  • NUPRC Grants First Petroleum Exploration License Since Commencement Of PIA In 2021

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Commission (NUPRC) in compliance with the provisions of Section 71 (1) – (10) of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 has granted a Petroleum Exploration Licence (PEL) to TGS-PetroData Offshore Services Limited (TGS-PD).

The PEL is the first under the PIA 2021 and is under the licence agreement which the Commission and TGS-PD executed for a Geophysical Survey Project for the acquisition of about 56,000 square kilometres of 3D seismic and gravity data.

The development is another milestone in the smooth implementation of the PIA for the attraction of investment in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.

Without data, reserves cannot be auctioned for development and revenue attraction.

The NUPRC said in a statement that data acquired under the PEL is not proprietary but speculative/multi-client survey data but one acquired in partnership with the commission.

The statement signed by the Commission’s Chief Executive, Engr, Gbenga Komolafe, said, “The licence therefore authorizes TGS-PetroData Offshore to carry out non-exclusive Petroleum Exploration Operations on a multi-client basis within the licensed area and permits the use of the acquired 3D seismic and gravity data by exploration companies.

“Due to the specialized nature of the Geophysical Survey Vessel to be used for the acquisition of the 3D seismic and gravity data, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) granted no objection to TGS-PD to deploy the facility.

“The acquisition of the 3D seismic and gravity data commenced on July 17, 2023, and the processed data will be available for use by mid-2024.”

The NUPRC stated that the scope of the Geophysical Survey Project includes acquisition of about 11,900 sq. km of new 3D seismic and gravity data in water depth ranging from 30m to 4000m offshore Niger Delta, and acquiring seismic and gravity data at the same time will improve the correlation of identified structures and reservoirs among others.

Based on section 71(7) of the PIA, the Commission and Federal Government will benefit from the revenue that will be generated from the data use licence that will be granted to interested exploration companies by TGS-PD.

It added that the new 3D seismic and gravity data being acquired will further provide an opportunity for understanding the regional petroleum system of the ultra-deep waters of Nigeria and unlock the hydrocarbon prospect of Nigeria’s frontier basins (Ultra-deep offshore).

The statement added, “The 3D seismic and gravity data when acquired will be useful in future deep water licencing rounds which will attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) into oil and gas exploration in Nigeria.”

  • Fact Check: Klaus Schwab can’t and didn’t end car ownership

As founder and executive chair of the World Economic Forum, Klaus Schwab doesn’t have the power to end private car ownership anywhere, let alone around the world.

But a recent Instagram post suggests Schwab has that clout, claiming that he has announced “the end of car ownership.”

A video clip shows Schwab saying: “You will use an app like Uber, but not anymore to call some driver but an automatically guided car, a self-driven car, will come to your hotel or wherever you are and will bring you to the airport. Los Angeles is one of the cities with the heaviest traffic who told me in 2030 Los Angeles will be private car driven free. And this will allow to transform highways into parks and other public spheres.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The clip is authentic, from a speech Schwab gave at the 2015 World Governments Summit, an event aimed at inspiring and shaping future generations of governments.

Schwab’s address was titled,”The New Global Context and Its Impact on the Role of Government.”

But it doesn’t amount to an announcement about the end of car ownership.

    We rate that claim False.

  • Head into shopping season ready to manage spending and debt – Paradise Post

    By Tiffany Curtis | NerdWallet

Retailers once again have begun their bid for consumers’ attention with big sales early in fall, such as what amounts to a second Amazon Prime Day sale. A longer holiday shopping season lets you spread out expenses, but it also could lead to overspending.

Danetha Doe, founder of financial education company Money & Mimosas, said in an email, “It’s easy to go into unplanned debt during this time because many of us show love to those we care about by buying gifts or by spending money on travel to be with loved ones.”

NerdWallet’s 2023 holiday shopping report bears that out: 52% of Americans incurred credit card debt from holiday shopping last year, and 31% of them still have lingering balances. Survey results also show that nearly 2 in 5 2023 holiday shoppers (39%) feel pressure to spend more on buying gifts than they’re comfortable spending this year, and 12% of 2023 holiday shoppers say they will likely use some of their emergency savings to buy gifts.

