  • Fact Check: Video doesn’t show Palestinian crisis actors. It’s from a 2017 film project

A video shared on Instagram shows makeup artists creating realistic looking injuries on people, and social media users suggested these were “crisis actors” posing as victims in Palestine amid the war between Israel and Hamas.

“Hollywood? No it’s Pallywood and crisis actors are working overtime to fool the world. Don’t fall for it or fall for it. The choice is yours!” read the caption on the Oct. 23 post.

    (Screenshot from Instagram)

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The post misrepresents what is shown in the footage.

The footage is from a video originally uploaded to YouTube in March 2017 by Turkish public broadcaster TRT World. The report featured special effects makeup artist Mariam Salah on a film set in the Gaza Strip.

“There are not many film productions in the Gaza Strip,” says a description on the video. “But that didn’t stop makeup artist Mariam Salah from following her dream. She taught herself to make fake blood for Palestinian films, breaking into a business traditionally run by men.”

The footage shows Salah working on a project by international human rights organization Doctors of the World.

The video does not show Palestinian crisis actors during the current Israel-Hamas war. We rate that claim False.

  • Chris Paul and the Warriors will try to avoid being ‘too unselfish’

    SAN FRANCISCO — Thirty-two minutes.

That’s how long it took the fans at Chase Center to start chanting for the same man they once rooted so deeply against.

“C-P-THREE,” they screamed after Chris Paul drained a free-throw that temporarily gave the Warriors their biggest lead of the night. “C-P-THREE.”

It didn’t start well for Paul, who began his first regular season game in a Warriors uniform by shooting 0-for-6 from the floor, and it didn’t end well for the team, as the Warriors faded down the stretch in a 108-104 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

But as the cork came off of the 2023-24 Warriors season and the game started to breathe, the 38-year-old kept getting better.

He finished the game with 14 points on 4-for-15 shooting while adding six rebounds, two steals, nine assists and just one turnover.

“I thought he looked really comfortable tonight,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr.

There was much anticipation over whether or not Paul would be in the Warriors starting lineup this season, but Draymond Green’s ankle injury made that an easy decision for Kerr, who began his 10th year as the Warriors head coach with the following lineup: Paul, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Kevon Looney.

It was a difficult start, as the Warriors often looked “clunky” on offense, Kerr said. Watching Paul and Curry on the floor together in the first half was unusual for Warriors fans who are used to watching Curry take the ball up court.

It was a bit strange for Curry, too. He said he’s still trying to figure out where the shots are going to come from depending who is initiating the ball movement.

When Paul was at the point, there was often more of an intention on slowing the game down. He might be more deliberate with his work, a bit different than what Curry described as the Warriors’ “typical organized chaos.”

“We keep talking about the balance of playing fast but under control,” Paul said. “I’m just trying to figure out how we’re going to play this year. It’s not about what they did in the past. It’s about what our team is going to do right now to be successful.”

After a first half in which Paul, Curry and the Warriors looked like they were still feeling each other out, the Suns held a commanding 61-46 lead.

But with Curry and Paul on the floor together again to start the third quarter, something finally clicked. Curry got hot, demanded more of the ball and led the Warriors on a 15-3 run. And when he came out of the game midway through the quarter, Paul took over.

He hit his first field goal, an 11-foot jumper, to snap an 0-for-6 skid. Prioritizing everyone else’s shot over his for most of the game — NBA broadcaster Kenny Smith told TNT’s national audience that the Warriors are “too unselfish” during the halftime show — Paul finally began to attack the rim himself.

He dribbled past two defenders, faked a pass to Kevon Looney inside and converted a lay-up while getting fouled. As he waited at the free-throw line, the crowd began to chant, “C-P-THREE.”

“It was (surreal),” Paul said. “Dario (Šarić) looked at me and started laughing. And I couldn’t help but laugh. That was a first.”

Paul’s hot streak in the third pushed the Warriors lead to eight, but Curry got into foul trouble in the fourth and the Suns stormed back to win a close game.

    Still, the Warriors felt encouraged.

