  • Watch: NYPD Mocked After Unveiling Overweight Female Dance Team as Crime Soars

NYPD seems more preoccupied with PR stunts than addressing record crime amid unprecedented migrant crisis.

The NYPD was roundly ridiculed on social media after unveiling its dance team comprised of overweight female officers.

The NYPD Dance Team joined WPIX 11 to show off their moves last week in a bid to recruit more women to the team.

President Autumn-Rain Martinez described dance rehearsal as “a place to release mental stress.”

“We have to have a space to decompress,” she told WPIX 11.

But many on social media criticized the stunt, pointing out that the NYPD’s priorities seem out of whack given the city is mired in record violent crime.

They also mocked the fact all the women on dance team looked overweight and out of shape.

This comes as New York City is grappling with an unprecedented migrant crisis, with thousands of migrants seeking shelter and other accommodations that’s costing the city at least half a billion dollars a year.

If only the NYPD prioritized enforcing the law and addressing the migrant crisis as much as they do trying to improve their public relations and implementing internal DEI policies.

  • Two Chinese Caught Stealing Nigeria’s Minerals In Ogun

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two Chinese men for illegal mining activities in Kwara State.

The suspects were arrested by operatives of the agency’s Ilorin Zonal Command.

According to the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, on Sunday, the suspects Yang Chao, 39, and Xiao Jiang, 38, were arrested alongside one Chidi Joseph Osuji, a 48-year-old man suspected to be an accomplice in the illegal business.

Oyewale said the three suspects were arrested after the Commission was hinted about their activities and trailed them to their mining sites located at Ogunmakin and Ogere, Ogun State.

The spokesman noted that after days of surveillance, the suspects were finally arrested.

“Preliminary investigations showed that Chao and Chidi are working as factory manager and machine operators respectively with Cruis Chemical Nigeria Limited located at Ogunmakin in Ogun State, while Jiang works with John Odiba Multibiz as an assistant manager in Ogere, Ogun State,” Oyewale said.

He said the suspects operate as a cartel and allegedly specialise in the illegal mining of minerals such as marble stone, white powder, lithium and lepidolite, among others.

He also explained that they transport the minerals outside the country illegally.

“Investigations also linked the three suspects as owners of the solid minerals being conveyed by the 41 suspects arrested with truck loads of minerals at Share, Banni, Lade, Patigi and Okolowo in Kwara, and Igbeti and Ogbomosho in Oyo state by operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC on on February 5, 2024.

“They were arrested for engaging in mining activities without requisite licences,” the spokesman said.

In a separate development, the EFCC said it has arraigned one Oluwabiyi Peace, owner of Just Series Nigeria Limited, for allegedly issuing a dud cheque worth N13m to a customer.

Oluwabiyi was arraigned before Justice O.A. Adeyemi of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan.

She was arraigned on Wednesday alongside her company, Just Series Nigeria Limited, on a one-count charge bordering on the issuance of dishonoured cheque.

The lone-count charge reads: “That you Oluwabiyi Peace and Just Series Nigeria Limited, on or about the 29th of June, 2021 at Ibadan within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, issued First City Monument Bank Plc Cheque No. 0037862154, dated 29th of June, 2021 in the sum of N13, 000, 000.00, made payable to Nuru Bello, which when presented for payment within three months was dishonoured on the grounds that no funds or insufficient funds were standing to the credit of the account on which the Cheque was drawn, thereby committed the offence of issuance of dishonoured cheque contrary to Sections 1 (1) (a) and 1 (1) (i) of the Dishonoured Cheque (Offences) Act, Cap D 11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

The accused had pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to her, and following her plea, the prosecution counsel Mabas Mabur asked the court to fix a trial date.

The counsel prayed the court to remand the defendant to a correctional centre.

However, defence counsel, A.A. Maisolati informed the court of a bail application filed and served on the prosecution on behalf of his client.

He also prayed the court to admit his client to bail in most liberal terms.

Justice Adeyemi subsequently admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N5 million and two sureties in like sum.

The judge also ordered that the sureties be property owners in Oyo State.

  • Cruz: Senate GOP leadership could show ‘some backbone’ in bringing up Mayorkas impeachment trial

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Sunday called on his GOP colleagues in the upper chamber to demonstrate “some backbone” and push for an impeachment trial for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who was impeached by the GOP-led House last week.

