  • Bob Myers weighs in on Klay Thompson’s negotiation with Warriors

With the Warriors’ regular season beginning a week from Tuesday, Klay Thompson could begin the year without a new contract.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Sunday that it’s not looking likely that the two sides will come to an agreement anytime soon.

“I’m told that there has been absolutely no progress on a Klay Thompson extension in Golden State,” Wojnarowski said. “They are both still apart on years and money, and there’s a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal.”

Thompson, who turns 34 in February, is nearing an end to the five-year, $190-million maximum contract he signed on July 10, 2019.

Former Warriors general manager Bob Myers, now working as an ESPN analyst, offered his assessment of the situation.

“This is why I left,” Myers said jokingly. “A lot of time people will say, ‘this is just business.’ But this is not just a business situation. There’s going to be a statue of this guy outside of Chase Center. He was instrumental at bringing four championship. He’s beloved inside the organization and with the fanbase. It’s not as simple as money and years.”

Thompson scored 12 points in 17 minutes during the Warriors’ 121-115 win over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night.

He was asked last week if he thinks it’s possible he’d sign a new deal before the season begins.

“I think it’s possible,” he said. “If not, life is still great.”

Speaking on ESPN on Sunday, Myers said this would be a complicated negotiation.

“This is why it’s hard for me, because you have relationships with people,” Myers said. “Especially if you’ve succeeded with them. And that core has been together for 12 years. That’s just so rare now. That just doesn’t happen. So this is a delicate negotiation.

“From what I know and see, he wants to stay. They want him to stay. Doesn’t mean it’ll happen. But it is a test. And it’s probably the first real test.”

  • Lagos Shuts Down Hospital For Transfusing Unscreened Blood To Patients

    Blood-Transfusion

The Lagos State Government has shut a private hospital at Ago-Okota in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area, for collecting and transfusing unscreened and unlabelled blood to unsuspecting patients.

Dr Bodunrin Osikomaiya, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS), said this in a statement signed by Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, Director, Public Affairs, state Ministry of Health, on Sunday in Lagos.

Osikomaiya said the LSBTS in collaboration with the state Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) sealed the facility following a tip-off from a concerned citizen.

“Following the tip off, and after thorough investigations, the enforcement teams of LSBTS and HEFAMAA, during their joint monitoring exercise in the area, visited the facility and confirmed to be true, the unwholesome, unprofessional and unethical medical practices and conduct of the hospital management,” Osikomaiya said.

She added that the facility was shut for contravening the blood transfusion service law and for unethical and unprofessional medical practice, as well as putting the lives of unsuspecting citizens at risk.

“The law states that no person within Lagos State shall transfuse blood into a patient unless such blood has been screened, tested, labeled by the state blood transfusion committee, and found to be negative for all transmissible diseases including HIV I and II, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis and any other disease as may be deemed necessary by LSBTS,” she said.

Osikomaiya said the details of the blood donors and transfusion recipients had been retrieved from the management of the hospital.

She noted that patients who were transfused with the unscreened units of blood at the facility were being traced as part of protocol to ascertain their clinical health status and ensure their safety.

Osikomaiya stressed that the management of the hospital and workers found culpable in the unwholesome act would be prosecuted in accordance with appropriate laws.

She the agency had rejigged its strategies in sanitising the state against unethical blood transfusion practices and continued to wage war against unwholesome practice of transfusing unscreened blood in the state.

Osikomaiya appealed to citizens to support the war against unwholesome blood transfusion service by reporting infractions and unwholesome practices when they see any.

She also implored health workers and stakeholders involved in the blood transfusion chain, including blood banks, blood donation centres, and logistics firms to adhere strictly to WHO regulations and the state Blood Transfusion laws on blood donation, collection and transfusion.

“This war against unwholesome blood transfusion practices involves and affects every citizen, and as a result, the LBTS will step up the tempo through continuous monitoring of all facilities concerned with blood transfusion,” she said.

Osikomaiya said this would ensure a safe and wholesome blood transfusion chain and guarantee the safety of all citizens residing in the state.

  • Jonathan Kuminga leads Warriors to overtime win vs. Kings

SACRAMENTO — Even without Steph Curry and Chris Paul, and playing in a game that means nothing in the standings, the Warriors and Sacramento Kings played some entertaining preseason basketball at the Golden 1 Center on Sunday night.

The Warriors overcame a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to force overtime, then knocked off the Kings with a 121-115 victory to move to 3-0 in the preseason.

Still, there’s little doubt that the Kings have something to prove after the Warriors eliminated them from the postseason in April.

