  • Atiku Blames Tinubu’s ‘Poverty Of Ideas’ For Naira’s Free Fall, Offers Solution

    Tinubu-vs-Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s foreign exchange crisis, accusing him of lacking concrete policy solutions and offering his own recommendations.

At a meeting called by Tinubu on Thursday, Atiku said the president failed to present any tangible steps to curb currency fluctuations and alleviate poverty.

The president had summoned the meeting with governors of the 36 states to address the food crisis facing the nation.

According to Atiku, President Tinubu “demonstrated a poverty of ideas” at the meeting when he “failed, yet again, to showcase any concrete policy steps that his administration is taking to contain the crises of currency fluctuation and poverty that face the country.”

The former vice president added, “Rather, he told the country and experts who have been offering ideas on how to resolve the crisis that he and his team should not be distracted and allowed time to continue cooking their cocktail that has brought untold hardship to the people of Nigeria.”

Atiku, in a statement on Sunday, urged the president to abandon his “usual hubris” and embrace alternative solutions.

He claimed to have foreseen the current economic crisis and proposed solutions in his policy document, “My Covenant With Nigerians” released ahead of the 2023 presidential election in which he emerged second position

Atiku said the Tinubu administration had no business fixing an official exchange rate after it claimed to have floated the naira to eliminate the multiple exchange rate system and halt exploitation by opportunists and middlemen.

The former VP believes this approach is incompatible with Nigeria’s economy and limited foreign exchange reserves, adding that a fixed rate would require substantial reserves to defend the Naira, which Nigeria currently lacks.

“A fixed exchange rate system would be out of the question. First, it would not be in line with our philosophy of running an open, private sector friendly economy. Secondly, operating a successful fixed-exchange rate system would require sufficient FX reserves to defend the domestic currency at all times. But as is well known, Nigeria’s major challenge is the persistent FX illiquidity occasioned by limited foreign exchange inflows to the country. Without sufficient FX reserves, confidence in the Nigerian economy will remain low, and Naira will remain under pressure. The economy will have no firepower to support its currency. Besides, a fixed-exchange rate system is akin to running a subsidy regime!” he said.

Offering an alternative, Atiku said he’d rather adopt a managed-float system where the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervenes to control and stabilize the Naira’s value, primarily to curb speculative activities.

“On the other hand, given Nigeria’s underlying economic conditions, adopting a floating exchange rate system would be an overkill. We would have encouraged the Central Bank of Nigeria to adopt a gradualist approach to FX management. A managed-floating system would have been a preferred option. In simple terms, in such a system, the Naira may fluctuate daily, but the CBN will step in to control and stabilize its value. Such control will be exercised judiciously and responsibly, especially to curve speculative activities,” he added.

According to Atiku, Tinubu’s foreign exchange management policy was hastily formulated without proper consultation with stakeholders, thereby causing “untold pain and distress” to Nigerians.

He accused the administration of failing to anticipate the negative consequences of its actions.

“The Government did not allow the CBN the independence to design and implement a sound FX Management Policy that would have dealt with such issues as increasing liquidity, curtailing/regulating demand, dealing with FX backlogs and rate convergence.

“I firmly believe that if and when the Government is ready to open itself to sound counsels, as well as control internal bleedings occasioned by corruption and poorly negotiated foreign loans, the Nigerian economy would begin to find a footing again,” said the former presidential candidate.

  • Search and Rescue searches for home – Paradise Post

CHICO — Dennis Schmidt was working as public works director for the town of Paradise when he found a second calling as a first responder.

In December 2007, he saw a convoy of vehicles race up the ridge to look for a family lost in the forest. The helicopter rescue of Frederick Dominguez and his three children after three days in the snow became international news; over the course of the search, Schmidt found himself thinking, “Man, this is right in my backyard, and I probably have some skills that could help them.”

Now he’s trained in helicopter extractions — one of his primary roles with Butte County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR), a team of 50 volunteers who provide life-saving aid to people in distress.

