  • Fact Check: Fake news about a DNA test-related beheading recirculates on social media

A recent Facebook post warns about false positives in DNA testing but uses a fake headline to prove its point.

“Man cuts off wife’s head after DNA test proved none of 6 kids are his own,” the headline says below a man’s photo and a woman’s photo.

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

A reverse-image search led to real 2013 news headlines about a man who stabbed his wife in London because he suspected she was having an affair with the neighbor.

The articles showed photos that appear to be the same man and woman from the Facebook post, but they don’t mention DNA or paternity.

Other inauthentic news stories that use their pictures give the victim a different name and dateline. Supposedly, the alleged beheading happened in “Mountain View.”

We rate claims that a man beheaded his wife following a DNA test False.

  • Draymond Green’s status, coaching changes and more

SAN FRANCISCO — Draymond Green will be out for the Warriors’ first three pre-season games, at least. But he’s still making his voice heard at practices.

Green has been throwing out plenty of trash talk and motivations during Golden State’s first week of training camp from the sideline as he nurses a sprained left ankle.

“Draymond, his energy dominates a room,” head coach Steve Kerr said on Friday. “First couple of days of scrimmages he’s on the sideline talking trash to both teams and pumping guys up and right in the middle of it all. He’s really excited for the season and he’s progressing well.”

Green will be re-evaluated on Monday with the potential to play the final two pre-season games. The hope is he’ll be ready to play in some capacity for the Warriors’ opener on Oct. 24 against the Phoenix Suns.

Free agent signing Cory Joseph and training camp invite Rodney McGruder will also be sidelined for Saturday’s game against the Lakers. Joseph, 32, is recovering from a lower back lumbar strain and will also be re-evaluated on Monday.

“I called Gregg Popovich about him this summer when we were thinking about signing him and Pop said he was one of the best human beings I’ve ever coached. And that’s high praise coming from Pop. That’s what you want, you want to fill your roster with good leaders, teammates. And he’s a really good player. We’re lucky to have him.”

McGruder, 32, was inactive on Saturday in concussion protocol.

    Coaching changes

Former assistant coach Jama Mahlalela left the Warriors in the offseason for his hometown Toronto Raptors. With his departure, the Warriors lost their director of player development who also crafted substitution patterns and drew up special teams plays.

  • Biden Warns Israel’s Rivals To Stay Clear As U.S. Backs Netanyahu To Strike Hamas In Gaza

    Joe-Biden-and-Benjamin-Netanyahu

In the wake of fresh attacks on Israel by Iran-backed militant group, Hamas, the United States President, Joe Biden, has expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself.

Hamas’ thousands of rockets fired from Palestinian exclave, Gaza, into Israeli cities and Israel’s retaliation were reported to have resulted in hundreds of lives being lost, including civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had declared that his country was now at war with Hamas and vowed to inflict an “unprecedented price” on the Islamic group.

Hamas commander, Muhammad Al-Deif, said the attack on Israel was a response to attacks on women and the desecration of the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Reacting on Saturday, Biden took a strong stance in the face of the escalating violence, tweeting: “Israel has a right to defend itself – full stop.” He said “The world is seeing appalling images. Thousands of rockets raining down on Israeli cities. Hamas terrorists killing not only Israeli soldiers, but civilians on the streets and in their homes. It’s unconscionable.”

The U.S. President’s tweet echoed his earlier statement published on the White House website, in which he condemned the “horrific and ongoing attacks in Israel” and expressed solidarity with its government and people.

While noting that “terrorism is never justified”, Biden vowed that the U.S. will “stand ready to offer all appropriate means of support” to the country if the need arises.

He also warned countries opposed to Israel against taking advantage of the situation.

Biden’s words “This morning, I spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu about the horrific and ongoing attacks in Israel. The United States unequivocally condemns this appalling assault against Israel by Hamas terrorists from Gaza, and I made clear to Prime Minister Netanyahu that we stand ready to offer all appropriate means of support to the Government and people of Israel. Terrorism is never justified. Israel has a right to defend itself and its people. The United States warns against any other party hostile to Israel seeking advantage in this situation. My Administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering.

“Jill and I are keeping in our prayers all of the families who have been hurt by this violence. We are heartbroken by the lives that have been tragically cut short and hope for a swift recovery for all those who have been wounded.

“My team and I are tracking this situation closely, and I will remain in close touch with Prime Minister Netanyahu.”