Whether you’re dealing with debt or trying to avoid it, here are some strategies that can help.

    1. Create a spending plan

Take a good look at your finances before you do any spending, and figure out how much you can afford to put toward gifts and other costs. That can help you avoid a financial shock later.

“Developing a spending plan before you enter the holidays will help you avoid waking up on New Year’s Day with a financial hangover,” Doe said. “Your plan could include a list of all of the people you wish to buy a gift for and/or your estimated travel costs if you are visiting loved ones.”

    2. Set financial boundaries

A financial boundary is a limit that you set to protect your money. Boundaries can be especially helpful during the holidays as you navigate the pressure to spend.

“Your financial boundaries may mean that you won’t participate in gift-giving because your money has other priorities,” Doe said. “Perhaps you’re saving up for a home, paying down debt or starting a business.”

Aim to set boundaries before getting into the thick of holiday shopping. For example, you might set a rule of waiting at least a day before completing an online purchase.

“The key to sticking to your financial boundaries is mindfulness,” certified financial therapist Celia Hughes said in an email. She suggested holding items in your online shopping cart for at least 24 hours. “Come back and see if you still want to make the purchase.”

“Slowing down decision-making supports holding down your boundaries,” Hughes said. “If you’re shopping in a store, take pictures of what you want to buy and then go home and sleep on it.”

    3. Spend time rather than money

Money is a source of stress for many people during the holidays. Prioritizing experiences and your relationships can lift worry from you, and your family and friends, by shifting the focus away from spending.

“My advice to everyone, even if you are in a financially healthy place, is to focus your holidays on experiences and relationships,” Hughes said. “It may feel like a leap to move away from extreme consumerism, but when your loved ones remember time together and time with you, it will be easier for that to become the norm.”

    4. Opt for low-cost gift-giving

Choosing to focus on lower-cost gifts is another way to capture the festive spirit without deepening debt or adding financial stress.

“For example, you could exchange handwritten letters of appreciation to each other rather than buying each other gifts,” Doe said. “If you’re feeling artsy, you could offer a DIY gift such as a candle, a hand-drawn card, an air freshener made with fresh spices placed in a Mason jar, ornaments, a candle holder or homemade jam.”

And if you still want to experience some holiday shopping, Hughes suggests: “Consider a gift exchange, where each person secretly draws the name of another family member, and sets a low spend amount, with the task of finding something that reminds you of your favorite thing about that person.”

    5. Use cash

Using cash over cards may help you to be more mindful of your spending — especially during sales.

When you use a credit card, Doe said, “It is so easy to swipe it and forget it, but if you have to pull out the cash, you will be less likely to impulsively spend.”

    6. Make a debt paydown plan

As your spending plan and boundaries help you keep holiday costs down, think about pushing those savings into debt paydown to give yourself the gift of lower balances.

If you need inspiration to stick with it, try the debt snowball method. Focus that extra money on your smallest debt first (still pay at least the minimums on your other debts). Because you’re starting small, you’ll have a shorter time until payoff. When that debt is paid off, turn to the next-biggest.

Or if you’re worried about interest costs, try the debt avalanche method. With this strategy, you focus on the debt with the highest interest rate first.

Also, debt consolidation can help by combining multiple debts into one payment — ideally with a lower interest rate. If you have good credit, you could look into a 0% interest balance transfer credit card or a debt consolidation loan.

  • No Plans For Victims As IMF Releases Statement On Israel-Hamas War

There is no immediate plan for relief for the victims of the Israel-Hamas war as the battle between the warring parties intensifies, a statement released by the International Monetary Fund on Thursday suggests.

In a statement on Thursday released by the IMF press department which is five days after the clash began, the institution mourned the losses in Israel and Gaza but was silent on the issues of aid to the victims.

“The IMF deeply mourns the tragic loss of life of so many civilians in Israel and Gaza. To those who have lost loved ones, to colleagues and partners in the region, and those worried about family and friends, you are in our thoughts.

“We hope that peace and stability prevail,” the IMF said.

