  • Strike: We Won’t Attend Any Negotiation Meeting Called By FG With Labour Minister -NLC

    NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to meet with the Federal Government (FG) over issues bothering on fuel subsidy palliative.

This is just as the Labour Union disclosed that it would cancel the meeting if the Minister of Labour and Employment Simon Lalong will be in attendance.

The invitation to both leaders of NLC and TUC was sent by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

THE WHISTLER had reported that the union accused Lalong of sabotaging its agreement with the FG while displaying favouritism in handling a critical item in the agreement that involves the illegal closure of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) headquarters with the support of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Hopefully, we may meet on Monday with the federal government to see whether the agreement with organised labour on the fuel subsidy removal palliatives was met or not.

“If that meeting is to hold, it will be without the Minister of Labour and Employment, because we will not be part of any meeting with the federal government that the Minister of Labour and Employment will attend.

“Any meeting the Federal Government calls today with the Minister of Labour and Employment, that meeting will not hold.

“You have noticed of late that meetings are no longer called by the Minister of Labour because he is not in control, to depend on him for resolutions on issues about Labour is to waste our time” Ajaero said

The meeting will be the first dialogue the Labour unions will be having with the FG after suspending the nationwide strike action on October 1, 2023.

  • San Jose Sharks, David Quinn stay upbeat after 0-8-1 start

The San Jose Sharks lost their ninth straight game to open the season Sunday. But to coach David Quinn and a few of his players, this one felt a little bit different.

Welcoming center Mikael Granlund back to the lineup after a seven-game absence, the Sharks hung into the puck longer, improved their forecheck and breakouts, and created a few more scoring chances – at least more than they had earlier on their road trip and during their season-opening homestand.

The result, though, remained the same, as the Sharks allowed third-period goals to Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson before they gave up an empty-netter to Evgeny Kuznetsov in a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals.

Mackenzie Blackwood was terrific in net as he made 39 saves. But as had been the case in seven of the Sharks’ first eight games, their goalie needed to be perfect for them to earn their first win of the season.

With the one goal, a first-period marker by Luke Kunin, the Sharks (0-8-1) became the ninth team in NHL history, and the second since the center red line was introduced in 1943, to score just nine goals or fewer in their first nine games.

“Right now we have such a thin margin for error,” Sharks coach David Quinn said. “Usually if you only give up two goals, you like your chances. But right now, we’re really snake-bit.”

On the tying goal at the 2:18 mark of the third period, Mike Hoffman tried to glove down a head-manning pass inside the Sharks’ blue line. Instead, the puck went off his hand and right to the Capitals. Strome later took a Nick Jensen pass and fired a shot that got past a screened Blackwood.

On a scramble beside the Sharks’ goal, Wilson chipped a puck over goalie Mackenzie Blackwood which went off defenseman Kyle Burroughs into the net with 4:45 left in regulation time for a 2-1 Capitals lead.

Kuznetsov then added an empty net goal for the Capitals with 58 seconds left.

Kunin’s goal, his first since Nov. 27 of last season, came at the 11:40 mark of the first period.

After some work deep in the Capitals’ zone, William Eklund got the puck back to the blue line, where it swung around to defenseman Ty Emberson, who fired it toward the Washington net. Kunin picked up the loose puck around the net, and chipped it past Darcy Kuemper, giving San Jose the lead.

Granlund, who had been out with a lower-body ailment since the Sharks’ season-opening game on Oct. 12, centered a line with Kunin and Eklund. That line was easily San Jose’s best in terms of creating scoring chances, as they finished with 11, per Natural Stat Trick, and all other lines combined for just nine.

Still, having Granlund back after he was activated earlier Sunday, and the play of his line — including a rapidly improving Eklund – gives the Sharks some hope that better days might be just ahead.

Hey, when you’ve held a lead just three times in nine games, there’s nowhere to go but up.

“Obviously, I’ve been out of the lineup for a while, but I think tonight we were creating something a little bit, like actual chances,” said Granlund, who had two shots on net in 17:47 of ice time. “It’s just a step in the right direction. But, still, we only got one and it’s hard to win in this league if you only get one goal.”

