  • Imo: Group Asks Supreme Court To Determine 3-Year-Old Appeals Seeking Uzodinma’s Removal Before Nov 11 Guber

    Hope-Uzodinma-Imo-State-Governor

A public interest group known as Association for Public Policy Analysis has urged the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, to hear and determine all pending 2019 Imo State governorship election litigations before the November 11 gubernatorial poll.

Recall that the Supreme Court had fixed October 31, 2023 to hear two separate appeals filed in 2020, seeking to disqualify the All Progressives Congress (APC) from contesting in the 2019 Imo governorship election as well as remove Governor Hope Uzodimma from office.

The appeals are a fall out of two Supreme Court judgments delivered late 2019 and early 2020 regarding the Imo 2019 election.

The apex court had disqualified Ugwumba Uche Nwosu from contesting the 2019 guber poll, observing he held double nomination of the All Progressives Congress and Action Alliance (AA).

In another judgment in 2020, the apex court sacked Emeka Ihedioha of the People’s Democratic Party and declared APC’s Hope Uzodimma winner of the 2019 governorship election.

In another application, the PDP and Action People’s Party (APP) asked the apex court (in 2019) to interpret the effect of the judgment sacking Nwosu who held double nomination of APC and AA as well as enforce the verdict against the current governor of the state.

The matter, filed since 2019, is slated for hearing October 31.

But the national president of the Association for Public Policy Analysis, Chief Comrade Princewill Okorie, in a media briefing on Saturday, raised the alarm about alleged plans to delay hearing of the case.

He pleaded with the chief Judge of the Supreme Court to jettison any pressure from any quarters that will truncate the hearing of the pending matters slated for 31st October 2023 or delay expeditious disposal of the case before the November 11th Governorship election in Imo State.

He said considering that Imo has been politically unstable and unsafe since 2020, the association on 10th October 2023, wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and appealed to him to see that the motion/case is heard and ruling is given expeditiously before the 2023 governorship election.

“It is surprising that the application/motions made by Umeadi are still pending in the Court as at 3rd October, 2023 without being heard.

“While it is gratifying to note that the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court granted our plea by fixing 31st October 2023 for hearing of the applications and motions, it is regrettable that information reaching us from our analysts in the judiciary is pointing to the fact that some judiciary staff at the Supreme Court have been induced to compromise by making frantic effort to shift the hearing notice date which has already been served on parties in the case to December 2023.

“This is without the notice of Chief Justice of the Federation who by his action after receiving our letter approved date for hearing of the application/motion,” Okorie said.

Okorie alleged that certain public servants in the judiciary, politicians and traditional rulers are trying to delay hearing and determination of the case for selfish and unpatriotic reasons.

He added, “Putting the 2019 Governorship election judicial struggle to rest before the next election will not only restore the confidence of the Imo people in the judiciary but promote justice and fair play as well as give parties involved in the matter opportunity to move on with their lives.

“Finally, it is important to remind the Chief Justice of the Federation that shifting the date of these applications/motions that have stayed at the Supreme Court for over three years will present the Supreme Court as the institution that is not consistent with her decisions on policies, circumventing the will of justice, propelling political instability in Imo State and lacking in integrity.

“This image and perception will be very wrong in the eyes of the international community who are relying on Nigeria to champion effort towards sustainability of credible democracy in Africa.”

  • 49ers’ McCaffrey practicing, Williams, Samuel are not

SANTA CLARA — Christian McCaffrey is the most likely of three prominent injured 49ers to play Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

McCaffrey was on the field practicing with his teammates Saturday during the media window, while left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder) were not present as the 49ers began team drills.

Coach Kyle Shanahan will provide a official injury update following practice before the 49ers (5-1) depart for Minnesota to face the Vikings (2-4).

Regarding Williams and Samuel, It’s unusual but not unprecedented for players to miss practice all week and then play in a game.

A Monday night game gives players an extra day to heal up, which 49ers general manager John Lynch said is a bigger deal than it may seem.

“It’s a good thing we had the extra day of preparation,” Lynch said Friday during his weekly appearance on KNBR. “To me, as a player, it was always a day and a half because you don’t play until Monday night. That sounds like a little bit, but it’s a lot, especially when you’re coming off a game like that.”