Mayrokas became the first Cabinet official to be impeached since the 1870s in last Tuesday’s 214-213 vote, which followed a first failed vote.

The articles are not expected to move in the Democrat-led Senate and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)’s office said last week the chamber would take up the articles when it returns on Feb. 26.

“I got to tell you, with the Mayorkas impeachment, you know what Schumer wants to do? He doesn’t even want to have a trial,” Cruz said on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”He doesn’t even want to have senators vote on guilty or not guilty. What he’s trying to do is simply table it, just put it aside.”

“In over 200 years of our nation’s history, the Senate has never once tabled articles of impeachment. That has never happened. Every single time, the Senate has voted, has voted on either guilt or innocence or the House has withdrawn the impeachment,” he continued.

Cruz argued the situation provides an opportunity for the GOP leadership in the Senate to push back against criticism.

“And I got to say, look, if Republican leadership in the Senate doesn’t like the criticism, here’s an opportunity to demonstrate some backbone. They could stand up and say, let’s have a trial. They can stand up and say, you cannot refuse to even follow the constitutional process for impeachment. You can’t dodge responsibility,” he said.

The Hill reached out to Schumer’s office for a response.

House Republicans, in their impeachment of the Homeland Security head, accused Mayorkas of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law,” and claimed he violated immigration laws by failing to detain a sufficient number of migrants.

The articles also accuse Mayorkas of “breach of public trust,” which includes misleading claims about Mayorkas’s interactions with Congress and his response to subpoenas from the House Homeland Security Committee. It also said he “failed to take action to fulfill his statutory duty to control the border.”

No administration has ever detained all migrants, with various immigration law experts determining earlier this month that Mayorkas did not violate any laws and is faced with the same difficult choices of past administrations about whom they can detain, The Hill previously reported.

Some Senate Republicans have also dismissed the impeachment effort.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), a member of the Senate GOP leadership team, said last month, “We’ve got so many things to do, I don’t think impeachment was something intended to be brought up every three months or every two months.”

  • Stuck In Debt: Under Pressure By Rising Prices, Small Businesses Struggle To Stay Afloat

Mrs. Patricia Nwama started her small business, Devine Grace Provision Stores, around 2012 which she built from scratch, but the entrepreneur is highly indebted to her suppliers who are demanding their money.

Patricia who is in her 50s has seven children including dependents and was able to train five of them in the university from the proceeds of her once booming provision store in Gwarinpa, Abuja.

“So far business has been frustrating. The prices of commodities are making us go crazy. The prices started rising during the festive period and then in January. If things continue from now to September, I may divest,” Patricia lamented.

Diminished patronage from customers induced by reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has squashed sales figures. The official inflation figure for January according to the National Bureau of Statistics is 29.9 per cent.

In January 2024, Patricia sold a kilogram of chicken for N2,500 but the new price is N3500 and it is likely to rise, the entrepreneur said.

A carton of Indomie Noodles which was sold for N5,000 now costs N7,500 and customers are no longer patronising her business as usual.

“I had an experience last month where we went to the market to buy a product in the morning. I was supposed to make some profits but by the time I was done selling in the evening, I could not buy new stock because the price had doubled within hours. So, I added the profit I made and also ended up owing the supplier.

Devine Grace Provision Store Owned By Mrs Patricia

“I do order for Indomie worth N280,000 but when I went to the market to restock, they told me the same quantity costs N350,000 and no longer N280,000. I paid the supplier N280,000 and owed him N70,000. This is the same experience with other products that I sell. Customers think we are just inflating prices. They don’t know what we go through. They don’t know how much we spend on transportation.

“I am highly indebted and, in any business, when the debt is much, you cannot say you are progressing.”

When Patricia closed her financial records for 2023, she was shocked that she owed her suppliers nearly N1m.

“Before 2022, when we close our yearly financial account, aside from the daily thrift I do and the money I set aside for rent, food, fees, medication, and other things, I still record over N800,000 as annual profit.

“Last year, from January to December, I had in my company account only N130,000. It is unbelievable that the business has fallen to this point despite the effort I make.”

Ahmed founded Two Brothers Feed in Kaduna State, a business that produces animal feed for poultry farmers. However, Ahmed has downsized because he could no longer cope with the high cost of inputs.

