A Federal Capital Territory High sitting in Apo, Abuja has ordered the arrest of former Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Prof. Ladi A. Hamalai over failure to appear in court pertaining to corruption allegations.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arraigned Hamalai over the corruption case preferred against her.

The presiding judge, Hon. Justice C. O. Oba, on Monday, issued the bench warrant for the arrest of the Professor following her repeated failure to show up in the court.

The ICPC Counsel had informed the court that this is the fourth consecutive time that the former DG of NILS failed to honour the invitation of the Commission to appear in the case having been properly served.

In the suit charge number: FCT/HC/CR/312/23, the ICPC is accusing Professor Hamalai of using her office to confer corrupt advantage upon herself by making a request for the sum of N12 million to rent a guest house for her office but used the amount to purchase a property for herself at Gwarimpa area of Abuja.

The Commission, in a four-count charge also accused the former DG of requesting for another sum of N29m for the furnishing of the building as government guest house.

ICPC Prosecutor, Michael Adesola told the court that the former DG was served the arraignment notice but was surprised she was not in court.

On her part, Counsel to Professor Hamalai, Olayemi Afolayan informed the court that her client was sick, hence the absence.

Justice Oba however ruled that having failed to appear in court, the ICPC should effect the arrest of the former DG and produce her in court at the next adjourned date. The matter was adjourned till 9th September 2024.

Tiffany Haddish reveals she has suffered eight miscarriages amid endometriosis battle

Tiffany Haddish has suffered eight miscarriages amid her battle with endometriosis, with her most recent loss happening last year.

The 44-year-old comedian, who dated Common between 2020-2021, disclosed her personal struggles to People on Thursday, April 25.

She said: “It’s so f***ing devastating.

“It’s like, I won’t know why there’s so much blood. And then I go to the doctor and they’re like, ‘Oh, you’re miscarrying right now.”‘ And I just D&C (dilation and curettage, a procedure to remove pregnancy tissue).”

Tiffany continued: “Every time I find out I’m pregnant, I’m like, ‘Don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t do nothing.’ Even if I don’t really want [the baby], I still try to give it a chance.”

Haddish is currently celibate yet dating “multiple guys” but she’s not certain she wants to remarry after her two divorces in 2011 and 2013 from ex-husband William Stewart.

“There is a part of me that wants to [be a mother],” the Emmy and Grammy winner said.

“I’ve got all this love, I should give it to somebody who can grow with it.”

Tiffany suffers from long excruciating periods, fainting spells from the pain, and she’s had to undergo surgery to remove fibroids due to the chronic condition where the endometrium extends outside of the uterus and can result in pelvic pain.

“I’m pretty sure the devil is real,” said Haddish, who was prescribed a hormone medication. “Because the first day of my period, no matter what, the devil goes into overdrive. I feel like my life gets turned upside down…The pain is crazy. It feels like somebody is kicking me in my back.”

However, she said hopefully: “The last two months have not been as bad. I just feel drowsy. But I’ve been working out even more. And I’ve gone from 11 days [on my period] to four or five, which is kind of normal, so that’s nice.”

  • Show Public Resentment against Corruption-Olukoyede Charges Corps members

Show Public Resentment against Corruption-Olukoyede Charges Corps members

Show Public Resentment against Corruption-Olukoyede Charges Corps members

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has charged members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, across the country to show public resentment against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption, in order to put the nation on a sustainable path of development.

He gave this charge on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Awgu in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, while addressing the 2024 Batch ‘A’, Stream 2 Corps members.

Speaking on the “Roles of Youth in Fighting Corruption to Promote Economic Growth”, Olukoyede said “every challenge around us today can be traced to the consequences of corruption. The rising troubles of unemployment, insecurity, poverty, diseases, low life expectancy, hunger, robbery, kidnapping and others are the results of mismanagement, misapplication and misplacement of our resources by those entrusted with them. We have come to a situation of dire straits in our lives, all because of the menace of corruption”.

The EFCC’s boss, who spoke through Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Onjefu Obe, pointed out that, economic and financial crimes directly put the fortunes of the economy and polity of the nation in jeopardy. He noted that criminality of such a dimension puts foreign direct investment in uncertainty, slows down genuine efforts to build formidable structures in industries and greatly throws open the nation to avoidable complications.

While calling on the corps members to shun internet fraud, the anti-graft czar charged them on investing their time in bringing up creative ideas and drives that can grow the economy, as many youths are getting embroiled in activities and tendencies that portend grave dangers for their future. “The scourge of internet fraud has become a pervasive trouble in the land. Youths are getting embroiled in all sorts of cybercrime to the detriment of their future and the image of our nation. This is one undesirable situation that calls for concern. My message to you this morning is, begin to look inward and challenge your creative abilities to bring up ideas, perspectives and drives that can grow the economy”, he said.