“A lot of confidence is building, we’ll continue to get better,” said Curry, who had 27 points while going just 4-for-14 from 3-point range.

Said Paul, “I’m just excited about it.”

Even after a game in which he had nine assists – his season average last year — Paul is quickly noticing that his ability to find open looks for others might more difficult than just taking it himself. Playing with Curry and Thompson, two of the best 3-point shooters in NBA history, can draw so much attention that Paul often found himself wide open from behind the arc.

“The freedom, the pull-up 3’s that I got a chance to shoot tonight, I don’t know,” said Paul, who went 0-for-6 from 3-point range. “When you’re playing with guys that shoot as good as Steph and Klay do, I think the more games we play together, the more and more comfortable I’ll get being aggressive and finding that balance.”

Paul agreed that the Warriors “almost have guys who are too unselfish,” but noted, “we’re all getting used to each other.”

  • ‘Declare Your Assets’ – EFCC Boss Orders Staff

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has ordered the staff of the Commission to immediately declare their assets in line with the civil service regulations and procedures.

The newly appointed EFCC chair gave the order on Tuesday as a bold move towards accountability and internal cleansing while addressing the senior staff of the EFCC, at the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission in Abuja,

Olukoyede stressed that fighting corruption required those at the vanguard to be above board.

He said: “All of us are going to declare our assets; from level 17, downward. I did mine, so there’s no reason for anyone to be afraid to do the same. Even the Commission Secretary did, you all may also have done it in the past, but there’s a need for all of us to do it again.

“We will declare our assets, and we are going to investigate it. We must live above board by setting the pace with good examples. As anti-corruption fighters, our hands must be clean, so we must declare our assets.”

The Chairman called on the staff to pay attention to the basis of fighting economic and financial crimes, highlighting that, such efforts should be geared towards growing the economy of the nation, creating rightful environment for enhanced investment and strengthening the productive base of the economy.

Olukoyede said: “We must do our job to add value to the nation. Investors must have confidence in the economy and we must help the country to be governed in an accountable and transparent manner. By doing this, it will offer us a new direction to redeem the image of the nation.

“Please, I beg you, let our hands be clean and put our house in order. Some may not like me, but I am going to do the right thing and treat everybody equally irrespective of religion, ethnicity and region.

“The EFCC is a creation of the law. We must do our job in line with the dictates of the law. This is a standard international practice and we would ensure that it is our established norm.”

  • Fact Check: Does Gov. Jim Justice oppose the “right-to-work” policy?

Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., is challenging Gov. Jim Justice for the Republican nomination for a U.S. Senate race in 2024. Mooney is attacking the governor by posting a “Phony Jim Justice” website.

Mooney’s website makes a number of claims, one of which is that Justice “opposes the Right to Work.”

“Right-to-work” refers to laws in 26 states that give the state government the authority “to determine whether workers can be required to join a labor union to get or keep a job,” according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Such laws generally make it hard for workers to join a union.

The Mooney website elaborated on the “right-to-work” claim by saying that Justice “threatened to veto an education reform package that would give teachers raises and put more money in the classroom all because the bill would have stopped automatically withholding union dues.”

We reached out to both candidates’ offices. Justice’s campaign did not respond to inquiries, but Mooney’s campaign did.

West Virginia passed its “right-to-work” bill in 2016. The Republican legislature overrode the veto of then-Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, a Democrat.

When Justice was running for governor as a Democrat in 2016, he proposed putting the “right-to-work” bill up for a statewide vote. But that never happened. (Justice switched his party affiliation to Republican in 2017.)

After Justice won the governorship, he vetoed a bill that was intended to modify the “right-to-work” law. Senate Bill 330 would have clarified how the bill would affect collective bargaining in the building and construction industry. Justice said the issue is one “for the Supreme Court to decide.”

In 2021, Justice held a town hall meeting in which he expressed disappointment with the “right-to-work law” passed in 2016.

