  • ‘Wike And I Will Work For Development’ – Fubara Apologises For Rivers Crisis

    Nyesom-Wike-Siminalayi-Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Simi Fubara has apologised over the leadership crisis in the state assuring that he’s working with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike for peace and development of the state.

He stated this days after there was an impeachment attempt on him via a statement he shared on X on Saturday.

The once cordial political association descended into crisis when Wike, who’s the Minister of the Federal Capital made a move on the governor to be removed after failing to get his wishes regarding contract awards and monthly payment.

The Minister later defended his action noting that he was losing his political structure which could also kill his political relevance in the state, vowing that he was ready to fight his successor in control of the state political structure.

Fubara who had earlier vowed to ward off what he called external interference by way of godfatherism stated in his statement on Saturday that “peace is priceless” saying he considered it “necessary to issue this statement on the developments of the past few days in our dear state.”

The governor who alleged that the police had shot at him during his visit to the State Assembly complex explained that, “Late on Sunday night, 29th October 2023, I was inundated with reports that the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly has been gutter by fire.

“The blaze was successfully put out by the fire service, after which security agencies took control of the situation.

Y visit to the Assembly Complex on Monday, 30th October 2023 was to assess the level of damage and undertake remedial measures to protect lives and property within the Assembly complex.

“I charged the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and report to me.

“Shortly after, I got reports that the State House of Assembly had broken into two factions: one claiming to have impeached and suspended the House Leader and three others preparatory to instigating an impeachment action against me, and the other rival faction impeaching the Speaker and the deputy speaker, thus sparking off some form of political crisis.

“I wish to thank the President, Bola Tinubu for his fatherly intervention which opened a series of communication channels to facilitate the timely resolution of the festering crises.

“I wish to also thank our elders who are currently intervening in the matter.

“Let me clearly state that my actions are aimed at restoring peace and stability in our state.

“I am a man of peace and as governor, the advancement of our state is my primary concern.

“Consequently, no sacrifice is too much for me to make to achieve this objective.”

Fubara added, “It’s the collective responsibility of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and my humble self to leverage on our positions and influences within and outside the state to advance the progress, security and well-being of our people.

“We must therefore not allow circumstances that could retard all efforts at achieving greatness for our people to prevail.

“On my part, I am always willing and ready to embrace the path to lasting peace and tranquillity with a commitment to consummating all efforts and initiatives by the president and other well-meaning Nigerians, including my brother governors and elders.

“I assure the good people and youths of Rivers State, that peace will certainly prevail and we shall continue to work together to advance the peace, security, progress and development of our state.

“Governor, I sincerely apologise to the good people of Rivers State for the regrettable anxieties of the last few days, while thanking you all for your concerns, and continued support, love, and prayers.”

  • Fact Check: U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson is the 56th speaker of the House

U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., was elected speaker of the House of Representatives on Oct. 25, becoming the 56th person to lead the chamber.

But some social media posts are claiming he’s actually the 45th speaker.

“45th speaker of the House!!” reads text in a TikTok video shared on Facebook. “Hear that!!! Omg!!”

The video begins with a Fox News clip of Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., saying: “It is my great pleasure to introduce the 45th speaker of the House, my dear friend Mike Johnson.”

A woman in the TikTok video then says that Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was elected 52nd speaker of the House in 2007 as text from a Wikipedia post appears behind her.

“52nd, 45th,” the woman says. “We went backwards?”

Later, an X post appears in the video that says, “Mike Johnson being sworn in as the 45th speaker went over everyone’s head. People are wide asleep.”

The woman also suggests that former President Donald Trump, the 45th president, is somehow involved.

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The clip of Scalise is authentic, but he misspoke. That’s made clear in a transcript of his remarks shared on his website.

“It is my great privilege to introduce the (56th) Speaker of the House, my dear friend Mike Johnson, the speaker,” it says on the site.

John McCormack, D-Mass., was the 45th speaker of the House from 1961 to 1971.

Pelosi served as the 52nd speaker of the House in the 110th and 111th Congress, from 2007 to 2011. After Republicans regained control of the chamber that year, then-Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, was elected as the 53rd speaker. He was succeeded by then-Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who was the 54th speaker. Pelosi was reelected to the position in 2017 and served for the 115th-117th Congresses before Republicans regained control and elected House speaker No. 55: Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

He was ousted in October, clearing the way for Johnson.

