  • EndSARS: Abuja Customary Court Awaits Rebuilding 3 Years After Attack (PHOTOS)

The Customary Court building in Dutse, Abuja, remains almost inactive, nearly three years after it fell victim to vandalism and arson during the 2020 EndSARS protests.

The situation continues to affect its functioning, with its windows and glass doors shattered, and some cars and the security post still in ruins.

Recall that in October 2020, irate youths across the nation united under the banner of EndSARS to protest against the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit notorious for its involvement in extrajudicial killings and inhumane treatment of suspects.

EndSARS garnered international support, compelling President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to disband the controversial police unit and establish state panels to investigate victims’ claims.
However, during the protests, opportunistic hoodlums took advantage of the chaos to target government properties and public institutions.

The Dutse Customary Court building became one of their targets, suffering extensive damage.

Despite visits from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and other relevant authorities offering assistance, THE WHISTLER observed that no visible progress has been made to restore the court property during a visit.

This is despite billions in budgetary allocation to the judiciary as well as the FCTA

For instance, the House of Representatives Committee on Judiciary, chaired by Onofiok Akpan, revealed that the 2021 Judiciary budget was N110 billion, but it was deemed insufficient to address the courts’ needs and those of the judges.

As the Customary Court Dutse languishes, litigants can only file applications there. Actual proceedings now take place twice a week at the Customary Court building in Ushafa, Bwari.

  • 49ers’ George Kittle scores on trick play for 2nd TD vs. Cowboys

The 49ers went into their trick bag for the second touchdown of Sunday night’s big showdown with the Cowboys, and the score involved two of their multi-talented stars showing off their ball skills.

After a nice punt return by Ray-Ray McCloud, the 49ers had a short field to go, leading 7-0 early in the second quarter.

On the first play of the drive from the Dallas 38-yard line, Brock Purdy handed the ball off to Christian McCaffrey, who ran right and pitched it to Deebo Samuel. Then Samuel quickly pitched it to a right-rolling Purdy to complete the flea-flicker.

Purdy, with plenty of protection from the offensive linemen who had rolled right along with him, hit tight end George Kittle down the right sideline at the 20-yard line, and Kittle did the rest.

Kittle sold a block before breaking downfield and past the Cowboys’ defense. Jourdan Lewis rushed to catch up to Kittle for an unsuccessful attempt to punch the ball out of the tight end’s arms.

The score was Kittle’s second of the game after he entered the game with no touchdowns through the 49ers’ first four games (all wins). His first touchdown was a 19-yard catch on a deep cross on the 49ers’ first drive of the game.

  • Osimhen Scores As Napoli Lose At Home 1:3 To Fiorentina

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scored and missed a sitter as his Napoli team slumped to a 1:3 defeat on Sunday to Fiorentina at the Maradona.

The champions have been struggling to replicate the form that got them the scudetto last season, leaking goals in defence while Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have been the major culprits scoring few goals upfront.

Fiorentina with all their indifferent form have shown so far this season they are giant slayers and started the match well by opening the scoring after just seven minutes into the match.

The fans at the Maradona had hardly raised their voice with some still trying to take their seat when the ball went into the net.

Osimhen equalised after five minutes in added time before the final whistle brought the first half contest into a close.

Napoli began the second half with all seriousness but it was Fiorentina that went ahead again when 34-year old Bonaventura latched onto the ball to steer it into the net.

It sent shockwaves across the stadium especially as Osimhen had missed a glorious chance moments earlier to put his team ahead.

The Nigerian striker was substituted after 77 minutes as two more of his team mates as coach Rudi Garcia tried to change the trajectory of the game.

But for all their enterprise, it was Fiorentina that got the next goal via Gonzalez three minutes into added time to consign Napoli into their second loss of the season.

  • Brock Purdy leads Niners vs Dak Prescott, Dallas

The 49ers host the Cowboys on Sunday night in their biggest test so far this season.

San Francisco has beaten Dallas in each of the last two postseasons, and they are two of the favorites to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LVIII next February in Las Vegas.

Here is our live blog from the game:

1Q, 11:10 – 49ers 7, Cowboys 0: Brock Purdy found George Kittle on a deep cross for the tight end’s first touchdown of the 2023 season. Purdy was 4-of-4 on the opening drive, and the Dallas defense assisted the 49ers with two penalties for 20 yards, then again jumped offside on the PAT.