  • Fact Check: Former President Donald Trump doesn’t control the military, but not everyone believes it

Although Donald Trump is a former president and aspiring to a second term, he doesn’t control the U.S. military, as a recent Facebook post claims.

“Trump controls US military!” the Oct. 4 post says.

It was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The post’s 33-minute video provides no credible evidence to support this claim. Perhaps because there is none.

Rather, it’s a montage of clips including unrelated Fox News broadcasts, TikTok videos and social media posts.

President Joe Biden is commander in chief of the U.S. armed forces, giving him authority to make decisions affecting each of the military branches. But, as the bipartisan Stennis Center for Public Service points out, the Constitution also gives Congress power to oversee the military.

Someone who doesn’t wield such control? Trump.

  • How Tinubu Should Spend Over N1 Trillion Saved From Subsidy Removal On Nigerians – Alex Otti

    Alex-Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has offered a roadmap for utilizing subsidy savings to address various economic and social challenges facing Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of strategic investments in critical sectors and the empowerment of the nation’s youth and entrepreneurs.

The Abia governor proposed ways the Federal Government can utilize savings from the removal of petrol subsidy, among others, to assist the vulnerable Nigerian population that is most impacted by the subsidy removal.

He made the proposal in a public lecture he delivered titled “Fuel Subsidy Removal: Dealing with the Challenges, Harnessing the Opportunities” during the 63rd Founders’ Day celebration at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Otti recommended that at least 25% of the approximately N1 trillion saved from last year’s expenditure due to subsidy removal should be allocated to support 20 million impoverished Nigerians for 5 months.

Governor Otti also suggested channelling another 25% of the subsidy savings into public works initiatives, engaging the nation’s unemployed youth in government-funded infrastructure projects, including road construction and mass housing development.

He added, “To support MSMEs, which are critical engines of economic growth, we recommend that LGAs, states and the federal government must channel a part of their receipt from subsidy savings to that segment. Again I would recommend 25%, to support MSME businesses through training and capacity building, exposure to local and domestic markets, infrastructure support and lastly, provision of structured financing to existing and intending entrepreneurs.

“I am of the view that the best way to harness the energy and creativity of our young people is to expand the enterprise space, take off the many restrictions that have been known to frustrate businesses such as multiple taxation and harassments by thugs. Additionally, we must give them the institutional support they need to compete on the same level as their peers from Southeast Asia. This is the best time to support our farmers, founders of innovative startups, fashion designers, entertainers, small-scale manufacturers and all the other individuals who are doing great things across Nigeria.

“Lastly and for me, most importantly, there is no better time to invest in our power generation and distribution value chain than now. One more time, I would recommend we do this with the remaining 25% of the over N4 trillion we paid for petrol subsidy in 2022.”

This way, the governor said the government would be able to combat youth unemployment, reduce poverty rates, and enhance the nation’s public infrastructure.

He stressed the urgency of increasing power generation capacity from various sources and learning from successful strategies employed by other developing economies with similar demographics and economic systems.

Additionally, Governor Otti called for incentives to encourage private sector players, including major oil companies like NNPCL and NLNG, to invest in the electricity sector.

The investments, he said, would help alleviate the impact of petrol subsidy removal by improving electricity supply for businesses and households.

Governor Otti concluded his address by highlighting the “golden opportunity” for local refining of petroleum products now that subsidies have been removed, allowing market forces to operate more freely.

He encouraged investors to explore this opportunity by building modular and standard refineries, considering the market dynamics and business viability.

  • Fact Check: Don’t freak out: This claim about Oprah Winfrey and missing children in Maui, Hawaii, is unfounded

Media magnate Oprah Winfrey has been a regular target of misinformation since wildfires ravaged Maui, Hawaii, in August.

Now a Facebook post suggests she’s connected to the disappearance of more than a dozen missing children on the island.

“Oprah FREAKS OUT after 15 kids are finally found on Maui,” reads text over a video shared  Oct. 2 on Facebook. The words “save the children” appear below it.

“Why are people speculating about Oprah for this incident?” someone in the video says. “Is she involved in such a horrific alleged act? You are about to find out.”

The narrator later says, “There are still some children unaccounted for, so in light of Oprah’s alleged past involvement in similar incidents, some individuals are now raising awareness about her possible connection to this supposed latest tragedy.”

The video then cuts to a man saying, “Where are the kids, Oprah? It was only two and a half weeks ago, and now we’re not allowed to talk about it, we’re not free in this country.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

We found no credible news reports or other authoritative sources to corroborate this post’s claim. We did find a YouTube video that includes some of the clips in the Instagram post’s video, and it refers to an unfounded and debunked story about Navy SEALs finding “15 missing Maui children imprisoned in padlocked cages lined with piddle pads.”

