  • San Francisco Appoints First Noncitizen to Sit on the City’s Elections Commission

Chinese immigrant Kelly Wong, who has only been in the U.S. since 2019, will oversee elections in San Francisco despite not being eligible to vote herself.

San Francisco has appointed its first non-citizen, who immigrated to the U.S. from China in 2019, to serve on its Department of Elections.

But Kelly Wong, the newest member of the San Francisco Elections Commission, a seven-member civilian body that oversees and creates policy for the city’s Department of Elections, is not legally allowed to vote.

Wong, a self-described “immigrant rights community advocate” who also promotes “equity and inclusion”, was appointed to the commission on Wednesday.

Wong said she hopes her appointment will bring hope to other immigrants in San Francisco.

“There are always voices inside my head. Like, ‘You can’t do it. You’re not competent. You’re an immigrant. This is not your country.’ That’s not true,” said Wong, who immigrated to the U.S. from Hong Kong to pursue graduate studies. “If I can do it, you can do it.”

    From KQED:

Wong’s appointment is the result of a 2020 voter-approved measure that removed the citizenship requirement to serve on San Francisco boards, commissions and advisory bodies. Each of the commission’s seven members is appointed by a different city official, such as the mayor, city attorney or district attorney. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to appoint Wong.

Drawing on her lived experience, Wong said she wants to increase engagement among the city’s immigrant and non-English speaking communities. Anyone who has delved into San Francisco’s ballot knows it can be just as confusing for native English speakers to decipher the myriad propositions, their arguments, and the city’s ranked-choice voting system.

“Even though I’m fluent in English, I still encounter challenges in navigating a new system, let alone participating in political conversation and activities,” Wong said in an interview with KQED before Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony.

One of Wong’s priorities is to ensure that voter materials are translated in a way that people can understand – she pointed out, for example, that there isn’t an equivalent term for the word “reparations” in Cantonese or Mandarin.

The left putting a noncitizen from China — America’s greatest geopolitical adversary — who is not eligible to vote in charge of elections is just another example of the policy insanity coming out of blue cities.

  • When will Alyssa Nakken rejoin SF Giants staff after pregnancy?

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Alyssa Nakken is more than just the first uniformed female staff member in major-league history. After giving birth to her first child last month, the trailblazing San Francisco Giants assistant coach is now baseball’s first mom, too.

It was a mystery how Nakken’s pregnancy would affect her status with the team this spring, but manager Bob Melvin provided an update Saturday.

“She may be here for a day or two,” Melvin said. “But I think she’s going to take her whole leave consecutively, is my understanding.”

  • 7 Winter Activities The Whole Family Will Enjoy

    Parenting Today

When the holidays have passed, you’ll have more time to spend relaxing and adventuring with your family. Spending time together outdoors is a great way to bond, even in the winter!

If your area is cold and snowy, make sure to wear appropriate winter gear when you head outside—a layer of moisture-wicking fabric and waterproof boots make all the difference! Here are seven great family-friendly activities to try this season.

Soak in a (Natural) Hot Spring

Soaking in hot water with cool air all around is a remarkably peaceful experience. If you live in the western part of the country, there are many natural hot springs within driving distance. If you aren’t lucky enough to be close to one, contact local spas and resorts to see if they have an artificial “hot springs experience” set up outdoors. Kids as young as age 4 can safely soak in hot springs with adult supervision, so plan a special family adventure. You can often find other fun experiences nearby, including snowshoeing/ice fishing in colder areas and beautiful hikes in warmer climates.

    Host a Bonfire Block Party

When the nights get dark so much earlier, it can be challenging to spend time out in the neighborhood connecting with other families. Organize a bonfire block party to reconnect, and let your kids invite their friends, too! Make sure to check any local ordinances, but most areas at least allow fire pits. Set up some camp chairs, make hot cocoa, and provide blankets if it’s extra cold. Add a portable speaker with a fun playlist, and you’ve got the perfect winter-evening party!

Spend the Night in a Cabin

Colder temperatures and wet/snowy weather don’t mean you have to hole up at home all season! Find a cabin close to home and book it for a weekend family getaway. You can explore rustic options that only use wood fires for heat or something more luxurious tucked away in a private spot. Either way, getting away from the typical distractions of home will allow you to reconnect as a family. Because cabins aren’t as popular in the winter, it should be easy to book your ideal location. Make sure to take extra food, water, and blankets in case your trip lasts longer than expected. Packing some board games is an excellent idea, too!