Ahmed said the cost of materials became so expensive and the demand for the final output- chicken feed dropped after he increased his price.

“A good number of the poultry farmers that depend on my supply have closed down because they also can’t afford it. This will worsen food insecurity,” he said.

Mrs. Gift Effiong is facing a similar challenge with her restaurant business. She started her restaurant business with less than N350,000.

Unfortunately for her, inflation has eroded her profit and she is struggling to keep her less than three years old restaurant business afloat.

Mrs. Effiong had three workers but she laid off two of them in February because she could no longer pay their monthly salary.

She said, “The challenge is that prices rise daily and customers don’t want to understand because they are also not finding it so easy. Around December last year, when I went to market with N100,000, I could buy enough stock for my business. Garri was N27,000 but, unfortunately, things have become so bad.

“On Saturday, February 10, I went to buy garri and a bag was N40,000 the next time it rose to N45,000. Today, I paid N47,000 for one bag. No business can survive with this kind of trend. If I have another option, I will not continue with this because you have other bills to pay like AMAC bills for permits, environmental and food handling.”

The entrepreneur who is looking to switch to a new business has been unable to settle her annual rent and has been indebted to some of her suppliers for months.

    What Tinubu’s Government Promised MSMEs

The woes began when Tinubu took over office on May 29, 2023, and on the same day, he announced removal of fuel subsidy which was no longer sustainable. The Central Bank of Nigeria announced a managed float on June 14 which dragged the naira to N1,537.9 as of February 16, 2024.

    Bola-Ahmed-Tinubu-delivers-victory-speech
President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, delivers victory speech

The administration promised an ambitious plan to diversify the country’s economy. SMEs are at the heart of his plans and in July last year, he earmarked N125bn for the sector but inflation and exchange rate crisis has frustrated the plans.

In December last year at the commissioning of the corporate headquarters of the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima reiterated to his audience that the administration will not relent in its promise to secure small businesses.

He said, “Allow me to emphasise the importance of this moment: there is no more fitting time than now to reinforce the protection of enterprises in Nigeria. Our resolve to protect SMEs remains unshaken.

These enterprises not only stand as the very bedrock of our society but also reflect the direction the government is headed and the velocity with which we do so. This moment solidifies His Excellency President Bola Tinubu’s assurance to protect our enterprises. It resonates deeply within our economic revitalisation plan.”

Government Has To Act Quickly— Development Economist React

A development economist and A Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Professor Peter Njiforte said the plights of MSMEs did not come as a surprise following the removal of fuel subsidies and floating of the naira.

Senior Lecturer, Department of Economics, ABU Zaria, Prof. Peter Njiforte

He said MSMEs are suffering because imported inputs have become so expensive causing MSMEs to find it difficult to continue production which has a ripple effect on traders and other businesses.

Njiforte said, “This situation was obvious because when they removed subsidy and floated the naira, they failed to subsidise basic inputs that will help small-scale businesses to be afloat.

“A lot of recommendations have been made and it is like the handlers of government are running out of ideas. What the government should immediately do is subsidise some of the inputs for domestic farm production.”

The economist said it may be difficult to maintain subsidy but he insisted that it is important to keep MSMEs afloat.

The professor said a lot of people are thinking of going back to the farm but they cannot afford a bag of fertilizer which has risen to N35,000.

“Urea is N35,000 which is even above minimum wage. So, how can somebody whose salary is not up to N35,000 buy fertilizer? SMEs are providing the bulk of employment that the country needs. By so doing, businesses will not close down and more people lose their jobs,” he said.

He said the government has to do all it can to protect the naira adding, “You can’t allow a free float when you don’t produce. You have to protect your currency.”

  • Durham wrestling captures first Northern Section crown in 64 years – Paradise Post

RED BLUFF – Geovani Rico didn’t know whether to cry, celebrate or scream – so he did all three. All it took was a matter of 15 seconds for the lone senior on the Durham High wrestling team to pin Chico’s Gabe Rodriguez.

The pinfall was the deciding factor as the Trojans captured their first Northern Section team title since 1960 – ending a 64-year drought and sending the team into a celebratory frenzy inside a jam-packed Red Bluff High Pavilion on Saturday night.

