  • More firings – fewer hirings and quits – Paradise Post

“Numerology” tries to find reality within various measurements of economic and real estate trends.

Buzz: California’s employment picture has cooled to either (1) a new normal or (2) a worrisome slowdown.

Source: My trusty spreadsheet crafted the “HQF” index to loosely measure statewide tensions in the workplace. The math, taken from some novel federal job statistics, compares California hiring (an upbeat signal) with statewide quits and firings (usual signals of distress).

Fuzzy math: What’s up with workplace revolts across California this year – from tussles over work-from-home policies to numerous disagreements putting workers on picket lines?

    Topline

California had an HQF rating of 112 in the year’s first seven months – that’s 112 hires for every 100 quits and firings.

What does that mean? Well, it’s sort of a “it-could-be-worse” message. Why? Consider the index’s history.

Since 2001, California has averaged 113 hires for every 100 quits and firings through July. So this year’s is a tad slow.

Now it’s not the worst. That HQF honor goes to mid-Great Recession 2009 which scored a 101. Nor was it the best such as 2021’s rebound from pandemic lockdowns, which scored 124.

    • MORTGAGE NEWS: What’s up with rates? Who’s lending? CLICK HERE!

Taking the shorter-term view, 2023’s HQF is an upgrade from last year’s 108. And it tops the 109 average of pre-pandemic 2018-19.

To the HQF, at least, the California job market isn’t so bad.

    Details

Let’s see what’s moving the HQF in 2023.

    1. Hiring pace cools. Staff additions show confidence in the business climate. And this kind of optimism is down. California bosses hired 4.1 million in 2023, but that’s off 10% in a year. However, it’s 2% above the 2018-19 pace.

    • EXODUS SLOWDOWN?: California exits drop 3%, arrivals rose 10%. READ HERE!

    2. Quits slow. The “bye, boss” trend is cooling but remains a concern. The 2.4 million Californians who voluntarily left a job this year is off 22% in a year. But quits remain 2% above the 2018-19 norm.

    3. Firings are up. Telling workers they’re no longer needed is the most public signal of worry. And the 1.1 million Californians who were involuntarily let go is up 5% in a year. And it’s 15% above pre-pandemic 2018-19.

    Bottom line

Rising workplace tensions could be more than just awkward adjustments between boss and employee as the economy adjusts to post-pandemic normalcy.

Fewer job opportunities – less hiring and more firing – can make folks think twice about quitting. But it hasn’t stopped folks from walking off the job en masse.

More traditional job-market yardsticks also show a changing boss-worker dynamic.

Yes, a record number of Californians are employed. But the growth of staffing suggests bosses are a wee bit antsy.

The 2.4% increase in total workers statewide this year is historically strong. But it’s off from 2022’s torrid 6.9% job creation. Curiously, this year’s increase tops the 1.8% job growth of 2018-19 – supposedly the good ol’ days.

Peeking at unemployment, the average 900,000 California officially out of work per month this year is up 7% in a year and 9% above 2018-19. Job security seems to be slipping.

In some ways, though, this year’s workplace chill should be little surprise. It’s exactly what the Federal Reserve is seeking in its quest to fix an overheated US economy.

  • BREAKING: Appeal Court Sacks APC Senator Abbo, Declares Yohanna Winner Of Adamawa North

    ELISHA-ABBO

The appeal court has declared Rev Amos Yohanna of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the 2023 senatorial candidate representing the Adamawa north senatorial zone.

Recall Rev. Amos Kumai Yohanna in a petition filed at the tribunal sitting in Yola, challenged the election of Senator Abbo as the winner of the election.

In his petition marked, EPT/AD/SEN/02/2023, the Kumai had alleged that the election of Abbo was invalid.

Giving reasons he said Abbo’s winning was characterised by corrupt practices and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, adding that Abbo was not duly elected by the majority of lawful votes cast during the election.

He alleged that there were cases of over voting at various polling units, false entries, alteration and cancellation of votes at several polling units among others.

He said some of the cancellations were not signed by the presiding officers of the polling units, and based on these he prayed the tribunal to set aside the election of Senator Abbo.

Meanwhile, on his part, Sen Abbo on 19th June, 2023 filed a final written address through his counsel, Sam. Ologunorisha (SAN) where he urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition, tagging it as lacking in merit.

However, in a new twist of events on Monday, the Appeal Court granted the prayers of Rev Yohanna, declaring him winner of the senatorial election.

Reacting to this in a post on Facebook, Senator Abbo said he is going to address the press shortly.

He said, “The Appeal Court in Abuja just voided my election. The gang up have temporarily worked. I will soon address the press.”

  • Warriors rookie Brandin Podziemski dazzles in first start vs. Kings

SACRAMENTO — To shoot, or not to shoot? That was the question for Brandin Podziemski on Sunday night.

