  • Steph Curry’s 11th All-Star weekend different from previous 10

SAN FRANCISCO — Steph Curry’s experience in the NBA’s All-Star festivities this weekend will be different than any of his previous 10 appearances.

For Sunday’s exhibition classic in Indianapolis, Curry, 35, will be playing off the bench as a reserve for the first time as part of a deep Western Conference squad. Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will start as the backcourt duo this year.

“Two guys that are playing amazing this year with Luka and Shai,” Curry said after the teams were announced. “So, been doing this for a very long time, (and) the fact that it’s a talking point that I’m not (a starter) after nine healthy years — those two guys are playing amazing, they deserve it. Hopefully I’m there in Indiana in whatever capacity, but to still be doing it at this stage is always a challenge. You don’t ever take for granted how hard it is to be recognized in that way every year.”

Another tweak for Curry: He won’t participate in the traditional 3-point contest — a competition he won in 2021 and 2015 — but instead go head-to-head with WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu in a 3-point duel that is the first of its kind.

Ionescu, a Walnut Creek native out of Miramonte High School, set a 3-point contest record at last summer’s WNBA All-Star contest by scoring 37 of a possible 40 points to break Curry’s previous record of 31 set in 2021. Ionescu at one point hit 20 shots in a row.

“You’re just shooting without even thinking. Kind of unconscious to be honest,” Ionescu said on a videoconference call on Tuesday. “Hopefully I can make that many in a row at least one more time — coming up this weekend.”

Ionescu, 26, confirmed that she will shoot from the NBA line and reflected on how this inaugural competition was dreamt up in the first place. After Ionescu set the record, one of her first calls was to Curry — one of only a small group of people who can relate to her accomplishment. The idea of a head-to-head competition was formulated from there. Curry challenged Ionescu on social media and, last month, Curry brought it up as a possibility in a mic’d up segment during a game.

“Fast-forward seven months later and we’re having this moment and reshaping how people think about competition in general,” Curry said on the call. “You’ve got kids that are in gyms — boys and girls playing, shooting, playing pickup, whatever the case is — reimagining what competition really looks like at the same time. This can kind of be a moment for that.”

  • Inspiring Eco-Consciousness Through Paper Towel Roll Crafts

    Parenting Today

Using paper towel rolls for crafts is a budget-friendly option that contributes to environmental sustainability. Repurposing these rolls helps reduce waste and minimizes the demand for new materials. It provides an excellent opportunity to teach kids about recycling and upcycling, instilling a sense of environmental responsibility from an early age.

Paper towel rolls are also versatile and readily available, making them an accessible crafting material. You can easily transform them into various shapes, sizes, and forms, fostering creativity and imaginative play. By encouraging children to see the potential in everyday items like paper towel rolls, we stimulate their artistic abilities and promote a mindset of resourcefulness and eco-consciousness. So, the next time you reach for a paper towel roll, think beyond its initial use — it might just be the starting point for a world of imaginative crafting possibilities!

Here’s a list of fun and unique paper towel roll crafts for kids of all ages.

    Paper Towel Roll Animals

The cylindrical shape of the roll serves as an excellent starting point for various animals, from long-bodied creatures like snakes to short and stout animals like elephants. The material’s flexibility allows for easy bending, cutting, and shaping, enabling children to experiment with different forms.

    • Butterflies and Bugs. Use the paper towel roll as the body of your child’s favorite bug. Add wings, antennae, and colorful patterns to your butterfly, ladybug, bee, or other creature.
    • Wild Animals. You can also turn paper towel rolls into lions, monkeys, elephants, crocodiles, and more with supplies like paint, scissors, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners.
    • Animal Puppets. Turn paper towel rolls into various animals by adding features like ears, eyes, and mouths made from colored paper. Kids can use them as puppets by slipping their fingers inside or attaching marionette strings.

    Paper Towel Roll Vehicles

The paper towel roll’s shape and length provide a natural framework for various vehicles, including cars, trucks, trains, and even rockets. Crafting vehicles from paper towel rolls introduces engineering and design concepts while encouraging creative play. It’s a hands-on way for children to explore the basics of form and function while repurposing everyday items.

    • Race Cars. Color, paint, or decorate a paper towel roll to resemble a race car. Use stickers or markers to create car details. Then, add four cut-out circles or bottle caps to the bottom for the wheels.
    • Train Cars. Like with the cars, kids will decorate the paper towel roll and attach wheels. Keep the train cars separate or tie them together with string. Then, they can add additional features, such as smoke stacks with cotton balls to represent the smoke.
    • Rocket Ship. Decorate the paper towel roll to look like a rocket ship using paint, foil, or colored paper. Add a cone-shaped top. For the final touch, attach red and yellow ribbons or thinly cut streamers to the bottom for the flames.