SAR answered 130 calls last year, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The team trains 15 days a month to stay sharp on the various skills that may come into play on any given rescue. Members also perform maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

The compensation? Nothing financial. Despite the depth of the commitment and risk of injury, SAR members don’t even get a stipend like the $15 a day for jury duty.

“But (jurors) don’t get to have nearly as much fun,” Schmidt chuckled.

“That’s true,” said Christina Skaggs, SAR’s board president, who joined the team soon after her husband, Trevor. “We work hard, but also are having fun. We get to see parts of the county that I never would have seen before, and we get to do some pretty cool stuff.”

Take Schmidt’s role as a helicopter rescue tech. As Skaggs describes it, “he gets to dangle beneath a helicopter and help people. That’s the life; I don’t think you could pay to do that.”

Skaggs incorporates her medical background as a physicians assistant along with skills she’s learned on the team — training coordinated by Trevor, a software engineer by profession who also lends his expertise to the I.T. side of the operation.

Sheriff Kory Honea supports and salutes every member’s service.

“The Butte County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team is made up of all volunteers,” he said “They are a highly trained and skilled group of people who give their own time to help others. They respond on average to two to three calls per week. They are an invaluable resource to the Sheriff’s Office and an invaluable asset for our community.”

    HQ quest

Any time of the day or night, on any day, an alert from Honea can rally SAR to its headquarters in southeast Chico. They’ll muster personnel and equipment to head out as quickly as possible — sometimes even beyond the county line to provide assistance to other agencies.

Speed is relative given the constraints of the facility. It’s located on the edge of the Mendocino National Forest Genetic Resource Center; SAR leases the land but cannot expand. The equipment bay demands a real-life version of Tetris to fit vehicles — and even then, some must remain outdoors.

“We’re just hamstrung here at this location,” Schmidt said.

The gate is manual with locks. SAR hoped to upgrade to automatic but couldn’t get permission to trench for the power lines and sensors.

“Trying to open a combination lock at 2 in the morning when it’s raining,” Schmidt began — “In the dark,” Skaggs injected — “it’s not easy.”

Before heading out, someone must stop to shut and secure the gate.

Every minute counts. Last year, for instance, SAR reached a woman clinging to a tree as stormwater rushed toward Ord Ferry Road by River Road. “If we’d have been five minutes later,” Skaggs said, “who knows what would have happened?”

So, SAR is searching for a new home. They’re in the midst of a $1.5 million fundraising campaign, Operation Rescue Ready, to build a facility on new land — preferably in the vicinity of the current HQ, which Skaggs said is “close to where most of our members live” and, thus, reduces response time.

The estimated timeline is four to five years. (Visit buttesar.org/rescue-ready for more details.)

Meanwhile, SAR continues to recruit new members. The group welcomes participants at the general meeting the second Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Lt. Larry Estes Training Center, located at 3965 Morrow Ln.

Neither Schmidt nor Skaggs came in with rescue backgrounds — “I was a Boy Scout many years ago,” Schmidt quipped. “Everything else has been taught through the courses being a member here.” He described members as “white collar, blue collar, everything in between.”

  • GoFundMe launched to help pay Trump’s legal fees

The wife of an investor has launched a GoFundMe to help fund former President Trump’s mounting legal expenses in the wake of Friday’s verdict in the New York fraud case.

The GoFundMe has a goal of $355 million — the amount that Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay nearly in penalties in a civil fraud case. As of Saturday night, the GoFundMe had already raised over $185,000 with more than 4,000 donors.

With interest, Trump and his business could pay more than $450 million, according to the New York attorney general’s office.

The online fundraiser was started by Elena Cardone, the wife of investor Grant Cardone, an entrepreneur and investor.

“I stand unwaveringly with President Donald Trump in the face of what I see as unprecedented and unfair treatment by certain judicial elements in New York,” Elena Cardone wrote on the GoFundMe page.

She continued, “The recent legal battles he faces are not just an attack on him, but an attack on the very ideals of fairness and due process that every American deserves.”