There he was, open in the corner, and instead of pulling up for a 3-point attempt, Podziemski started to dribble. He dribbled forward past Sacramento Kings defender Trey Lyles, turned inside, drew three defenders, pump-faked, then ducked underneath and went to the hoop for an easy underhand bucket.

It looked like a dazzling play by the Warriors rookie, who made his first start for the Warriors at point guard while Steph Curry and Chris Paul were resting during their 121-115 preseason win over the Kings on Sunday night.

But soon after making the sensational play, Podziemski heard an earful from his coaches: wrong decision.

“Honestly the coaches yelled at me because I didn’t shoot the corner 3,” he said. “They stress that a lot to me, ‘Catch and shoot, catch and shoot.’

“I’ve never been in a situation throughout my basketball career when I’ve been able to be just open and shoot the ball. I’ve always been guarded. A lot of my 3s have always come off the dribble. It’s new for me, catching and shooting, just letting it fly. I don’t realize I’m open. I kind of drive into a couple defenders.”

The score looked pretty: “a pump fake, step through, footwork I usually work on,” he said.

It was also a learning experience. For a player who can contribute in every part of the game, sometimes he just needs to take the shot.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he thought Podziemski handled his first start at point guard well and played with poise, something Kerr has said repeatedly since the Warriors made the Santa Clara University product the No. 19 overall pick in the NBA Draft in June.

And while Podziemski is still finding his way in the Warriors’ offense, he’s already made one thing clear about his game: He won’t be out-worked. The 20-year-old almost never stops moving on the floor.

“I really like his pace,” said Warriors guard Moses Moody. “He’s been able to put pressure on the rim, attack and create. Not get overwhelmed when he gets in there. Just staying composed. I’m impressed with it.”

Early in the first quarter against the Kings on Sunday, Podziemski crashed the boards to win a defensive rebound that led directly to a Klay Thompson bucket. The very next defensive possession, he did it again, this time fighting off the 7-foot-1 Domantas Sabonis on a rebound to induce a turnover.

When the 6-foot-5 Poziemski finally came out of the game for his first break, he had already dished out three assists and hauled in three rebounds in less than six minutes.

Still, there was a sense that something was missing as he ran the point: scoring ability. He often failed to create enough separation to give himself clean looks — or didn’t take the shot when he had one — and he appeared more interested in finding open teammates than taking chances himself.

When he did shoot, he struggled, going 1-for-5 from the field and 0-for-1 from 3-point range. He also went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line to go with six rebounds and four assists.

Asked how it felt to start the game in place of Curry and Paul, Podziemski said, “It felt the same as coming off the bench.”

He didn’t think he played as well Sunday as he did during his first two preseason games, noting that the flow was different and he was adjusting to the lineup changes.

Overall, the numbers look good: Through three preseason games, he has played 81 minutes and contributed 23 points, 17 rebounds, 18 assists and only three turnovers, a ratio that would rank him at the top of the NBA over a full season.

“I think Steve (Kerr) really made a point through training camp that (last season) we were ranked 30th in turnovers but first in pace,” Podziemski said. “I’m trying to find an even balance of how I can still push the ball and not turn the ball over.

  • I Will Appoint Billionaires As Local Govt Chairmen-Otti

    Alex-Otti

Governor Alex Otti Of Abia State has revealed he will appoint billionaires as local government chairmen to add value to governance in the state.

He added that the era where people take up government appointments for the purpose of enriching themselves was gone.

The Governor disclosed this when he spoke to some stakeholders in Abia State last week after the flag off of Port Harcourt Road.

The governor revealed that only merit would determine who gets what in his administration and confirmed he will use more billionaires and even Army Major-Generals as local government transition chairmen depending on the need of the areas.

“I will be announcing billionaires as local government chairmen. Gone are the days when local government chairmen will come and be sharing money. We don’t share money again.

“As I am developing the whole of Abia State, I need to have my army generals in different places of the local government.

“So, in your different local governments, you will be seeing different kinds of people”, he said.

Continuing, the governor also revealed that he had called billionaire businessman and politician, Chief David Onuoha Ọgba(Bourdex), to be mayor of Ohafia.

“I called Bourdex you know him? to be the mayor of Ohafia, the man will be there and I will sit down with him and discuss how to develop Ohafia.”

  • 49ers’ Brock Purdy has his first bad game in loss to Browns

We temporarily interrupt the Brock Purdy fairy tale with a dose of harsh reality, courtesy of the Cleveland Browns.

The 49ers’ second-year quarterback fell to earth with a 12-for-27, 125-yard performance that included a shovel pass touchdown to Christian McCaffrey, his first interception in 248 passes, and a skittery, off-rhythm performance that in no way resembled the previous 12 starts and victories in which he went wire to wire.