Hamas launched a dreadful attack on Israel on Saturday, when they were wrapping up the seven-day-long Jewish festival of Sukkot.

Hamas fired Thousands of missiles from Gaza on indiscriminate targets in Israel leading to death and lots of injuries.

As of Thursday, at least 1,200 people have died as a result of the Hamas assault, IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said.

Israel began retaliation which has led to 1,354 deaths in Gaza, while the Palestinian health ministry said over 4,250 have been wounded since Israel began to retaliate.

At the World Economic Outlook, the IMF said it cannot estimate the impact on the global economy.

IMF’s Director, Research Department said Pierre Olivier Gourinchas said, “We are monitoring closely the situation. One of the things that we have observed already is that oil prices have increased somewhat over the last few days, by about four percent. And of course, this is something that we see often in situations where there is geopolitical instability in the region.

“We see spikes in energy prices and oil prices. We’ve seen that in previous crises and previous conflicts. And, of course, this reflects the potential risk that there could be a disruption either in the production or transport of oil in the region.”

Unlike the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the IMF on the 25, of February released a lengthy statement that assured it would provide relief for Ukraine.

“Today I met with our Executive Board to brief Executive Directors on our initial assessment of the unfolding situation. I assured them that our staff will continue to work closely with the authorities to support Ukraine in every way we can. We will also continue to work hand in hand with the World Bank Group and other partners to coordinate our support and ensure the maximum benefit for Ukraine.

“The Fund has a number of instruments in its toolkit and, as the situation in Ukraine evolves, we will continue to discuss with the authorities how we can best assist them.

“These discussions are being conducted remotely with staff participating from Washington. In addition to ongoing policy advice, we are exploring all options for further financial support, including under the existing Stand-By Arrangement for an outstanding amount of US$2.2bn.

“The authorities have also requested IMF emergency financing,” part of the statement of the IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva reads.

  • Fact Check: How to avoid misinformation about the war in Gaza

Social media is flooded with out-of-context videos and images users claim are coming from Israel or Gaza. Finding the original source is key.

The war between Hamas and Israel is playing out on social media through graphic images and videos shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.

But, like any conflict we’ve watched from our phone screens in the last decade, misinformation is rampant — including videos claiming to show Israeli children being held in cages and a fake BBC reporter fanning the flames of war. Fortunately, as with any breaking news event, like the ongoing war in Ukraine, some journalistic thinking and media literacy techniques can help you avoid sharing misinformation.

As director of the Poynter Institute’s digital media literacy initiative MediaWise, I recommend first asking three questions developed by the Stanford History Education Group in its study of how fact-checkers navigate the internet:

    • Who’s behind the information?
    • What’s the evidence?
    • What do other sources say?

To answer the first question, leave the page you’re on, open a few tabs, and use keywords to find out more about a user or news outlet from a post. This is called lateral reading.

There are a lot of self-proclaimed experts in Middle Eastern geopolitics on social media right now. To sift through the noise, search for their name, the organization with which they’re affiliated, the university on their LinkedIn page and their username and scan results to gauge their expertise. Don’t click the first result you see — look for a link from a familiar source or fact-checking outlet — this technique is called click restraint.

Most of the falsehoods stemming from the conflict are in the form of old videos or photos, or visuals with misleading captions. Your best tool against these fakes: reverse image search.

Download the photo, or grab a screenshot of a notable section of the video you’re checking out, and drop it into Google Lens or TinEye to find the original source. Consider this false post claiming to show a high-ranking Israeli general detained by Hamas. With a screenshot, I tracked down a Russian news site that posted the same video — about an arrest in Azerbaijan from a week ago.

While I remain concerned about generative artificial intelligence supercharging the creation of disinformation, I’ve yet to see any significant AI images or videos. Still, it’s worth remaining on guard, and checking images for watermarks, warped features, too many fingers or other inconsistencies.

Of course, the best advice for avoiding misinformation is to simply avoid social media. If you, like me, are addicted to X, then the second-best advice is to follow a curated list of experts about what’s happening. David Clinch, a veteran journalist and media expert, created a useful list here, which includes journalists from Al-Jazeera English to Haaretz.

