  • NPFL announces short break for Rivers United, adjusts schedule for Federation Cup

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced a brief hiatus in the ongoing league season to accommodate Rivers United’s backlog of outstanding fixtures. The decision comes after the release of the Federation Cup Round of 64 fixtures, which revealed scheduling conflicts with the NPFL matches.

According to Davidson Owumi, Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, “Following the release of fixtures for the Federation Cup Round of 64 games, it has become manifest that our fixtures would require some tinkering.” In a press statement, Owumi explained that the NPFL matches would be paused after Matchday 34 to allow Rivers United to complete their outstanding fixtures accumulated from their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Rivers United’s participation in the CAF Confederation Cup has resulted in a backlog of fixtures, and the NPFL has taken this step to ensure that the team can clear their schedule. Owumi emphasized, “It is our expectation that the backlog of fixtures for Rivers United would be cleared as soon as is sportingly feasible.”

  • NFF set to unveil new Super Eagles coach in 48 hours

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is on the brink of unveiling the new head coach for the Super Eagles, concluding a prolonged quest to fill the vacancy left by Jose Peseiro.

After deliberating over whether to adhere to tradition by hiring a foreign coach or opt for a homegrown talent, the NFF’s technical committee has leaned towards a European coach. Among the shortlisted candidates are former Manchester City assistant manager Domenec Torrent and current Fortuna Sittard boss Danny Buijs.

However, recent developments, including the Sports Ministry’s stance on foreign coach salary payments, may sway the decision towards a former international player to lead the Super Eagles.

This shift in approach has propelled former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amunike and ex-Ajax Amsterdam ace George Finidi to the forefront of the race. Initial indications suggest that Amunike holds the edge, with an official announcement expected within 48 hours.

Preparations are already underway, with the NFF reportedly having a contract prepared for the incoming head coach, according to Owngoal Nigeria. The contract is slated to span two years, with a salary package below $50,000.

The appointed coach will bear the responsibility of steering the three-time African champions towards qualification for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Notably, there will be a stipulation in the contract requiring the coach to guide the Super Eagles to at least the semifinals of the upcoming AFCON.

The impending appointment marks a significant moment in Nigerian football, as the new head coach inherits the task of revitalizing the national team’s fortunes on the continental and global stage. The legacy of former internationals venturing into coaching, exemplified by Sunday Oliseh, serves as both inspiration and cautionary tale. Oliseh’s tenure as Super Eagles coach was brief, lasting less than a year, and marred by clashes with the NFF leadership.

As the NFF prepares to unveil the new head coach, anticipation mounts among football enthusiasts, eager to see who will be entrusted with guiding the Super Eagles into a new era. The chosen candidate will not only shoulder the weight of expectations but will also wield significant influence in shaping the future trajectory of Nigerian football. With qualification campaigns on the horizon and the opportunity to leave an indelible mark on the sport, the stage is set for a new chapter in the Super Eagles’ journey.

  • Gateway United bags NNL fine and ban from Benin

Gateway United Football Club of Abeokuta has been banished to Benin by the Nigeria National League (NNL) for violating the league’s security rules. The decision comes after fans of the Abeokuta side unleashed violence on the center referee following their goalless draw against Ikorodu United on Saturday.

The NNL has not taken this incident lightly, imposing a banishment on Gateway United and fine of N1 million for their actions. Additionally, the club is required to cover the medical expenses of the referee, totaling N100,000. Dr. Ayo Abdulrahaman, Chief Operating Officer of NNL, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the club must identify and prosecute the fans responsible for the attack or face further sanctions.

As a result of this disciplinary action, Gateway United will now have to play their remaining home matches at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. This means that both Crown FC and Osun United will face the Abeokuta side in unfamiliar territory as the season progresses.

  • Coach Paul Offor leaves Sporting Lagos amid ambition clash

The reigning Naija Super 8 champions Sporting Lagos have made the tough decision to part ways with head coach Paul Offor and his coaching staff after a fall-out over the club’s ambitions.

Offor, who helped guide Sporting Lagos to their first-ever season in the Nigeria Premier League and secured the club’s first trophy, has been demoted and ultimately let go due to disagreements with the board over player recruitment, tactics, and squad selection.

Sporting Lagos currently sits in 11th place on the NPFL table, with a record of 10 wins, 12 defeats, and 8 draws in 30 games. The team has struggled to secure an away win and recently suffered a loss in the Lagos FA Cup to Inter Lagos, one of their new rivals.

The club’s technical director, Paul Aigbogun, took over tactical duties during Offor’s demotion, but ultimately the rift between the coach and the board led to his departure. Offor’s refusal to sign South Sudanese midfielder Joseph Loro, among other player preference issues, contributed to his removal.

The club released several players during the January transfer window, including Odafi Emmanuel, Saturday Okon, and Godwin Udoh, as they sought to revamp the squad under Offor’s leadership. However, Offor’s insistence on his own player choices over the club’s philosophy led to his dismissal.

Despite their initial hopes to retain Offor, Sporting Lagos’ ambition for the club’s future success ultimately led to the decision to bring in former Kwara United manager Abdullahi Biffo to take over coaching duties.

In response to the decision, Offor stated, “I am grateful for the opportunity to lead Sporting Lagos and I am proud of all we achieved together. I wish the club and the players all the best in the future.”

Sporting Lagos fans have expressed mixed reactions to the news, with some supporting the club’s decision to prioritize success and others lamenting the loss of a coach who brought them historic victories.

Moving forward, Sporting Lagos will look to Biffo to guide the team to further success and fulfill the club’s ambitions of competing at the highest level in Nigerian football.

  • Heartland gets NPFL approval to return to Owerri

Heartland Football Club have been granted provisional approval to play their remaining home games of the season at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri. This decision comes after the club underwent a second inspection of their pitch, where notable improvements were observed.

The approval, however, comes with a caveat as it does not extend to the next season. The club will have to undergo another comprehensive review of their facilities in line with the Facilities Criteria of the Club Licensing requirement. This is a common practice to ensure that clubs maintain a certain standard of infrastructure and facilities for players and fans alike.

“We are pleased to announce that Heartland Football Club has been given the green light to return to Owerri for their remaining home games of the season,” said a spokesperson from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). “The improvements made to their pitch have met our standards, and we look forward to seeing them back in action at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.”

The decision to allow Heartland to return to Owerri signals a positive step forward for the club and its fans who have been eagerly awaiting this news.

READ MORE: Coach Paul Offor leaves Sporting Lagos amid ambition clash

This approval comes after the NPFL had earlier revoked the provisional approval granted to the club at the start of the second stanza of the season. This was due to observed deterioration of the pitch, which raised concerns about player safety and the overall quality of the playing surface.

“We have worked tirelessly to address the issues with our pitch and ensure that it meets the required standards set by the NPFL,” said a representative from Heartland Football Club. “We are grateful for the opportunity to host our games at the Dan Anyiam Stadium once again, and we will continue to make improvements to ensure that it remains in top condition.”

The news of Heartland’s return to Owerri has been met with enthusiasm by both the club’s players and fans. The opportunity to play in front of a home crowd is a significant boost for the team as they look to finish the season on a high note and secure their position in the league standings.