The Friday financial penalty comes shortly after Trump was ordered to pay $83.3 million when a judge determined last month that Trump defamed writer E. Jean Carroll. Trump was previously ordered to pay Carroll $5 million last year.

Trump’s attorneys slammed the Friday verdict, calling it a “politically fueled witch hunt,” and said the former president will appeal the ruling.

  • Report: Truckers to Deny Loads in NYC to Protest $350 Million Ruling Against Trump

“It’s election interference. So we’ll see what happens. Truckers are for Trump!”

Truckers are reportedly in talks to refuse delivering loads in New York City beginning on Monday in solidarity with former President Donald Trump in the wake of the $350 million fraud case ruling against him.

A trucker who goes by Chicago Ray took to X on Friday to report that he’s spoken with a dozen other drivers who are prepared to deny NYC loads in protest of Judge Arthur Engoron’s Friday ruling against Trump that also prohibits him from doing business in the city for three years.

“I’ve been on the radio talking to drivers for the last hour…and I’ve talked to at least 10 drivers going the other way. They’re going to start refusing loads in New York City starting on Monday,” Chicago Ray claimed.

He added that he knows three drivers he works with who’ve informed their boss that “they ain’t going to New York City.”

“I don’t know how far across the country this is or how many truckers are going to start denying loads going to New York City, but I’ll tell you what, you f*ck around and find out,” he said.

The livid trucker went on to address the NYC leftist waging lawfare against Trump, claiming their latest ruling amounts to election interference.

“We’re tired of you motherf*ckin’ leftists f*ckin’ with Trump, okay? Motherf*ckers starting to get tired of this sh*t,” he said. “Our bosses ain’t going to care if we deny loads, we’ll just go somewhere else. You know how f*ckin’ hard it is to get into New York City with one of these motherf*ckers? F*ck that.”

“I wish nothin’ on nobody but from what I’m hearing, this is real,” he continued. “We’ll see. Leave Trump the f*ck alone with the bullsh*t. You know you ain’t got sh*t on Trump, so cut the bullsh*t. He’s going to win this motherf*cker on appeal but it’s still, you know, it’s bullsh*t. It’s election interference. So we’ll see what happens.”

“Truckers are for Trump, man. We’re like 95, 96% out here, all Trump. Ain’t no motherf*ckers for Biden,” he added.

Others on social media showed their support for a trucker boycott on NYC for as long as Trump’s business practices are banned in the state — 3 years.

It remains to be seen just how many truckers will participate in the rumored boycott against NYC on Monday, or how effective it will be in sending a message to the anti-Trump left, but Infowars will report on the developments as they happen.

  • Why I’m Running Away From Events Organised To Celebrate My Achievements- Abia Governor

    Alex-Otti

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti says his administration is collaborating with the World Bank for the six-lane dualization of 19.1 Kilometer Owerrinta-Umuikaa-Onuimo- Itungwa-Mgboko Amairi- Amaise-Ahiabaubi-Umuelelchi-Omoba road.

Otti disclosed this during a grand civic reception organized by the people of Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area in his honour for his victory at the poll and triumph at the Supreme court.

The governor said the bidding process for the road project, conducted by the Abia State government in collaboration with the World Bank, will be open for one month prior to its commencement.

Governor Otti emphasized that this extensive road infrastructure initiative aims to foster development, attract investment, and improve accessibility for the people of the state.

“We have decided that at any point, if you get into the state, you will know that you have entered Abia State, and that is why we have started the dualization of the Owerrinta Umuikaa road.

“We thought we should not stop it at Umuikaa, we now also extended the dualization from Umuikaa all the way to Umuene, and from Umuene, we will bring it into Omoba.

“We are also dualizing the Onuimo road, moving it to join the Tower to Okpara square and already it is receiving serious attention.

“The whole idea is to open up our places so that people can have access,” Otti stated.

The governor, however, expressed gratitude for the celebration but revealed that initially, accepting such accolades was challenging for him.

According to Otti, “I do not seek celebration in this manner. The truth is that it is still early stage, and somehow, I try to run away from events like this because if you don’t caution yourself, it is possible to derail. It is possible for you to begin to seek and clog the media. It is possible to start celebrating what does not exist.

