  • Detroit Pistons Player Arrested And Cited After Punching Opponent Before Game

By Sara Smart and Jacob Lev, CNN

(CNN) — Detroit Pistons forward Isaiah Stewart was arrested and cited after an altercation with a Phoenix Suns player prior to Wednesday’s NBA game between the two teams.

Stewart was arrested for assault, issued a citation and released, according to a news release from the Phoenix Police Department, after punching Drew Eubanks.

Stewart, 22, is in his fourth season with the Pistons and Eubanks, 27, is a forward for the Suns.

Police say officers at Footprint Center in Phoenix were called to a fight between the two players around 4:45 p.m. local (6:45 p.m. ET) in the tunnel of the arena’s parking lot.

An argument between the two players escalated and led to Stewart punching Eubanks, leaving him with a minor injury, police say. The two men were separated by police.

“Detectives responded to investigate the incident and collect evidence,” Phoenix Police said, adding the investigation still remains active.

“The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, and acts of violence such as this are unacceptable,” a Suns spokesperson told CNN.

“We unequivocally support Drew and will continue to work with local law enforcement and the NBA.”

The Pistons added they are aware of the incident and “are in the process of gathering information about what happened and what provoked it, and responding to the NBA and local authorities.”

CNN has reached out to Stewart’s representation for comment on his arrest.

In 2021, Stewart was involved in an on-court altercation with superstar LeBron James who made contact with the Pistons player’s face. James was suspended for a game without pay for the first time in his career as a result.

Stewart was already ruled out of Wednesday’s game, which the Suns won 116-110, with a left ankle sprain.

After the game, Pistons head coach Monty Williams said he and other team officials had talked to Stewart, who gave them his side of the story. He also lambasted the Suns for the statement they released after the incident.

“I know the Suns put out a statement and said it was unprovoked,” Williams told reporters.

“I think that is irresponsible […] I think there’s a time for information to be gathered and then you can make a statement.”

Suns head coach Frank Vogel did not comment on the actual altercation but said “there is no place for anything like that in our game.”

  • Cohen predicts Trump will be convicted ‘on all charges’ in hush money case

Michael Cohen, a former personal lawyer for former President Trump, said he thinks that Trump will be convicted “on all charges” in his New York hush money case.

“I believe, based upon the information that I know, and based upon, not just the documentary evidence but the corroborating testimony from so many people, I believe that he will be found guilty on all charges,” Cohen said on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront.”

Cohen also said he thinks that the case will go on for about a month, calling it “very simple.”

“I would say, at best, it would be a four-week case,” Cohen said.

The former president’s lawyers failed to delay the hush money trial Thursday, with a New York judge setting a date for jury selection to start on March 25.

“Instead of being in South Carolina and other states campaigning, I’m stuck here. It’s an election interference case. Nobody’s ever seen anything like it in this country. It’s a disgrace, it’s a disgraceful situation actually,” Trump said after a hearing.

“And we’ll just have to figure it out. I’ll be here during the day, and I’ll be campaigning during the night.”

When Burnett brought up the fact that Cohen will have to testify in the hush money case, Cohen said he was under subpoena to do so and called testifying not “fun.”

“They get personal, they get nasty,” Cohen said.

The New York hush money case is one of the many legal troubles the former president is facing at the moment. He also faces two federal cases on efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his handling of classified documents, and another election subversion case in Georgia. However, the New York case is set to be Trump’s first-ever criminal trial.

  • Tinubu Appoints New CEOs For Federal Mortgage Bank, Housing Authority To Unlock Housing Opportunities For Nigerians

    Bola-Tinubu-

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday approved a shake-up in the leadership of key housing agencies, aiming to unlock affordable housing opportunities for millions of Nigerians and create jobs for the country’s youth.

This follows recent plans by the Tinubu administration to establish building material hubs in the six geopolitical zones to speed up urban development across the country.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu’s spokesman, announced on Thursday that his principal has reconstituted executive management teams at the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) and the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and appointed new chief executives and deputies at both organisations.