Kunin’s goal snapped a goalless drought of 163 minutes and 10 seconds, the third longest in Sharks history. San Jose had been shut out in each of its last two games, in losses to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes, and hadn’t scored since the second period of their game on Tuesday against the Florida Panthers.

“It’s nice, but I want to win hockey games,” Kunin said of his goal. “When we win, all of that stuff will come for everyone. But it comes down to execution as far as doing the right thing so we can win. That’s all I’m focused on.”

  • Chris Paul’s bench unit carries, Steph Curry ices Warriors road win

HOUSTON — Chris Paul can remember only twice coming off the bench in his entire basketball career.

The last time was for Team USA’s “Redeem Team” in the 2008 Olympics that featured LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade. The only other time came way back to 2004, his Wake Forest college days, when Paul missed the bus for a game against Temple and sat out the first four minutes.

Paul had started every one of his 1,365 regular season and playoff games in his 19-year NBA career until Sunday’s game against the Houston Rockets (0-3). Three games into his tenure with the Warriors, Paul came off the bench to make room for Draymond Green’s season debut and return to the starting five. The plan is to go with the same starters on Monday against the New Orleans Pelicans, too.

“Who likes new things, you know what I’m saying? (But) It’s not a matter of liking it,” Paul said. “It’s new. I don’t know, I don’t hate it. It’s not a matter of liking it. I liked the fact that we won.”

The Warriors did beat Paul’s former team, 106-95, at Toyota Center on Sunday night. They move to 2-1, both their wins coming on the road. Last year, Golden State didn’t win their second road game until Nov. 27.

Coach Steve Kerr said Paul accepting role off the bench is “massive” and compared it to Andre Iguodala — a career starter and veteran — accepting a bench role in 2014. It was a sacrifice that brought the team cohesion together for their first title in 2015.

“It’s a great sign, because we were champions that season,” Klay Thompson said. “Hopefully the same result happens (this year), but Andre is one of the best Warriors of all time. And Chris is one of the best point guards of all time and to be as selfless as he is to break that streak, it’s just awesome.”

The conversation with Paul about having him come off the bench was easy, Kerr said.

“When I talked to him this morning about it, he just nodded his head and said, ‘Let’s go get ‘em,’” Kerr said. “Like, not even a big deal.”

Unfamiliarity didn’t alter Paul’s impact on the second unit — he, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Gary Payton II and Dario Saric, primarily, turned a three-point deficit mid-way through the first quarter into a 13-point lead midway through the second quarter when Curry returned.

The bench unit outscored Houston’s reserves 41-21 in the game, led by Payton’s 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers from his favorite left corner. Kuminga had nine points and Paul added six points with seven assists with a team-high plus-22 for the game.

“I have always been the same way as far as competing and doing whatever I got to do to help our team win,” Paul said. “In this role, if that means starting, if that means coming off the bench. I know who I am and what I am able to do. With our team, it works.”

The Warriors needed a little something from the starters to stave off a Rockets fourth-quarter comeback, though. Thompson had 19 points on 12 shots, including five 3-pointers. Green turned a rusty first half into a productive second half, finishing with five assists and five rebounds.

Curry put on a show different from his 41-point spectacular against the Kings two days ago. Shaking off pesky defender and longtime foe Dillon Brooks, Curry hit four straight 3-pointers in the final five minutes to turn a one-point lead into an 11-point lead within two minutes.

Curry taunted Brooks after dicing him up one-on-one for his fourth 3-pointer of the frame, throwing his hands to his face as if shocked at his own skill.

“We know what he’s about and his reputation,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area about the Warriors’ former Memphis adversary. “I don’t get caught up in that. I just play basketball. So obviously you let the game do the talking.

“There’s a lot of history with him particularly. End of the day, you just hoop. And the results speak for themselves. I like to have fun, especially in the fourth quarter when it’s winning time.”

Curry finished with 24 points on 6-of-14 from 3, including 14 points in the fourth quarter. Green played 19 minutes on a minutes restriction after returning from his ankle sprain.

  • Buhari: My Intervention Saved Nigeria From Losing One-Third Of Its Foreign Reserves To P&ID

    Buhari-2023-Budget

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has recalled how his intervention saved Nigeria from losing one-third of its foreign reserves, approximately USD 15 billion, to Process & Industrial Development (P&ID) in a recently resolved arbitration dispute.