    Go Plogging

Does your family enjoy getting outside to exercise together? What about volunteering to help the community? Combine the two with a Swedish craze that’s taking over the world: plogging. From the Swedish words “plocka” (to pick) and “jogga” (to jog), plogging is essentially a trash-cleanup jog around town. Grab some gloves and a trash bag and head out to your local parks, nature preserves, or even your kids’ school grounds. Jog along until you find trash, then try to pick it up as quickly as possible, and continue your workout. You can make it a friendly competition among family members, too! Register your family’s efforts on the international site to track community progress.

    Take Nature Photographs

Whether the ground is covered in snow or your days are humid and balmy, winter photography is a great way to capture the unique elements of the season as a family. Have the kids make a list of certain plants, animals, and natural elements they want to find and capture in your shots, then plan a drive, or hike out to begin the search! Plus, you can take memorable photos on a smartphone without having to invest in specialized equipment. Make a photo book of your adventure to remember the fun for years to come.

    Winter Stargazing

Because the Earth is tilted on its axis, the night sky visible during the summer is different from what you can see in the winter. Take advantage of some new constellations this season by planning a stargazing adventure. Drive somewhere remote to minimize light pollution, then use this interactive sky chart to input your location, date, and time for a detailed map of what you can see with the naked eye. If it’s frigid outside, take sleeping bags and blankets to snuggle with on the hood of your car. Kids will think it’s so fun to stay up way past bedtime!

    Conduct Winter Science Experiments

If you need an indoor activity for the days when the weather outside is unbearable, try some science experiments that unlock the secrets of winter—everything from ice structure to pinecone behavior is covered in the ideas here. Even if you don’t have snow outside, you can conduct most of these experiments with ice from your freezer. Older kids can also record weather observations and track nature patterns to compare with observations in other seasons!

Make wonderful family memories this season with these fun winter activities!

  • Maine shooter signaled to police during check in that fellow reservists were afraid of him

The gunman responsible for Maine’s deadliest mass shooting told New York State Police that his fellow Army reservists were afraid of him, because he was likely going to “do something,” according to body cam footage.

The footage, obtained by WMTW-TV under New York’s Freedom of Information Law, showed reservist Robert Card telling troopers who escorted him to his hospitalization last summer that people kept talking about him behind his back.

“They’re scared ‘cause I’m gonna friggin’ do something. Because I am capable,” Card said, The Associated Press reported.

In October 2023, Card opened fire on two separate locations in Lewiston, Maine, leaving 18 people dead and 13 injured at both a bowling alley and bar. He was found dead in the woods from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a multi-day statewide chase.

The body cam footage was recorded on July 16 before he spent two weeks at Keller Army Hospital for evaluation in the psychiatric hospital.

Maine State Police also recently released a new piece of information from their investigation. In a note on his cellphone, Card had written three days before the shooting spree that he’d “had enough” and warned that he had been “trained to hurt people,” the AP reported.

Eight of his fellow reservists have been authorized to testify at an upcoming meeting for the independent commission investigation. The Army is also conducting its own investigation.

Liz Seal, who lost her husband in the shooting, called the footage disturbing. The body camera footage shows that “there were clear warning signs that Card posed a risk to others and yet the system failed to ensure that his guns were taken away from him,” she told the AP.

The tape and resulting investigations further highlight the argument that police and the Army were sufficiently warned that Card was suffering from mental health issues long before the October shooting, per the AP.

His family expressed concern to police in May that he was growing paranoid and they were worried about his access to guns. A colleague described him as a “gun nut,” while another said he was worried that he was going to hurt himself or someone else.

    The Associated Press contributed.

  • NATO Draws Up Plan to Deploy Forces in Europe in Event of Conflict With Russia

The new plan will reportedly build on the experience of NATO’s Steadfast Defender military exercise launched in January.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – NATO’s Joint Support and Enabling Command center in Germany is drawing up a plan for the deployment of the alliance’s forces across Europe, including their support and reinforcement in the event of a conflict with Russia, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Friday, citing unnamed officials.