  • Don’t pre-tip on delivery? Don’t expect your food quickly, DoorDash warns – Paradise Post

Carly Olson | (TNS) Los Angeles Times

Americans are tipping their delivery drivers less often than they did last year. DoorDash is seeking to reverse that trend with an automated nudge — one that carries a hint of a threat.

The food delivery service is testing out a new in-app warning that encourages non-tipping customers to rethink their decisions.

Customers selecting a $0 tip while placing orders now see a pop-up message cautioning that orders without tips might take longer to be delivered. The tech news site The Verge first reported the change.

“Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered — are you sure you want to continue?” the pop-up reads. “Dashers can pick and choose which orders they want to do. Orders that take longer to be accepted by Dashers tend to result in slower delivery.”

DoorDash said it began rolling out the “reminder screen” to customers a couple of months ago, but it generated buzz after a tweet showing a screenshot of the warning began circulating on Tuesday.

There has been growing confusion — and resentment — over tipping etiquette coming out of the pandemic, but declining to tip on food delivered to one’s door is still a clear faux pas.

The new DoorDash pop-up doesn’t change anything about ordering on the app or the delivery experience — it’s a warning for customers about what may go on behind the scenes. Already, DoorDash drivers, also known as Dashers, can see how much money they can expect to make from a delivery before accepting an order. If a payout looks low, it might take longer for a Dasher to accept the order.

Dashers aren’t told precisely how much a customer is tipping, but experienced delivery drivers can tell when something looks unusually low.

Gig workers who offer driving services already use their discretion when deciding which jobs to take on, with many competing apps vying for their services.

“As independent contractors, Dashers have full freedom to accept or reject offers based on what they view as valuable and rewarding,” Jenn Rosenberg, a company spokeswoman, said in a statement. “While the vast majority of customers do leave a tip, offers that don’t include a tip can be seen as less desirable — this impacts our entire community, leading to longer wait times for customers, orders sitting longer at merchants, and less value for Dashers.”

DoorDash has seen a reduction in $0 tip orders since beginning the test.

A model like DoorDash’s that encourages tipping before the service is received has challenged traditional conventions. The current model disadvantages customers who prefer to tip in cash and those who tip after an order has been delivered based on the quality of service. At the same time, it offers transparency to drivers whose incomes are tied to the jobs they accept.

The DoorDash pop-up comes as attitudes toward tipping are shifting, and Americans are tipping less frequently than they did a year ago, according to a Bankrate survey from June.

Fifty percent of respondents said they always tipped their food delivery drivers in 2023, down from 57% in 2022 and 59% in 2021. Seven percent of respondents said they never tipped delivery drivers, and 18% said they do “only sometimes.”

The survey found that two-thirds of U.S. adults have a negative view of tipping — 30% think that “tipping culture has gotten out of control” and 41% believe that businesses should pay employees better rather than relying so much on tips.

  • CHRISTMAS: Nigerians May Pay More For Rice By December

As Christmas approaches, Nigerians are facing the prospect of paying N60,000 or more for a 50kg bag of rice. This is due to several factors, including the removal of fuel subsidies, banditry, flooding, and unstable foreign exchange.

A market survey by THE WHISTLER revealed that the price of rice has increased significantly in recent months. In Abuja, a 50kg bag of Nigerian rice now sells for N49,000, up from N34,000 three months ago. Foreign rice is even more expensive, selling for N55,000, up from N37,000 in July.

Rice dealers say that the high cost of transportation, banditry, ban on foreign rice, and flooding are all contributing to the rising price of the commodity. They also say that demand for rice is expected to increase in the lead-up to Christmas, which could further push up prices.

“I can’t say for sure what the price of a 50kg bag of rice will be by December, but if things continue to go high, it could go above N60,000,” said Yahaya, a rice dealer at the Kubwa market in Abuja.

Yahaya, a rice dealer at Kubwa Market

The high price of rice is a major concern for many Nigerians, who rely on it as a staple food. It is particularly concerning for low-income households, who may struggle to afford rice at all during the holiday season.