McCaffrey, who leads the NFL with 553 yards rushing and is second to Miami’s Tyreek Hill (823) in yards from scrimmage with 730, hasn’t been sideline since missing the last five games of the 2021 season with the Carolina Panthers with an ankle injury.

He has scored a touchdown in 16 straight games (including playoffs) for the 49ers and has played in the his last 26 games (six with Carolina and then 20 including playoffs with the 49ers after being acquired by trade on Oct. 20, 2022.

The 49ers have Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason at the ready if McCaffrey is unable to play.

Samuel has 20 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown this season plus 19 rushes for 95 yards rushing and another touchdown in six games. He was injured by a blow to the shoulder on his first carry in the Cleveland loss. He missed four games last season with hamstring and ankle issues and had played in his last 10 games including the postseason after sitting out Weeks 14, 15 and 16 with the ankle sprain.

If Samuel doesn’t play, it means  more opportunities for Ray-Ray McCloud, Jauan Jennings and Ronnie Bell opposite starter Brandon Aiyuk. The 49ers could also call up a receiver from the practice squad Saturday.

  • ‘One Per Cent Of My Pain Is Gone’ – Mother Of Murdered Model Finally Speaks

…Reveals How Killaboi Was Arrested In Sierra Leone

Cordelia Okonye, the mother of the slain Augusta, a model allegedly killed and left to rot, has finally spoken, saying that one per cent of her pain is gone.

Okonye’a reactions followed the arrest of her late daughter’s boyfriend and Nigerian socialite, Nnanyereugo Benjamin Best, also known as Killaboi, in Sierra Leone.

This is her first public appearance and reaction since the death of Augusta on July 13, 2023, allegedly murdered by her boyfriend in his apartment.

Killaboi made the headlines in July when he took to social media to confess to murdering Augusta. He would later apologise and threaten to take his life.

Three months later, the Lagos police declared the suspect wanted with a detailed description of him to expedite his arrest.

In an emotional Facebook post on Saturday, the mother revealed how Killaboi was finally nabbed in Sierra Leone after he had changed his entire identity with fake names.

The mother further noted that she had pleaded with her daughter’s alleged killer to turn himself in, but he ignored her.

Okonye said that his failure to comply, having confessed to her that killing her daughter was a mistake, self-defence, she decided to send his passport photograph to all her relatives.

She said, “He blocked me after alleging I pimped my daughter out to men, which I never did.

“So what I did, I sent his passport photographs to all my relatives, friends, and family across the globe and told them he has a tattoo that identifies him.

“So along the line, my cousin in Sierra Leone on the first hinted to me that ‘I saw somebody like him. Immediately, my son and a cousin went to Sierra Leone.

“A day before my son and cousin got to Sierra Leone, they declared Killaboi wanted. He was already hiding in the country.

“The commissioner of police was contacted. Killaboi killed my daughter and left her corpse to rot before taking her phone.

“Best killed my daughter on the 13th of July and got a Sierra Leonean passport on the 28th of July. He was eventually arrested yesterday (Thursday).”

“One per cent of the pain is gone this morning that Benjamin is caught.”

  • Fact Check: Is Gov. Jim Justice right that West Virginia had its biggest tourism year in 2022?

Did West Virginia have its best tourism year ever in 2022, as Gov. Jim Justice said recently?

In a Sept. 12 post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Justice, a Republican, said, “2022 was the biggest tourism year ever in West Virginia, and the numbers are absolutely incredible.”

The governor’s office and the West Virginia Tourism Board’s press office did not respond to inquiries from PolitiFact West Virginia about Justice’s statement.

However, we looked through data archived on the board’s website, going back to 2000. We found that Justice is right by some metrics, but not others.

The clearest evidence supporting Justice’s statement is traveler spending in the state.

For 2022, the last year with full available data, travelers spent $4.9 billion in West Virginia. That’s up 2.1% from $4.8 billion in 2021, and slightly higher than the previous record, of a bit over $4.8 billion, set in 2012.

However, two other West Virginia Tourism Board metrics did not set records in 2022.

Tourism-supported jobs in the state fell 7.2% from 47,600 in 2021 to 44,400 in 2022. The 2022 level marked the lowest number since 2007.

And tax revenue from tourism fell 4.7%, from $791 million in 2021 to $754 million in 2022.

    Our ruling

Justice said, “2022 was the biggest tourism year ever in West Virginia.”