The war between Israel and Hamas has accelerated the spread of misinformation and broadened its reach due to graphic and emotional visuals, a deeply political conflict whose repercussions are felt around the world and a wealth of unreliable sources. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to share anything about the conflict on social media.

  • 49ers’ Randy Gregory seeks career revival post-Broncos disappointment

SANTA CLARA — The problem for Randy Gregory has never been playing on the edge in a football sense.

Virtually everyone agrees he is an explosive, twitchy athlete who at 6-foot-5 and 242 pounds was born to rush the passer.

Living on the edge in an everyday sense has been more of a problem, although Gregory has worked to sort out myriad issues which have stalled his ascension to being the kind of player his skillset suggests.

Acquired by the 49ers at virtually no risk from the Denver Broncos late last week, Gregory went through his first practice with his new team Wednesday and was asked if he was ready to be an immediate contributor Sunday against the host Cleveland Browns.

“I don’t doubt it, but it’s not up to me,” Gregory said. “It’s practice, and the rest of the week will tell what I’m able to do out there.”

Signed as the heir apparent to Von Miller by the Broncos before the 2022 season, Gregory wound up playing in 10 of 21 games because of knee and shoulder injuries. The Broncos, under new coach Sean Payton, dealt him and a seventh-round draft pick to the 49ers in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

Not only that, but Denver will pay more than $10 million in salary for the rest of the season with the 49ers on the hook for only a prorated portion of the veteran minimum. Salaries of $13.745 million in 2024 and $12.745 million in 2025-26 are not guaranteed.

In Denver, they’re calling it the worst free agent signing in franchise history.

Gregory, who at one point missed 52 of 96 games on four suspensions for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, has steered clear of trouble since October 2020. But with the Broncos floundering on defense — Gregory didn’t register a tackle in a 70-20 loss to Miami in Week 3 — they opted to move on.

“You know how the NFL goes. I’d been there for two years, I had two new staffs,” Gregory said. “They’re looking to rebuild, get some new leadership. Ultimately I wasn’t part of that plan.”

As far as his personal life, Gregory, 30, believes he is in a good place. He’s married with children aged 7 and 4, as well as a 6-month-old baby.

“I have everything where it needs to be,” Gregory said. “Mentally, if I’m in order in that aspect I’m pretty good. My family life is pretty good right now. Kids are happy, fed. I have a newborn so I’m little bit worried about that. I want to be home with him, but I understand what’s at stake but I’m a big boy and I’ve got a job to take care of.”

In a 2021 interview with The Athletic, Gregory detailed a past that included using marijuana and psychedelics in his teens while still being a standout at Hamilton Southeastern High in Fishers, Indiana. He began failing drug tests in college at Nebraska following two years in junior college at Arizona Western.

Although dominant at Nebraska, teams dug into his background and he went from a potential top-10 pick to a second-rounder by Dallas. There were bouts with with social anxiety disorder and losing large sums of money at casinos.

Gregory managed to rebuild his career in 2020 and 2021 in Dallas with 9 1/2 sacks and was a disruptive presence in a 2021 playoff loss to the 49ers, earning a big contract in Denver.

Through it all, Gregory was never considered a disruptive presence in the locker room.

“Randy was a great teammate, never gave anybody any problems,” said 49ers cornerback Anthony Brown, a teammate in Dallas. “Never caused any commotion. Gave his all on the field and I’m glad we have him here.”

Dallas owner Jerry Jones told The Athletic: “There is a warmth to Gregory. He’s engaging and thoughtful. He smiles almost all the time. “He’s one of the most popular players we’ve had on the Cowboys. Everybody roots for him.”

Coach Kyle Shanahan said “guys close to him and guys that I know vouch for him” and respected locker room leaders Trent Williams and Arik Armstead gave the acquisition an enthusiastic thumbs-up last week.

Gregory went home to Denver to for the weekend and watched the 49ers’ 42-10 win over his former team with interest.

“I have a lot of guys I care about on that team in Dallas and staff I care about,” Gregory said. “Being able to sit there and watch it unfold, being a rivalry game, was fun. I spent time there, but I’m on a new team an excited to get that win.”

