    In an exclusive interview with CAFOnline, Nigerian football legend Austin Okocha has thrown his support behind Napoli forward Victor Osimhen ahead of the highly anticipated second Group A match in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023, scheduled for January 18 between the hosts and the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

  • Edo FA visits Super Eagles in Abidjan, honours Musa, Osimhen in special ceremony

    In a special ceremony held at the Pullman Abidjan Hotel in Côte d’Ivoire on Tuesday, January 16, 2023, the Edo State Football Association (Edo FA) extended its recognition and appreciation to Super Eagles players Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen.

    Representatives from Edo FA presented souvenirs to both players during the brief but meaningful event, acknowledging their significant contributions to Nigerian football and their proud Edo State heritage.

    Edo FA Chairman, Fred Newton Erhunmwunsein, commended Musa and Osimhen as “good ambassadors of Nigeria and the good people of Edo state.” He conveyed the warm regards of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and assured the players of unwavering support and prayers from the Edo people as they continue to excel on the football stage.

    “On behalf of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Sports Commission chairman, Yusuf Alli, members of the Edo State FA, and the good people of Edo State, we are proud to have you in our family and happy to see your exploits for your club and country,” stated Erhunmwunsein.

    In response, Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa shared his joy at reconnecting with his late mother’s home state. 

    Expressing his pride, Musa said, “Yes, I feel very happy. I am always proud of where my mum comes from. I have started discussing with the FA, and we will continue the discussions to see what I can do.” 

    Musa stressed the significance of acknowledging his Edo roots, noting, “I think this is a good opportunity because many people don’t know I am also from Edo State. When I do a thing like this, they will know.” 

    He assured the Edo FA of his steadfast support, stating, “Of course, the Edo FA can count on me for support, anytime, anywhere, and any day.”

    The Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire will play the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their next group match on Thursday.

    Cote D’id’Ivoire is currently sitting top of the Group A table after defeating Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in their opening match.

    Ahead of the match, Head Coach of the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, Jean Louis Gasset revealed at a news conference that his team is confident of clipping the wings of the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their epic clash on Thursday in Abidjan.

    He said the technical team has done its homework and has a perfect plan on how to neutralize the strength of the Super Eagles, which lies in their potent attack force.

    “Regarding our second match, we know the strengths of Nigeria, they have an impressive offensive armada.

    Former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has come to the defense of Lionel Messi, explaining why the Argentine deserved to be named the 2023 FIFA Best Men’s Player ahead of Erling Haaland.

    Messi secured his eighth FIFA Best Award, beating out competition from Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

    Mikel acknowledged Haaland’s remarkable achievements, including a treble with Manchester City and 30 goals across all competitions during the review period. However, he emphasized Messi’s broader impact.

    While recognizing Haaland’s contributions, Mikel pointed out that Manchester City remains successful even without the Norwegian striker on the field, highlighting the team’s ability to create chances and win games.

    “I understand that he [Haaland] plays for Manchester City. Manchester City is the team that creates chances. They win games.

  • Pep Guardiola wins FIFA Best Coach

    Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was named best FIFA men’s coach at the  Best Fifa Football Awards in London.

    The Spaniard was honored with the award after leading Manchester City to a historic Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup treble in 2022/23. Guardiola’s all-conquering team further rounded up 2023 in style by lifting the UEFA Super Cup before rounding off the calendar year in perfect style by triumphing at the FIFA Club World Cup.

    His Manchester City team swept all before them at home and abroad, consistently showcasing elite technical quality, outstanding tactical awareness, and a relentless winning mentality.

    The 52-year-old Spaniard topped the vote with 28 scoring points ahead of fellow finalists Simone Inzaghi (11points)  and Luciano Spalletti (18 points).

    Inzaghi was in charge of the Inter Milan team that lost 1-0 to City in the Champions League final after winning the Coppa Italia while Spalletti led Napoli to their first Serie A title in more than 30 years.

    Spalletti then left Napoli at the end of last season after winning their first Serie A title and was appointed as the new boss of the Italy men’s national team.

    Guardiola became the first coach to win a treble of the league championship, the main domestic cup, and the UEFA Champions League on two occasions. He also won three major trophies with Barcelona during 2008/09, cementing his status as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game in 2023.

    Guardiola is the first Spaniard to win The Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award, which was launched in 2016. He had previously placed second in 2019 before coming third in 2021 and 2022.
    Manchester City’s Ederson collected the goalkeeper award ahead of Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Al Hilal’s Yassine Bounou.
