  • Fact Check: Hamas has not surrendered to Israel, despite video’s claim

As Israel prepares for a ground incursion into Gaza more than a week after an Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel by Hamas militants, some social media users are falsely claiming that the war is already over.

A caption and headline on an Oct. 15 Facebook video read, “Cries of Victory in Israel — Gaza Now Belongs to Israel! Hamas Surrenders Desperately!”

The Facebook post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The Facebook account that shared the video was created in January and has shared multiple misleading headlines about the Israel-Hamas war, such as the False Oct. 16 statement that Egypt had joined the war against Israel.

This video about Hamas surrendering originated on a YouTube channel called DCM Global, which shared a video Oct. 15 with the same headline.

“The Israeli army has entered Gaza as of now,” a narrator in the video said. “The Hamas militia was forced to surrender to the Israeli army by waving their white flags in their hands.”

    (Facebook screenshot)

The video shows soldiers with their arms up and holding white flags. They aren’t Hamas militants, however. Using a reverse image search, we found the footage posted on YouTube Nov. 25, 2022. That video’s caption said the footage showed Russian soldiers surrendering to Ukrainian soldiers, although we couldn’t authenticate that video.

But there are no credible reports that Hamas had surrendered to Israel by the time this Facebook video was shared.

Israel has been bombarding Gaza with airstrikes, but as of Oct. 16, it had yet to launch an expected ground invasion three days after ordering more than a million people to evacuate Gaza City, the most populous city in the Palestinian territories.

Israel in 2014 launched a ground invasion into Gaza in a battle that lasted more than a month before a truce that still left Hamas in control. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Oct. 15 to “demolish Hamas” in response to the terrorist attacks.

The claim that Hamas had surrendered to Israel by Oct. 15 is False.

  • Four teens injured in Corning stolen car chase, two arrested – Paradise Post

CORNING —  A pair of teenagers were arrested Saturday after a high-speed chase resulted in property damage and the endangering of lives.

Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop at Third St and Marin St. when a driver failed to yield, according to a press release issued Sunday by CPD. The vehicle led officers on a high-speed chase throughout the city.

Speeds reached up to 100 mph, the release said. The vehicle continued southbound on Toomes Ave, colliding with a eucalyptus tree at the T-intersection of Toomes and Loleta avenues. Four occupants were detained. All four occupants had significant injuries. One juvenile was located with his head on the rear passenger floorboard, unconscious.

The unconscious juvenile was airlifted to Enole Hospital and treated. Another passenger who allegedly stole the vehicle was transported via ambulance to Saint Elizabeth Hospital for his injuries. The driver and a passenger were transported to Enloe for their injuries. The 14-year-old driver allegedly had a preliminary blood alcohol of .162 percent.

Through investigation, it was later determined the 15-year-old juvenile stole the vehicle. Charges included child endangerment, DUI with injuries, evading law enforcement and stealing a vehicle.

The vehicle, valued at $4,000, was wrecked.

  • Osun Orders Virtual Audit Of Retirees After 3 Pensioners Slumped

Three pensioners on Monday slumped during the ongoing staff audit exercise ordered by the Osun State government.

The pensioners had converged at the venue of the exercise at Center for Black Culture, Osogbo, from across the state.

Due to the arduous condition they were subjected to during the exercise, the pensioners, majority who are aged and ill, lamented bitterly.

The pensioner, who appeared frail and fragile at the venue of the exercise, stayed under the sun for hours in order to be attended to.

Some of the pensioners were observed sitting on bare floors while others were lying down waiting for their turn for documentation.

During the exercise, three pensioners slumped and were resuscitated by officials of the Osun State Ambulance Service.

Following the incident, the exercise was stopped abruptly as the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, arrived at the scene to sympathize with the retirees and assured them of better treatment during the exercise.

The Secretary of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Osun branch, Comrade Dele Aina, said he was informed of the collapse and that he was working around the situation.

Meanwhile, the Head of Operations for Osun Ambulance Service, Elizabeth Arowosafe, denied reports of the collapse.

He claimed that pensioners numbering about 20 suffered exhaustion and they were treated immediately.

Speaking on the development, the Osun State Government through the Commissioners for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, directed that all bedridden and challenged pensioners will henceforth have their audit exercise conducted through telephone, and as such, will no longer be required to be physically present at the venue of the screening exercise.

