira).

The charge against Dogo read: “That you Mohammed Dogo, between 2012 to 2018 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly misappropriated the entire sum of N1,660,422.94 (One Million, Six Hundred and Sixty Thousand, Four Hundred and Twenty-Two Naira, Ninety Four Kobo), where you opened an Account Number; 1015975677 with an Account Name; Audu Umar Abdullahi (now deceased) without the consent of his legal heirs for your personal use and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 of Penal Code Cap. 102 Laws of Borno State of Nigeria and Punishable under Section 309 of the same Law.”

The charge against Takon read: “That you Dookenger Odey Takon whilst being a Director of X-Traodinaire Designs Ltd. And X-Traodinaire Designs Ltd. sometime in September 2018 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud obtained the sum of N10, 500,000.00 (Ten Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) only from Abatcha Ana’s under the false pretence that the sum represent payment for the execution of a purported contract of constructing a Mopol container and store awarded to X-Traodinaire Designs Ltd. By a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), International Organization for Migration (I.O.M) which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and Punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”

The two defendants pleaded “guilty” to their separate counts while Takon pleaded “not guilty” and the matter proceeded to trial.

Counsel to the prosecution Muhktar Ali Ahmed, Faruqu Muhammad, and Aliyu D. Abdulmalik presented four witnesses and tendered several documents as exhibits before the court.

Justice Fadawu thereafter convicted them as charged and sentenced Dogo to one-year imprisonment without an option of fine.

Ali was sentenced to one-year imprisonment with an option of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) fine. The Judge further ordered the convict to restitute the sum of N1.9m to his victim and in default to serve a three-year jail term.

After that, Justice Fadawu convicted and sentenced Takon to seven years imprisonment for the offence of obtaining by false pretence without an option of fine.

In the same vein, the court sentenced Takon for cheating to one-year imprisonment with an option of N100,000 while X-Traodinaire Designs Ltd shall pay a fine of N100,000.

For the offence of using a forged document, she was jailed to a year imprisonment with an option of N400,000 while the judge awarded a four-year jail term for criminal misappropriation with the option of N400,000 as a fine.

The Judge ordered Takon to pay the sum of N11.3m to her victim; in default, she should serve a five-year jail term. The prison terms shall run concurrently while in default of the restitution, the five years imprisonment should run consecutively according to the judge.

The three convicts bagged their imprisonment when they were arrested for various offences ranging from misappropriation, cheating, forgery to obtaining under false pretence. They were charged to court and convicted.

  • Stop Ex Parte Motions – Akpabio Urges NJC

The Senate President of Nigeria, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday urged the National Judicial Council to stop ex parte motions by judges of the Federal and state courts who misuse it to stall justice.

Akpabio made the call at the National Summit on Justice 2024, held in Abuja, where he noted that delays in judicial process harm the justice system and make it seem inaccessible.

He said, “I will not be telling the truth if I say that we at the National Assembly are not aware of the delays and backlogs plaguing our courts, which not only deny timely justice but undermine faith in our judicial system.

“These delays harm our society’s most vulnerable and create an environment where justice is seen as inaccessible and inefficient.

“In an era where technology has transformed so many sectors, it is critical that we harness its potential within our judicial processes to enhance speed and transparency,” Akpabio said.

“We must try and curb the misuse of ex parte orders in political cases by our judges. To curb it, the National Judicial Council must exercise stringent oversight.

“We recommend prompt and decisive punishment for judges who are found to abuse their authority in this manner,”

He also called for the integration of technology in Nigeria’s justice system, explaining that the potential of technology like in other sectors, can be harnessed in the nation’s justice sector to help with curbing delays and backlogs being experienced currently.

The senate president said NASS would ensure provisions required to make the needed judicial reforms a success in order to actualise the birth of a judicial system that’s fit for the 21st century was made available.

“We are committed to budgeting for the implementation of judicial reforms that will include the adoption of digital tools to manage cases more effectively and ensure that justice is neither delayed nor denied.