“Really and truly, let’s just be brutally honest,” Justice said, according to West Virginia MetroNews. “We passed the right-to-work law in West Virginia. And we ran to the windows looking to see all the people that were going to come, and they didn’t come. … We’ve absolutely built the field in a lot of different places thinking build the field and they’ll come, and they didn’t come.”

This suggests that Justice is not in favor of the “right-to-work” law. However, after almost seven years in office he has not acted to overturn it, and his campaign website does not mention the policy one way or the other.

In addition, in 2021, Justice did sign a bill supported by “right-to-work backers” and opposed by labor unions.

That bill prohibited employers and payroll agents from withholding a portion of an employee’s pay for union political activities without the employee specifically authorizing it. It also barred state, municipal and county governments from withholding union or club dues from a public employee’s wages or salaries.

    Our ruling

Mooney said, “Jim Justice opposes the right to work.”

As a gubernatorial candidate in 2016, Justice suggested putting the state’s newly passed “right-to-work” law to a popular vote, and in 2017, he vetoed a provision that would have modified a portion of the law. At a 2021 event, Justice said he was disappointed with the law’s economic impact.

However, the word the Mooney campaign used was “opposes,” and there is no firm evidence of this. Despite Justice being in office for almost seven years, the “right-to-work” law remains in place, and as a current U.S. Senate candidate, Justice does not discuss his views on the law on his campaign website.

We rate the statement Mostly False.

  • Warriors’ big third quarter not enough in loss to Phoenix Suns

SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr warned that the Warriors wouldn’t perform on Opening Night up to their own expectations. If a few easy layups and bunnies go through, the Warriors might’ve looked sharper and made their 108-104 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night at Chase Center more of a contest.

They found themselves down 15 at the end of the first half with cold scoring from the starers. Chris Paul didn’t have the scoring touch in his Suns revenge game, going 0-for-6, Klay Thompson went 3-for-10 and Andrew Wiggins was missing easy looks constantly, going 2-for-8 from the field in the first half.

In a reversal from last season, the second unit managed to get them back in the game. Paul, alongside Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Gary Payton II and Dario Saric, infused the Warriors’ energy.  Moody was active on both ends, collecting 11 points, three steals, one block and three rebounds in 12 first-half minutes, leading the Warriors on a 14-4 run to close the first quarter tied 28-28.

Curry and Thompson found their strokes in the third quarter, both hitting a pair of 3-pointers to get the second half started. But Curry drew his fourth foul and Paul found himself back with the second unit to lead a Warriors burst. He scored his first bucket on a jumper with just under seven minutes in the third quarter and gained steam from there. He took advantage of the Warriors’ being in the bonus, drawing an and-1 bucket to give the Warriors their first lead of the half and drew a foul for free throws, prompting Chase Center into “CP3” chants.

The Warriors outscored the Suns 40-19 to take a six-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Curry incurred his fifth foul early in the fourth quarter, forcing Paul back into the game as Kevin Durant went to work to even the score. Curry checked back in with just over five minutes remaining in the game along with the rest of the starters, though Kuminga was in for Paul.

  • BREAKING: FG To Stop Hoarding Of Dollar In Cash By Digitalizing Nigeria’s FX Regime

    The-Whistler-NG-Breaking-News

As part of efforts to address Nigeria’s foreign exchange crisis, President Bola Tinubu’s administration is set to digitalize Nigeria’s foreign exchange regime to curb ‘speculative demands and hoarding’ of foreign exchange in cash.

This was one of the key recommendations outlined in the ‘Quick Wins Report’ presented to President Bola Tinubu by the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee on Tuesday.

The committee believes that digitizing the foreign exchange regime will make it more transparent and efficient, and will also make it more difficult for people to hoard foreign exchange in cash.

Chaired by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, the committee’s report unveiled a roadmap for fiscal governance, revenue transformation, and economic growth facilitation.

The committee’s terms of reference was structured into three phases: “Quick Wins” to be implemented within 30 days, critical reforms to be enacted within 6 months, and full implementation within 1 year.

The ‘quick wins’ seeks to address different economic challenges facing Nigeria in the short term, including exchange rate crisis, fuel subsidy removal, inflation, and the facilitation of economic growth.