At the FMBN, Shehu Usman Osidi was named Managing Director and CEO. Osidi is a banking veteran with over 30 years experience, including 13 years in mortgage banking. He is an alumnus of top U.S. programs at Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania focused on housing finance.

Tinubu also elevated Ibidapo Odojukan, Muhammad Sani Abdu, and Chinenye Anosike to executive director roles overseeing finance, loans, and business development respectively.

At the FHA, former member of the House of Representatives, Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, was appointed Managing Director and CEO.

Ojo holds a master’s degree from the University of Greenwich in the UK and has over a decade of experience in housing and hospitality.

Ojo will be joined by Mathias Terwase Byuan, Umar Dankane Abdullahi, Oluremi Omowaiye, and Ezekiel Nya-Etok as executive directors covering housing finance, business development, project implementation, and estate services.

The changes come as Tinubu looks to dramatically boost affordable housing efforts through initiatives like establishing building material hubs nationwide, financing a new National Social Housing Fund for low-income groups, and reforming land access policies, said Ngelale.

According to presidential spokesperson Tinubu expects the new appointees to “hit the ground running” in delivering affordable homes to millions of Nigerians while creating millions of new jobs, especially for the nation’s youth.

He said, “In view of President Bola Tinubu’s historic approval of the establishment of Building Materials Hubs across all six of the nation’s geo-political zones; financing and establishment of a National Social Housing Fund for low income and vulnerable groups, and land reforms to collaboratively streamline access to land across all states and unlock nearly $300 billion of dead capital in the sector, his expectations are high that the above-named appointees will hit the ground running in the delivery of affordable housing for millions of Nigerians in need, while providing millions of new job opportunities for Nigeria’s talented youth population presently searching for work.”

  • Fact Check: The US homicide rate has declined, but Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy overstates effect of gun law

President Joe Biden’s allies are countering claims that his age is hurting his ability to govern. Sen. Chris Murphy said the president’s acuity helped create a law that cut deadly gun violence.

“I worked with (Biden) on the bipartisan gun bill. He was involved in every step of that process,” Murphy, D-Conn., said Feb. 11 on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “And what has happened since we passed that bill? A 12% reduction in urban homicides in this country.”

Murphy is referring to the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that Biden signed into law in June 2022 after mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas. The legislation combined gun safety provisions with mental health and school security resources and marked the first gun control measure from Congress in nearly three decades.

Murphy’s press office pointed us to homicide statistics that largely match his figures. It also cited a speech Murphy gave on the House floor in which he repeated the number and said that there had been a 10% reduction in gun injuries and deaths in the last year, thanks to the law.

Criminologists and gun policy experts confirmed that U.S. homicides have dropped 10% to 12% over the last year — the lion’s share of them from guns. But the decline represents a reduction from big spikes in violent crime at the COVID-19 pandemic’s apex and experts told us that change likely relates several factors, not one law alone.

Violent crime is down from pandemic-era peak

The FBI won’t release its 2023 national crime statistics until the fall, but experts said preliminary data matches up with Murphy’s statistic. “Urban” homicides, as he put it, are homicides committed in densely populated cities where crime is typically more concentrated.

Jeff Asher, a crime data analyst and co-founder of AH Datalytics, estimated that homicides in 2023 were down around 12% compared with 2022 in 211 cities with available data. Seventy-one percent of the cities evaluated saw a decline. If the projected decline bears out in the FBI data, Asher said, it would represent one of the largest — if not the largest — single-year homicide drop since U.S. crime recordkeeping began.

Murphy referred to the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act as a “gun” bill, and although his statistic covered all urban homicides, the vast majority of homicides in the U.S. involve firearms — about 81% in 2021, according to Pew Research Center.

The Gun Violence Archive, an independent nonprofit, estimated that deaths and injuries from gun violence declined 8% to 10% in 2023 compared with 2022.

Asher also said that a drop in homicides overall generally represents a comparable drop in gun homicides.

“Guns account for 80-90% of murders in most cities and 77% nationally in 2022, so most of the changes in murder levels are attributable to changes in gun violence,” he wrote in an email. “I’d guess that whatever percent decline we see in 2023 was almost exclusively driven by guns. In New Orleans, for example, there were 65 fewer fatal shooting incidents in 2023 than 2022 and one less non-gun homicide incident.”