It was here at the Golden 1 Center that the Warriors won a crucial Game 5 in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, then laid an egg in Game 6 at home before going back to Sacramento and watching Curry score 50 points on their way to a series win.

The Kings are back this season with a similar look, and the Domantas Sabonis-Da’Aaron Fox combination was on full display again on Sunday night in the Kings’ first home game since their postseason elimination.

Fox, who is coming off an All-Star season in which he was also named the NBA Clutch Player of the Year, looked like the fastest player on the floor as he scored 17 points with five rebounds and six assists in 26 minutes.

Sabonis scored 19 while hauling in 11 rebounds. He also went 2-for-2 from 3-point range when the Warriors gave him plenty of space to shoot behind the arc.

The Warriors offered a different look on Sunday, going with rookie Brandon Podziemski at point guard.

    The takeaways:

    1. Podziemski gets moving

It was right after Brandin Podziemski set his third screen of a first-quarter possession that he slipped his defender and got loose on the perimeter.

As soon as the ball found him, he dribbled past Trey Lyles, turned inside, drew three defenders, pump-faked, then ducked underneath Lyles and went to the hoop for an easy underhand bucket.

While Podziemski is clearly still finding his way in the Warriors offense, he’s already made one thing clear about his game: he never stops moving.

Sunday, the rookie from Santa Clara University offered some glimpses of what made him the No. 19 overall pick in June.

And a handful of rookie mistakes, too.

With a battery that seemed to never run out, Podziemski was constantly in motion. Early in the first quarter, he crashed the boards to win a defensive rebound that led directly to a Klay Thompson bucket. The next defensive possession, he did it again, this time fighting off the 7-foot-1 Domantas Sabonis on a rebound to induce a turnover.

  • Falana Reveals How NASS Can Urgently Address Education Needs Of 18.5 million Out-Of-School Children

A Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana Sunday, explained how the National Assembly can urgently address the basic education needs of about 18.5 million out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Falana in a statement lamented that lawmakers have been making needless resolutions that have not translated to promotion of universal access to basic education.

Falana opined that since each of the 36 States of the Federation have adopted the Child’s Rights Act and enacted a Child’s Right Law, it is the joint responsibility of the Federal, State and Local Governments to ensure that every Nigerian child is given access to free and compulsory education.

He noted, however, that relevant laws have been breached by stakeholders because the members of the political class drawn from all registered political parties have not demonstrated any commitment to the education of every child in Nigeria.

“Hence, the members of the legislative and executive organs of governments have allegedly failed to appreciate the danger of having 18.5 million out-of-school children, the highest number in the world,” Falana stated.

In view of this, the senior lawyer called for Constitution amendment to urgently fix the loopholes negatively affecting basic education in Nigeria.

He added, “What the National Assembly should do instead is address the refusal of state governments to make counterpart contributions to the Universal Basic Education Fund pursuant to section 2 of the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Act.

“As a matter of urgency, the National Assembly should ensure the amendment of the Constitution to empower the Accountant-General of the Federation to deduct from the source the counterpart fund payable by every state government to the Universal Basic Education Fund,” he stated.

  • Steph Curry, Chris Paul out of Warriors preseason game vs. Kings

SACRAMENTO — After just two preseason games with Steph Curry and Chris Paul on the court together, the Warriors made a change.

Both Curry and Paul were being held out to rest in the team’s third preseason game.

Curry scored 18 points in 21 minutes and Paul scored six points in 20 minutes during the Warriors’ 129-125 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.

Sunday, playing the Kings for the first time since the NBA Playoffs, the Warriors entered the game with rookie Brandin Podziemski starting at point guard alongside Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga and Kevon Looney.

Kuminga, who is leading the NBA with 25 points per game through two games, also leads the Warriors with 51 minutes played this preseason.

  • What Is In A Name?

    Nwando-Aligwekwe

When a name is given by the Igbos in Nigeria to a newborn baby, the name usually has a meaning. It may have to do with circumstances surrounding the birth of that child, a name one has heard before that has a meaning they relate to or prophetic words into the life of that child.

My first name means “All things belong to God” and my middle name means “A child is a shade/covering”. I imagine that the second name was born of prophetic words from my parents

Did you know that the names of God all have meaning? Each is relevant to the different situations that you could find yourself in. He is Elohim, our creator. He made the heavens and the earth and all that is in it.

He created us and knows every intricate part of us. He is El Elyon, the Mighty God, El-Shaddai, the Almighty. He is bigger than all the situations, circumstances and problems you have in your life. Everything pales in comparison to the presence of God. There is no one like Him nor is there any that could ever begin to compare with Him.