Below are our notes from pregame.

SANTA CLARA — Two hours before kickoff, Trey Lance was back on the field at Levi’s Stadium, throwing warmup passes as the Cowboys’ No. 3 quarterback, and doing so from about the same spot where he sustained a fractured ankle in last season’s home opener.

    Then it was reunion time.

Once Lance was done throwing, he visited at the midfield logo with several ex-teammates, including 49ers backups Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen, before Brock Purdy emerged for his warmups and stopped for a minute-long chat with Lance.

Lance is officially the Cowboys’ No. 3, emergency quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush, as has been the case throughout the season for Dallas (3-1).

    GREGORY AMONG INACTIVES

Unlike Christian McCaffrey suiting up two days after his official trade to the 49ers a year ago, pass rusher Randy Gregory is not being rushed into action following his acquisition Friday from the Denver Broncos, as expected.

Gregory is among the 49ers’ deactivated players for tonight’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, Gregory’s initial team from 2015-21 before he joined the Broncos.

Also out for the 49ers are running back Elijah Mitchell (knee), tight end Jalen Graham, defensive tackle Kalia Davis, offensive lineman Nick Zakelj, tight end Brayden Willis and Allen, the No. 3 quarterback.

  • Vote APC If You Want Ajaokuta Steel Company Resurrected – Shettima Tells Kogi People As Party Flags Off Campaign

The Vice President, Senator Kashin Shetima, on Sunday told residents of Kogi that voting for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Nov. 11 governorship election is as good as revamping Ajaokuta Steel Complex.

Shettima, who made the declaration during the APC’s official flag-off campaign for governorship election in Lokoja, also said “a vote to our party means dredging the river Niger for developmental purposes for Kogi”.

“I am giving you these assurances because the Federal Government is already collaborating with foreign companies towards the resuscitation of Ajaokuta Steel Company and dredging of the River Niger.

“You should understand that the choice of your son, Shuaibu Abubakar Audu as Steel Minister underscores the intention of the APC ruling government toward revamping the steel company.

“We shall by God’s grace dredge the river Niger in a bid to attract meaningful development in Kogi and Nigeria as a whole.

“Of course, all these can only come to fruition if you vote our gubernatorial candidate, Usman, come November 11, for our party to emerge victorious. You can not afford to have a state government that does not belong to the centre,” he said.

The vice president described President Bola Tinubu as a man of courage and conviction, and so pregnant with ideas on how to reposition the nation and Kogi, which is one of the frontier states in the North.

On the battered Ganaja road, he said Tinubu had approved funds for its construction, stressing: “Be rest assured that Abuja-Lokoja-Okene and Kabba-Ilorin is also going to receive government attention to ease movement of the people.”

The APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, said that residents of Kogi could testify of the positive of APC government under the tutelage of Gov. Yahaya Bello.

He said that Bello has not only been able to transform Kogi but has been able to present a successful candidate in Ododo, who would succeed him in providing the desired infrastructure development.

The chairman added: “Since we cannot afford to have a stranger at the Lugard House, we should ensure we have APC at both the national and state levels in order to consolidate on the achievements of Gov. Yahaya Bello.”

On his part, Bello thanked Tinubu for providing the desired support that enabled him to perform and reposition the state to the present status.

Bello recalled that when he took over as governor the state was nowhere in terms of healthcare delivery, education, infrastructure development and others, but “today the story of Kogi is a cheering one”.

The inaugural campaign ceremony was capped with the presentation of the APC flag to the state Governorship Candidate (Ododo) and his deputy, Joel Oyibo.

  • CertificateGate: Atiku Accuses Presidency Of Twisting Facts To Confuse Nigerians

Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has accused the presidency of twisting key facts that indicted president Bola Tinubu of certificate forgery to confuse Nigerians.

Atiku made the allegation on Sunday in a statement issued by his media adviser, Paul Ibe.

Recall Tinubu has been a subject of serious inquest in a US court following decades of controversy surrounding his educational records.