The recommendations include measures to streamline public service functions, enhance public financial management, and optimize government assets and natural resources.

    The key recommendations include:

    1. Measures to address duplication of functions in public service, ensure prudent public financial management and optimize value from government assets and natural resources
    2. Policy signalling and collaboration by MDAs, economic management, and policy execution team
    3. Use of technology “Data4Tax” to expand the tax net
    4. Increase personal income tax exempt threshold and personal relief allowance
    5. Tax break for private sector in respect of wage increases to low-income earners, transport subsidy and net increase in employment
    6. Permit the payment of taxes on foreign currency denominated transactions in Naira for Nigerian businesses.
    7. Remove impediments to global employment opportunities for Nigerians based in Nigeria
    8. Suspension of VAT on diesel and tax waivers on CNG, CNG conversion, and renewable energy items
    9. Comprehensive review of tariffs on the 43 items unbanned from accessing forex in the official market and fiscal policy review of other items prohibited for imports
    10. Reforms of Withholding Tax Regulations to ensure simplicity and ease the pressure on working capital of businesses
    11. Facilitate the use of mobile phones for conditional cash transfers and introduce a spending framework for subsidy removal and forex reform windfall, including a national portal to track spending by FG, states and local governments
    12. Suspension of multiple taxes which place burdens on the poor and small businesses and compensate with windfalls revenue of certain agencies
    13. Expand the official foreign exchange market to incorporate BDCs, forex apps and retail fx dealers, and outlaw transactions in the black market
    14. Digitalise Nigeria’s fx regime and discourage speculative demands and hoarding of fx in cash
    15. Imposition of excise tax on foreign exchange transactions outside the official market
    16. Implement forward contracts for the importation of PMS as a short-term measure pending improvement in key economic indices
    17. Discontinue with the fx verification portal and requirement for Certificate of Capital Importation and export proceeds restriction
    18. Address impediments to export promotion and bottlenecks regarding Exports Expansion Grants, and remove restriction on repatriation and use of export proceeds by exporters
    19. Modify Tax ProMax to allow taxpayers to make part payments of outstanding tax liabilities
    20. Grant waiver of penalty and interests on the condition of full payment of outstanding tax liabilities on or before 31 December 2023.

Earlier, President Tinubu’s media adviser, Ajuri Ngelale, quoted his principal as commending the committee after receiving the report.

“I have listened attentively to your report. Charting the critical path forward for Nigeria’s economic recovery is crucial to all of us. I want to say thank you to your delegation,” President Tinubu stated.

Ajuri said the President alsoy granted the request of the Committee to address a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and apprise cabinet members of their work and expected outcomes to facilitate economic growth.

He said Tinubu directed Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman, the Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, to coordinate with the relevant government officials for the session.

In his remarks, the Acting Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr. Zacch Adedeji, pledged to ensure the implementation of the recommendations of the Committee, as they may apply, pending the approval of the President.

Adedeji declared that beyond supporting the fiscal and tax reforms, the FIRS will explore opportunities to diversify the nation’s revenue sources, as the historical overreliance on oil has made the economy vulnerable.

”Nigeria’s fiscal policy serves as the foundation of economic stability. It dictates how the government collects, manages and allocates resources for the betterment of our people. A well-developed fiscal policy is crucial for provision of infrastructure, healthcare, education and social services to our growing population. Tax reforms are an integral part of a robust fiscal policy.

”While our current tax system has contributed significantly to our revenue, there remains room for further enhancement; enhancement that can be driven with digital technology. To achieve this, we are collaborating with the Presidential Committee to streamline our tax laws, improve voluntary compliance, and expand the tax base to ensure equity and fairness,” the Acting FIRS Chairman said.

Meanwhile, Oyedele was said to have urged President Tinubu to push for an emergency economic intervention bill (Executive Bill) and the issuance of Presidential Executive Orders to address the duplication of functions across the public service, and to ensure prudent public financial management in a bid to optimize value from government assets and natural resources.