The new plan, prepared at the NATO center located in Germany’s southern city of Ulm, will reportedly build on the experience of NATO’s Steadfast Defender military exercise launched in January. The drills are about “preparing for a conflict with Russia,” NATO Military Committee Chair Adm. Rob Bauer was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The initiative comes as new estimates of Russia’s military capabilities and a recent assessment of its arms production capacity have set off alarms among Western officials and prompted the West to invest more in defense, the report said.

It also follows growing alarmism among Western officials and politicians in recent weeks about supposed Russian plans to attack NATO member countries, an idea Russian officials have dismissed out of hand.

“We assess that [Russian President Vladimir Putin] takes our Article 5 commitment seriously and does not want to go to war with NATO,” one senior US defense official anonymously told the Financial Times, referring to the NATO Charter’s article on collective defense in case of aggression against an alliance member by a third party.

Meanwhile, in an interview with journalist Tucker Carlson last week, President Vladimir Putin said that NATO countries were trying to intimidate their own populations with an imaginary Russian threat. Russia has no interest in waging a war against NATO, Putin added.

The Steadfast Defender military exercise is taking place in the Atlantic and Europe, involving some 90,000 troops from 31 allies and Sweden, and will last until the end of May.

In recent years, Russia has witnessed unprecedented NATO activity near its western borders. Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern about the alliance’s buildup of forces in Europe. The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that Moscow remains open to dialogue with NATO, but on an equal footing, while the West should abandon its policy of militarizing the continent.

  • Fact Check: Weather conditions, not Joe Biden, linked to helicopter crash that killed Nigerian banker

Last week, after the chief executive of one of Nigeria’s largest banks died in a helicopter crash en route to the Super Bowl, social media users claimed that President Joe Biden planned the accident to destabilize the global economy and help him win the 2024 presidential election.

In a Feb. 15 Instagram video, a woman says, “I find it very weird that no one is talking about how there were six Nigerian billionaires who died in a plane crash mysteriously while on their way to the Super Bowl and how Biden just posted this cryptic a — message right after they died. Authorities are investigating it, which means to me they may suspect foul play.” The post’s caption says, “This young woman is referring to the real meaning behind Joe Biden’s cryptic tweet after the Super Bowl.”

In a Feb. 12 Instagram video, a man suggests that Biden orchestrated the accident to create a financial crisis leading up to the 2024 election, pointing to what he says are a series of similarities when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out before the 2020 election.

Both posts refer to a Feb. 11 tweet from Biden’s official X account that shows the president with glowing red eyes and includes the caption, “Just like we drew it up.” The image was a joke and referred to a conspiracy theory that the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl win was planned so Taylor Swift, the girlfriend of Chiefs player Travis Kelce, could endorse Biden for the 2024 presidency.

Aviation experts told news outlets that poor weather — not Biden — likely was to blame for the fatal helicopter crash.

The Associated Press reported that on Feb. 9, Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Bank in Nigeria, his wife and son, two pilots and the former chair of the Nigerian stock exchange, died in a helicopter crash in Southern California’s Mojave Desert. The plane’s destination was Boulder City, Nevada, 26 miles southeast of Las Vegas, where Super Bowl LVIII was played Feb. 11.

An accident investigation is ongoing, but aviation experts told AP that the flight should have been canceled because of poor nighttime weather conditions in the desert. A mix of rain and snow during the flight could have led to low visibility, and there are few lights in the Mojave Desert.

“If I were in charge, I certainly would have said ‘No, thank you’” to flying, aviation safety consultant Pete Field told AP.

Gary Hufbauer, a Peterson Institute for International Economics economist, said the claim that the helicopter accident was planned to create a global financial crisis is “bizarre.” The Nigerian CEO’s death would not affect the global economy, he said.

Wigwe and his associates were flying in a helicopter privately chartered by Orbic Air. Harvard University Risk and Audit Services found that flying on a chartered aircraft is more dangerous than flying on a commercial aircraft because charter operators are less regulated.

In 2013, a lawsuit was filed against Orbic Air, claiming one of its helicopters was negligently operated after a man died in a crash, CBS reported at the time.

We rate the claim that Biden’s tweet is proof that a helicopter crash that killed six Nigerian billionaires was planned by Biden Pants on Fire!