In its 2023 analysis, the Council on Criminal Justice, a nonpartisan think tank, found that the number of homicides in the 32 cities it studied was 10% lower than the previous year. The decline follows the group’s 2022 analysis, which found that homicide counts for that year were 4% lower than in 2021.

These declines come with a huge caveat: They represent drops from big COVID-19-era violent crime spikes in 2020 and 2021. Overall, preliminary data shows the United States’ 2023 homicide rate is expected to be about 18% higher than it was in 2019.

What the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act did

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act provided $750 million to help states implement crisis intervention programs and “red flag laws” designed to help temporarily take firearms from people if they pose a danger to themselves or others. The act also closed domestic violence loopholes, improved background checks, made gun trafficking illegal and outlawed what is known as “straw purchases,” when someone buys a gun on someone else’s behalf. It also increased funding for mental health and school safety services.

Because of the legislation, the Justice Department has so far brought gun trafficking charges against more than 200 people, The Washington Post reported in December; about 80 were charged with violating the law’s straw purchase provision. The law has also led to law enforcement seizing more than 1,300 guns from suspected gun traffickers between mid-July 2022 and late October 2023, according to a report by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

President Joe Biden has also touted the law’s impact in a Jan. 4 press release, saying the enhanced background checks enacted by the legislation led to the denial of “more than 500 illegal gun purchases by people under 21 years old.”

Several factors likely contributed to the decline, experts say

Criminologists and data analysts told us that pinpointing the precise reasons national crime data changes is challenging at best and impossible at worst. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act likely helped drive down the numbers, they said, but should not be credited as the predominant driver.

“There are many theories about what is driving these changes, but I have not seen research that explains them convincingly, and I have seen no research, convincing or otherwise, that has attempted to estimate the effect of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on 2023 urban homicides,” Andrew Morral, senior behavioral scientist at the Rand Corp., a nonpartisan think tank, and director of the National Collaborative on Gun Violence Research, told PolitiFact.

“Could it have had the effect of reducing urban homicides? Yes,” Morral wrote in an email. “Are there other factors likely influencing recent declines in homicide rates? Very likely.”

Criminologists said the declines in the last two years likely relate to a confluence of factors, including the fading tensions surrounding George Floyd’s murder by police and the easing of the pandemic’s social disruptions, restrictions and anxieties. Cities also aggressively undertook urgent violence-reduction strategies to respond to homicide spikes, experts said.

Experts also noted that the decline in homicides is uneven throughout the country, and some cities have experienced more homicides, not less.

Alex Piquero, a criminology professor at the University of Miami and former director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics, pointed to what he described as “staggering increases” in 2023 homicides in Washington, D.C., Memphis, Tennessee, and Oakland, California.

“If this law is causing gun homicides to come down, then what happened in these cities? If national legislation is causing the decline, it should be doing it everywhere but it’s not, Piquero said. “Could what those monies were used for have influenced some of the trends? Maybe, but it’s virtually impossible to measure a national aggregate change and some law and how it deals with things at the local level.”

Still, the law’s advocates contend that it enables the federal government to identify and charge the most violent offenders, thereby supporting local law enforcement efforts to reduce homicides.

    Our ruling

Murphy said the Bipartisan Safer in Communities Act led to 12% reduction in urban homicides in 2023.

Preliminary data shows urban homicides across the country decreased about 12% in 2023 compared with a year earlier.

But that data ignores that this one-year decline came after violent crime spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, preliminary data shows the United States’ 2023 homicide rate is expected to be about 18% higher than it was in 2019, pre-pandemic.

Criminologists said the law likely helped drive down the figures in 2023, but they added that the  drop likely relates to a confluence of factors, including the easing of the pandemic’s social disruptions and the way cities responded to homicide spikes.

Murphy’s claim is partly accurate but leaves out important information. We rate it Half True.