“This journey requires collective effort. I call upon all stakeholders, including my colleagues in both the legislative and executive branches, as well as the judiciary itself, to support these vital reforms. Together, we can build a justice system that is fit for the 21st century”, Akpabio said.

He asked that reforms be made in the area of interlocutory appeals, AGFs permission be sought before judgement is executed and misuse of ex parte orders in political cases by judges be stopped.

“In addressing specific reforms in the justice sector, we want to re-emphasise some key vital areas that are worrisome and incidentally most Nigerians seek reforms on them.

“It is essential that we reform our approach to interlocutory appeals in civil cases.

“Currently, these appeals often cause unnecessary delays, prolonging litigation and burdening our courts.”

“As was done in the criminal jurisprudence during the enactment of Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, we propose that all appeals in civil cases should be taken only after the conclusion of the substantive case.”

“This change will accelerate judicial processes, reduce backlog, and ensure that litigations are not unduly prolonged by intermediate appeals.”

“Another area requiring urgent reform is the need for obtaining the Attorney General’s consent before executing judgments.

“This requirement often acts as a bottleneck, delaying justice and undermining the autonomy of our judicial system.

“We propose modifying this requirement to facilitate a swifter execution of judgments, thereby enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our justice system.

In our view to enhance efficiency while maintaining necessary checks, we propose replacing the requirement for the Attorney General’s consent with a mandatory notification system.

“Upon receiving a judgement against the government, the relevant authorities will notify the Attorney General immediately in writing.”

“Following the notification, the Attorney General will have a specified period, say 30 days, to respond. The response could involve initiating an appeal or settling the matter directly. This timeline ensures prompt action and prevents undue delays in justice delivery.”

“If there is no response from the Attorney General within this period, the judgement will be executed automatically.

This measure is crucial to prevent stalling and ensure that judgments are respected and enforced on time. In cases where the judgement comes from a final court, the option to appeal is not available.”

“Therefore, the Attorney General’s response would be primarily directed towards settlement.”

“This approach ensures that the government acts responsibly as a litigant and respects the decisions of our highest court in the land.”

“Reforms like this foster trust in the justice system and improve the overall efficiency of legal proceedings involving the government.”

  • “That girl’s got stabbed” Frightened pupils scream as multiple stabbings unfolds at UK school

    "That girl

Terrifying video footage has captured the aftermath of a school stabbing which left three people injured as the building was put under lockdown.

A boy was heard screaming “that girl’s got stabbed” in the short clip that circulated online shortly after the attack at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman school in Ammanford, Wales on Wednesday afternoon, April 24.

Parents say a female teacher and at least one girl pupil are feared to be the victims of the stabbing, while police confirmed a lone suspect has been detained.

A governor at the school said she was told two of the three victims were staff, and was not aware if any children had been injured.

Footage of the incident was quickly shared on social media.

    "That girl

The clip appears to show two girls on the ground in an outside area of the school before one is pulled away by staff. The other pupil is supported by school workers as teachers try to clear the area of students who watched the attack unfold.

One boy can be heard saying: “What the f***, what the f***?”

Another says: “That girl’s got stabbed.”

The first boy responds: “Some girl just got stabbed. What the f***”.

A teacher then orders the students to “get to class now”.

Multiple police cars and two air ambulance helicopters surrounded the school in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, after reports of a major incident.

    "That girl

Parents said there was a heavy police presence and air ambulances landing nearby the playing fields at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman school in Ammanford.

A police statement said: “Three people have been injured and are receiving treatment. One person has been arrested and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

Children were locked inside classrooms on a so-called “code red” while police dashed to the scene.

The Dyfed Powys force statement said: “Emergency services remain at scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue. We are working closely with the school and Carmarthenshire County Council.

“We are aware that there is footage of the incident currently circulating on social media. We would ask that this is removed to avoid contempt of court and distress to those affected. We would ask the people do not speculate while there is a police investigation ongoing.”