Gregory realized instantly his old team was in deep trouble against his new one when the 49ers got the ball and drove 75 yards for a touchdown to open the game.

“Me and my wife were talking about it, thinking the Cowboys look a little spooked,” Gregory said. “That’s not bulletin board material, but it speaks to the level of intensity we came out with and carried out throughout the course of the game.”

Gregory’s previous transgressions have invited skeptics, which he understands but hopes to win over through his play.

“The big thing for me is trying to prove people wrong and put the NFL back on notice, doing the things I can do well and end up being a good teammate,” Gregory said.

The hope for the 49ers is Gregory can add another potential rusher off the edge to complement Bosa, who has 1 1/2 sacks through three games but according to ProFootballFocus.com is among league leaders among edge rushers in pressures with 27.

Second-year player Drake Jackson has no sacks since getting three in the opener and Clelin Ferrell as expected has shown an ability to set the edge but has no sacks as a pass rusher.

  • POS Agents ‘Steal’ Employer’s N942m In Lagos

Two Point of Sale (POS) agents on Thursday appeared before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, for allegedly stealing N942 million belonging to their employer.

The defendants – Chigozie Omeje, 26; and Irene Andrew, 29; whose addresses were not given, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, cybercrime and theft.

    They, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, ASP Jimoh Joseph, told the court that the defendants and some others at large committed the offences in June and July at Odugunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Joseph alleged that the defendants conspired and used a POS machine to manipulate the security system to steal the money.

He said that while the defendants worked with their employer, Shago POS Terminals, they fraudulently transferred a total of N942 million to their personal bank accounts and other bank accounts.

Joseph said that the offences contravened Section 12 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 2015.

The prosecutor said that the offences were also punishable under Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs F. M. Kayode Alamu, admitted each of the defendants to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties.

She ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendant, adding that the sureties must show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Alamu adjourned the case until Oct. 31 for mention.

  • Fact Check: Memo showing White House approved $8 billion to Israel is altered

After Hamas launched attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, social media users circulated a document they said showed the U.S. immediately coming to Israel’s aid.

“The U.S. is sending $8B worth of military aid to Israel,” read the text in an Oct. 7 TikTok video.

The video showed a screenshot of a supposed White House memorandum dated Oct. 7, titled, “Memorandum on the Delegation of Authority Under Section 506(a)(1) of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.”

    The screenshot read:

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 621 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (FAA), I hereby delegate to the Secretary of State the authority under section 506(a)(1) of the FAA to direct the drawdown of up to $8 billion in defense articles and services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training, to provide assistance to Israel and to make the determinations required under such section to direct such a drawdown.

    (Screengrab from TikTok)

This claim was amplified in other social media posts, including an Oct. 8 Instagram post that misspelled Israel and read,  “US reportedly plans to give Isarel 8 billion dollars in military aid.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

This is an altered photo. A memo with the same title and nearly identical text was published on the White House website, but it was dated July 25, and it authorized the drawdown of up to $400 million to aid Ukraine, not $8 billion to aid Israel.

The White House did not immediately respond to PolitiFact’s query about the social media claims.

President Joe Biden issued a statement Oct. 7 condemning Hamas’ attacks in Israel, saying he made clear to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “We stand ready to offer all appropriate means of support to the Government and people of Israel.”

An Oct. 8 readout of a call between Biden and Netanyahu says that Biden told Netanyahu that additional assistance for the Israeli Defense Forces is “now on its way to Israel with more to follow over the coming days.”

The U.S. is sending multiple military ships and aircraft closer to Israel and will supply the Israel Defense Forces with munitions, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said. An Oct. 10 readout of another call between Biden and Netanyahu showed Biden said U.S. support is being sent in “ammunition, Iron Dome interceptors, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, and other defense materiel.”

Additional U.S. aid requires congressional approval, which could hit obstacles as the House seeks to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., as speaker.

But the memorandum authorizing the drawdown of $8 billion to Israel is fake. We rate this claim False.