Rico was stunned as he was hit with a wave of emotions and surrounded by his teammates. He not only sealed the team title, but he also secured a berth into next week’s CIF State Wrestling Championships held at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

“Everyone in the crowd was motivating me,” Rico said while still trying to catch his breath from celebrating. “Last year, losing in the semifinals and not being able to go to state … I wanted to make my mark this year.”

Rico was well aware of the potential to make history for Durham High. He said Durham head coach Tony Cardoza brought it up on the first day of practice.

“We’ve been working our butts off every day to get to this moment,” Rico said.

In a battle between the two Northern Section powerhouse programs, Durham edged second-place Chico by a 5.5 margin to cap the historic day. Las Plumas took third with 139 points followed by Lassen (116.5) and Anderson (116).

The team title marks the first time a small school has ever won in the era of the Masters Tournament. When Durham won the championship in 1960, it wasn’t deemed the Northern Section Masters Tournament.

“It’s just a small school, small town, everybody feels like family and that’s what this team is – it’s an extension of my family,” Cardoza said.

The 287-pound matchup between Rico and Rodriguez was a rematch from the Chico vs. Durham dual on Jan. 26 where Rico won on a 3-1 decision.

The monumental day for the Trojans all began with a freshman – Landon Salindong – who made quick work of his opponent to capture the 108-pound title. Salindong pinned Red Bluff’s Brice Bearchum in 44 seconds in the first finals bout of the evening.

“I’ve been really nervous for that match. It was a rematch from earlier this season. I won but it was close last time,” Salindong said. “It felt good to get the pin. I think I knew I needed to finish it quickly.”

Richard Halvorson, a junior, marked Durham’s third champion of the day as Halvorson pinned Las Plumas’ Dylan Delany in 2:41 to earn the 152-pound title.

It was Durham’s depth and consistency to place within the top three that helped secure the team title for the Trojans. Second-place finishers for Durham included Zachary Lacey (115), Haden Solinger-Owings (122), Isaiah Vaughan (134) and Edgar Flores-Estrada (159). Each earned a trip to the state championships as the top two finishers in each weight class advance.

Colson Thurman (140) and Zachariah Zwinger (146) took third for the Trojans.

“I am so proud of the kids. They came here and really stepped up today under pressure and did amazing while having fun. I’m beside myself.”

Cardoza, a wrestling coach of 19 years, was also honored as the Northern Section boys Coach of the Year prior to Saturday’s finals.

“We have all these people who work on our staff. It is a team effort and a team award,” Cardoza said.

Chico High, which finished with 268.5 points in the standings, had several standout performances. Jeovany Navarrete won on a 9-2 decision to capture the 122-pound title and get the first victory for the Panthers.

Navarrete’s twin brother, Johny, followed in the 128-pound final, upsetting Orland’s David Griffith for the first-place victory.

In the third period, Griffith flipped Johny Navarrete on his back to swing the momentum his way. However, a quick reversal from Johny Navarrete allowed him to get a takedown and lead 11-7. The sequence sparked booming cheers from the Chico fans in the stands. As time ran out, Johny Navarrete was victorious on a 14-9 decision.

“I was going through a lot of motions. I was waiting for the right moment,” Johny Navarrete said. “When he turned me I knew I had to fight back and go back into battle. I just waited for the next move and stayed calm.”

Ryan Clink, the Chico High senior, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Clink pinned his way through the tournament going 4-0 to win the 167-pound title. Clink used a fast and aggressive start to build an 8-0 lead in the first period over Modoc’s Lewis Crumwell. Clink’s lead grew to 14-0 and finally won with a pin in 3 minutes.

“I’m always hungry to go for that state medal. I love wrestling and my coaches are pushing me every day,” Clink said. “It’s my last (state championship tournament). When I’m in college I know I’ll miss high school wrestling.”

Fellow Panther Jack Dalling followed Clink with a pin in 2:41 over University Prep’s Asher Edwardson to take the 177-pound title.

Clink and Dalling have been practice partners all season trying to push each other down the stretch.

“Our whole roster is filled with guys who are tough. That’s what I love about the team,” Clink said. “We’re all here to win. Either way I’m so proud of us.”

Other area state qualifiers include Pleasant Valley’s Carter Mallinger (192), Las Plumas’ Broden Small (217), Orland’s David Griffith (128), Las Plumas’ Dylan Delany (152).