“We are all from this state, and we know that crowds like this were not unavailable in the previous administration when the state was decaying”

  • Auston Matthews snaps record in Toronto Maple Leafs game vs. Anaheim

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews on Saturday broke a salary cap-era record set close to 20 years ago by a former San Jose Sharks winger.

Matthews recorded his sixth hat-trick of the season, giving the San Ramon native a league-high 48 goals on the season in just 52 games. Matthews added two assists for a career-high five points as Toronto walloped the Ducks 9-2.

Matthews’ six hat tricks are the most in a season since 1995-96, when Mario Lemieux had six for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“It’s hard to put into words to be in the same sentence as a guy like (Lemieux), so that’s all I’ll say about it,” Matthews told reporters, “but it’s definitely pretty cool.”

Matthews opened the scoring at the 3:41 mark of the first period, then added two goals in the second as the Maple Leafs opened up a 7-1 lead.

For Matthews, it was his 13th career hat trick, tying him with Pat LaFontaine for most hat tricks in one season by a U.S.-born player.

Goalie Lukas Dostal started the game for Anaheim but allowed four goals on 18 shots. At the start of the second period, Dostal was replaced by John Gibson, who gave up four goals on nine shots as Toronto took an 8-1 lead. Gibson ended up making nine saves on 14 shots.

Matthews also had a hat-trick on Thursday night as the Maple Leafs beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3. All three of Matthews’ goals in that game came in the second period.

“It’s exceptional. I’ve kind of gone through the phase where you’re in awe of Auston, but this seems to be a new standard for himself,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “To have a hat trick and then follow it up again, which as we know is not the first time he’s done this, it’s pretty remarkable.”

Matthews opened the season in October with hat tricks in back-to-back games against Montreal and Minnesota, then added one in November against Buffalo and one in January against Calgary.

Matthews has now passed Jonathan Cheechoo’s salary cap-era record of five, set during the 2005-2006 season. Cheechoo had 56 goals that season – still a Sharks single-season record — to win the Rocket Richard Trophy as the NHL’s top goal-scorer.

Not surprisingly, all five of Cheechoo’s hat tricks that season came after the Sharks acquired Joe Thornton from the Boston Bruins on Nov. 30, 2005. Three of Cheechoo’s hat tricks came against the then-named Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, with others coming against the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Los Angeles Kings.

Also, all eight of Cheechoo’s two-goal games that season came after the trade.

The NHL’s overall record for hat-tricks in a season is 10, set twice by Wayne Gretzky, first in 1981-82 and then in 1983-84.

  • Hochul apologizes for ‘poor choice of words’ over Canada-Hamas analogy

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) apologized on Saturday for her “poor choice of words” over the Canada-Hamas analogy she made during her keynote address at a Jewish philanthropy event in New York City this week.

Hochul apologized for the “inappropriate analogy” she made on Thursday when she that Israel has the right to destroy Gaza in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack.

“If Canada someday ever attacked Buffalo, I’m sorry my friends, there would be no Canada the next day, right, right?” Hochul said at the UJA Federation of New York Lawyers division annual event. “But think about that, that is a natural reaction. You have a right to defend yourself and to make sure it never happens again, and that is Israel’s right.”

Hochul apologized late Saturday for her Thursday remarks, saying they could be “hurtful” to members of her community. She added that Palestinian civilian casualties should be minimized and advocated for increased humanitarian aid.

She expressed regret for her “poor choice of words” and for the use of an “inappropriate analogy that I now realize could be hurtful to members of our community,” according to a statement obtained by CNN.

“While I have been clear in my support of Israel’s right to self-defense, I have also repeatedly said and continue to believe that Palestinian civilian casualties should be avoided and that more humanitarian aid must go to the people of Gaza,” Hochul said.

Her speech on Thursday drew a rebuke from several lawmakers and groups in the state of New York, including New York City Council member Shahana Hanif.

“I need to see changed behavior. I will not be forgiving you at this time,” Hanif wrote on Saturday.