“Pensioners outside the state at the moment no longer need to travel down to Osun State as they will also be having their screening through the telephone. Additionally, pensioners in the diaspora will also be screened only through video calls.

“In line with the above, the Pension Board is expected to make available all the particulars, especially pictures of pensioners to the Consultant, for ease of identification during the video call screenings. The above directives take immediate effect,” Alimi stated.

  • Fact Check: No, Egypt hasn’t started a war with Israel

A week after Israel declared war on Hamas in response to the militant group’s attack, social media posts are claiming Egypt has joined the conflict, too,

An Oct. 16 Facebook video’s title and caption claimed, “Egypt is now at war with Israel! Tanks are entering Gaza! Arab countries vow revenge.”

The nearly nine-minute video said the Egyptian government has deployed troops, armored vehicles and tanks to the Gaza border and armed Egyptians have “infiltrated” Israel.

    (Screengrab from Facebook)

Another Facebook video, shared Oct. 14 from the same account, made a similar claim about Egypt “joining the Israeli war.”

These posts were flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

We found no credible news reports or government declarations that Egypt is now at war with Israel. The videos provided no evidence to support this claim.

In reality, what’s waiting at the Gaza-Egypt border are thousands of pounds of humanitarian aid supplies. More than 100 trucks carrying food, water, fuel and medical supplies have been waiting days to cross safely into Gaza.

Days after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, Israel shut down two of three Gaza border crossings, leaving Rafah at Gaza’s southern border with Egypt as the only access point for humanitarian aid, the BBC reported.

But the Egyptian government said Israeli airstrikes have prevented aid from reaching Gaza, The Washington Post reported.

The Post also reported that the United States has been talking with the United Nations, Egypt and Israel about allowing foreign aid in and getting U.S. citizens out of Gaza but no agreement has been reached.

The World Health Organization and other humanitarian groups have warned that the situation in Gaza is dire and these supplies are needed immediately.

Although Egypt has been involved in these efforts to get humanitarian aid to Gaza, there is no evidence the country is at war with Israel. We rate this claim False.

  • Bob Myers explains why he left Warriors for ESPN gig

Bob Myers made his debut as an ESPN analyst on Sunday night and is already confronting questions about his career beyond television.

Myers stepped down as Warriors general manager in May with his contract expiring and, shortly after, announced he would be part of the rotation of commentators on ‘NBA Countdown’ and call some games during the season. There was some speculation that his foray into TV was just a pitstop between front office gigs, but Myers said he turned down opportunities during a press conference on Monday afternoon.

“I think my answer to that would be not right now,” Myers said, asked if wanted to head up another team after ESPN. “I can’t say. The only conviction that I have is that I was done with what that job required. And what that will mean in two years, three years, I just honestly don’t know.

“I guess I’ve got to be OK not knowing. I don’t really need to know now. It might be harder as things are presented to me to make those decisions. I’ve had some things presented and pretty easily said, ‘No, thank you. I’m flattered but no thank you.’ “

The 48-year-old said his desires to spend more time with his family and take a breather from the demands of managing a high-powered front office drove his decision to leave Golden State amid a championship contention window.

“The Warriors thing, I’ve used this example before, it was like trying to hold on to the tail of a dragon,” he said. “It was ton of fun, but a ton of work, and I admire any executive that can kind of keep it going for 20 years. I did 12, and I just felt like for me, I had to stop.”

While Myers is leaning into his new TV gig, he didn’t dismiss the idea that he could eventually take a job in a different front office.

Myers will certainly be tapped for his Warriors’ expertise from his fellow panel analysts. Production warned him panelists would ask about Klay Thompson’s contract extension situation, he said, adding that it was a little strange to talk publicly about his former team.

  • Akpabio Behind My Sack, Planning To Remove Orji Kalu, 4 Others Next – Elisha Abbo Alleges

    ELISHA-ABBO

Adamawa Senator, Elisha Abbo has fingered the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio of being behind his removal by the Court of Appeal.

Speaking after the court nullified his election into the Senate on Monday at his Abuja home, the controversial senator said Akpabio’s next move is to remove the former Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Kalu and four others.

He did not mention the other four despite repeated probing.

Recall the court on Monday nullified the decision of the lower court which affirmed his election in a unanimous decision.

The court held that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the election, Amos Yohanna was the winner.

