  • Fact Check: No, this video doesn’t show Jada Pinkett Smith promoting free health spending cards

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have starred in many Hollywood movies and television shows over the years, and now social media posts are claiming the couple’s latest venture is hawking free spending cards from the government.

An Oct. 10 Facebook video opens with a clip of Pinkett Smith sitting on a couch and addressing the camera.

“Guys, is everyone ready for another round of stimulus checks? All right then, pay attention before Will starts crying again about me filling you in on this secret. Right now, the gov is paying out Americans by the thousands with these $5,600 health spending cards that get reloaded each and every month,” Pinkett Smith supposedly says in the video, abbreviating government as “gov.”

The video urges people to act now by “clicking the link below,” claiming this offer is only available “until the end of the week.”

Don’t get too excited — this is a scam.

It’s not Pinkett Smith’s voice in the video. The audio has been edited to make it look as if she is promoting this health spending card. The video clip of Pinkett Smith was taken from her TikTok account.

The video also includes clips of Will Smith crying during the 2020 “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunion and slapping comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony.

Another video made a similar claim about health spending cards and used clips of Smith with edited audio.

Flexible spending accounts are a legitimate benefit offered by some health insurance plans that consumers can use to cover health care expenses. But the government doesn’t give out free cash for these accounts; the money is typically contributed from someone’s paycheck before taxes.

The website linked in the post does not mention this offer of a “$5,600 health spending card.” Rather, it advertises free or low-cost health insurance and “premium tax credits” through the Affordable Care Act.

The website is not affiliated with the federal government. The official government website for the Affordable Care Act is HealthCare.gov.

The Federal Trade Commission warns people to beware of health insurance scams. Don’t provide personal information online or over the phone to unverified sources.

We rate the claim that a video shows Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith advertising “$5,600 health spending cards” False.

  • Cross River: Otu Commits To UKaid’s Climate Change, Agriculture Programme

    Cross-River-Governor-Bassey-Edet-Otu-

To promote environmental sustainability and agricultural growth, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has announced his administration’s partnership with the UKaid-funded climate change programme, Propcom+.

The initiative aims to support agroforestry projects that enhance climate resilience and increase the incomes of smallholder farmers in Cross River, through innovative agroforestry and sustainable land management practices.

During a meeting with Propcom+’s Country Representative, Dr. Adiya Ode, and her team at his office in Calabar, Governor Otu expressed his commitment to leveraging the state’s rich biodiversity to enhance environmental conservation and elevate smallholder farmers’ livelihoods.

According to him, climate change needs to be urgently addressed, adding that Cross River must preserve its lush forests to boost eco-tourism.

“Climate change is a serious issue that requires concerted efforts from us. We want to place back Cross River State on the world’s map when it comes to tourism and eco-tourism and protecting our rich forest reserves is central to this.

“Thus we are very keen on revitalising our forestry sector so that we can contribute to reducing the impact of climate change, open up our tourism potential as a state and also empower communities to improve their lives,” Emmanuel Ogbeche, Governor Otu’s Chief Press Secretary, quoted his principal as stating at the meeting.

Dr. Adiya Ode, the Country Representative of Propcom+, in his earlier remark, explained that the programme aims to support over 4 million people in Nigeria, with a special focus on empowering women, by promoting sustainable agricultural practices that enhance productivity, climate resilience, and environmental preservation while reducing emissions.

The program has initially been launched in focal states such as Kano, Jigawa, and Kaduna in the North West, and it is open to collaborating with reform-oriented states like Cross River to align with global policies on sustainable land use and deforestation-free commodities, encouraging more Nigerian states to participate in the African Sustainable Commodities Initiative (ASCI).

“Cross River State has long been recognised as one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots. We see a great opportunity to work with stakeholders in the state, particularly the Government of Cross River State and private sector organisations to harness this huge potential in a way that benefits smallholder farmers.

“We want to link forest protection to economic incentives for farmers, thus Propcom+ will initially focus on forestry initiatives that protect natural resources while improving the livelihoods of smallholders,” Ode said.