  • Bay Area firefighter goes viral for Dallas Cowboys meme

Eugene Hernandez wants to make clear he wasn’t calling his bookie when caught on camera talking on his phone at the 49ers game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. And he wasn’t calling out of work either.

In the moment that became a meme which went viral on social media almost instantly during the 49ers 42-10 blowout of his Dallas Cowboys, the costume clad Hernandez answered a call from a friend who wanted to tell him they had seen him on TV. The photo has been posted with captions including  “Mom, can you pick me up?” and “Yeah, so about that money I told you to bet on the Cowboys for me.” A video of Hernandez was even shared on ESPN’s Tik Tok account, garnering over 80,000 likes.

But Hernandez, a Vacaville firefighter who lives in Lodi, has taken the attention and the jokes at his team’s expense in stride, immediately making memes of his own and starting an instagram account under the handle @Cowboysphoneguy to keep the jokes coming. He said his colleagues at the fire department have been ruthless since he went viral, but the banter has still been fun.

Hernandez said he went to the game at Levi Stadium — hardly a friendly environment for Cowboys fans — with his wife, as well as with his father-in-law and his wife.

“I was one of few Cowboys fans within that area,” he said.

The family have made a point to go to Cowboys vs Niners games over the years, he said, even driving to witness a home Cowboys loss to San Fransisco in Dallas.

“That was a very long 24-hour ride back,” he said.

But the atmosphere at the games, Hernandez said, is incredible.

“Running into other Cowboys fans is great,” he said. “Hooping and hollering, high-fiving each other, the camaraderie is awesome.”

President of the Vacaville Firefighter’s Association Matt Moreno said he was watching the game with his wife, and initially didn’t notice Hernandez because of the elaborate costume he was wearing. Once he did, he took a photo of the TV and sent it to Hernandez, as many others did in the moment.

Moreno said he instantly predicted that this moment would become a meme, and it was taking off online before the game was even over.

“I will say that he couldn’t take this thing any better,” Moreno said. “He couldn’t be a better sport.”

Moreno himself is a Dolphins fan, but many Vacaville firefighters are obviously 49ers fans.

“When your team gets beat by the Niners, when you come to work it’s pretty ruthless,” he said.

But sports banter and fantasy football, says Moreno, give crews something positive to focus on outside of their difficult job.

“It makes everything that we’re seeing and doing,” he said, “it helps make it kind of go away.”

Hernandez became a Cowboys fan because of his grandmother, who moved to Lodi from Texas and raised him as a Dallas fan.

He said he grew up without a lot of advantages, and had lots of coaches and teachers who helped him throughout high school as he worked not to go down a dark path. While he was in college, he said, his father went into liver failure and he was forced to attempt CPR until paramedics arrived. Later, he had to carry his grandmother out of their house to wait for paramedics after she was wounded in an oil fire.

Those experiences were formative for him, says Hernandez.

I reassessed my career,” he said. “Knowing that I wanted to do something with the community and give back, because the community gave so much to me, I found the calling to become a firefighter.”

Moreno said he is uplifted by the chance to work with Hernandez.

“He’s that guy that he had a choice in life to be a victim or be victorious,” Moreno said, “and he chose to be a victor.”

Hernandez saw what was going on around him as a young man and decided on a different path, Moreno said. He’s able to relate to a lot of life experiences, he said, which is helpful to have on the force.

“It’s pretty inspiring to work with a guy like that,” Moreno said, “to see what he could have been, and what he is now”

Moreno said Hernandez’s nickname is El Toro, because he puts his head down and works hard like a bull.

The department is a small one as fire departments in the region go, Moreno said, and they have about 90 members on their suppression staff. Most members are local, and the department is best known for its philanthropic work.

That work develops trust in the community, he said. The department has raised nearly $1 million since 2012.

“That’s what I’m most proud about,” he said. “Is that we’re not just out saving lives but we’re affecting lives on and off duty.”

And like his beloved team this week, Hernandez is looking to shake off the loss and stay in stride.

“I just want to let everybody know that we are still ‘Dem Boys,” he said.