He had provided different accounts that he graduated from a Nigerian College after his initial presentation that he did not attend a college but wrote the senior secondary school certificate examination from home before proceeding to the US fell through.

The president also made another explanation that the certificate which the Chicago State University, CSU, issued to him alongside other students in 1979 upon graduation could not be found after a military attack on his house.

He said he proceeded to obtain a replacement certificate from a third party but three different certificates with various discrepancies are in circulation including the copy he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

These discrepancies including his real name, age, and if indeed he attended CSU after first filing before the country’s electoral body in 1999 when he was vying to be Lagos State Governor, that he graduated from University of Chicago prompted Atiku’s request to put to rest the confusion about the president’s identity.

The CSU indeed acknowledged there was a Bola A. Tinubu, who was its student, said the certificate the president presented to INEC ahead of the 2023 general election was not issued by it.

Atiku in the statement on Sunday highlighted the key takeaways against the president from the court saying, “On page 26 of the deposition which is publicly available, the Registrar of the Chicago State University, Caleb Westberg, under oath, was asked a simple question that, “CSU has determined that it does not have a true and correct copy of the diploma issued to Bola Tinubu is 1979, correct? To which the Registrar responded, “That’s correct.

“Also, on page 27, a similar question was put to Mr. Westberg: So, CSU, after going through every diploma, was unable to find an authentic copy of any diploma that CSU issued to Tinubu in 1979. Is that correct? The CSU Registrar, in his response, said: We did not find any diploma issued by CSU in 1979 to Mr. Tinubu.”

He further stated that when asked whether the CSU is aware of or in possession of the diploma that Tinubu submitted to INEC,” Mr. Westberg simply said, “Correct, we are not aware of it.”

Over the weekend, the confusion surrounding the president’s past worsened when his discharge certificate from the National Youth Service Corps was made public.

The NYSC discharge certificate showed the president commenced his compulsory national service in 1982 ending in 1983 with the name Tinubu, Bola Adekunle.

Soon after the certificate was made public, the president who’s always been known as Bola Ahmed Tinubu had his Wikipedia profile edited to read Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu further raising eyebrows to what more the president could be hiding.

  • JUST IN: Arsenal Beat Manchester City 1-0 At Emirates Stadium

Arsenal on Sunday defeated Manchester City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium in their week 8 of the Premier league season.

Second half goal from Brazilian star, Gabriel Martinelli after 86 minutes gave Arsenal the maximum point in the game that was drab but full of energy.

Both teams adopted technicalities and patience to cancel each other out in the first half.

After coming on top in the first half in which the trajectory of the game shifted in their favour, City could only muster one goal shot on target.

Pep Guardiola’s men almost took the lead when Nathan Ake’s header was cleared off the line.

Arsenal not starting Saka showed clearly while Martinelli started from the bench.

Short of key players, Mikel Arteta started Trossard and Jesus but both could not influence the game in Arsenal’s direction.

Second half began with Arsenal replacing Trossard and the game came alive.

They pressed forward and put City under pressure. They even came close to opening the scoring via a corner.

But City retaliated as the ball was released to Alvarez on the left wing. His cross into the defence was cleared as City searched for a goal.

Despite a flurry of changes City could not dominate proceedings as Stones and Nunes came in for Lewis and Kovacic.

It was Arsenal that broke the deadlock when Martinelli hit a shot that took a huge deflection and found the back of the net to put them a goal ahead.

Arsenal are now second in the table with 20 points behind Tottenham while City are third with 18 points.

  • Don’t be bummed by that cake in the rain

It was a beautiful birthday cake and bound to be tasty. My lovely wife had it all ready to go, with the words “When I’m 64” written in scrumptious-looking frosting.

A couple of volunteers packed the cake out of the house and back to the party in our backyard. And then, in full view of almost 100 guests, there was a misstep and a stumble — and the cake ended up in the grass, upside down.

This is where mere mortals allow parties to go bad. Fortunately, most of my best friends aren’t normal.

The person who dropped the cake (and even landed in part of it) immediately jumped into recovery mode. She scooped the cake up and got most of it back onto the platter (clean parts on the top, of course) and hoisted it onto the bar, a fair amount of frosting in her hair as a souvenir.

And what did we do next?

We started eating the cake, of course. It was delicious!