Chico’s Wyatt Williams (140) won his true second-place match to qualify for state, defeating Durham’s Colson Thurman. If the second place wrestler and the third-place wrestler of a weight class didn’t face off in the tournament, it calls for a true second-place match.

    Corning girls take first

The Corning High girls wrestling team topped the standings with 198 points, securing its second-straight Northern Section Masters team title.

The Cardinals had first-place finishes from Elise Toste (112) and Amaya Fairley-Vasquez (157).

Chico finished second with 169 points followed by Pleasant Valley with 165, Durham with 140 and Anderson with 107 points to round out the top 5.

Pleasant Valley’s Mikayla Seidler won the 137-pound championship by pinning Shasta’s Danika Jenson in 3:17. Seidler, a senior, went 4-0 in the tournament to secure her trip the state championships.

Chico High champions include Nereyda Bill (142) and Samone Sandoval (147). Paradise’s Maleah Ballejos won the 107-pound title.

Orland’s Addison Bersten won the 122-pound title.

Durham’s Raeanna Halvorson won the 132-pound title. Raeanna Halvorson and her brother, Richard, mark the first brother-sister duo to win Northern Section Masters Championships in the same year.

Raeanna Halvorson, a senior, pinned Corning’s Margarita Leal in 2:44.

“I didn’t want to get into my own head. I wanted to try to be the best,” Raeanna Halvorson said. “I was trying to be on top of the north and qualify for state and place on the podium and I did.”

  • Trump Unveils Sneaker Line After Being Found Liable for Hundreds of Millions of Dollars

“This is something I’ve been talking about for 12 years, 13 years, and I think it’s going to be a big success,” said Trump.

On Friday, Trump was ordered to pay nearly $355 million in his New York civil fraud trial. His legal troubles have now amounted to a debt that exceeds a half-billion dollars.

Former President Donald Trump unveiled a new line of sneakers at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, a day after he was ordered to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in a New York civil fraud trial.

The line features three different types of shoes: a pair of high tops, a pair of red athletic shoes and a pair of white athletic shoes. The shoes range in price from $199 to $399. The high top sneakers are named the “Never Surrender High Top Sneaker”, are gold, and feature a “T”. They are priced at $399.

The former president was met with cheers as well as boos as he unveiled his new sneaker line.

    • Introducing Next Level Foundational Energy from Dr. Jones Naturals starting at 30% off! This cutting-edge dietary supplement is designed to elevate your energy levels and support your overall well-being.

Along with the sneaker line, Trump is also selling a “Victory47” perfume and cologne for sale at $99 each. Trump would be the 47th president if elected. And while these new lines are said to have nothing to do with Trump’s presidential campaign or the Trump organization, Trump campaign officials have promoted the line on social media, according to a not-for-profit American news agency.

“This is something I’ve been talking about for 12 years, 13 years, and I think it’s going to be a big success,” said Trump, during the unveiling of his sneakers.

According to the website that is selling his products, they are “trademarks of CIC Ventures LLC. Trump Sneakers are not designed, manufactured, distributed or sold by Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization or any of their respective affiliates or principals. 45Footwear, LLC uses the Trump name, image and likeness under a license agreement.”

The former president, 77, is running in the US presidential campaign this year and it is predicted that his top competitor will be US President Joe Biden, 81, who is running for a second term. The current president’s campaign spokesperson Michael Tyler, criticized the former president’s sneaker launch.

“Donald Trump showing up to hawk bootleg Off-Whites is the closest he’ll get to any Air Force Ones ever again for the rest of his life,” he said, as a reference to the Nike sneaker, as well as the presidential air transport fleet.

The former president now owes a roughly combined $438 million following two criminal trials: one in which he was ordered to pay $83.3 million to the writer E. Jean Carroll for defamation, and $355 million in penalties that he was ordered to pay on Friday after a judge ruled that Trump had lied about his wealth for years in an effort to dupe banks and insurers. That, in combination with interest, means Trump’s debt now exceeds a half-billion dollars.

The Conference of Former Speakers of State Houses of Assembly of Nigeria (COFSSHA) has decried the falling value of the naira and called for urgent intervention by the Bola Tinubu administration.

The call was contained in a communique the association issued after a meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, at the weekend.