OTHER FOOD PRICES ARE ALSO RISING

The price of rice is not the only food item that has become more expensive in recent months. Other staples, such as beans and groundnut oil, have also seen significant price increases.

According to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the average price of a 50kg bag of rice increased by 28.32% between January and September 2023. The price of a 70kg bag of beans increased by 17.16% over the same period, while the price of 25 litres of groundnut oil increased by 20.87%.

The NBS report also showed that the overall inflation rate in Nigeria rose to 22.04% in September 2023, up from 17.01% in January. This means that the prices of most goods and services in Nigeria have increased significantly in recent months.

At the Wuse market, another rice dealer who identified himself as Umar Abubakar lamented the high cost of transportation, among others, as partly responsible for the high prices of rice in the country.

“Now that rice is like gold, some people no longer buy a bag of rice as they used to, what they do is to buy in Mudu. The country is hard, and even we the rice sellers find it hard to get rice, everything is now costly. Transportation has tripled, bandits won’t let farmers go to farm, borders are closed and we don’t produce enough.

“That’s why rice, beans, and other things keep going up, with 50kg of foreign rice going for N55,000 and our local Rice N49,000, how many people can afford it except for the rich?” Umar said.

He added that by December, people who can afford to buy a bag of rice may pay as much as “N57,000 and above.”

Umar, a rice dealer at Wuse Market

On his part, Ahmed a rice dealer at Dutse market gave a similar account.

“Foreign rice now is N55,000 it used to be like N37,000/N38,000 about four months ago, and Nigeria rice was N34,000 but now it’s N48,000,” he said.

Bags of Rice at Dutse Market

Our correspondent spoke to some rice dealers in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, who said a bushel (25kg) of rice now costs between N19,500 and N20,000, while 50kg of local rice can be purchased for N45,000 to N47,000 depending on the variety.

A rice merchant from Abakaliki, who gave his name as Gabriel, told THE WHISTLER that flooding and transportation are contributing factors.

“The scarcity is driven by flooding, subsidy removal, and increased demand. However, there is hope that prices will decrease once the new rice harvest begins.

“It may be challenging for economically disadvantaged individuals to afford rice in December due to rising costs of commodities, fuel, and exchange rates. A bushel of rice now costs between N19,500 and N20,000, while 50kg of local rice can be purchased for N45,000 to N47,000 depending on what type of grain you want.”

    IMPACT ON HOUSEHOLDS

The rising cost of food is having a significant impact on households in Nigeria. Many people are struggling to afford to feed their families, and some are having to cut back on essential items such as food and healthcare.

The government has taken some steps to help some Nigerians cope with the rising cost of living such as providing palliatives to vulnerable househoulds.

Others include increasing social safety nets, providing targeted subsidies to low-income households, and investing in agriculture to boost domestic production but the impact of these measures have not been felt by the masses.

  • Fact Check: Video shows 2020 protesters invited into someone’s home, not 2023 rioters breaking in

A video that shows people streaming up the stairs into someone’s home is being characterized in the comments of an Instagram post as “a scene right out of ‘Gangs of New York.’”

Except text above the video claims this shows “protests in Washington D.C.” on Oct. 28.

The protests were “hitting next level as rioters rush people’s houses,” the text says.

A couple of things are wrong here.

First, this video is from 2020 as demonstrators around the country protested the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

Second, WUSA-TV, the Washington, D.C., CBS News affiliate, reported June 4, 2020, that protesters weren’t breaking into someone’s home — they were invited inside.

Rahul Dubey confirmed to the station that he welcomed dozens of protesters inside on June 1, 2020, to wait out a 7p.m. curfew.

“If ‘Get in the house’ is not an indicator that one is welcome in a stranger’s home, I don’t know what else is,” Dubey said. “These were strangers, the invited guests, the community members and now we are family. I invited them in on Monday night, and they are welcome anytime.”

  • Warriors win vs. Thunder shows notable improvement in close games

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Warriors won their last two games at the buzzer.