Through their partnership with the Otu administration, Propcom+ envisions intensive reforestation and land restoration efforts combined with climate-smart agricultural practices that generate new and alternative livelihoods for farmers.

  • Fact Check: Video game footage mischaracterized as showing a rocket attack in Israel

Just as it was misused to purport claims about the war in Ukraine, video game footage is being framed on social media as showing violence between Israel and Hamas.

“I.s.r.a.e.l- H.a.m.a.s launches rocket attack on The City,” reads a video’s description in an Oct. 10 Facebook post.

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

But watching the video makes clear that this isn’t an authentic recording of a rocket attack. It’s animated, although some of the post’s comments suggest there’s still confusion over whether it’s real.

The account sharing the video describes itself as a “gaming video creator.”

We rate claims this is real footage from the Middle East False.

  • Shonda Rhimes to bring ‘Black Barbie’ documentary to Netflix – Paradise Post

Karu F. Daniels | New York Daily News (TNS)

Netflix uber-producer Shonda Rhimes has snapped up the rights for “Black Barbie: A Documentary,” which chronicles Mattel’s 1980 introduction of the first Black doll, bringing some much-needed diversity to the iconic brand.

The film, first shown at SXSW earlier this year, was written and directed by filmmaker Lagueria Davis, whose aunt Beulah Mae Mitchell worked at Mattel and was one of three Black women who advocated for the groundbreaking toy.

According to the documentary’s logline, “Black Barbie” examines “the importance of representation and how dolls can be crucial to the formation of identity and imagination.”

Cultural commentators, historians and consumers also weigh in on the impact of the doll. Mitchell and other Black women share their own stories of not seeing themselves represented, and how Black Barbie’s arrival affected them.

“Telling Black Barbie’s story has been such a personal journey and it warms my heart to celebrate the legacy of my aunt Beulah Mae Mitchell, Kitty Black Perkins and Stacey McBride Irby in our film,” Davis said in a statement about the documentary’s acquisition. “We couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than Shondaland and Netflix to bring this story to the world.”

During its 2022 International Women’s Day celebration, Mattel released a Barbie doll in Rhimes’ likeness — dressed in a replica of the outfit she wore for a Variety magazine cover story months before.

Netflix’s “Black Barbie” announcement comes on the heels of Greta Gerwig’s history-making, billion-dollar-plus feature film starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as her anatomically correct male counterpart Ken. The all-star cast also features Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Simu Liu and Academy Award winner Helen Mirren.

  • IGP Summons Five Police Officers Who ‘Opened Fire’ On Lagos Driver

    IGP-Kayode-Adeolu-Egbetokun-

Five unnamed police officers in Lagos State have been summoned to the headquarters for alleged unprofessional conduct.

This was disclosed by the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Wednesday.

An X (formerly Twitter) user, 99% Oppressed @PIDOMNIGERIA, had in a post alleged that a young man in a red Toyota Corolla was driving out of a filling station after buying fuel at Ijede Road in the Ikorodu area of the state on Wednesday when some police officers tried to double-cross him.

The poster alleged the police officers opened fire on the young man inside the filling station.

A video shared under the post showed that the red Corolla car had some of its parts damaged.

“This happened a few minutes ago, at Ijede Road Ikorodu Gbaga bus stop, at about 11:10 am,” 99% Oppressed said with an accompanying video.

“The young man in the red Corolla just bought fuel from the filling station and was driving out when this criminal police team tried to double cross him with their unmarked tinted glass Korope bus. He tried to reverse back out of fear, but the next thing they opened fire on him right inside the filling station.

“Even with a petrol tanker inside the station. The people around felt they had killed the driver so they trooped out to confront the police team in anger. The next thing the rogue police team bolted away when they saw the crowd, and realized they were being recorded.

“@BenHundeyin you must unmask these criminals and bring them to book. They wore face masks, caps, and glasses just to disguise themselves because they knew they were on illegal duty. The young man would just been wasted for nothing, because of their rascality if not for God. They destroyed his car and ran away.

“The entire area would have been on flames if the bullet had penetrated that fuel tanker.”

But reacting, Hundeyin said the officers had been identified and summoned to the headquarters for further investigation.