Spending by travelers to West Virginia set a record in 2022. However, tourism-supported jobs fell to its lowest level since 2007, and tax revenue from tourism fell slightly from 2021 levels.

We rate the statement Half True.

  • 49ers’ depth to be tested if McCaffrey, Deebo, Williams out vs Vikings

SANTA CLARA — Let’s go ahead and assume the worst. Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel are all out for the 49ers’ Monday night road game against the Minnesota Vikings.

That may not be the case. McCaffrey (oblique) was working diligently on the side Friday during practice and looking pretty nimble. Williams (shoulder) stayed hidden, while Samuel (shoulder) appeared to get some work on a side field.

The best guess is that coach Kyle Shanahan proclaims all three “questionable” as the 49ers (5-1) face the Vikings (2-4), and those designations becoming official Saturday.

The cold, hard fact about the NFL is it includes missing your best players from time to time, and the good news for the 49ers is none of the above injuries looks overly serious over the long haul.

If any or all of the big three can’t play, the 49ers will have had a week to prepare. That was part of the problem in the Cleveland loss, with Shanahan saying the ripple effect of plugging in new players who hadn’t prepared for the role had a part in the 49ers’ first loss of the season.

Quarterback Brock Purdy put some of the blame on his shoulders in the aftermath, saying he didn’t communicate well enough in the huddle when players started going down. He thinks things will be different if it happens again on Monday night.

“Those guys will be ready with the reps they’ve gotten going into the operational stuff,” Purdy said Thursday. “If Deebo and Christian are going, great for us. That would be awesome. But the other guys have been preparing great. We’ll be ready to roll with whatever comes.”

A look at who will need to step in if the stars don’t come out on Monday night:

    Jaylon Moore

A fifth-round draft pick out of Western Michigan in 2021, Moore has played just 22 snaps in relief of Williams this season. He started twice a year ago — a win against Carolina and a loss to Atlanta — with Williams out with a high ankle sprain.

“On any day, anything can happen,” Moore said Thursday. “I look at it as if I’m starting every week. I’m always ready and this is no different.”

When Williams was out a year ago, the 49ers first went to Colton McKivitz, who couldn’t make it through the Rams game before leaving with a knee injury. Moore took over from there. Unless the 49ers have been working Matt Pryor on the left side, Moore will be the man if Williams —  a potential future Hall of Famer — can’t go.

“Jaylon has had a lot of work,” run game coordinator/line coach Chris Foerster said. “Trent had his vet days during camp, doesn’t play in preseason and you do get to see if (Jaylon) has progressed. And we think he has. You don’t know until you play in the games exactly how far, but he’s improved.”

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings, middle, catches a pass in front of Cleveland Browns safety Rodney McLeod Jr. (26) during the first half of an NFL football game Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023, in Cleveland. (AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki)

    A.P. Photo

Jauan Jennings catches a pass for the 49ers in a 19-17 road loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Ray-Ray McCloud, Jauan Jennings, Ronnie Bell

It’s going to take a village to make up for Samuel and his versatile skill set. McCloud is the most likely to be used on jet sweeps and running plays and Jennings as a receiver.

McCloud has just four receptions for 27 yards and was targeted only twice in games against the New York Giants when Brandon Aiyuk was hurt (38 snaps) and Cleveland (44 snaps) after Samuel went down. He’s played 114 snaps overall.

Jennings has seven catches for 127 yards in five games, missing the Arizona game with a shin injury. He’s played 140 snaps with an average of 28 per game and Purdy could be looking his way before third down if Samuel is out.

Bell played just a single snap against Cleveland. Shanahan is notorious for not trusting young receivers but he may need to put the seventh-round pick into key situations against Minnesota.

    Elijah Mitchell, Jordan Mason

Mitchell is healthy for now after a knee injury which sidelined him. His production is undeniable when good to go — 270 carries for 1,291 yards, a 4.8 yards per carry average and four touchdowns in 18 career games. He’s missed 22 due to various injuries.

Against Cleveland, Mitchell took a back seat to Mason because he’d missed time, but could reprise his role as lead back if McCaffrey can’t go.

Mason, an undrafted free agent find last season, has 21 rushes for 117 yards including 10 carries for 69 yards against Dallas. He’s a heavy-legged runner who like Mitchell can get extra yards after contact.