School governor Cllr Karen Davies, said: “I have been told someone has been arrested and that two members of staff have been stabbed, but have no confirmation on how serious the injuries are. I send my thoughts to those injured and all the people there. I know how well the school rehearsed lockdown and I am sure everything is under control. It is shocking. You hear about these things happening in Manchester and London but it is literally our comprehensive here.”

  • German Police bust alleged Nigerian scam dating ring

German authorities have arrested eleven individuals suspected of being members of a Nigerian mafia group involved in a large-scale dating scam. The announcement came on Wednesday from Bavarian police, a state police force in southern Germany.

According to a police statement, the arrested individuals are believed to be part of the Black Axe gang, a known criminal organization with international operations. While the Black Axe is involved in various criminal activities, German police specifically linked this group to dating scams and money laundering.

The dating trick was a “modern form of marriage fraud.

“Using false identities, the fraudsters for example, signalled their intention to marry and, in the course of further contact, repeatedly demand money under various pretexts,” police said.

According to the police, the suspects, who all held Nigerian citizenship and were aged between 29 and 53, were arrested in nationwide raids on Tuesday.

Law enforcement swooped on 19 properties, including both homes and asylum shelters, police said.

The Black Axe gang had “strict hierarchical structures under leadership in Nigeria” operating different territorial units, police said.

Dating scams typically involve fraudulently creating online profiles to build romantic relationships with victims. The scammers then exploit these emotional connections to manipulate victims into sending money or revealing personal financial information.

Financial losses from dating scams can be significant, making them a serious crime. The number of victims involved in this particular case is not yet known.

German authorities are likely to continue their investigation to uncover the full extent of the scam and identify any additional parties involved. This case also highlights the growing international reach of online fraud schemes and the importance of online safety measures.

  • Why I Am Not Qualified For Super Eagles Coaching Job – Enyeama

    Vincent Enyeama

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama has opened up on the reason he did not apply for the vacant managerial position in the team.

The Super Eagles coaching job became vacant after the Nations Cup when Jose Peseiro’s contract was not extended and a lot of ex-internationals have been linked with the position.

Top among them is the duo of Emmanuel Amunike, and Finidi George, who was in charge of the team for the two international friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in March.

The former Lille goalkeeper has now shed more light on his refusal to apply for the Super Eagles job while also providing update on his area of interest since he retired from football.

Enyeama said: “No, no, no. It’s not that I am not interested; it’s just that I am not certified.

“For you to be able to coach the Super Eagles, you must be certified. That’s the minimum standard.

“That’s the number one reason, and the fact that I have been very busy developing and managing my hotel has taken a lot of my attention, and that business is the most important thing for me now.

“So, football is like number two for me now, unless just one day the Nigeria Football Federation says, ‘Please come and share your wealth of experience in this area with these players,’ then it becomes a different thing altogether.

“For now, I have to wait until I get the necessary certificate before I can say this is where I want to coach or the area where I can support the national teams.”

Enyeama also mentioned that he is interested in becoming a full team coach and not a goalkeeper trainer.

He said: “Whatever I am doing now is how to become a full coach of a team, and not just a goalie’s trainer. If I have to be a goalie’s trainer then, it has to be with very young ones in junior teams because they are the ones you really teach. They are still growing and open to learning new things; with these ones you can easily transmit what you want.

“It will be nice to manage the full team because, as a goalkeeper, you always have a full view of the field and what everyone is doing at any given time. And that’s why most goalies make good coaches, and most midfielders do well too, as we can see in (Pep) Guardiola, (Xabi) Alonso, Xavi. They were all midfielders.”

Enyeama made 101 appearances for the Super Eagles and he represented the team at the FIFA World Cup tournaments in 2002, 2014 and 2018.

He was part of the team that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations trophy under the tutelage of the late Stephen Keshi.

The Nigeria Football Federation is expected to name the new Super Eagles coach in the next few days ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in June.