  • Fact Check: Petition critical of Joe Manchin exaggerates number of W.Va. fossil fuel jobs at risk

In 2024, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., is up for reelection. If he runs again, he faces an uphill challenge as a Democrat running in what has become a solidly Republican state. Already, term-limited Gov. Jim Justice is running in the Republican primary, as is U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney.

One Nation, a conservative group that has been involved in politics for several election cycles but does not disclose its donors, targeted Manchin in a petition on its website, calling attention to his vote in favor of the Inflation Reduction Act.

As PolitiFact has noted, the Inflation Reduction Act includes a green energy package costing $369 billion over 10 years. It includes tax credits to boost investment in solar, wind, hydropower and other renewable energy. Such provisions have attracted opposition from oil and natural gas producers, including some in West Virginia, who say it puts their industries at a disadvantage.

In the petition, One Nation wrote:

“West Virginia’s way of life depends on coal jobs. But the purpose of the climate provisions in President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, supported by Senator Joe Manchin “was to drive coal plants … out of business.” Senator Manchin’s support for the IRA could cost West Virginia 100,000 fossil fuel jobs! And what did Senator Manchin get? A pen. Tell Senator Manchin to stop writing off West Virginia JOBS and supporting Biden’s Liberal Climate policy. Sign the Petition below!”

Is the petition correct that the Inflation Reduction Act “could cost West Virginia 100,000 fossil fuel jobs”?

We found that it’s possible some jobs could be lost in the transition to non-fossil fuel energy, but the 100,000 figure for West Virginia job losses is exaggerated.

One Nation did not respond to inquiries for this article.

    Running the numbers

In 2019, PolitiFact West Virginia looked at how many oil and gas jobs West Virginia had.

We found that the answer was complicated, but no estimate for oil and gas jobs came close to 100,000.

In 2021, the American Petroleum Institute, an oil and gas industry association, published the most recent version of a report analyzing the oil and gas industry’s U.S. economic impact.

It found that West Virginia had 32,300 workers directly employed in the oil and gas industry, and that the sector supported a combined 82,000 jobs directly and indirectly. The indirect jobs included jobs that provided goods or services to the industry, as well as “induced” jobs, which were supported by expenditures by people employed within oil and natural gas industries.

As we reported in 2019, it’s important to note that this data comes from the industry itself, rather than an independent arbiter.

Official government data shows a far smaller number of jobs. The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics found 1,904 jobs in oil and gas extraction in West Virginia at the end of first quarter 2023. That’s down from a peak of more than 2,900 in several quarters of 2014 and 2015.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found an additional 2,251 workers engaged in “support activities for oil and gas operations,” down from nearly 4,600 in 2014.

Together, that works out to 4,155 workers in West Virginia for these two categories. Adding in roughly 22,000 jobs in coal mining, that totals a bit over 26,000 jobs.

Experts in employment data had a couple of explanations for the differences between the two analyses.

The petroleum institute told PolitiFact West Virginia in 2019 that the official federal data excludes contractors and sole proprietorships and partnerships, which play a significant role in the oil and gas extraction sector. Experts also said that professional services — such as lawyers reviewing lease agreements for drilling — wouldn’t necessarily be captured in the bureau’s data.

In addition, the institute’s study includes several industry sectors that are outside of the pure oil and gas extraction activities captured in the bureau’s data. The report lists such categories as oil and gas pipeline construction, petroleum refining, various types of asphalt manufacturing, and gas stations.

The inclusion of gas stations may go the furthest to explain the divergence between the data.

The institute’s report didn’t specify how many of the oil and gas jobs in West Virginia come from gas stations, but in its nationwide data, gas stations accounted for about 39% of all the jobs it tallied in the oil and gas sector. So including gas station jobs amplifies the institute’s job numbers.

Finally, we looked at the U.S. Energy and Employment Report, a periodic study published most recently this year by the Energy Department.

It found 8,972 West Virginia jobs in the oil and gas sector and 16,955 in the coal sector, for a total of 25,927 fossil fuel jobs.