I saw that moment as yet another legendary chapter in the long-running series of “Wallystock,” the almost-annual birthday bash I started throwing for myself when I turned 50 back in 2009.

It’s a lot of work. It’s also something I recommend everybody try at least once. Otherwise, what are you going to do with this life? See your ever-dwindling-number of surviving friends only at funerals a couple times a year?

Life, of course, flies by, and the older you get, the faster it goes. I’ve yet to hear of a single person on their deathbed who said, “If only I had spent more time working and less time sharing good experiences with people I love.”

That was one catalyst for the party. The other was this: I’m blessed — I repeat, blessed — to have a wide range of friends with a huge mix of beliefs. I believed that under the proper circumstances — say, a party with an open bar and live music — people of mixed beliefs could still peacefully co-exist and maybe even learn they have some things in common, especially if they were told in advance to check their politics at the door.

It worked. Old friendships were reignited (at that first party, I saw people I hadn’t seen in 30 or more years) and new ones forged. It worked so well, we’ve done it 10 times in the past 14 years. (Thus began my belief that people should, on occasion, set aside their differences and find some common ground, even if that ground was recently covered by a cake somebody dropped.)

Like any bold endeavor, this little backyard soiree got out of hand a few times. At one point it crossed the threshold from “party” to “event,” where almost any friend-of-a-friend could buy a wristband ($20 gets you dinner and an open bar!) and show up. We even had a “flyover” a few years, with a friend of mine buzzing the party in his four-seat plane right after somebody had performed the National Anthem. (No, really, and if that doesn’t get you on a first-name basis with your neighbors, I’m not sure whatever could.)

Fortunately, somewhere between “it takes four days to clean up this mess” and “there’s a drunk guy we don’t know throwing your cousin’s stuff into the swimming pool,” we decided to scale back to the smaller, more-manageable, by-invitation-only party it is today.

And it continues. This year we had friends attend from as far away as New Hampshire and Florida. There were also people I knew from my days in Humboldt County and the Bay Area who have long since become friends with the rest of my crowd.

So, when bad things happen, we tend to laugh them off like the seasoned veterans we’ve become. And Lord, we had our share of bad things this time. Long before the cake hit the ground, it rained — not only the night before, but during the party itself. That’s a bummer for any outside event. When your outside event includes your band with electric guitars and amplifiers and microphones and a professional sound system, well, it can be shockingly bad.

So what did we do? After pushing the risk of electrocution about as far as we dared (we’ll remember it as “The Greatest 9-Song Set We Ever Played”), we grabbed our acoustic guitars and kept the party going for hours, with dozens of people crowded together in our tiny tiki bar.

The roof of the bar leaked. Nobody cared. We danced and sang in the rain, kept the fire pits blazing into the early morning hours and ate the remnants of that dropped cake. We hugged, we swapped old stories and created plenty of new ones. Nobody really cared about the fact we’d picked the worst possible day in five months to have a party; we just lived and celebrated the fact we were in each other’s company.

And how special of a lesson is that?

Bad things happen. How we react can either spoil the day, or sometimes turn that day into the greatest gift of them all.

Best party yet. At this stage of life, when you’re surrounded by your friends at anything other than a funeral, they’re all the best.

  • Pope Calls For End To Israel-Palestine War

    Pope-Francis

Pope Francis on Sunday called for prayer for the restoration of peace in the warring nations of Israel and Palestine.

Recall that on October 7, 2023, Palestinian militant groups from the Gaza Strip launched a large-scale offensive against Israel, breaking through the Gaza–Israel barrier and forcing entry into Gaza border crossings, nearby Israeli cities, adjacent military installations, and civilian settlements.

The pope who was speaking at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, called for an end to attacks in Israel as he added that terrorism and war do not lead to a solution.

“War is a defeat. All war is a defeat. Let us pray for peace in Israel and Palestine.

“I follow with apprehension and pain what is happening in Israel. I express my solidarity with the families of the victims,” he told crowds after his traditional Angelus prayer.

He added, “I pray for all those who are living through hours of terror and anguish. May the attacks and the weapons cease, I beg you.

“Terrorism and war do not lead to a solution, but only to the death and suffering of many innocent people.”