  • PenCom Has Made Life After Retirement Enjoyable For RSA Account Holders -NECA

The Nigeria Employers Consultative Association on Thursday hailed the National Pension Commission for the proactive manner in which the commission is implementing the Pension Reforms Act of 2014.

The association stated that the Commission has made life after retirement enjoyable for Retirement Savings Account holders under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The Director-General of NECA, Mr Adewale Smatt Oyerinde said these at the opening session of the PenCom/NECA interactive session on the Contributory Pension Scheme for the Organized Private Sector.

The objectives of the interactive session which was held in Abuja include enlightening the OPS on the workings of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), sharing thoughts on emerging developments in the Nigerian pension space and providing an opportunity for Pension Operators to interact with the members of the OPS among others.

He said before 2014, life after was uncertain and unpredictable, adding that with the Pension Reform Act 2014, the narration has changed significantly.

He pledged the association’s support to PenCom in growing the pension industry in Nigeria, adding that this is one of the viable ways to further develop the Nigerian economy.

The NECA Boss said, “Before 2014, life after retirement could be described as uncertain and unpredictable. However, with the Pension Reform Act 2014, the narration has changed significantly.

“Significantly because no matter the efforts put into a system or process, there will always be room for improvement. Thus, following the enactment of the Act and with successive PenCom leadership, we have had series of improvements and innovation in the administration of the Pension Scheme.

“The Private sector remain committed to the success of the Pension Scheme as long as our concerns are not only noted but also addressed expeditiously.”

In her opening remarks at the event, the Director-General of PenCom, Mrs Aisha Dahir-Umar commended NECA for offering its platform for continuous social dialogue with the members of the OPS on the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme in Nigeria.

These social dialogues, according to her, have generated an invaluable impact on the implementation of the CPS over the years.

The PenCom DG described the pension industry as one of the fastest-growing financial sectors in Nigeria, adding that at the end of the third quarter of 2023, the number of RSAs under the CPS stood at 10 million and the size of the pension Asset Under Management amounted to N16.76 trillion.

She said, “The Commission has continued to take giant strides towards ensuring the smooth implementation of the CPS through the revision of existing regulations and guidelines and the development of new ones.

“Specifically, the Commission deployed the Enhanced Contributors Registration System (ECRS) for the pension industry. Following, the deployment of the ECRS, the Commission also introduced the Data Recapture Exercise (DRE), which mandatorily requires all RSA holders who joined the CPS prior to the 1st of July 2019 to update their information with their respective Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

“Accordingly, the Commission has consistently urged RSA holders to approach their PFAs for Data Recapture.”

In order to facilitate the implementation of Section 13 of the PRA 2014 which allows an RSA holder to transfer his/her RSA from one PFA to another at least once in a year, Dahir-Umar explained that the Commission developed and deployed the RSA Transfer System (RTS) in 2020.

The RTS is a computer-based application for initiating, processing, and monitoring the RSA Transfer process.

It also ensures the seamless transfer of RSAs from one PFA to another. Among others, the PenCom DG said the opening of the RSA transfer window has continued to improve the quality of service delivery by the PFAs.

To ensure that RSA holders own a house during their work life, the Commission, she added has released the Guidelines on Accessing Retirement Savings Account (RSA) Balance towards Payment of Equity Contribution for Residential Mortgage by RSA Holders.

She said, “Members of the OPS would recall that following the enactment of the PRA, the Commission was saddled with the responsibility of supervising the transfer of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) contributions of employees into their respective RSAs under the CPS.

“To date, contributions worth N10.20 billion have been transferred to the RSAs of 142,486 NSITF Scheme contributors. Thus, in order to ensure that all contributors under the NSITF Scheme have their NSITF contributions transferred to their RSAs, the Commission had severally featured advertorials in National Dailies requesting NSITF contributors to apply for the transfer of their contributions.

“The Commission wishes to implore all employers to encourage their employees who have contributed to the NSITF Scheme to liaise with their PFAs and in particular Trustfund Pensions for guidance on how to have their contributions transferred to their RSAs.”

She added that the Commission will always support NECA to champion programmes that will ensure the successful implementation of the CPS in Nigeria.