Abbo described the upper court decision as a coup yet alleging that, “I have it from a reliable source that myself and four other senators within the fold of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will be removed from the Senate through rulings from the courts, all because of working against the emergence of Akpabio as President of the 10th Senate.

“I won’t mention the names of all the four other ones targeted but the next in line is Senator Orji Uzor Kalu,” he said.

He said he won the election with over 11,000 votes.

“The court judgement is strange and the judiciary needs to please remain the last hope of the common man,” Abbo stated.

He appealed to his supporters to remain calm even as he vowed to recontest in 2027.

Akpabio is yet to react to the allegation as efforts to reach him were unsuccessful.

Abbo, like Orji Kalu, was one of the few senators in the APC, who did not support Akpabio’s bid for the position of the Senate president in June.

  • 49ers await tests; Deebo Samuel day-to-day

The 49ers were awaiting word on medical testing Monday to determine the status of running back Christian McCaffrey, who suffered an injury to his rib area in a 19-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

“He’s in MRI’s right now so we’re still waiting on the imaging,” coach Kyle Shanahan said in a conference call with local writers.

The good news is that left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder) received “day to day” designations, meaning they may miss a practice or two but have a decent chance of facing the Minnesota Vikings.

The 49ers (5-1) have an additional day to rest up, with a road assignment against the Vikings (2-4) awaiting on Monday Night Football.

Samuel was the first to depart, playing just nine snaps and rushing two times for 11 yards. He was on the bench before the end of the first quarter and ruled out at halftime, watching the rest of the game from the sidelines.

On the 49ers’ first snap on their opening 84-yard touchdown drive, Samuel ran for eight yards around right end. He carried a second time on the 49ers’ second possession for three yards. He was targeted by quarterback Brock Purdy just once on an incomplete pass.

With Samuel out, Ray-Ray McCloud played a season-high 44 snaps on offense, the most he’s played since having 38 against the New York Giants when Brandon Aiyuk was out with a shoulder injury. He was targeted just twice, catching one pass for four yards.

Jauan Jennings also had a season high with 33 snaps, catching two passes in four targets for 26 yards.

McCaffrey, who didn’t miss a game last season with either Carolina or the 49ers and was a workhorse for the first five games of 2023, rushed 11 times for 43 yards and caught three passes of nine net yards, including a 13-yard touchdown on a shovel pass from Purdy to open the game.

It was the 15th consecutive game that McCaffrey scored a touchdown. The versatile running back came on pace for 404 touches rushing and receiving, which would eclipse by one the 403 he had in 2019 when he became the NFL’s third back to rush for 1,000 yards and catch passes for 1,000 yards along with Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk.

Television cameras caught McCaffrey attempting to stretch his torso while sitting on a bench in the third quarter. He returned to the game and had a 6-yard run which was wiped out by a penalty. He left the game and was headed to the locker room by the end of the quarter.

In all, McCaffrey played 36 snaps. In his absence at running back, Jordan  Mason played 15 snaps and had five rushes for 27 yards and a 7-yard touchdown run set up by Deommodore Lenoir’s interception and 28-yard return early in the fourth quarter.

It was Mitchell’s first game back after missing the Arizona and Dallas games because of an injury sustained in practice.

McCaffrey leads the 49ers with 553 yards on 100 carries, followed by Mason (21 for 107 and two touchdowns), Samuel (18 for 95) and Mitchell (18 for 49). Ty Davis-Price has played in just one game, carrying six times for 21 yards late in a blowout win over Dallas.

In the 49ers’ last two games, Dallas and Cleveland both keyed on McCaffrey and were successful in slowing him down as he gained 94 yards on 30 carries.

Williams injured his right ankle around the same time as Samuel departed, with Jaylon Moore coming in for two snaps. Williams returned to the game and finished it but left in an orthopedic walking boot.

    THIRD AND FOREVER

Offensive players were lamenting being “behind the sticks” too much of the evening, and the 49ers’ 3-for-12 performance on third down went a long way toward explaining Purdy’s struggles.

Instead of operating on third-and-medium or short, seven times the 49ers had a third-and-10 or worse, including a third-and-23, a third-and-13, a third-and-15 and a third-and-19. Overall, their average third-down play required 11 yards to get a first down.