Buhari, in an opinion article titled “A Matter of Principle” on Sunday, revisited the role he, his late former Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari; and ex-Attorney-General, Abubakar Malami, played in preventing Nigeria from suffering the huge loss.

According to Buhari, Nigeria would have been unable to build new schools, train nurses, repair roads or award contracts if it had lost the lawsuit to P&ID.

The Federal Government under Buhari had challenged the arbitration award granted against it to P&ID in 2017. It resulted from a contract won by the company to build a gas processing plant in Cross Rivers State but which ran into problems.

With interest, the judgment debt had grown from $6.6 billion to over US$11 billion.

But on Monday, Justice Robin Knowles of the Business and Property Court in London upturned the judgment, thereby halting enforcement of the arbitration award in favour of P&ID.

The court found that the award had been obtained by fraud, as the Judge concluded that P&ID obtained the award only by “practising the most severe abuses of the arbitral process”.

Reacting in his opinion piece, Buhari recalled that the P&ID case which began before he assumed office in 2015, “would have cost our people close to USD15 billion” adding “We won, and all decent people can sleep easier as a result.”

Buhari said he was determined to get Nigeria a fair hearing, and as such tasked the late Kyari and Malami with getting to the root of the case and securing a favourable outcome for Nigeria.

“Nigeria was in court in London, trying to talk down liability and costs. Back at home, fixers were looking to work out a quiet settlement. This is often the way. A lot of contracts end up in dispute. P&ID won a settlement in 2017 of USD6 billion, with compound interest. People, including out of work ex-British Cabinet Minister Priti Patel, were queuing up to insist we paid, or risk Nigeria becoming an untrustworthy trade pariah.

“Working with a number of different agencies and senior officials of government, we began to find a huge amount of evidence, not all of which Justice Knowles was to accept. But he agreed that P&ID had paid bribes. He agreed that one of P&ID’s founders had committed perjury. And he agreed that P&ID had somehow found in its possession a steady supply of Nigeria’s privileged internal legal documents, outlining our plans, strategies and problems.

“My own view is that this whole, sorry affair shows how important it is to follow the legal process in resolving a dispute. It shows that given time and opportunity for each side to present their case, the temple of justice can satisfactorily resolve all disputes without resort to extra-judicial measures. It was definitely worth the struggle: this was an attempted heist of historic proportions, an attempt to steal from the treasury a third of Nigeria’s foreign reserves,” the ex-president wrote.

Concluding, Buhari urged Nigerians to learn from the P&ID case on the need for transparency in government contracts and called for stricter punishments for corrupt government officials who collude with foreign criminals to defraud the country.

  • Brock Purdy struggles again as offense fails to score

SANTA CLARA — It wasn’t so long ago when October looked like it would be “Brocktober,” with the 49ers riding the wave of their unlikely second-year quarterback to an 8-0 record heading into the bye week, casting an eye toward the playoffs and Super Bowl LVIII.

It seems like a lifetime ago after three consecutive losses, with Brock Purdy throwing two bad interceptions that helped account for the final margin Sunday in a demoralizing 31-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at Levi’s Stadium.

That’s five interceptions over the last three games after throwing none over the first five. There was almost a sixth — wiped out by penalty — in the final minutes, and then Purdy lost the ball anyway on a sack-fumble as Cincinnati was celebrating after improving its record to 4-3.

Purdy became a national story in part because of good judgment, the ability to straddle the line between risk and reward and above all staying away from turnovers.

“Even when you’re trying to make something happen, be smart with it as well,” Purdy said. “There’s definitely a fine line to it and I learned the hard way today.”

Purdy was 22 of 31 and threw for 365 yards — his most in an NFL game. But make no mistake, the championship-level quarterback was on the other side of the field. Joe Burrow was a coolly efficient 28 of 32 for 283 yards and three touchdowns, delivering dimes when the 49ers needed interceptions.

This would hardly be a story back in September, when Purdy was still a curiosity and Burrow was rightly regaled as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, paid as such to the tune of a $55 million average salary.