In all, the three employment analyses suggest that the number of direct fossil fuel jobs in West Virginia is somewhere between 25,000 and 55,000.

Meanwhile, the petition assumes that every single fossil fuel job in the state would be lost, and that no jobs would be gained in the renewable energy sector after the Inflation Reduction Act’s passage.

We couldn’t find specific projections for West Virginia, but nationally, the Energy Futures Initiative, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank headed by Ernest Moniz, the Energy Secretary under former President Barack Obama, projects a net gain of 1.46 million jobs by 2030 due to the law’s policy changes.

    Our ruling

One Nation said Manchin’s “support for the (Inflation Reduction Act) could cost West Virginia 100,000 fossil fuel jobs.”

No one knows how many jobs could be lost in West Virginia during the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, but the estimates suggest there aren’t even 100,000 fossil fuel jobs in West Virginia today, making the claim mathematically impossible. This assertion also assumes West Virginia doesn’t gain any renewable energy jobs.

We rate the statement Mostly False.

  • Sam Reinhart. Florida Panthers send San Jose Sharks to another loss

The San Jose Sharks’ woes to start the 2023-2024 season have now reached historic proportions.

The Sharks allowed two second-period goals, including a power play marker to Sam Reinhart at the 15:23 mark, and were unable to recover in a 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday at Amerant Bank Arena.

Fabian Zetterlund scored a power-play goal at the 8:30 mark of the second period and goalie Mackenzie Blackwood finished with 32 saves as the Sharks fell to 0-5-1, marking the first time in the team’s 32-season history that they’ve started a year with six straight losses.

Last season, the Sharks lost five straight games in regulation time before they beat the New York Rangers 3-2 in overtime at Madison Square Garden. The Sharks had gone winless in their first six games before, going 0-3-3 in 1995 and 0-4-2 in 1998, but that was in an era where games could end in ties.

Panthers starting goalie and noted Sharks killer Anthony Stolarz made 27 saves Tuesday and improved to 9-1-0 in 12 career games against San Jose.

Carter Verhaeghe and Kevin Stenlund also scored for Florida, with Stenlund’s goal coming with 1.5 seconds left in the third period.

The Sharks now have just eight goals in six games and an NHL-worst goal differential of -15. Of their first six opponents this season, five made the playoffs last season, including both Stanley Cup finalists in Florida and the Vegas Golden Knights.

Zetterlund’s goal, his second of the season, came at the end of a Sharks power play.

William Eklund took a short pass from Thomas Bordeleau and darted toward the area behind the Panthers’ net. But as he was nearly directly behind Florida goalie Anthony Stolarz, he sent a pass back to Zetterlund for a Sharks power-play goal.

The Panthers quickly responded, though. After a Florida forecheck, Matthew Tkachuk controlled the puck behind the Sharks net and sent a pass in front to a wide-open Verhaeghe, who scored his third of the season past a helpless Blackwood to tie the game 1-1 at the 9:48 mark of the second.

  • Abia Govt To Relocate Residents Over Flooding, Pledge To Tackle Erosion

The Abia State Government has announced plans to relocate its residents who have been directly affected by the erosion.

The State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, disclosed this to newsmen in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

Kanu’s assertion was against the menace of erosion ravaging the Ovom community in the Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

“There are plans to offer some relocation assistance to those directly affected by the erosion problem.

“Meanwhile, the government has advised those whose homes are 10 meters away from the erosion site to move immediately,” he said.

The commissioner noted that their exit would prevent them from the impending crisis that may arise if caught up in the flash floods that may follow the erosion paths around the Ovom area.

Kalu said the Abia government is determined to provide lasting solutions to the issue of erosion, adding that further details of the relocation plans and the logistics are underway.

Residents in Abia State living in flood-prone areas have been greeted with the annual fear of the menace as over 3000 houses are under the threat of caving into the gully thereby sacking the entire community.

In September, a torrential rain that lasted for over 16 hours affected a two-storey building and a four-bedroom bungalow in the Bende Local Government of the state.