He is El-Roi, the God who sees. He sees your tears, He knows you by name, and even more than that, the Bible says He saves those tears in His bottle. He is Jehovah Raah, our shepherd. Guiding us like a shepherd does, asking us to just listen to Him and follow Him.

He is Abba, our Father. He is not just God, He is our Daddy, loving us so much more than we can ever imagine. He is Jehovah Jireh, our provider, able to provide us with more than we can ever imagine or ask for in our wildest dreams. He is Jehovah Rapha, our healer. There is no disease God cannot heal.

He is Jehovah Nissi, our banner, our victory. He had already won it all when Jesus died on the cross. He is Jehovah Shammah, He is there. Present with us. Never leaving us or forsaking us. In fact, He said He has engraved us in the palms of His hands.

Would you want God to manifest in your life in all these ways His names show that He can and is eager to? You just need to ask Him. He is eager to have a close relationship with you. Just ask Him today. He awaits your call, for you to invite Him in. I pray that you take that bold step today. It’s the best thing you could ever do in this life.

  • 49ers deserved to lose to Browns, await McCaffrey, Deebo injury news

Sunday will be remembered as the day Brock Purdy returned to earth and the 49ers were suddenly exposed as vulnerable, as opposed to a buttoned-up powerhouse headed toward a seemingly inevitable sixth Lombardi Trophy.

Or maybe a 19-17 road loss to the Cleveland Browns will be forgotten as easily as a Week 6 loss a year ago.

Last year the 49ers went to Atlanta and got manhandled 28-14. They gave up 168 yards rushing and were pushed around physically by a team quarterbacked by Marcus Mariota.

So before despairing, keep in mind an NFL season has a lot of twists and turns. Just ask the Philadelphia Eagles, 20-14 losers to the New York Jets as both NFL unbeatens were knocked off on the same day.

The 49ers appeared to accept the defeat in the proper spirit, declining to place blame on some questionable officiating or a missed 41-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds by Jake Moody.

Had Moody split the uprights, the 49ers would have been 6-0 but still come home with a laundry list of corrections and concerns after putting a game in the win column they really didn’t deserve.

They got outplayed, they knew it and the scoreboard accurately reflected which was the better team.

The 49ers are still 5-1, and of significantly more importance than their first loss are forthcoming medical updates on Christian McCaffrey (oblique), Deebo Samuel (shoulder) and Trent Williams (ankle). Samuel left first, McCaffrey followed and although Williams finished the game, he left the stadium in a walking boot on his right foot.

“I don’t think we deserved to win today,” defensive end Nick Bosa said.

“We didn’t earn it,” said linebacker Fred Warner.

It’s not like the Browns (3-2) did anything to surprise the 49ers. They were going to play stifling defense, run the ball and hope for the best. Mission accomplished to the tune of the defense surrendering 215 yards to a team averaging 402.6, and the offense rushing for 160 yards against a team giving up 96.2.

“When you’re getting in third-and-longs, second-and-longs, the playbook shrinks down about 80 percent,” Williams said. “You’ve only got so many calls you can call and when you’re behind the chains you play into that defense’s wheelhouse.”

Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski called it “dragging them down in the mud with us” and the 49ers, who pride themselves on physical toughness on both sides of the ball, were beaten to the punch in both areas.

If McCaffrey, Samuel and Williams are still part of the picture in the near future, a single loss in mid-October won’t come anywhere near defining their season or prevent the 49ers from another deep run into the postseason.

To focus on the placekicker or the penalties is to miss the overall picture of a one-week snapshot over a 17-game span.

“My message to them was regardless of whether we hit that (field goal) or not, there’s a lot of stuff in this game that we’ve got to improve on,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We made way too many mistakes, just losing a couple of guys in the game, we had to switch a couple of guys around and we weren’t quite ready for that. Which starts with me, with too many mistakes.”

The amazing thing is the 49ers almost got out of Cleveland with a win. Because after an opening 84-yard touchdown drive, Purdy and Co. were rendered helpless by a Browns defense that lived up to its considerable hype.

P.J. Walker, a practice squad player elevated to starter, was the best quarterback on the field even with two interceptions — including one by Deommodore Lenoir to set up the 49ers’ second touchdown on an 8-yard run by Jordan Mason.

A good sign for the 49ers is that their approach after losing in the regular season for the first time in 16 games is their willingness to accept responsibility for the end result.

Believe me, there are teams — I can think of one in particular I covered for 25 years in Oakland — that would have latched onto questionable calls against Tashaun Gipson and Charvarius Ward as if they were lifeboats on the Titanic as excuses in defeat.