The only conversions were a 2-yard run by Purdy on third-and-2, an 8-yard run by Ray-Ray McCloud on third-and-8 and a 9-yard completion to Jauan Jennings on third-and-2.

  • These are the cities where hotel rates are rising fastest – Paradise Post

Lebawit Lily Girma | (TNS) Bloomberg News

Hotel room rates in major cities from Boston to Mumbai are expected to jump by double digits, even after predictions that prices were finally hitting a ceiling, according to a new report.

Buenos Aires takes this year’s crown, with rates that are set to jump by 17% year over year, according to the Hotel Monitor 2024 report from American Express Global Business Travel. It examines how hotel prices are fluctuating in more than 80 cities around the world, with forecasts based on criteria such as currently listed prices, broader macroeconomic trends, hotel pipelines and historic data.

Hotel prices reflect much more than a destination’s current popularity with travelers. In the Argentina capital, rates are largely being driven by the country’s ongoing hyperinflation crisis, which in September reached its worst levels since 1991. (Notably, the Amex study calculates rate hikes in the local currency.) In other words, the rising prices in Buenos Aires are still likely to translate to deep savings for most anyone visiting from abroad.

Second-place Mumbai has a more straightforward narrative. Its hotels are expected to rise in cost by 15% year over year; that’s undoubtedly a product of fast-growing domestic wealth and a long-delayed post-pandemic travel recovery. And given both of those factors apply country-wide, it’s no surprise that India claims three cities in the report’s top 10 list: Chennai and Delhi ranked fourth and seventh, respectively.

Rounding out the top 10 are cities where tourism has been booming. Whereas Cairo has benefited from a largely leisure-driven audience, Chicago, Paris and Boston rank in the top 10 thanks to gains in business travel. The region with the most moderate rate increases is Australasia, where no single city is seeing projected increases greater than 6.8%.

Prices are expected to rise at least somewhat in all 80 cities examined in the report.

David Reimer, executive vice president of global clients at Amex GBT, sees several macro trends continuing to influence hotel pricing at a global level. Staffing shortages continue to be a problem in the hospitality industry, forcing some hotels to limit inventory — meaning they’re leaving rooms deliberately unsold — as a coping mechanism. That spreads soaring operating costs among fewer customers.

Then there’s the issue of supply — the number of hotel rooms in any market — not keeping up with the demand.

“Where there is lagging supply but demand remains high, rates will also rise,” Reimer says. The inverse can also be true. Rates are predicted to rise only moderately in cities such as Riyadh and New York City, which will add a large number of new hotel rooms in the coming year. The report predicts that prices in those markets will be up 4.6% and 6.8%, respectively. (The report caveats that recent legislation curtailing short-term rentals in New York City may drive prices up in ways that are not reflected by Amex GBT’s data models.)

Boston, on the other hand, has few new hotels in the works — which will be problematic for consumers as the city continues to show strong growth as a business travel hub, in addition to its perennial leisure and university-related travel demand. That explains the city’s sharp 11.5% projected spike.

“Although there’s been a lot of talk with respect to the continuation of remote work, we’re seeing some kinds of business travel actually surpassing 2019 levels,” Reimer says. Specifically, it’s people traveling for trade shows or small internal meetings of 20 people or fewer, he says. At some companies, he adds, trips related to those more-intimate corporate functions have surpassed 2019 levels by as much as 25%. “We think that that will continue to be our fastest growing segment,” Reimer says.

Of course, even with the projected hotel rate increases, some of these cities still offer deep value. A room at an over-the-top hotel in Buenos Aires during peak season, for example, can cost just $600 a night; a 17.5% increase would add just a little over $100. Compare that to $2,000 a night in Paris during high season — the current going rate at a palace hotel — and the smaller-seeming 11% increase, valued at around $200, adds twice as much sting in absolute terms.

Here are the top 10 cities around the world where hotel prices are set to soar most dramatically — along with how much more you can expect to pay in local currency, compared to last year.

    10. Jakarta, Indonesia: 10.9%

    9. Boston, US: 11.3%

    8. Paris, France: 11%

    7. Delhi, India: 12%

    6. Chicago, US: 12.6%

    5. Bogotá, Colombia: 14.1%

    4. Chennai, India: 14.6

    3. Cairo, Egypt: 14.6%

    2. Mumbai, India: 15%

    1. Buenos Aires, Argentina: 17.5%
