  • Rangers International marry Ikorodu City at the cathedral in Enugu

Rangers International picked a hard fought 2-0 victory over Ikorodu City at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Monday, to end their 2 game winless streak in Nigeria Premier football league match day 22.

This win also marked a double over Ikorodu City, having defeated them 1-0 in Lagos on match day 2.

The match saw Rangers create several chances, but they were wasteful in front of goal, registering 16 attempts, with only three on target. Ikorodu City, despite having 10 attempts, failed to hit the target at all, struggling to break down the Rangers defense.

The game began with Ikorodu City’s Toyeeb Ajeyigbe testing Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Abadullahi in the 10th minute, but the keeper was quick to make a comfortable save.

Rangers began asserting themselves as the first half progressed, and just before the break, Godwin Obaje opened the scoring for the home side, giving them a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

After the break, Ikorodu City looked to find an equalizer, and their goalkeeper, James, was called into action in the 61st minute when he pulled off a crucial save in a one-on-one situation with Obaje.

Despite the save, Rangers continued to press forward, but they remained wasteful in front of goal, failing to capitalize on multiple opportunities.

As the match neared its conclusion, Isaac Saviour added a second for Rangers in the 89th minute, but the goal was officially credited as an own goal after Saviour’s shot deflected off Ikorodu City defender Victor Ekujah, sealing the 2-0 win for the home side.

The victory moves Rangers up to 4th place, while Ikorodu City, despite their best efforts, drop to 7th position on the table, having failed to score in the match.

  • Golden Eaglets misses out on 2025 U17 AFCON as CAF confirms 12-team format

Nigeria’s hopes of competing at the 2025 CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco have been officially dashed, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirming that the Golden Eaglets did not qualify.

The five-time world champions, who have made a record ten appearances at the tournament, fell short in the qualifiers.

Manu Garba’s side finished third at the WAFU B U17 Championship last year, securing a 3-2 victory over Ghana to claim the bronze medal. However, only the top two teams from the regional qualifiers earned automatic spots for Morocco 2025, leaving Nigeria out of contention.

In recent weeks, there was speculation that Golden Eaglets could still qualify if CAF expanded the tournament to 16 teams, following FIFA’s decision to increase Africa’s U17 World Cup slots.

However, CAF put an end to those hopes on Monday, confirming that the U17 AFCON will retain its 12-team format.

FIFA’s recent decision at its Bangkok Congress to expand the U17 World Cup to 48 teams, increasing Africa’s representation to 10, had led many to believe that CAF would adjust its qualification process to allow more teams.

However, the governing body has opted to maintain its current format, ensuring that only the best-performing nations from the regional qualifiers will make it to Morocco.

As a result, Nigeria, despite its rich history in youth football, will not be among the teams competing at the continental tournament.

  • Broos sets qualification target as South Africa battles Nigeria for 2026 World Cup spot

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has outlined the points tally he believes will secure Bafana Bafana’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they battle Nigeria for the top spot in Group C of the African qualifiers.

With only one automatic qualification spot available in the group, competition is fierce. Nigeria, three-time African champions, have struggled in their campaign so far, failing to secure a win in their first four matches.

Meanwhile, South Africa remains well-positioned to qualify for their first World Cup since hosting the tournament in 2010.

Currently, Bafana Bafana sits second in the group with seven points, level with Rwanda and Benin, while Nigeria languishes in fifth place with three draws and a defeat.

The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams has given Africa nine automatic qualification spots, with each group winner securing a place at the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Having led South Africa to an unbeaten qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Broos has mapped out his team’s route to the World Cup. They will host Lesotho in Polokwane on March 17 before traveling to Ivory Coast to face Benin a week later.

The Belgian coach believes winning both fixtures will bring South Africa closer to the estimated 17 points needed to edge out Nigeria.

“We have seven points now, and if we add six in March, that takes us to 13. Then we have four more games left, totaling 12 points. I think 16-17 points should be enough to qualify,” Broos told reporters, as quoted by Africa Football.

“All teams are still in the race, so March will be crucial in shaping the group’s outcome. Winning against Lesotho and Benin is vital for our qualification hopes.”

Broos also urged South African fans to manage their expectations if the team qualifies, emphasizing that advancing beyond the group stage would be a realistic goal.

“We need to be realistic. If South Africa qualifies, we shouldn’t talk about quarter-finals or semi-finals,” Broos added.

“Our ambition should be to progress past the group stage. After that, facing teams like Argentina or Brazil would be an incredible challenge, but we can still be proud of our journey.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria has appointed Malian coach Éric Chelle to revive their faltering World Cup hopes. The Super Eagles will face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March, with both matches crucial to turning their campaign around.

“The worst thing is to buy for the sake of buying,” Genesio said. “It really has to be a player who fits into the principles of the game and the spirit of this group.”

Akpom, 28, described by Lille as “technical, hard-working, powerful, and impactful,” began his career at Arsenal but struggled to make an impression, leading to loan spells at Hull City, Brighton, and other clubs.

He later enjoyed stints with PAOK Salonika and Middlesbrough before joining Ajax.

Still Waiting for Super Eagles Call-Up

Akpom has long expressed his desire to represent Nigeria but has yet to receive a national team call-up.

“I don’t know why I haven’t been called up yet—maybe because there are many top strikers,” he told Oma Akatugba.

  • “Southampton keeps raising the price” – Trabzonspor President on failed Onuachu deal

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan has claimed that Southampton prevented Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu from securing a permanent move to Turkey, despite the club’s efforts to meet their demands.

Onuachu impressed during his loan spell at Trabzonspor last season, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 25 appearances.

The Turkish side was eager to retain him permanently but faced constant roadblocks from Southampton.

“We had agreed with Onuachu. We’re still seeing each other. Southampton asked for €7 million, we gave them that.

Then they asked for €10 million, we went up to €9 million with bonuses, and suddenly they increased the asking price to €15 million,” Dogan revealed, as quoted by Sports Witness.

“They weren’t going to sell him to us. So we won’t force a deal. If it’s not on our terms, we won’t make this transfer.”

Onuachu has made 16 appearances for Southampton this season, scoring twice, including a goal in their 2-1 win against Ipswich Town.

Bright Osayi-Samuel time at Fenerbahce could be over as the Nigerian right-back is reportedly set to be excluded from the club’s squad due to contract dispute.