New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani said on Friday that Hochul is “justifying genocide.”

The UJA Federation of New York thanked Hochul for “standing with the Jewish community.”

“Thank you, @GovKathyHochul for joining us this evening at our Lawyers Division Annual Event and for always standing with the Jewish community and against antisemitism and hate in New York,” the organization said on Thursday.

  • NUPRC Boss Komolafe Bags The Sun 2023 Public Service Award

The Commission Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, has been conferred with The Sun 2023 Public Service Award.

Receiving the award on Saturday in Lagos, Komolafe who expressed happiness over the award, said it would propel him and his team to deliver higher service to the nation.

“This award will further encourage us to dedicate ourselves to the service of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

“The task of nation building is a collective effort. It’s not for people in government alone. It’s actually for all the citizenry. And this award speaks to the reward mechanism in our society. When the resourceful ones are rewarded, it further inspires others to be resourceful and continue to do the task of nation building.”

Addressing journalists, Komolafe noted that since coming onboard as the commission chief executive of NUPRC, he and his team have been working assiduously in ensuring the effective implementation of the statutory mandate of the commission.

The NUPRC boss stated that as at 2011, the rig count in Nigeria was just about 11, but today it is about 30, which indicates vibrant activities in the industry.

“If you listen to feedback from the industry, you’ll recall that as at 2011, we had just about 11 rigs. As at today, we’ve about 30 rigs in the Nigerian upstream. That’s huge success for us. And you know that rigs measure vibrancy of activities in the industry,” Komolafe said.

He stressed that the commission under his watch has boosted investors’ confidence by bringing certainty and predictability into the industry.

“We’ve attracted capex running into billions of dollars into the Nigerian upstream. We’re happy that we’ve success story to tell just in about less than two and a half years,” he said.

Since its creation under the PIA in 2021, NUPRC has introduced about 17 regulations which had been gazetted into law. They are aimed at providing a regulatory environment that assures efficiency, predictability, clarity and effectiveness to oil and gas industry in the country.

While all the 17 regulations are key to driving growth in the industry, Komolafe is very passionate about the Measurement Regulation.

According to him, effective implementation of the regulation will save Nigeria billions of dollars.

“Within a record time, we’ve churned out over 17 regulations with the objective of giving meaning to the intent of the Petroleum Industry Act. So, these regulations serve to ensure certainty and predicability in the activities of the industry as against pre-PIA regime,” he stated.

“Of all the regulations, of course all of them are dear to my heart, but I’m particularly very proud about the Measurement Regulation, which is a noble initiative.”

Having held roles as Group General Manager, Special Duties at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) now NNPC Limited; Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division; Executive Director (Commercial), Pipelines and Petroleum Marketing Company (PPMC); General Manager, Operations, Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF), General Manager, Operations, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), among several others, Komolafe has played key roles in strategic policy formulation and implementation in the oil and gas industry.

As part of measures to increase the nation’s crude oil production, NUPRC under the leadership of Komolafe in December, 2022 launched the 2022/2023 mini bid round for seven Deep Offshore blocks otherwise called Petroleum Prospecting Licences (PPLs).

    The seven deep offshore open blocks are: PPL-300-DO, PPL-301-DO, PPL-302-DO, PPL-303-DO, PPL-304-DO, PPL-305-DO and PPL-306-DO.

Speaking in January during an engagement with the Oil Producers’ Trade Section (OPTS) and the Independent Petroleum Producers Group (IPPG), he said the commission will conclude the 2022/2023 mini bid round as well as conduct a new bid round of 12 blocks located in the continental shelf and deep offshore this year.

The commission has also concluded the 2020 marginal field bid round. About N200 billion was made for the Federal Government from 57 oilfields offered. This is in addition to $7 million in signature bonuses and others.

Experts believe that this will help the Federal Government to achieve its target to increase Nigeria’s oil reserves from about 37 billion barrels to 50 billion barrels as well as increase proven gas reserves from about 209 trillion cubic feet to 250tcf in the short to medium term.