Around the time that story was published Sept. 17, only one of 31 people unaccounted for was a known minor, according to the Maui Police Department and FBI.

We rate claims that Oprah “freaked out” over this fake news story, much less that she’s responsible for missing minors in Maui, False.

  • Mammoth Lake’s rustic alpine hideaways are perfect for fall – Paradise Post

Summer’s hot and crowded days have passed, and many of us are seeking relaxing fall escapes into nature. Here’s a tip: head east over California’s mighty Sierra Nevada to Mono County and the Mammoth Lakes region for a big dose of high elevation mountain scenery—think rushing streams, dense forest, serene lakes and fall color.

Autumn is an ideal time to visit the eastern Sierra. Crowds are light, temperatures are cooler and, even better, the region’s aspen forests provide a dazzling, albeit brief, display of fall color. (Find the latest details on those hues and a map of where colors are nearing peak display at

One of the best ways to immerse oneself in Mammoth’s abundant natural splendor is to overnight in a rustic cabin and live like a pioneer — 21st century-style.

There are many cabin choices in Mammoth, from historic lakeside cabins in the dense woods to more modern tiny homes set in mountain meadows. I recently spent two nights at the Alpenhof Lodge, located near Mammoth’s Village complex, and another two nights at the Double Eagle Resort & Spa at the base of 10,908-foot Carson Peak on the June Lake loop.

After a week of cabin life, I can attest that there’s no better place to plunk yourself down and bathe in nature than a cozy wooden house in the woods. Here are some of the best rustic cabin options in the Mammoth region to try out this fall:

    Cabins at Mammoth Lakes

After an unhurried, day-long drive from the Bay Area over the Sierra’s dramatically steep and scenic Sonora Pass, we arrived at Mammoth Lake’s Alpine-style Alpenhof Lodge, whose entrance is embellished by an oversized Willkommen in German-style lettering.

We stayed in one of the lodge’s two-bedroom cabins, equipped with a small kitchen and fireplace and set in a woodsy setting alongside the main lodge. While not in the deep woods, the Alpenhof is in an ideal location right across from the Mammoth Village, where resort-style restaurants, bars and shops beckon, and a free open-air trolley, equipped with a bike trailer, can transport you to the world-famous Mammoth Mountain bike park and to the spectacular Mammoth Lakes Basin for picnics, fishing, hikes, mountain bike and horseback rides, and refreshing lake swims.

Just across the street from the lodge is the paved Lakes Basin multi-use path that winds five miles up into the mountains. It’s perfect for walks, runs and road and mountain bike rides. (Class 1 e-mountain bikes are also allowed on the path and are a popular choice with cyclists.)

Enjoy the Alpenhof’s lively Clocktower cellar bar, whose multiple craft brew taps and whiskey selection are popular with the locals, and Petra’s, an excellent bistro and wine bar. Details: alpenhof-lodge.com

Mammoth Mountain Chalets, right next to the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge, has numerous hiking and biking trails right from your doorstep — and a nearby shuttle takes explorers to Reds Meadow and Yosemite National Park. Historic Tamarack Lodge and Resort is the grande dame of Mammoth Lakes Basin and oozes charm with its cabins and a rustic main lodge set on the shore of pristine Twin Lakes. Its popular, upscale Lakefront Restaurant has attracted visitors for decades. Details: mammothmountain.com

Several rustic, historic lodges also can be found in the Mammoth region. Secluded Crystal Crag Lodge, set at 9,000 feet on the shore of Lake Mary has drawn visitors here for almost a hundred years. That’s in large part thanks to the lodge’s incredible setting: a trout-filled lake, the pure mountain air and the countless tree-lined hiking and biking trails on the edge of the High Sierra backcountry. These rustic cabins are very popular and often booked a year in advance. Details: crystalcrag.com

The Wildyrie Lodge on Lake Mamie offers lakeside cottages with full kitchens, bathrooms and spacious sun decks with barbecues. Cabins at June Lake

The Double Eagle Resort & Spa is just 12 miles from the eastern entrance to Yosemite Park  and 22 miles northeast from Mammoth Lakes. The resort’s 16 cabins offer charming, rustic luxury in an aspen and pine forest.