  • CDC Isolation Guidelines For Covid-19 Haven’t Changed Yet. Here’s What You Need To Know

There are no changes to the CDC’s Covid-19 isolation guidelines to announce “at this time,” the agency said Tuesday. (Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

    By Amanda Musa, CNN

(CNN) — California and Oregon recently became the first states to break with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how long a person infected with Covid-19 should isolate, saying that people who test positive are no longer expected to isolate for at least five days — and those without symptoms don’t have to isolate at all.

CDC is considering a shift to its Covid-19 isolation guidance to say that people no longer need to isolate once they have been fever-free for 24 hours and their symptoms are mild or improving, according to the Washington Post.

In a statement Tuesday, the agency told CNN that there were no changes to announce at this time.

“We will continue to make decisions based on the best evidence and science to keep communities healthy and safe,” spokesperson Dave Daigle said.

Wastewater surveillance data published by the CDC suggests that Covid-19 is still circulating at high levels across the US, and experts emphasize that until any new recommendations are announced, most people should continue to follow the CDC’s current guidance: isolating for at least five days after you test positive for Covid-19 then wearing a mask until at least 10 days after a positive test. If you’re not fever-free for 24-hours without taking fever-reducing medications at day five, you should isolate longer.

    Some states shift isolation guidelines

Even if the CDC changes its guidance, state health departments can still implement their own.

People who test positive for Covid-19 in California and Oregon are no longer expected to isolate for a set period of time. Those without symptoms don’t have to isolate at all, and those with symptoms can return to school or work once their symptoms are improving and they’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours, according to the state policies.

“Most school systems and most places of employment will go along with whatever the state is recommending,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, who co-directs the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital. “You’re more or less obligated for to follow that guideline.”

Health officials in those states say the changes to their isolation guidelines reflect policy that’s evolving along with the pandemic. Both California and Oregon still encourage people who test positive to wear a mask around others for at least 10 days.

Dr. Carlos del Rio, a professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Emory University School of Medicine, said the CDC may take a similar step as evidence shows infections becoming milder.

The CDC notes that “infections are causing severe disease less frequently than earlier in the pandemic.”

Changes to CDC’s guidance could bring Covid-19 in line with other respiratory viruses, such as flu and RSV.

“We need to start ending Covid exceptionalism and incorporate Covid into our respiratory viruses,” del Rio said. “At the end of the day, there’s going to be a similar approach to all these viruses.”

Some infectious disease experts also believe that a change would better align with how many Americans are already treating the virus.

“Currently, many of our citizens are no longer testing for Covid-19 and are not actively isolating,” said Dr. Clay Marsh, West Virginia’s Covid-19 czar. “With the caveat of the risk of long Covid and the potential for mortality in the elderly and immunocompromised, the future guidance by CDC meets the standard we are seeing.”

West Virginia currently recommends that people who’ve tested positive for Covid isolate for at least five days, according to the state’s Department of Health.

Hotez isn’t a fan of ending isolation for people who don’t have symptoms, particularly because Covid-19 is generally more severe than the flu and because asymptomatic Covid-19 cases are more common.

He says he would like to see the CDC recommend using a home test after you have gone 24 hours without a fever.

“If you have an antigen test and if you’re negative, then you can leave isolation,” he proposed. If you test positive, you would keep isolating until you got a negative test.

“Home antigen tests give you an idea of how much virus you’re actually shedding,” he said. “That’s the kind of thing the CDC needs to look at.”

But in order to make a proper recommendation, Hotez says, the CDC would need to gather data on how many people test positive for Covid-19 after a 24-hour period with no fever.

Experts say Covid-19 vaccinations — which are helpful in preventing the spread of the virus as well as severe illness or death — could also lessen the need for isolation if they were utilized more.

“You’re isolating because you’re worried that you’re shedding virus,” Hotez said. “People forget that vaccinations can have a big effect on reducing the amount of virus shedding.”

The latest Covid-19 shot was rolled out in September. It’s a monovalent vaccine formulated to target newer variants of the virus that are currently circulating.

But not enough Americans are getting the updated vaccine, Hotez and del Rio say, exposing older adults and people with weakened immune systems to severe infection.

