  • Aliko Dangote reveals why he shelved plans to buy Arsenal

Africa’s richest man, Alh. Aliko Dangote, has officially put an end to his long-held ambition of purchasing Premier League club Arsenal, citing shifting financial priorities and the club’s increased valuation. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, the CEO of the Dangote Group expressed regret for not acquiring the club when its valuation was around $2 billion.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Dangote explained, “I think that time has passed.” The Nigerian billionaire, whose net worth is estimated at over $13 billion, noted that Arsenal’s current valuation of $2.6 billion and the success of his refinery project in Nigeria led him to prioritize his business over football aspirations.

In 2020, Dangote had expressed a desire to buy Arsenal once his multi-billion-dollar refinery project was completed. However, with the club’s rising value and improved performance, Dangote has decided to remain a passionate supporter from the sidelines rather than pursue ownership. He remarked, “Arsenal is doing extremely well right now… I don’t have that kind of excess liquidity to go and buy a club for $4 billion.”

Despite his deep passion for the club, Dangote emphasized that completing his Dangote Refinery project, which has already begun operations, was more critical than purchasing Arsenal. “I would have bought the club for $2 billion, but I wouldn’t have been able to finish my project,” he admitted.

Arsenal, owned by American billionaire Stan Kroenke, has seen significant financial growth after finishing second in the Premier League in back-to-back seasons, increasing their annual revenue to $560 million.

While Dangote’s dreams of owning Arsenal have been shelved, his loyalty remains intact. “I will remain a major supporter of Arsenal… but it doesn’t make sense today to buy Arsenal,” he concluded.

  • Galatasaray deputy chairman rules out January transfer for Victor Osimhen

Galatasaray’s Sportif AŞ deputy chairman, İbrahim Hatipoğlu, has dismissed speculation regarding Victor Osimhen’s potential departure in January, revealing the club’s intentions to secure the Nigerian striker on a permanent deal beyond his current loan spell.

Osimhen joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan in early September after a failed transfer to Chelsea on deadline day. Rumours have circulated that top European clubs might trigger clauses in Osimhen’s contract to sign him permanently during the January transfer window. However, Hatipoğlu strongly refuted these claims.

Speaking to NTVSpor, Hatipoğlu stated, “Osimhen’s leaving in January is out of the question. In fact, we are making plans to have Osimhen play next season as well. He is very happy at Galatasaray, and we intend to keep him beyond the current season.”

While Osimhen has a €75 million release clause in his contract with Napoli, Hatipoğlu emphasized that the player is content in Istanbul and fully committed to Galatasaray, as shown by his performances on the pitch. The club is now working on keeping the Super Eagles forward for the long term, as he continues to play a pivotal role in their title defense

  • Joseph Yobo shares Super Eagles coaching job experience

Super Eagles legend Joseph Yobo has opened up about the challenges he faced during his time as a coach with the Nigerian national team. Yobo, who had a highly successful playing career, notably being part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under Stephen Keshi, admitted that his stint as an assistant coach did not go as he had hoped.

After retiring from international football in 2014, following Nigeria’s loss to France in the FIFA World Cup round of 16, Yobo transitioned into coaching. In February 2020, he was appointed as one of the Super Eagles’ assistant coaches.

Reflecting on his coaching experience, Yobo expressed disappointment with the way Nigerian coaches are treated, stating, “The only reason I hesitated to join the coaching crew was because of how coaches are treated. It’s not encouraging.” He revealed that after finishing his playing career, he was reluctant to pursue coaching due to the lack of success and recognition often associated with Nigerian coaches.

Despite initial hesitations, Yobo embraced the coaching role and found enjoyment in the job, seeing it as an opportunity to grow. “I realized I had it in me. I was even told I could be the next Stephen Keshi,” Yobo shared. However, his tenure was cut short after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, leading to the dismissal of the entire coaching staff.

Yobo expressed his disappointment with the abrupt decision, stating, “I was highly disappointed when everyone was told to go, even though they had assured me ‘no shaking.’” Despite this setback, the former Super Eagles captain hasn’t ruled out a return to coaching in the future, though it’s not his current focus.

  • See who Victor Ikpeba urged NFF to steal for Super Eagles before France

Former Super Eagles and AS Monaco forward, Victor Ikpeba, has called on Nigeria’s national team and the NFF to swiftly secure the international allegiance of 18-year-old striker George Ilenikhena.

Born in Lagos, Ilenikhena made history in the UEFA Champions League by becoming Monaco’s youngest player to score in Champions League match against Barcelona.

Ilenikhena’s goal in Monaco’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona eclipsed Kylian Mbappe’s record, making him a promising talent.

Despite Nigeria’s wealth of attacking options, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Boniface, Ikpeba believes Ilenikhena has the potential to be a future Super Eagles star.

“I have been following the remarkable progress of the boy; he’s quick and will certainly be one for the future for the Super Eagles,” Ikpeba stated.

“I know that he has already been capped by the French age-grade team, but we can still get him to play for the Super Eagles.”

Ilenikhena’s rise began early, setting a Ligue 2 record as the youngest scorer at 16 years and 150 days when he netted for Bordeaux in January 2023. His strike against Barcelona added another milestone to his growing reputation.

With his first goal for Monaco in only his fifth appearance, Ikpeba insists Nigeria must act swiftly to secure his services.

Ilenikhena scored in Monaco’s 2:1 defeat over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League

“This is the time to get him in, and thereafter he can fight for his place in the team.”

Ilenikhena’s impressive performance has sparked interest, with Premier League giants sending scouts to monitor Nigerian players.

Nigeria’s national team must capitalize on this opportunity to secure Ilenikhena’s international allegiance.

Will Nigeria succeed in securing Ilenikhena’s services, or will France win the battle for his allegiance? Only time will tell.
