  • FC Barcelona struggles on with La Liga draw vs Valencia

In a continuation of Barcelona’s recent struggles, the team extended their winless streak to three games as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Valencia in La Liga on Saturday, December 16, 2023.

Despite the efforts of manager Xavi Hernandez to reverse their fortunes, Barcelona failed to secure a victory, following back-to-back defeats against Girona in the league and Royal Antwerp in the Champions League.

Barcelona appeared to be on the path to a positive result when Joao Felix converted Raphinha’s cross from close range, giving them the lead.

However, Valencia responded with determination, as Hugo Guillamon unleashed a beautiful strike into the top corner to level the score, earning a valuable point for his team.

Despite the setback, Barcelona had late opportunities to clinch the win, but Valencia’s goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, displayed exceptional form to deny substitute Ferran Torres and thwart a close-range effort from Raphinha. Yarek Gasiorowski, Valencia’s defender, further contributed to Mamardashvili’s efforts by superbly blocking Raphinha’s follow-up attempt on the goal line.

While the draw lifted Barcelona to the third position in the league standings, they find themselves trailing leaders Girona by six points, with the latter holding a game in hand.

Valencia’s point from the draw places them in the 10th position in the La Liga table, accumulating a total of 20 points from 17 games.

As Barcelona continues to navigate through a challenging period, Xavi and his team will be seeking a turnaround in form to climb the league ladder and regain their winning momentum in the upcoming fixtures.