Useable Items from Paper Towel Rolls

Use the paper towel’s tube shape and sturdy structure as a reliable foundation for crafting functional items. These practical crafts often require problem-solving as children learn how to transform materials into something useful. Completing a craft that serves a purpose instills a sense of accomplishment in children and boosts their confidence and self-esteem.

    • Pencil Holder. Decorate the outside of the paper towel roll, attach a bottom, and use it as a pencil holder.
    • Desk Organizer. Go beyond a single tube to create a desk or art supply organizer. Connect several paper towel rolls vertically and secure them with glue or tape. Decorate the outside and use them to store pens, pencils, markers, paintbrushes, and other supplies.
    • Napkin Rings. Cut the paper towel roll into smaller sections. Then, decorate with paint, markers, washi tape, or colored paper to match a theme or season. Embellish with ribbons, flowers, pinecones, or other outdoor items. It’s especially fun to do for holiday gatherings or birthday parties.

Use the Rolls to Create Pieces of Art

Paper towel rolls can also be used as artistic tools to create elaborate designs and allow children to explore their creativity.

    • Fireworks Painting. Cut fringes out of one side of the roll. Dip the ends in different colored paints and stamp them on paper to create a firework effect.
    • Artwork. Paper towel roll rings can be painted and shaped into wreaths, wall art, flowers, and more.

Whatever paper towel craft you choose, remember to emphasize the importance of reusing materials to reduce waste and help the environment while having fun with these creative and eco-friendly crafts! Then, sit back as your kids use their imagination and dive into hours of play with their newly made toys or useful items.

  • White House says ‘no evidence’ Russia planning to use emerging satellite weapon

President Biden said Friday that there is “no evidence” that Russia has decided to use its emerging satellite weapon, just days after worries about a “serious national security threat” circulated in Washington.

The White House confirmed that U.S. intelligence officials have information that indicates Russia has gained a satellite weapon capability but it is not yet operational.

In remarks to reporters Friday about the deal of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s death, Biden said “there is no evidence that they have made a decision to go forward with doing anything in space either.”

“So, what we found out: There was a capacity to launch a system into space that could theoretically do something that was damaging. Hadn’t happened yet,” Biden said, adding that he hopes it won’t happen.

The news of Russia’s capability broke earlier this week after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) released a cryptic call for Biden to declassify information about the security threat and allow for public discussion about U.S. response.

Turner’s message caused fear, but leaders like ranking member on the panel Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said people should not panic and there is no need for public alarm.

White House national security communications adviser John Kirby said this week that the Biden administration was monitoring the situation and said while Russia’s “anti-satellite” capability is “troubling,” there is no immediate threat to safety.

He said the White House plans to “engage directly” with the Russians about the issue, but as of Thursday they had not made contact with officials.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is in Germany for the Munich Security Conference, emphasized to other world leaders that “the pursuit of this capability should be a matter of concern,” a person traveling with him told The Associated Press.

The news comes as Russia continues its war against Ukraine and the battle nears the two-year anniversary.

The police, in a statement by spokesman of the command, DSP Abutu Sunday, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) during an operation led by its commander, CSP. Ogundola Marcus.

His words, “On 8/02/2024 at about 1300hrs, the Command Rapid Response Squad (RRS) received a credible tip-off that a gang of armed men had invaded farmland at Eda-Oniyo-Ekiti and were planning to kidnap some Expatriates in Dairy Farmland, Ikun-Ekiti.

“Upon receipt of the information, a team of RRS operatives swung into action and arrested one Abubarkar Aliyu a.k.a SMALLIE who was on a mission to spy on the actual location of the Expatriates.

“After the arrest of Abubakar Aliyu a.k.a Smallie, the leader of the kidnapping gang identified as one Sumo Karami sent two (2) vigilante members, one Saliu Ibrahim and one Umaru Saliu, to secure the bail of the arrested gang member from Police custody.”

He added that, “two vigilante members were arrested and they led the RRS operatives to Oro-Ago town where one Mohammed Bashiru, the leader of Miyetti Allah vigilante in Oro-Ago, Kwara State, was arrested.

“During interrogation, Mohammed Bashiru revealed that he is a relative of Sumo Karami who is a leader of a dreaded kidnapping gang and that Abubakar Aliyu a.k.a SMALLIE is one of his gang members who have been terrorising and kidnapping innocent citizens with AK47 rifles and other dangerous weapons. • Fact Check: Neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump have dropped out of the 2024 presidential race

The field of candidates vying for the nation’s highest office in 2024 is shrinking. Of 20 Republican, Democratic and independent candidates who had been pursuing the parties’ nominations in 2024, only eight remain.