Many are set by a trout-filled pond and a rushing creek at the base of Carson Peak, a steep-sided Sierra edifice of almost surreal beauty. Horsetail Falls, perched midway on the peak, was a torrent of snowmelt, flowing like a burst water main out of a granite wall, when I was there. Wagon wheels and old mining equipment decorate the grounds, which also houses a spa, indoor pool and the excellent Eagle’s Landing restaurant. Details: doubleeagle.com

Silver Lake Resort, just a few miles from the town of June Lake on the June Lake Loop, was established in 1916 and is one of the premier destinations for trout fishing in the Sierra. Some 17 cabins offer the perfect retreat for anglers, hikers and outdoor lovers. Details: silverlakeresort.net/cabins

    The dining scene

Alpenhof Lodge, Tamarack Lodge, Double Eagle Resort and Sierra Meadows Ranch have restaurants on property. You might also want to treat yourself to some of the many excellent restaurants and brewpubs in Mammoth Lakes. Here are some suggestions:

Set at the busy intersection of Minaret and Lake Mary Road, the spacious Mammoth Brewing Company brewery and pub offers a wide menu including ale-battered fish and chips, barbecue chicken flatbread pizzas, crispy chicken and jalapeno griddle cakes, hearty pub salads and fried chicken sandwiches with sriracha cabbage slaw. • Davido Reacts To Pinnick’s Claim, Says Nobody Can Stop Him From Performing In Nigeria

    Davido

Nigerian Afrobeat singer, David Adeleke popularly known with his stage name as Davido has reacted to the claim made by former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick that he allegedly failed to show up at the 19th edition of ‘Warri Again. ‘

The show which celebrates entertainers from the Niger Delta region took place on October 6th.

During the event, Pinnick claimed that Davido was paid $94,600 for his performance in Delta.

He mentioned that the event organizers had also arranged a private jet for Davido at a cost of $18,000, but the singer did not show up. As a result, they had to replace him with another artist, Shallipopi.

“If he says he’s a big boy, we will tell him we are bigger than him.

“I’m not joking. So, while he was playing his games back and forth, we decided to hunt to find another artiste, Shallipopi.

“You see, when people say they are big, I’m amazed. Is Burna Boy not the biggest artiste in Nigeria today? Burna Boy is half Itsekiri. Burna Boy’s paternal grandmother is Itsekiri. So, he’s bigger than him (Davido).

“Is there anyone bigger than RMD in the acting industry? Or someone bigger than Ali Baba in the comedy industry?

“We have stars aplenty in Warri. Nobody is bigger than Warri,” he said.

But in response, the music star took to X on Saturday, to assure his Warri fans that he would be visiting the city soon.

He wrote, “Throwing stones but you dey live for glass house. Nobody can stop me from performing anywhere in Nigeria… Warri I will see you soon,” he wrote.

In a different post, he posted a picture of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, logo with the caption; “Make I no talk.”

  • Fact Check: Former President Donald Trump isn’t the commander in chief

“Big news!” a recent Instagram post said. “Trump is commander & chief.”

The supposed evidence that former President Donald Trump is still running the nation is offered in a video in the Oct. 3 post.

“This was Dan Scavino posting a clip of President Trump departing Costa Mesa,” a narrator in the video said. “You can see President Trump posing there with the police … he’s got those guards all around him and he’s got the Secret Service all around him. Guys, we’ve seen the vehicles all around him. Many people are posting, look, there’s no way that he’s got all those vehicles, medical, comms, truck, unless he’s running the nation, unless he’s the commander in chief.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The post refers to a video shared Sept. 30 on Instagram by Dan Scavino Jr., a Trump adviser.

“45 department beautiful Costa Mesa, California!” Scavino wrote. “#TRUMP2024 #MAGA #USA.”

Scavino was in Costa Mesa for a ticketed “special evening event” with the former president.

Scavino’s video shows Trump posing for a photo with several armed police officers, leaving a building and waving at supporters. Flashing lights are visible from emergency service vehicles.

The video then cuts to what appears to be a recording shot from inside Scavino’s moving car. It shows more supporters bearing flags and waving, while some police and medical vehicles line the road.

Trump is not the commander in chief. President Joe Biden now holds that role.

It’s not unusual for a former president to come under protection after leaving office, or for local agencies to help. In June, for example, the Columbus Police Department in Georgia provided a motorcade for Trump.

In 1965, Congress authorized the Secret Service to protect former presidents and their spouses during their lifetime. Major presidential and vice presidential candidates can also receive Secret Service protection.

“In order to maintain a safe environment for the president and other protectees, the Secret Service calls upon other federal, state and local agencies to assist on a daily basis,” the Secret Service says.