In Yenogoa, at the NYSC Camp in Boro Town, Kiama, Bayelsa State, Olukoyede tasked corps members to embrace a paradigm shift that emphasises development and hatred for internet crimes. Speaking through the Inspector of the EFCC, IE1 Otagada Sunday Ogar, he stated that “a paradigm shift to developmental initiatives has come, let every youth embrace it. One critical group of stakeholders are the youths.

Apart from the fact that youths are considered as the leaders of tomorrow, most economic crimes especially cybercrimes are committed by the youths. The trend should no longer continue”

At the NYSC orientation camp in Kaduna, Olukoyede spoke through the Kaduna Zonal Director, Dr Benedict Ubi, and enjoined corps members to be community advocates, whistleblowers who never hesitate to speak out against injustice.

Olukoyede also spoke through Superintendent of the EFCC, SE Catherine Okeke at the Kubwa Orientation Camp, Abuja. He called on corps members to offer strong resistance against corruption and be intelligence-gatherers.

In Ilorin, at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, the EFCC’s boss drew attention to the Commission’s corruption reporting device. The application, the Eagle Eye App is a digital means of conveying information to the EFCC without necessarily disclosing any identity. “Only ensure that the information supplied to the EFCC is true and credible,” he said.

In NYSC Orientation Camp, Okada, Edo State, the EFCC boss who was represented by Williams Oseghale, warned corps members against taking shortcuts to wealth. Olukoyede also addressed corps members in Lagos, Ibadan, Sokoto, Makurdi, Uyo, Maiduguri, Keffi and other locations across the country against the menace of corruption and the need to build corporate synergy against it.

  • How WhatsApp Message Moved Me Into Repairing Atiku Abubakar Way—A/Ibom Governor

    Atiku-Abubakar-Way-

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno has revealed how a WhatsApp message someone showed him while in a church service compelled him to repair Atiku Abubakar Way.

The governor revealed this at the inauguration of flood control and road projects at Atiku Abubakar Way in Uyo. He said he was ready to continue depending on constructive engagements with the people to administer governance to the people.

The projects included the construction of a 1.3KM, 8 meters deep 2X2X0.3M Underground Flood Control Tunnel along Atiku Abubakar Way, reconstruction of a section of Atiku Abubakar Way with Street Light, and reconstruction of Afaha Ube Street, Uyo.

At the event which had former President Goodluck Jonathan’s special guest, Governor Eno revealed that, “the projects we are gathered here to commission is a product of fate and circumstance.

He said: “Someone sent me a picture during one of the events we had in church, it was a picture of this road on a rainy day fully flooded.

“So I showed it to the deputy governor. The road was completely impassable. And I told the deputy governor that we must visit this place immediately from the church programme.

“What this shows is that all of us can collectively run this state. The money is not my money but belongs to all of us.

“Anything you see that you believe government should intervene, you should bring it to our table. You can draw our attention to such issues and we will work with you.

“We try to run an open government, one across party lines because knowledge is not based on one person or in one party. We can do it together. Together one of us can be in government. But please, as government fixes these things, do not destroy them.

“Do not vandalize projects that government has spent a lot of money to build. It is not my money, it is our collective money. And so if you destroy government property, know that it is part of your money that you are destroying.”

Inaugurating the project, former President Goodluck Jonathan, expressed satisfaction with the developments witnessed under Pastor Eno’s tenure in less than a year.

He said that from the caliber of people in his team and the nature of projects he has embarked upon, the Akwa Ibom Governor is performing well.

“Nobody expects you to conduct a major project and complete it in hundred days.

“But if you see somebody who has focus, in the first hundred days, the caliber of people he recruits to work with him will show in their credibility, people knowledgeable enough to drive the departments of government.

“Looking at this project, you’ll see how the road has been transformed from a once flooding area to what we all witness today. In a world where flooding through global warming is affecting places like Dubai that is in the desert, this project reflects a governor that has focus.

“This project that we are commissioning today is a very critical one and it shows a focused leadership and we must commend the governor and his team.

“I am happy that he said that the state money is not his money. I know of a governor who whenever he talks about the state money he refers to it as his money. He appropriates the state money to be his money but Eno calls it everyone’s money.

“I want to say if you see somebody trying to vandalize the state or federal government’s infrastructure around you, you must report the person because it is your money that was used in doing that project”, Jonathan said.