But the race hasn’t narrowed quite as dramatically as one Feb. 15 social media post suggested.

“2024 Presidential Candidate Abruptly DROPS OUT — ‘I’m Done,’” read text above pictures of the two leading candidates: incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, the current Republican front-runner.

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

People who encountered the post might have believed Biden or Trump dropped out of the race. That’s False.

    (Screenshot from Facebook.)

Both Trump and Biden were still running for president when the post was published Feb. 15, and that remained true when this article was published Feb. 16.

On Feb. 14, Trump held a campaign rally in South Carolina, 10 days ahead of the state’s Republican primary. Biden’s reelection campaign released a new campaign ad Feb. 16.

The Facebook user who posted the image shared a link in the comments to a story on the website Conservative Brief. The preview for that link seemed to again claim that one of the leading candidates had exited the race.

    (Screenshot from Facebook)

Clicking the link showed the article was about self-help author Marianne Williamson, who had been running for president as a Democrat. “Marianne Williamson has suspended her 2024 presidential campaign, leaving President Joe Biden with one challenger in the Democratic primary,” the article read. (The remaining Biden challenger is Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn.)

Williamson said Feb. 7 she was suspending her campaign.

We rate the claim that Biden or Trump dropped out of the race False.

  • Posts Make Unfounded Claim About Swift and Kelce’s Post-Election Plans

Para leer en español, vea esta traducción de Google Translate.

    Quick Take

Neither Taylor Swift nor Travis Kelce has endorsed a candidate in the 2024 presidential race as of Feb. 16. But social media posts are making the unfounded claim that the pair said they plan to leave the U.S. if former President Donald Trump wins the 2024 election.

    Full Story

The romance between pop star Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce has moved beyond the realms of music and sports and has become a flash point in the world of politics.

The singer-songwriter endorsed the Democratic presidential ticket of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020, as we’ve written before, and the Biden campaign is hoping for Swift’s support again in the 2024 election.

Kelce, the tight end for the champion Kansas City Chiefs, made his own endorsement in 2023 — for getting COVID-19 and flu vaccinations — by appearing in a Pfizer television ad. His support for getting the COVID-19 vaccine drew a backlash from those opposed to the vaccines, including a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, from commentator Tomi Lahren, who asked, “Is this what happens when you date Taylor Swift?”

Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce embraces girlfriend and singer Taylor Swift following the team’s victory at Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Photo by Erick W. Rasco/Sports Illustrated via Getty Images.

As of Feb. 16, neither Swift nor Kelce has made any public political endorsements in the 2024 presidential race.

However, a few days after the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11, posts on social media made the unfounded claim, “Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce say they will leave the United States if Donald Trump becomes President in 2024.”

A Facebook post said, “So now Taylor Swift and her violent boyfriend will leave the country if Trump is re-elected, good.”

The social media posts provide no source for the claim, and we could find no public statements from the performer or the football player about their plans if former President Donald Trump were to win the election in November.

It’s worth noting that Kelce’s current four-year, $57.25 million contract with the Chiefs runs through 2025.

As for Swift, she has an estimated $150 million invested in eight homes in four states in the U.S., according to Elle Decor.

So there is no evidence either is making plans for moving out of the U.S. anytime soon.

  • How To Adopt A Positive Mindset Towards Aging

Active Aging Presented by Public Health Seattle-King County

Many things change about your daily life after retirement, and some adjustments may be complex. If you can adopt a positive thinking approach to this stage of life, however, you can learn to find new enjoyment and increase your chances of living a long, healthy life at the same time.

    What is Positive Thinking?

Positive thinking involves seeing your life in a positive light. You are optimistic about overcoming challenges and can find moments of joy and hope in your daily life. Many sources point out an important caveat: positive thinking does not mean you overlook obstacles or refuse to confront difficulties. Rather, you choose to see all aspects of reality in a way that focuses productively on the good rather than dwelling unproductively on the negatives. Positive thinking can be an overall approach to life or a mindset you adopt situationally.

    When Positivity Matters: Mental Health

Whether you adopt positive thinking as a holistic lifestyle or as a way to work through obstacles, the research is clear: a positive mindset improves mental health. One key to this connection lies in the fact that positive thinking is not a façade that you present to others. Positive thinkers actually believe good things about themselves, others, and their current situation. This positive approach can reduce your stress hormones and limit the physical and emotional toll that difficulties take. As a result, you’re more resilient and successful in overcoming challenges.