Those flags made possible a 29-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins with 1:40 to play to make it 19-17, points that stood up when Moody missed his chance to miss a game-winner.

  • 11 Employees Of Lekki Night Club To Be Arraigned On Monday For Assaulting LASEPA Officials

The Lagos State government has vowed to prosecute 11 employees of 10 POTS Night Club, Lekki, for assaulting officials of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and breaking the seal of LASEPA.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, spoke on Sunday, following the arrest of the employees of the nightclub.

According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adeshina, Wahab stated that they will all be arraigned before appropriate courts of law on Monday, along with the property owner, to “serve as a deterrence to others who might consider embracing such illegal options.”

Employees of 10 POTS Night Club, Lekki

The nightclub was earlier sealed for environmental infractions, but the arrested employees allegedly removed the seal of LASEPA which was used to secure the premises between 11.11 am and 11.33 am on Saturday, following enforcement activities.

“By 12.44pm when LASEPA operatives returned to the club, it had been reopened and back to business. Attempts to reseal the premises were violently resisted by the staffers, inflicting bodily harm on state officials, necessitating the call for reinforcement of security,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the premises of the nightclub has been resealed by the LASEPA after the State Task Force on Environmental Offences officers took the 11 arrested employees into custody.

  • 49ers talk “learning experience”, missed chances after loss to Browns

The 49ers suffered their first loss of the 2023 season, a 19-17 defeat Sunday in rainy Cleveland.

Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey both were ruled out for the game due to injuries, and Brock Purdy struggled without them, going 12-for-27 for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The offense stalled after a first-drive touchdown by McCaffrey on a shovel pass, rookie kicker Jake Moody went 1-for-3 on field-goal attempts (including a miss to win the game), and two late penalties on close calls harmed their chances of winning.

Here is what the 49ers had to say after the game:

    Kyle Shanahan

On Moody’s missed kick to win the game:

It’s always tough to miss that last kick but that happens in football. They played better than us today. That was the last play, but there was a lot more to today than just that.

On the sequence before the kick:

Just trying to get more yards and letting it go down, and then we wanted to leave it there

On his message to the team:

My message to them was regardless of whether we hit that (FG) or not, there’s a lot of stuff in this game that we got to improve on. We made way too many mistakes, just losing a couple guys in the game, we had to switch a couple guys around and we weren’t quite ready for that, which starts with me with too many mistakes.

    On missed chances:

We did some good things in the first half, we had two opportunities in the first half to get really big plays that I think would have changed a lot of it and we missed both of them.

    On the offensive struggles:

It wasn’t just Brock, it was everybody. Everybody had their turn on offense, especially, and it starts with me.

    On Tashaun Gipson’s penalty:

My view was his intent wasn’t at all to do that. It looked like the receiver was coming in there jumping, too. It looked like they touched helmets from where I was. I don’t have much of an opinion, it just didn’t look that violent.

On what makes the Browns’ defense good:

Talent with scheme. They got two corners that are really good, and actually got three. They got good pass rush, really good pass rushers, and it’s a really good scheme.

On whether he saw the close underhand pass/fumble call:

I did on the scoreboard, yeah. I thought it was a fumble. I thought he underhand threw it and I thought it came loose from his thumb and that’s why he just pushed it  and the ball came out very unnaturally for a pass.

On drawing up plays without Samuel and McCaffrey:

It’s more about just getting all the guys ready for it. When you’ve got a gameplan that’s got enough stuff in it, but just moving some positions around. We just made too many mistakes.

    On the defense:

They’re the reason we had a chance. Getting that turnover at the end, with (Deommodore Lenoir), helping us win the turnover battle. They’re the reason that we were in it at the end, but I also think they can do better than that, giving up over 300 yards and not finishing there at the end. But they’re the side of the ball that gave us a chance today.

    On missing Dre Greenlaw:

You always miss your real good players. Dre’s one of the best players in this league. Oren (Burks) came in and did a real good job. Thought he had his best game last week, so I’ll see when I get on the plane, the film, but definitely don’t think that was the reason today.

    On Randy Gregory’s game:

I’ll see when I watch the whole tape but I definitely saw him make some plays. I think he got a sack in there, got a TFL, so it was nice to see him in some action.

    Nick Bosa

    On the loss:

I think it’s a learning experience for us. We had a good idea that it was going to be that type of game, just scrappy til the end. Just an unbelievable defense and we needed to match their intensity and we let up too much, so definitely a learning experience of how teams are going to attack us. Especially teams who know our sche because they run a similar scheme … I don’t think we deserved to win today.

    On the performance:

I think everybody on the defense could improve, including myself. It’s early. We haven’t lost in a long time in the regular season, so it hurts a little more.