Klay Thompson’s game-winning jumper against the Sacramento Kings gave them win No. 4 and No. 5 against the Thunder came courtesy of Steph Curry’s layup off the high backboard over seven-footer Chet Holmgren’s outstretched arm. It was a bucket initially waved off for Draymond Green’s basket interference, then overturned to give Curry and Golden State the winning points when a review revealed Oklahoma City’s Josh Giddey had pulled the net and Green only grabbed the rim.

Both thrilling. Both ugly, be it for poor shooting against the Kings or poor defense against the Thunder. But ugly wins are a beautiful sight for a Warriors team that would spiral when things got rough last season.

“We’ve been good so far, executing down the stretch,” Kevon Looney said. “Last year we struggled with that. But this year it’s something we focused on, winning in the margins. Everybody knows where the ball is going and where to be at.”

Coach Steve Kerr doesn’t like to talk about last year. He’d like to bury it as a blip in the franchises’s otherwise pristine record in contention years. That team that couldn’t win on the road, struggled to stay above .500 and got knocked out of the playoffs before the Finals for the first time in the Kerr era was just an anomaly.

“We need to leave last year in the rearview mirror,” Kerr said. “We have a decade of experience closing games, winning close games, winning championships. So last year was the exception, this year is the rule.”

Kerr’s annoyance is justified, and his intentions logical; a coach should want to block outside negativity and move on clear-headed. But internally, the Warriors aren’t letting last season slide. They’re using it as inspiration to get their stuff together with an extreme focus on correcting all the mistakes that bogged them down last year.

That means fixating on film to break down every turnover or bad foul on a shooter practices, or over-communicating situations during game stoppages. It means stopping practices when someone is fouled and starting over.

“It’s communication and the accountability part,” Looney said. “Not sweeping stuff under the rug. Last year, coming off a championship, it was more like, we’ll figure it out. But not actually calling out what actually happened. Now everybody is more focused.”

In games, closing games also means that everyone accepts a shifting closing lineup. In recent years, every game would ideally close with with Curry, Klay Thompson, Green, Andrew Wiggins and different fifth guy depending on matchup. Most of their six games have closed with Curry, Thompson and Green since he returned from injury, but the other two spots are flexible and Kerr has been proactive about using stoppages to move pieces around in the waning minutes.

Gary Payton II has closed a handful of games for his lock-down defense on scoring threats such as Malik Monk and ball-handlers such as Josh Giddey. Wiggins — who had a better game on the boards in OKC — has been out of the mix to close some games as he works to get into his rhythm, Moses Moody has been in as a certified shooting threat. Chris Paul is often in the closing minutes, too.

Who closes is mostly based on match-up, but having a merit-based process for who earns closing minutes keeps everyone on their toes.

“They know if they (mess up), they’re probably going to be yanked or be on film,” Looney said. “So when you are held accountable like that from the top — not just the bench guys — Steph, Draymond, Klay, everybody. It trickles down.

“You have to repeat every night and do the small things to stay on the court. We know we have a deep team. Steve is going to put out there so you know if you play well, you do what you’re supposed to do, you have a chance to close, and if you don’t you probably will sit down. That’s probably how it should be, and it’s working out for us.”

  • Do Not Throw Imo Into Political Crisis, IPOB Warns INEC

    INEC-Chairman-Mahmood-Yakubu-and-Imo-Gov-Hope-Uzodimma

Ahead of the November 11 gubernatorial election in Imo State, the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to be used as a tool to throw the state into political crisis.

In a statement signed by the group’s spokesman, Emma Powerful on Friday, the group said that inasmuch as it does not get itself involved in the political affairs in Nigeria, it will not be silent when things are about to go wrong.

Powerful accused the state governor, Hope Uzodinma of handpicking INEC officials with the sole aim of influencing the elections for his benefit.

He said: “The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu warns INEC not to throw Imo State into political crisis in the coming Imo State gubernatorial election.

“As much as IPOB does not get involved in the Nigeria political election, nevertheless, we are not going to be silent and watch the Nigeria Government use INEC officials to perpetuate evil in Imo State and by extension the South East region.”

He warned INEC officials to be careful about the election in order not to throw the state into crisis and prolonged suffering of the people for another four years.

Imo state in recent times had experienced security crises that have seen scores of security personnel and residents lose their lives and properties.