Purdy, whose two interceptions helped derail what could have been his first come-from-behind NFL win, is making $870,000 on the deal he signed after being a seventh-round draft pick in 2022.

The first pick came with the 49ers trailing 17-10 and Purdy driving the 49ers from their own 24 to the Cincinnati 8 as the third quarter was winding down. Out of a shotgun on first-and-goal, Purdy was supposed to shovel the ball to George Kittle, except he believed Kittle to be covered and instead he held the ball.

Purdy rolled out, saw Elijah Mitchell in the corner of the end zone, and instead threw it directly into the path of linebacker Germaine Pratt. It was a mistake on two fronts, because linemen were already downfield, which would have been a penalty anyway.

    “That’s on me,” Purdy said.

Early in the fourth quarter, with the score still 17-10 after the 49ers’ defense got the ball back (something that didn’t happen often enough), Purdy threw toward Brandon Aiyuk over the middle and instead threw it directly to linebacker Logan Wilson for the interception.

On the next play, Burrow hit Ja’Marr Chase for a 17-yard touchdown.

    Ballgame.

Besides the three losses, Purdy also weathered a concussion, clearing protocol Saturday after limited practice.

“I felt 100 percent all week,” Purdy said. “My symptoms weren’t bad.”

Coach Kyle Shanahan and Purdy’s teammates remained in his corner, acknowledging the mistakes but all repeating different variations of “We wouldn’t been in the game without him.”

Linebacker Fred Warner said, `Brock is the least of my worries. Brock is made of the right stuff.”

“He took ownership for his mistakes,” defensive end Nick Bosa said. “He played awesome, I thought, except for a couple plays. I think a lot of people on this team feel the same way.”

Yet part of what made Purdy so good through five games was a symbiosis with his teammates. They made him better and he made them better. After three straight games of 17 points after going for 30 or more in each of the first five, the 49ers’ offense is suddenly mistake-prone and scattershot.

As good as Purdy has been on anticipatory throws — he completed some passes Sunday that Trey Lance or Jimmy Garoppolo could only dream of — ideally the 49ers would like to stay in third-and-6 or better, pile up first downs and sit on a lead if at all possible.

It’s a format that worked with Garoppolo and was working even better with Purdy. After the high of the 42-10 wipeout of Dallas on Oct. 8, the 49ers have issues in all three phases and have been sliced and diced in back-to-back weeks by Kirk Cousins and Burrow.

Last season and through the hot streak this season, Purdy didn’t run all that often, although he occasionally bought time with his legs. He’s running much more often of late because plays are breaking down. He finished with a team-high 57 yards rushing on nine carries — 43 of them in the first half.

Rather than precise execution, Purdy is being creative more than Shanahan ever planned.

  • JUST IN: Rivers Assembly Burnt Amid Alleged Rift Between Gov Fubara, Wike

The Rivers State House of Assembly complex was gutted by fire on Sunday night.

The fire broke out at around 10:00 PM, and it took firefighters several hours to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Videos circulating online show the charred remains of the assembly chamber, with the roof and walls completely destroyed.

The fire comes amid rumours of alleged rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesome Wike, now Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The development also came amid an alleged impeachment plot against Governor Fubara by the Rivers Assembly.

A group identified as the Rivers in Diaspora had reportedly raised alarm over what it described as “the sinister plan by some unscrupulous elements to cause disaffection between the incumbent Governor and his mentor.”

  • Luke Kunin, San Jose Sharks lose to Washington Capitals

The San Jose Sharks were 20 minutes away from their first victory of the season on Sunday.

But unless they expect their goalies to be perfect, it’s going to be hard to earn a win by scoring just once a game.

The Sharks led by one going into the third period but allowed goals by Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson in the final 18 minutes in a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals, extending San Jose’s season-long losing streak to nine games.

On a scramble beside the Sharks’ goal, Wilson chipped a puck over goalie Mackenzie Blackwood which went off defenseman Kyle Burroughs into the net with 4:45 left in regulation time for a 2-1 Capitals lead.

Evgeny Kuznetsov then added an empty net goal for the Capitals with 58 seconds left.

Luke Kunin scored the Sharks’ only goal and Blackwood finished with 39 saves.

