    Cross River representative in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Rt. Hon. Orok Duke has urged youths in the state to apply for the internship scheme announced by the Commission.

    Duke said the Niger Delta Youth Internship Scheme which is a one year programme seeks to train and empower 10,000 youths in the nine states of the region, with monthly stipend of N50,000.

    While calling on Cross River youths to avail themselves of the opportunity, the NDDC Commissioner declared that the scheme would go a long way to complement the effort of the Prince Bassey Otu-led administration in the area of youth empowerment. He vowed to ensure that the state gets its due allocation of beneficiaries and a level playing ground for all applicants.

    He further stated that through the NDDC internship scheme, Cross River youths between the ages of 18 and 45, will be trained in various artisanal ventures ranging from agriculture to other crafts.

    According to him, “This internship scheme represents a vital step toward realizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reformative agenda, and it is something we have all been waiting for as Nigerians so that our country may continue growing further.”

    Orok Duke shines as NUJ applauds NDDC for rehabilitating roads, installing solar lights in Calabar

    The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has applauded the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the rehabilitation of roads and the installation of solar lights in some of the streets in Calabar metropolis.

    The commendation is contained in a communique issued at the end of the NUJ Congress held at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar on Wednesday, 24th July 2024.

    “Congress commends the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the installation of solar lights in some streets in the Calabar Metropolis and the rehabilitation of some roads in Calabar,” the communique read in part.

    The Congress which was presided over by the Council Chairman, Comrade Archibong Bassey, also highlighted various issues affecting the Union, Cross River State and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

    The journalists also commended the State and Federal Government for improved security, and groundbreaking road construction as well as frowned at the delay of work at the Calabar-Itu road which almost took the life of a journalist and her family two weeks ago.

    Recall that NDDC under its current Commissioner representing Cross River, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, has rehabilitated roads in Etta-Agbor, K. Duke Street off Chamley and its environs.

    Duke has also overseen the Commission’s installation of solar street lights in some of the streets, Immigration Service, Nigeria Police Command, and other places, in addition to the donation of waste receptacles to the state government for effective waste evacuation in the city.

    The NDDC through Orok Duke has distributed palliatives to communities affected by floods including Bayside and Esierebom in Calabar, Ikot Offiong in Odukpani, Returnees in Bakassi, Akpabuyo and other parts of the state.

    Duke has consistently affirmed that his work at the interventionist agency is to complement the effort of Cross River State government.

    “We intend to add value to what this present government is doing. On our own part at NDDC, we are going to insist that all those parts that have been neglected and are still suffering will be taken care of,” he said.

    The Commissioner representing Cross River State in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, on Sunday attended the South South Zonal meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), held at Metro Hotel, Calabar.

    The meeting which was exclusively for bigwigs of the party in the zone was graced by the Senate President, Dr Godswill Akpabio and the Governor of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Otu.

    In his remarks, President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr Akpabio, heaped praises on the NDDC, stating that “So far NDDC is doing a great job. It is now commissioning projects everywhere!”

    The letter, signed by PC Ogbodo, the Comptroller of Immigration Service, praised the NDDC’s commitment to enhancing the security and visibility of the NIS command through the provision of sustainable energy solutions. The installation of solar-powered lights has significantly improved the operational environment of the command, ensuring better safety and efficiency during nighttime operations.

    The Commissioner representing Cross River State in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, has said that every Cross Riverian is entitled to access the free medical outreach that would be carried out by the Commission from the 16th – 22nd June, 2024 at the General Hospital, Akamkpa.

    Duke stated this Wednesday in Calabar during an interview with journalists.

    According to the NDDC Commissioner, “the medical outreach is strictly an NDDC project approved by the presidency. It’s been on for 15 years, long before we enter the office. As the Commissioner and Rep of NDDC I can’t fold my hands and watch anybody usurp our duties or hijack a federal government project.

    “Every Cross Riverian is free to attend the programme on the 16th – 22nd June in Akamkpa. It is not restricted to three local government areas. I represent the three senatorial districts so the three senatorial districts are suppose to benefit from every programme that we have.”

    Duke, however said he would ensure Cross River is not shortchanged in the sharing and allocation of projects in the interventionist agency, stating that he is working towards drawing the Commission’s attention to the plight of refugees and internally displaced persons in northern part of the state.

