  • Akor Adams bags brace in Montpellier win

Akor Adams bagged a brace as Montpellier defeated fourth division club Entente Feignies Aulnoye 4-0 to reach the French Cup round of 16 on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.

Nigerian forward Akor Adams scored his first of the game in the 73rd minute to put Montpellier 2-0 up and before adding a second in the 92nd minute to make it 4-0.

Aside getting two goals, Adams provided the assist for Montpellier’s third goal scored in the 90th minute.

Heading into Wednesday’s game, Adams was facing a two months goal drought, he last scored on 29th October 2023,  a brace in the 3-0 win against Toulouse in the league.

The 23-year-old former Flying Eagles striker failed to score in 10 consecutive games before ending the drought against the French fourth division side.

Akor Adams has scored seven goals in eighteen appearances in the French Ligue 1 this season and was heavily tipped to make the Nigeria national team squad for the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cote d’Ivoire but head coach Jose Peseiro stuck with more established forwards for the championship.

Meanwhile, Montpellier will host Terem Moffi’s OGC Nice in the round of 16 of the French Cup scheduled to take place on 7th February, 2024.

In history, Montpellier have only won the French Cup twice in their history – in 1929 and 1990, a drought Adams and his teammates will hope to erase this season.

  • AFCON 2023: CAF suspends Morocco’s coach Walid Regragui

Morocco coach, Walid Regragui has been suspended for four matches, two of these matches were suspended for one (1) year and given a fine of$5,000.

Following the ban, Regragui who watched from the stands as Morocco beat Zambia 1-0 in their final group game late Wednesday will miss Morocco’s last-16 game against South Africa on Tuesday (20:00 GMT) unless an appeal by the Morocco Football  Federation (RMFF) is successful.

The sanctions relate to post-match incidents after Morocco’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo on Sunday. The match between Morocco and DR Congo at the Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro was a tense affair, as scuffles broke out between both sets of players following the full-time whistle.

Regragui and Congo captain Chancel Mbemba had a heated exchange after their team’s match ended 1-1 in San Pedro on Sunday. It led to a melee between players and officials from both teams that continued as they went down the players’ tunnel.

TV replays showed Regragui seeking Mbemba after the game when the player was on his knees giving thanks in a personal moment. Mbemba took Regragui’s hand and clapped him on the back. But Regragui kept hold of Mbemba’s hand and carried on talking. He appeared to be saying, “Look at me.” The player angrily pulled his hand away and gestured for the video referee before players from both sides jumped in.

Mbemba’s Instagram account was subjected to a stream of racist abuse, while Regragui said he received death threats in the fallout.

CAF’s statement also said it fined the Moroccan federation an additional $10,000 “for the use of smoke bombs by its supporters during the match,” with half the amount suspended.

  • Alex Iwobi backs Jose Peseiro’s tactics at 2023 AFCON

Alex Iwobi has addressed criticism from some Nigerian fans regarding Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro’s tactical approach in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Coach Peseiro adopted a 3-4-3 formation against Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau following the clash against Equatorial Guinea, a decision that has raised concerns among Nigerian football enthusiasts. Despite creating 41 goal attempts, with 14 on target and three goals during the group stage, fans have expressed apprehensions about the team’s goal-scoring efficiency.

In response, Alex Iwobi defended the tactics, emphasizing their effectiveness in the team’s current progress. He urged fans to be patient with the 2013 AFCON champions, acknowledging that goals might not be flowing as desired at the moment but expressing confidence that the situation would improve as the team advances in the competition.

In a post-match interview following the victory over Guinea-Bissau, Iwobi highlighted the significance of the win in securing qualification for the next stage. He expressed the team’s motivation to win the next game, taking each step step by step.

“The win over Guinea-Bissau means a lot to us as we qualify for the next stage, and our motivation is to win the next game. We want to take the game step by step as we want to win our next match, then we can have confidence that we can do the rest,” he stated.

Iwobi further defended the employed tactics, pointing out that the same formation was used against Ivory Coast. He emphasized that as long as the team secures victories, the specific tactical approach becomes secondary.

“The tactics used against Guinea-Bissau were good; it was the same formation against Ivory Coast, and at the end of the day, the tactics work together, so we will just continue to use it as long as we win. As long as you win, any tactical approach does not matter.”

The Super Eagles are set to face Cameroon in the Round of 16 after securing all points against Guinea-Bissau, while the Indomitable Lions finished as Group C’s runners-up.

  • Ifeanyi Udeze: Victor Osimhen under pressure to score at 2023 AFCON

Former Nigeria international Ifeanyi Udeze has expressed his belief that Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is under pressure to score goals at the AFCON 2023.

Despite being tipped as one of the players to compete for the top scorer award, Osimhen has only managed to score one goal and has missed several scoring opportunities in Nigeria’s group stage run.

Speaking on Brila FM, Udeze noted that the pressure seems to be affecting Osimhen, leading to a drop in his confidence when facing the opponent’s goal post.

Udeze emphasized the importance of Osimhen regaining his confidence and urged him to get back to his goal-scoring form.

“For me, Osimhen is under pressure, that’s why he is trying everything possible to score. The pressure is affecting him, and I think his confidence level has dropped a little bit whenever he faces the opponent’s goal post, so he needs to get his confidence back.”