The Sharks (0-8-1) have now scored just nine goals in nine games.

On Washington’s tying goal at the 2:18 mark of the third period, Mike Hoffman tried to glove down a head-manning pass inside the Sharks’ blue line. But instead, it went off his hand and right to the Capitals. Strome then took a Nick Jensen pass and fired a shot that got past a screened Blackwood.

Kunin picked up the loose puck around the net, and chipped it past Darcy Kuemper, giving San Jose just its third lead of the season.

The goal snapped a Sharks goalless drought of 163 minutes and 10 seconds, the third longest in team history. San Jose had been shut out in each of its last two games, in losses to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes, and hadn’t scored since the second period of their game on Tuesday against the Florida Panthers.

The Sharks officially activated Mikael Granlund off of injured reserve on Sunday morning.

Granlund has dealt with a lower-body injury since the Sharks’ Oct. 12 season-opener. He appeared set to come back into the lineup near the start of the road trip as he was preparing to play the Panthers, but suffered what was described as a minor setback.

  • 9,400 Dead: ICC Investigates War Crimes By Hamas, IDF Against Israelis, Palestinians

The International Criminal Court’s Prosecutor, Karim Khan, said Sunday that the ICC remained determined to conduct an objective investigation into crimes allegedly committed against Israel and Gaza by the Hamas militants and Israel’s Defense Forces(IDF).

This was as the death toll in the ongoing war between IDF and Hamas (which started on October 7) has killed over 9,400 civilians including children and left over 20,000 persons wounded.

The Palestine Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted Sunday that “the total number of martyrs due to the ongoing Israeli occupation forces aggression against Gaza Strip and the West Bank, since October 7th, has risen to 8,069 martyrs and more than 20,000 injured.”

The Israeli side equally disclosed that over 1,400 dead bodies of Israelis have been recovered so far since the Infiltration of Southern Israel by Hamas militants.

Speaking in a video uploaded by the ICC on Sunday, Khan, who visited the Rafah Border Crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip this weekend, said the conflicts are the most tragic of days.

“The suffering of women, children, old and young is profound and it is ongoing,” he added.

He noted there is a dire humanitarian situation developing but assured that the ICC has an active investigation ongoing relating to crimes allegedly committed in Israel on October 7 and also about Gaza and the West Bank.

“We are independently looking at the situation in Palestine and the events in Israel and the allegations that Palestine nationals have also committed crimes,” Khan said while calling for the cooperation of parties.

“We also have the determination to separate allegations from facts,” Khan assured.

He also called for no impediment to humanitarian relief support to civilians.

Meanwhile, the Israeli government said Sunday that its goal is to destroy the Hamas military and government.

  • 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey ties NFL touchdown record

SANTA CLARA — Lenny Moore has some company in the record books.

Christian McCaffrey scored a touchdown in his 17th straight game including playoffs Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals at Levi’s Stadium.

With 3:19 left in the first quarter, McCaffrey scored on a 2-yard run to camp a 75-yard drive in eight plays, taking 4:52 off the clock and tying the score 7-7.

McCaffrey came in one touchdown behind Moore after scoring two touchdowns in last week’s 22-17 road loss to the Minnesota Vikings. In 21 games including the one in each of the 49ers’ three playoff games last season, McCaffrey came having scored 21 touchdowns. He arrived on Oct. 20 of last season.

The streak began on Dec. 4 of last season, catching a 3-yard pass from Brock Purdy in a 33-17 win over MIami. That was the same game in which Jimmy Garoppolo broke his ankle, thrusting Purdy into the role of starter.

Moore set the record, which includes playoff games, by scoring a touchdown in the last three games of the 1963 season and all 14 games in 1964. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Moore was one of the first rushing-receiving backs who was often split wide to create defensive mismatches — the same role McCaffrey has excelled at since being drafted by Carolina out of Stanford in 2017.

It was the 12th touchdown this season for McCaffrey, tying him with Miami running back and former 49er Raheem Mostert for the NFL lead. Mostert scored his 12th touchdown Sunday against the New England Patriots.

McCaffrey started the day as the NFL’s leading rusher with 598 yards, gaining 450 yards in the first four games and 138 in the last three.