    Mental Health as You Age

Overall wellness is a critical factor in living a long life, and that includes mental health. According to the National Institute on Aging, older adults are at an increased risk for social isolation, depression, anxiety, and other stress-related conditions. Taking care of your mental health can mean a longer, happier life.

The Power of Thinking Positively About Aging

The connection between your mindset and health becomes even more critical as you age. Recently, many researchers have pointed out the link between healthy aging and positive thinking. In fact, some believe viewing aging in a positive light can add more years to your life than other interventions, such as exercise or smoking cessation.

    Photo: moodboard via 123RF

Key Steps to a Positive Mindset

The great news is that positive thinking is a technique anyone can learn to adopt at any time. It doesn’t require specific tools or interventions, and starting small is the best way to turn this approach into a lifelong habit.

    Get Curious About Your Thoughts

Many of us aren’t aware that negative self-talk or pessimistic thinking plays a big part in our internal monologue. If you’re committed to adopting positive thinking habits, the first step is to get curious about your current thoughts. Use a notebook to track what your responses are to obstacles or unexpected situations over the course of several weeks. How many are positive? What do the negative thoughts entail? How do you feel after you’ve had a positive thought versus a negative one? Answering these questions for yourself can help you find patterns and opportunities for employing more positive thinking in the future.

    Reframe Negatives

It’s impossible to avoid negative thinking entirely, and that’s not the actual goal of adopting a positive thinking mindset. Your objective is to reframe negative thoughts into more productive positive outlooks. When you catch yourself using a negative approach or getting stuck in pessimistic spirals, pause and try to separate each idea into its own phrase. Work to reframe each idea, one at a time, into something more positive in the moment. Practicing this activity will make this habit more second nature over time.

For example: Instead of “I’m always late to meet my friends. I bet they’re so annoyed and don’t want to see me at all,” try “Today I noticed I spent more time than I had planned on breakfast. I’ll factor that in for future plans, and I know my friends will help support me as I improve.”

    Focus on Gratitude

Gratitude journals are now a mainstream practice for all ages, and with good reason. When you focus on finding small things that bring you joy or deserve your thanks, it becomes easier to adjust your thinking towards a positive mindset. Set a time each day to complete your daily gratitude practice, and you’ll quickly notice how much easier it becomes to be optimistic in your everyday life.

Surround Yourself with a Positive Community

Having a positive outlook doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Staying optimistic in a sea of doubt, disbelief, and pessimism can be difficult. Surrounding yourself with others who want to adopt a positive mindset will make it easier for you to do the same.

It’s never too early (or too late!) to adopt a positive mindset in your life, especially regarding the aging process.

  • Eric Trump slams ‘horribly sad’ fraud ruling: ‘This is not the state that we grew up in’

Eric Trump slammed the nearly $355 million fine levied on his father, former President Trump, by New York Judge Arthur Engoron Friday in the civil fraud trial, calling it “horribly sad.”

“My father built a skyline of New York City. And this is the thanks he gets for doing absolutely nothing wrong, not a dollar of financial loss? The exact opposite, hundreds of millions of dollars in financial gain,” the younger Trump said Friday evening on Fox News’s “The Ingraham Angle.”

“Every single witness testified we have nothing to do with this. They went in, witness after witness, this is not what they did in the company. It didn’t matter to this guy. You know, we were trophies on a wall for this guy,” he added. “This is the state of New York.”

Eric Trump’s rebuke of the Empire State comes hours after the former president was ordered to pay more than $355 million for conspiring to inflate and deflate his net worth to receive tax and insurance benefits. Engoron had already found Trump, and his top executives — including Eric Trump and his oldest son Donald Trump Jr., who serve as executive vice presidents of the Trump Organization — liable for fraud before the months-long trial began.

The verdict is less than the $370 million that Attorney General Letitia James (D) requested. However, once interest is applied, the office said the fine could reach about $450 million.

Both of Trump’s adult sons were ordered to pay more than $4 million each and barred from serving in top business roles in the state for up to two years. The former president was banned for three years.

Eric Trump railed against the state’s leadership, echoing his father’s claim that the lawsuit was political from the start.

“I caution anybody. I caution anybody even thinking about moving to New York to just be careful. This is not the state that my father grew up in. This is not the state that we grew up in,” he told guest host Jeanine Pirro. “This is the demise of a politically weaponized system. And it’s horribly sad.”

“New York is a hopeless place at this point. It’s so sad. This judge ruled against my father before we even went to trial. He ruled against our entire family. It was a setup from the very beginning,” he added. “This was never supposed to be in that court. It was supposed to be in the commercial division. They would never allow it to get there.”

The younger Trump also vowed to appeal the decision, calling it “egregious.”

“I promise you we’re going to get it overturned,” he said.