Purdy even had the ball slip out of his hand and fall to the turf on one pass attempt. He recovered his own fumble.

Coming off his best game with a 144.4 passer rating and four touchdown passes against Dallas, Purdy bottomed out with a 55.3 rating. He’d never before been below 87.4.

More amazing than the drop-off in performance was that it took so long to happen. Bad games happen to every quarterback who has ever played, including Joe Montana, Kurt Warner or any one of the number of legends to whom Purdy has been compared in recent weeks.

And even more amazing than that is despite playing so poorly, Purdy had the 49ers in position to win the game until Jake Moody pushed a 41-yard field goal attempt slightly to the right in the final seconds.

Think of the storyline that would have ensued if Moody had connected. Purdy would be canonized for putting aside all the ugliness and delivering a win. Not only that, but doing it inside of the final two minutes — something his critics and even defenders have correctly pointed out he has not yet done.

Taking over at the 25-yard line, Purdy misfired on his first two passes before Greg Newsome was called for pass interference and a first down. A 25-yard catch-and-run to Brandon Aiyuk and an 8-yard pass to Aiyuk preceded a 9-yard strike to Jauan Jennings on third-and-2. From there, the 49ers worked the ball to the middle of the field before Moody’s miss.

“B.A. did a great job of creating separation and making guys miss,” Purdy said. “There was a sense of urgency, we got up to the ball and ran some plays we were all comfortable with to get the ball to the playmakers.”

Outplayed by Cleveland quarterback P.J. Walker, a practice squad promotion, Purdy wasn’t any more animated after the loss than he was after any of the wins.

“There were definitely some throws and opportunities I felt were there for me and I missed on ’em,” Purdy said. “It made us behind the sticks and be on third down, which is tough on the road and something I’ve got to learn from.

“I’ve got to be real about it and we’ve got to look at ourselves in the mirror and see the flaws and get better from it, but it starts with me.”

There was a feeling among some that Purdy was being carried to success on the shoulders of his supporting cast. Whatever truth that exists in that theory also included the inverse against the Browns — Purdy didn’t get a lot of help from his friends and teammates.

“It wasn’t just Brock, it was everybody,” coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Purdy’s interception to Martin Emerson on the first possession of the third quarter came two plays after a leaping Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah nearly had one himself.

“It was a bad ball on my end,” Purdy said. “B.A. did a great job. he had all the separation in the world. That was on me for sure.”

If the 49ers are without McCaffrey (oblique), Deebo Samuel (shoulder) or left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) for any period of time, Purdy will be less of a quarterback, Shanahan will be less of a coach and the 49ers will be less of a team.

“But we’ve got guys to come in and make plays too,” Purdy said. “That’s on me, being able to help out guys like Ray-Ray (McCloud) and (Jennings) and Elijah (Mitchell).

“I’ve got to do a better job in the huddle, giving them expectations as to what’s to come. Even if Deebo and Christian aren’t able to go, we’ve got good players.”

In reality though, Purdy’s job will get harder and the criticism, which has mostly been along the lines of “How the hell is he doing this?” will instead become “See, we told you it was a mirage.”

Rather than blame Moody, Purdy supported him.

  • FG’s $400m Loan: Political Interests Behind Nigeria’s Worsening Debt Profile, Says Economist

    Bola-Tinubu-

Nigeria’s worsening debt profile is caused by political interests and corruption, an economic expert has said.

A political economist, Dr Chukwuma Okoli, stated this on Monday in Enugu while responding to questions pertaining to the federal government moves to obtain $400m loan from the World Bank.

Our correspondent reports that the Tinubu administration had approached the World Bank for a fresh loan of $400m for the conditional cash transfer to 15 million households as one of the measures to cushion the effects of petrol subsidy removal on Nigerians.

The loan will bring to $1.2bn the amount that the FG is borrowing from the World Bank for the cash transfer as it had earlier secured a loan of $800m for the same purpose.

President Tinubu disclosed the conditional cash transfer to 15 million households in his address during the country’s independence on October 1 as part of measures to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal on petrol, which has led to an astronomic rise in the cost of living.

The payment of N25,000 monthly to 15 million households for three months will be from October to December 2023, he said.

Okolie said, “Nigeria’s debt profile is becoming a burden. This is because the political interest overrides everything. There are also personal interests. According to the Debt Management Office (DMO), Nigeria’s total public debt rose to N87.38 trillion in the second quarter (Q2) of 2023, recording an increase of 75.29 percent.

“We should also note that states owe in Nigeria’s over N87.38trn debt. Ten percent of the sum is owed by our thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“Our debt servicing is scary. In the first quarter, about N1.3trn is used to service our debts. The nation’s oil revenue is about N1.trn. The opportunity cost is huge. Debt is a vicious circle – you borrow more to come out of the burden of already borrowed debts.”