    He argued that as the only APC-controlled state in the South South geo-political zone, Cross River ought to be given a place of importance, adding that the state governor, Prince Bassey Edet Otu has so far shown leadership and unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of the people, hence the NDDC should complement his efforts and encourage him.

    Saturday 8th June, 2024 was a day marked with excitement in Bayside, Calabar South local government area as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) distributed hundreds of relief materials to members of the riverine community.

    The distribution of the relief materials is an effort by the NDDC that aims to cushion the effects of flooding on distressed communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

    Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, the Commissioner representing Cross River in NDDC, who carried out the distribution exercise at playground of Efe Ekpe Efik Iboku in Eyamba Street, said the relief materials were a palliative measure and intervention by the Commission to ameliorate the sufferings of the people in the area.

    He disclosed that NDDC as an interventionist agency is committed to providing succor to communities in the 6 Niger Delta States, especially in this time of difficulties.

    “The palliatives we have brought today might not be too much but it will at least go a long way in assisting you.

    “The materials are made of both edibles and materials that can be used to earn a living, we encourage you to put them to judicious use while I can assure you that we as an agency will try to assist you as much as we can,” Duke said.

    The Calabar South Constituency 1 community liaison officer, Hon. Bassey Edem Effiwatt who spoke on behalf of the community, thanked the NDDC representative for considering them as one of the beneficiaries, especially in this critical time.

    The relief materials distributed include mattresses, bags of rice, bags of beans, wheel barrows, fishing nets, shovels, cartons of noodles, pillows, mats, cartons of tomatoes and other essential household items.

    Relief materials estimated to worth millions of naira have been delivered to Eto Mkpe Yellow Duke community in Akpabuyo local government area of Cross River State as part of intervention by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in distressed communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

    The Commissioner representing Cross River in the NDDC, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, who personally delivered the relief materials to the community on Monday 3rd June 2024, disclosed that the items were part of the 2021/2022 palliatives distributed to flood affected communities in the Niger Delta area.

    He explained that Cross River did not get its share of the palliatives as at then, hence when he assumed office, he took up the matter and subsequently secured approval for the release of the items to the state.

    According to him, “it behoves on me to identify certain afflicted communities to try and augment and remedy some of their plights. We’ve been going around, and today we are in Eto Mkpe community to carry out just a simple assignment and observe a little ceremony of handing over some palliatives to the community. We have rice, indomie, slippers, mosquito nets, fishing nets and other essential items that can help jumpstart some of those afflicted.

    “We are just an interventionist agency. Ours is to try to assist. And we pray that in assisting, whatever little token we have to give will not and should not bring acrimony within the community. That is why we simply direct the gifts to the leadership of the community. So we pray in peace and harmony they would be able to allow the rest of the community to enjoy the little benefits coming from NDDC.”

    Speaking further, the NDDC Commissioner said “Let the records show that as much as we want to help out, we will help out in tandem with what the state government is doing. We’ll try and strive as hard as possible to add value to what our governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu is doing. Where we can we’ll do. Where he can augment he’ll augment. We work together. Let that one not be in doubt.”

    He also stated that aside the relief materials, road projects would also be executed in the community when the Commission’s budget for the year gets approval of the National Assembly. He revealed that the projects had already been captured in the NDDC fiscal document.

    Receiving the relief materials on behalf of Eto Mkpe community, the village head, His Highness Anthony Edem Nyong, thanked the NDDC Commissioner and prayed God’s blessings and protection upon him and the Commission.

    Similarly, the youth leader, Mr Felix Nsa Effanga, said that the youths were happy over the relief materials delivered to the community by the state NDDC representative. He thanked Hon. Orok Duke for the ongoing solar light installation project and other projects that would be brought to Eto Mkpe community in the near future.

    The event ended with a town hall meeting where men, women and youths of Eto Mkpe community interfaced with the NDDC representative, who then felt their pulses.

    So far, NDDC had in the last two weeks distributed relief materials to Ikot Offiong community in Odukpani local government area, Esierebom community in Calabar South local government area, Bakassi returnees in Bakassi local government area and Eto Mkpe community in Akpabuyo local government area.