“I think we really need to focus on what we can do to prevent cases and what we can do to prevent severe disease,” del Rio said.

    What’s the CDC’s current guidance?

For now, the agency continues to recommend isolating for at least five days after you test positive for Covid-19, while keeping a distance from other people in your household. This means staying home from school and work for about a week.

If your symptoms are improving and you are fever-free for 24 hours without taking any fever-reducing medications like acetaminophen, you can end isolation on day five, the CDC says. If your symptoms are not improving by day five, continue to isolate until you feel better, and your fever is gone.

After ending isolation, you should continue to wear a high-quality mask around other people until at least 10 days after the positive test, according to the agency. You may stop wearing a mask earlier if you have two negative tests 48 hours apart.

If you had shortness of breath or trouble breathing, isolate for at least 10 days, the CDC says. The same applies to people who were hospitalized or who have a weakened immune system; these patients should talk to their doctor before ending isolation.

CNN’s Jamie Gumbrecht, Brenda Goodman, Deidre McPhillips and Meg Tirrell contributed to this report.

The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma has directed all former appointees to immediately return all official government vehicles and properties in their custody.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Governor, Oguwike Nwachuku on Thursday.

The governor mandated the Managing Director of Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), Hon Chief Charles Orie to oversee the recovery of the vehicles and official government properties assigned to former appointees through any lawful means possible.

The statement reads in parts: “This directive affects all former Principal Officers to the Governor, all former Commissioners, all Special Advisers, all General Managers of Agencies of Government, among others.

“Orie was further urged to ensure that no former political appointee, no matter how highly placed, refuses to surrender his or her official vehicles.

“On January 16, 2024, when Governor Uzodimma dissolved his expanded Executive Council, he had directed that the Commissioners should hand over their official vehicles to the Permanent Secretaries in their ministries while the Special Advisers should submit their official vehicles at the Office of the Chief of Staff.

“While some former political appointees complied with the directives, others are yet to do so, raising concerns they may have ulterior motives.

“Poised to ensure that government directives are respected by all and sundry, Governor Uzodimma has mandated Orie to use all means lawful to extract compliance from the former appointees.

“Those Governor Uzodimma expects Chief Orie to take custody and inventory of the vehicles assigned to them as former appointees are his former principal officers, his former Commissioners, his former Special Advisers, former General Managers of Agencies of Government, among others.

“Compliance is said to be immediate and non-negotiable.”

Recall the governor in January dissolved his cabinet which includes the Expanded Executive Council Members, Commissioners, Special Advisers, Senior Special Advisers and Sole Administrators of the 27 Local Government Area of the state

  • Fact Check: Deceptive audio edits exaggerate sounds of Biden hecklers in Pennsylvania

Not everyone who showed up to greet President Joe Biden in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in January was pleased to see him. But a deceptively edited video shared on social media made it sound like the crowd was overwhelmingly aggressive and insulting.

The Instagram video showed Biden walking into a bike shop as protestors loudly chanted, “F— Joe Biden.” Text over the video read, “Joe’s warm welcome to Allentown, Pa.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The Daily Mail shared the same video on its website with a caption misspelling “Allentown” that said, “US president Joe Biden was met with cheers, boos, and one man shouting ‘loser!’ on his visit to stores in Allenstown, Pennsylvania to tout economic progress.”

The video’s audio is different from the one in the Instagram video. Some in the crowd cheered as Biden walked into the shop. One person yelled, “Loser!” But no one shouted the expletive-laced chant.

Forbes Breaking News shared the unedited video on its YouTube channel with the title, “JUST IN: Man Yells ‘Loser!’ at Biden During His Visit To Allentown, Pennsylvania.”

A Jan. 12 New York Post article about the incident said that one person shouted, “Go home, Joe!” and the Daily Mail reported that protestors calling for a ceasefire in Gaza lined up by Biden’s motorcade in Allentown and called him “genocide Joe.”

But they did not chant the “F” word at him, so we rate the claim that protestors yelled “F— Joe Biden” as the president arrived in Allentown, Pennsylvania, False.