Okolie said there is nothing wrong in borrowing, but Nigeria’s lack of transparency does not make borrowing profitable for the country.

He added, “The bane is lack of transparency and corruption. To make borrowing favourable, we should focus on where such funds could yield profits. These borrowings are factored in the budgets, and the budgets always balance.

“The truth is that Nigeria defies all social science theories because of corruption. This is the main reason why funds borrowed are not properly utilised. Projects they were meant to execute are not seen, and such funds have been expended. Nigeria has one of the highest project execution costs in the world, and the single cause is corruption.”

Okoli also spoke on the recommendation of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank that taxes be imposed on Nigerians to sustain the economy.

He said, “Both bodies are created to sustain the global capitalist system. Their suggestions are anchored on liberal economy, which cannot help Nigeria. They encourage us to impose more taxes on the citizenry. IMF’s interests do not align with Nigeria’s model. Taxing the poor masses creates more poverty. IMF gives blind eye to our plight.”

  • SF Giants reportedly interview Nakken for vacant manager job

Pioneering San Francisco Giants coach Alyssa Nakken became the first woman in MLB history to interview for a managerial job after meeting with the team last week, multiple outlets reported Sunday.

Nakken, 33, is the third member of the Giants’ current coaching staff  – joining bench coach Kai Correa and third base coach Mark Hallberg — to sit down with the team to discuss replacing Gabe Kapler, who was fired on the final weekend of a second straight non-playoff season.

The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly first reported Nakken had been interviewed by the Giants.

Meanwhile, popular former A’s and Giants catcher Stephen Vogt is reportedly in line to be interviewed by San Francisco, according to The Chronicle. There are expected to be many other outside candidates to take over for Kapler, who was let go after four seasons and one year remaining on his contract.

Nakken, who finished her fourth season as a Giants coach, made MLB history in 2020 when she joined Kapler’s big league staff, becoming the first female coach ever in the majors.

Three years ago, Rachel Balkovec became the first female manager ever of a major league-affiliated team when she became the team leader for the New York Yankees’ Low-A affiliate in Tampa.

Nakken, once a decorated softball star at Sacramento State, where she was a three-time all-conference player, has been part of the Giants organization since 2014. She started out as a baseball operations intern with the Giants.

No matter how the interview process plays out, this will be a special offseason for Nakken, who is due to give birth to her first child on Feb. 9.

Farhan Zaidi, the Giants president of baseball operations, has indicated he’d like to hire a new manager by the first week of November. The Giants are seeking a new voice for a squad that finished in fourth place in the National League West with a disappointing 79-83 record.

  • EFCC Arraigns ‘Mama Boko Haram’, 2 Others For N150m Fraud

    EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned Aisha Alkali Wakil popularly called ‘Mama Boko Haram’ and accomplices on two-count charges bordering on conspiracy and cheating to the tune of N150,000,000.00.

Mama Boko Haram was arraigned alongside two others, Tahiru Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyode, before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri.

According to the EFCC, the trio committed the offence when they served as officers of Complete Care and Aid Foundation, a nongovernmental organisation based in Maiduguri.

EFCC noted that in 2018, the suspects used their positions and lured one Alhaji Bulama Bakki, CEO of Bakki Commodity Investment Company Limited and Ngumati Investment Company Limited under the guise of executing a contract.

They made him supply 5000 bags of high quality white beans of 50kg each at the rate of N23,000 each.

They also asked him to supply seven unit mobile ultra-scanning Machines solar energy (2018 brand) at the rate of N5, 000,000.00 totaling N150,000,000.00.

The products were supplied by the victim but the suspects refused to pay him, which eventually led to their arraignment.

Count two of the charges reads: “That you Aisha Alkali Wakil, Tahiru Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyode, while being the Chief Executive Officer, Programme Manager and Country Director respectively of Complete Care and Aid Foundation, (a Non-Governmental Organisation) and Saidu Mukhtar (at large) sometimes in August, 2018 in Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly induced one Alhaji Bulama Bakki CEO Bakki Commodity Investment Company Limited and Ngumati Investment Company Limited under the guise of executing a contract for the supply of 5000 bags of high quality white beans of 50kg each at the rate of N23,000 (Twenty Three Thousand Naira) only each and seven unit mobile ultra-scanning Machines solar energy (2018 brand) at the rate of N5, 000,000.00 (Five Million Naira) only totaling N 150,000,000.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Million Naira only) which he did and you refused to pay him and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320(a) of the Borno State Penal Code Law Cap 102 and punishable under section 322 of the same Law.”

The defendants pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges read to them, and counsels for the prosecution, A.I Arogha and S.O Saka prayed the court for a trial date.

Justice Fadawu thereafter adjourned the matter and ordered for the remand of the defendants at a Correctional Centre.