He, however, said that preliminary investigation suggests the driver of the car drove out of the filling station, driving against traffic when the policemen saw him and tried to stop him.

According to him, upon sighting the officers, the said driver reversed back into the filling station, adding that the scratches on the car as well as the cracks on the windscreen were allegedly a result of the Corolla hitting a parked trailer while in reverse.

“The five men led by an ASP, all serving at Area N, Ijede, have been identified and summoned to the headquarters for further investigation and necessary actions.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of the red Corolla with registration number JJJ685GD headed out of the petrol station, driving against traffic. The policemen saw him and attempted to stop him. Upon sighting the officers, the Corolla driver drove in reverse back into the petrol station. All the scratches on the car and cracks on the windscreen allegedly emanated from the Corolla hitting the parked trailer while in reverse.

“The officers were confronted by an irate crowd as the incident escalated. In their bid to prevent further confrontation with the already charged crowd, they left the scene,” Hundeyin said via his X handle @BenHundeyin.

“A detailed investigation is being launched into the incident to ascertain the extent of unprofessionalism of the police officers. The driver of the vehicle and eyewitnesses are encouraged to give useful information, physically or electronically through our various channels.

“The public will be kept updated on the progress of the investigation,” he added.

  • Fact Check: Israel’s Iron Dome intercepts rockets, but this video is from 2021, not October 2023

Israel’s Iron Dome is a defense system that detects incoming rockets and fires missiles to intercept them before they can land in inhabited areas.

But amid ongoing violence since Hamas attacked Israel Oct. 7, some people have shared old footage of the Iron Dome intercepting rockets and mischaracterized it as showing recent warfare.

“#BREAKING,” an Oct. 8 X post said. “Iron Dome active at this moment.”

“H@m@s rockets being intercepted,” an Oct. 10 Instagram post said.

It was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

This footage has been online since May 2021.

Israel Defense Forces, the country’s military, posted it on X and Facebook that year, writing that “4,000 rockets were fired from Gaza toward Israel in the last 10 days.”

Another Facebook user sharing the video that year said the scene showed the Iron Dome, which has been operating since 2011, intercepting rockets above the Israeli city of Ashdod.

Multiple news outlets, including The New York Times, reported on a barrage of rocketfire in Ashdod that month — “the worst violence in years” between the Israeli military and Hamas, the Times said then.

We rate claims that this video shows recent violence between Hamas and Israel False.

  • Fact Check: Blog post fabricates Russian president’s remarks in recent speech

World Economic Forum Chair Klaus Schwab’s detractors may have cheered upon reading remarks recently attributed to Russian President Vladmir Putin.

“Putin warns ‘global terrorist’ #KlausSchwab his ‘days are numbered’ as people all over the world wake up to the strange cult leader who has groomed young people using guile and corruption and inveigled them into power,” reads a screenshot of an X post. “World Economic Forum is losing.”

An Instagram post sharing the screenshot was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The Oct. 6 X post is authentic and links to an Oct. 5 blog post headlined: “Putin warns ‘global terrorist’ Klaus Schwab his ‘days are numbered.”

The blog post said,”World Economic Forum (WEF) founder Klaus Schwab is a ‘globalist terrorist’ who is holding humanity ransom,’ according to Russian President Vladimir Putin who warned the elite that their New World Order has failed and their ‘days are numbered.’”

The post attributed Putin’s remarks to a speech he delivered Oct. 5 at the plenary session of the 20th meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi, Russia.

Putin “emphasized the tectonic and irreversible shifts taking place in the global order,” the post said. “According to Putin, globalists including Schwab and his close advisors are ‘legitimate military targets’ because they have been actively attempting to seize power illegally via a globalist coup d’etat.”

Putin did deliver a keynote speech at an Oct. 5 Valdai Discussion Club meeting in Sochi, discussing the war in Ukraine, nuclear weapons and Russia’s relationship with China.

But he didn’t mention Schwab or threaten him, according to an English translation of Putin’s remarks, which the club published.

We found no credible evidence that Putin made these comments elsewhere.

    We rate this post False.