    On his late sack:

It was a good play by Wilks but we needed to adjust earlier and I don’t think we did that as a defense.

    On the fumble/forward pass:

I didn’t get a great look at it. I did think in real time that it was a fumble, so a little surprise, but I didn’t see the replay.

    On injuries:

The NFL season is really long. You’re going to have to deal with injuries. It happens to every team at certain points.

    Fred Warner

    On the loss:

The main thing is that I think they earned it, and we didn’t this game, and that’s what it came down to. I would never put it on Moody on the end there … I said that win or loss, I felt like we needed this game. We knew what type of game it was going to be. In order for us to be the team that we want to be moving forward, we need to get battle-tested. That’s exactly what today was.

    On Gipson’s hit:

I didn’t see it. I was either in the rush or covering the opposite direction.

    Trent Williams

    On offensive struggles:

We played one of the better defenses in the league. They did a good job of getting us behind the chains on early downs. Once you get behind against guys, the pass rush, they have a front, you’re playing into their hands.

    On his ankle injury:

It didn’t feel good at all. It’s football and I just tried to fight through it for my teammates. They got a Hall of Fame rusher over there in (Myles Garrett) and I wanted to get back out there so I could help my team.

    On Garrett:

He’s one of the best in the world, so we battled. It was tough. We got a lot of respect for each other. He’s everything I thought he was gonna be.

On whether the regular-season loss is a shock to the system:

I wouldn’t say shocked. We bombed out. We didn’t get it at the end. You know, honestly, we probably didn’t deserve to win the game, but it’s a good learning experience.

    On the pregame fight:

I don’t know what it was. They were already doing it when we came out, so I don’t know what was going on.

Obviously blocking Nick will get you ready to play anybody but I don’t think they’re that similar in playing styles.

    Brock Purdy

    On learning:

It’s the NFL. You get opportunities, you gotta take advantage of them. So there’s definitely some throws and opportunities I feel like that were there for me and I missed on. That makes you behind the sticks and then you have to get a third down, which is tough on the road here.

    On what broke down:

We started shooting ourselves in the foot with just little things — false starts and the operation of everything not being clean. Getting lined up and being ready to play. Those delay of games are on me, so there’s just the little things we got to clean up.

    On the interceptions:

It was just a bad ball on my end. BA did a great job. He broke on whoever was guarding him and you had all the separation in the world to be able to lead him and convert the first down, so that was on me for sure.

    On his play:

At the end of the day, man, I just feel like I didn’t play to the standard that I need to.

    On the streak ending:

We were on that streak and all kind of stuff, but we don’t try to focus on the outcome. It’s more about being our best every play, every drive, every series and then it just falls into place. So for us, we feel like we failed our own expectations today in terms of playing our best.

On losing Samuel and McCaffrey to injury:

They’re playmakers — really good playmakers — and so it hurts, but at the same time, we got guys to be able to come in and make plays, so that’s on me, being able to help out guys like Ray Ray and JJ.

On what may have frustrated Shanahan:

The little things. The detail, the mindset coming in and being on point with our operation or plays, and for myself, there’s plays to be made. It wasn’t like there wasn’t any plays or anything open like that. There was guys open and so for me, I have to be better in that area. I could see just frustration probably from that. But we’re real, we’re all real with each other and we’re gonna get better from it.

    Jake Moody

    (from NBC Sports Bay Area)

    On his focus:

That’s all I’m focused on now is the next kick, whether it’s a PAT, field goal, whatever it may be. That’s all I’m focused on is the next kick.

On the snap and hold on his missed kick at the end:

It was good. Real good. I knew there wouldn’t be an issue with that. They’re a great snapper and holder. Never had an issue with them. I wasn’t worried in the slightest. Sure enough, it was a perfect snap, perfect hold. Just didn’t hit it the way I wanted to.

On the kicking crew and his teammates’ support:

We work really hard together. We’ve had a million kicks. It’s not like we’re not practicing it. Obviously, we trust each other and have each other’s backs. For a guy that just got here, to have all my teammates tell me to keep my head up and give me a high-five, a pat on the back, that was pretty cool. I really appreciate all that.

This improvement is the result of months of collaboration with operators to co-create unique solutions to peculiar challenges, mainly evacuation issues faced by individual operators, stakeholder management, political will, and support from government institutions.

This improvement is directly attributable to the reopening of operations along corridors with a history of security challenges, the restart of production from facilities that have been shut down for extended periods due to evacuation challenges, the completion of Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) of some assets, completion, and hook-up of infill wells, and critical well intervention projects.
