  • Stanley Nwabali commits to Chippa United FC

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Bobo Nwabali has committed his future to Chippa United by signing a new three-year contract.

The former Enyimba International shot-stopper, who earned a surprise call-up to José Peseiro’s 25-man squad for AFCON 2023, has quickly established himself as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Nwabali’s standout performances during the tournament in Ivory Coast, including two clean sheets in three group stage matches and a penalty shootout masterclass in the semi-final against South Africa, solidified his position as Nigeria’s top goalkeeper.

His impressive form attracted interest from several clubs, including South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs. However, Nwabali has ended the speculation by renewing his contract with the Chilli Boys.

  • Nottingham Forest coach backs Taiwo Awoniyi after penalty miss

Nottingham Forest coach Nuno Espirito Santo has shown support for Taiwo Awoniyi, despite the striker’s penalty miss in their EFL Cup loss to Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin two seasons ago, has struggled with fitness issues since his arrival. The 27-year-old striker came to the club with high expectations after his impressive performances in Germany, but injuries have held him back. As a result, English striker Chris Wood has taken over as the first-choice forward at Nottingham Forest.

Awoniyi started on the bench in Forest’s first two Premier League games this season but was given his first start against Newcastle in the EFL Cup. Unfortunately, he could not score during regular time and missed the final penalty in the shootout, which cost Forest the game.

Despite this, Nuno Espirito Santo was positive about Awoniyi’s performance. He explained that he allowed Awoniyi to play the entire match to help him regain his fitness.

“It was a good performance. In the end, he was clearly lacking some energy, but he worked very hard until the end,” Nuno said. “He had two or three good chances to score. We want to give Taiwo this opportunity to improve his fitness because we know the talent is there.”

Nuno also acknowledged the missed penalty but emphasized the need to support Awoniyi and move on quickly, as the team has another match coming up on Saturday against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

  • Paul Onuachu close to Trabzonspor move

Super Eagles and Southampton striker Paul Ebere Onuachu is on the brink of joining Turkish side Trabzonspor before the transfer window closes in two days.

The 30-year-old forward had an impressive loan spell with Trabzonspor during the 2023/2024 season, where he scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 21 league appearances. His performance left the Turkish club eager to secure his services on a permanent basis.

Trabzonspor initially offered €7 million to Southampton in a bid to bring back the former KRC Genk striker, but the Saints rejected the offer, holding out for a €10 million fee. This led Trabzonspor to explore other options, including Dutch striker Wout Weghorst, who ultimately signed for Ajax.

However, according to Sport Witness, Trabzonspor has renewed their pursuit of Onuachu and are now close to finalizing a deal with Southampton.

The striker, standing at 2.01 meters tall, is reportedly eager to make the move permanent, a sentiment echoed by Trabzonspor’s president, who confirmed that negotiations are progressing well.

While Southampton initially insisted on a €10 million fee, they may now be willing to accept Trabzonspor’s offer of €7 million, plus add-ons, given that Onuachu appears surplus to requirements at St Mary’s.

Trabzonspor remains confident that an agreement will be reached before the English transfer window shuts, and with the Turkish window remaining open for over two weeks beyond that deadline, they are not under as much pressure to finalize the deal immediately.

This move would see Onuachu continue his career in Turkey, where he has already made a significant impact, and provide him with a new challenge as he looks to build on his successful stint with the Karadeniz Fırtınası.

This achievement underscores the trust placed in him by the coaching staff and his pivotal role within the team.

Ndah’s strong display in the MTN 8 semifinal comes at a significant time, as he has also been recalled to the Nigerian national team. • Chelsea or Al Ahli: Brown Ideye shares his personal experience with Osimhen as he faces transfer decision

As speculation continues to swirl around Victor Osimhen’s future at Napoli, former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has stepped forward with advice for the star forward. With reports suggesting Osimhen might leave Napoli for Chelsea or consider a lucrative offer from the Saudi Pro League, Ideye has drawn from his own experiences to offer guidance.

Brown Ideye, who lifted the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the Super Eagles, recently took to social media to share a personal story about his unexpected transfer to China. The move, which saw him join Tianjin TEDA from Olympiacos, wasn’t part of his original career plan but was driven by financial incentives that were too good to pass up.

“I had no plans to go to China,” Ideye shared on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Olympiacos received an offer from TEDA which they couldn’t refuse. My agent negotiated with TEDA about my salary and bonuses. When I saw the long numbers and told my wife, she packed my luggage for me to leave the next day, LOL.”

Through this anecdote, Ideye highlighted how financial offers can play a significant role in a player’s career decisions. He hopes this insight will resonate with Osimhen, who is currently weighing his options between a high-profile move to Chelsea or a lucrative deal from Saudi Arabia.

Osimhen’s situation has garnered significant attention, especially as the transfer deadline approaches. The Napoli striker has not featured for his club this season, amid ongoing negotiations and interest from various clubs. Ideye’s advice is particularly timely, as Osimhen’s next move could shape the trajectory of his career.

In addition to offering advice, Ideye has previously expressed disappointment with Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, for potentially ruling out a move to Chelsea. Ideye criticized the lack of respect he believes Osimhen receives from European clubs, underscoring the challenges the striker faces as he navigates his next steps.

As the transfer window draws to a close, all eyes will be on Osimhen as he decides whether to stay in Europe or explore opportunities elsewhere.
