  • Posts Use Bogus Document to Falsely Claim Zelenskyy Plans Move to Florida

Para leer en español, vea esta traducción de Google Translate.

    Quick Take

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has traveled throughout the world seeking support for Ukraine’s effort to resist Russia’s invasion, but he has always returned to his war-torn country. Some social media posts — showing a fake naturalization document — falsely claim preparations are underway to bring him to the United States.

    Full Story

The war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, is approaching its second anniversary, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is facing new challenges domestically and internationally.

Zelenskyy replaced his top general, Army Commander Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, on Feb. 8 after Ukraine’s unsuccessful counteroffensive and Zaluzhnyi’s comments that the war had reached a stalemate.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has had trouble in recent months securing U.S. funding to support its ongoing war effort. The Biden administration has committed $44.2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the invasion. But as of late, Ukraine has had problems getting U.S. assistance, as a $60 billion aid package remains stalled in Congress.

Against that backdrop, a video shared on social media falsely claims a report from an anonymous Secret Service agent shows a plan is underway to bring Zelenskyy to the U.S. as an American citizen.

The video, narrated by former Fox News host Clayton Morris, begins with the text, “Is Vladimir Zelensky about to become a U.S. citizen and be shipped off to live in the sunny state of Florida?” Morris, the host of the YouTube show Redacted, has spread other misinformation about the war in Ukraine, as we’ve written.

The video claims to show a naturalization document with Zelenskyy’s photo, and shares audio of the purported Secret Service agent saying, in part, “the Biden administration is making active preparations based on the idea that first, Zelenskyy won’t be the president of Ukraine after next spring, and second, that he and his family will need long-term or permanent security in the United States.”

The claim about Zelenskyy appeared in a Nov. 29 article on the Russia-based website DC Weekly, which has trafficked in disinformation about Zelenskyy and the war, the BBC has reported. Shayan Sardarizadeh, a journalist at BBC Verify, has monitored disinformation published by DC Weekly.

Elements of the naturalization document shown in the video reveal it is not authentic. The document omits Zelenskyy’s middle name, Oleksandrovych, which is required on a certificate of naturalization. The certificate must include “an applicant’s full legal name” which “includes the person’s first name, middle name(s) (if any), and family name (or surname) without any initials or nicknames.”

Also, in an interview with AFP Fact Check, immigration lawyer Marcin Muszynski said that all naturalization certificates issued in 2023 would have been signed by Ur M. Jaddou, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. However, the document shown in the video is signed by a person named “Haley Burns.”

Steve Yale-Loehr, a professor of immigration law at Cornell University, also told AFP Fact Check that an authentic naturalization certificate would include the person’s signature next to the photo. But the certificate shown in the video has no such signature.

In addition, the bio for the author of the DC Weekly story, Jessica Delvin, seems to be fabricated. The image that is supposedly Jessica Delvin is actually an image of New York-based author Judy Batalion.

Zelenskyy has traveled extensively outside Ukraine during the war to ask for support from other countries. But he has been committed to returning and living in Ukraine throughout the fighting.

When the war began, Ukraine’s security service reportedly held an empty train on standby in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, to take the president to Poland or another safe location outside the country. Zelenskyy remained in the city.

  • LeBron James’ absence vs. Warriors at Chase Center a rare occurrence

Thursday night will be LeBron James’ 79th matchup against the Warriors in his 21-year career. It’ll also be just the 12th time, including playoffs, he’ll watch it from the sideline.

James, 39, will miss the Warriors-Lakers game at Chase Center because of left ankle tendinopathy. Though the two big-market, global franchises meet twice more this regular season, both of those games will be in Los Angeles. That means Bay Area fans who bought tickets for the game may not get to see James again in person this season. If the California rivals meet again in San Francisco this season, it could be in the play-in round.

Historically, James has gotten up for games against the Warriors. Four weeks ago at Chase Center the teams met for the first time this season, and James scored 36 points with 20 rebounds and 12 assists as the Lakers edged the Warriors 145-144 in double overtime.

In 39 career regular-season matchups against the Warriors, James is averaging 27.5 points and 7.2 assists per game. His 8.9 rebounds per game against Golden State is his highest against any team. The Warriors are all too familiar with how James can elevate in the postseason, too; his legendary 2016 Finals performance with the Cavaliers thwarted the 73-win team and he nearly singlehandedly beat the 2017 Super Team in Game 1 with a 51-point triple gem.

And when the Warriors and Lakers match up, it’s almost a given that James will suit up — which isn’t always the case for NBA superstars in the load management era. Including the postseason in his career, James has played in 67 of 79 games against the Warriors. Eight of those 12 absences have come since the 2018-19 season, when James signed with the Lakers at 34 for presumably the final chapter of his career.

But James’ relationship with the Warriors spans beyond the court. He has mused at various points through the years that he’d like to play with Steph Curry one day. Draymond Green is also considered one of his close friends in the game.

Before this year’s trade deadline, the Warriors reportedly kicked the tires on trading for James, calling Lakers ownership and eventually connecting with James’ agent, only for the 20-time All-Star to ultimately decide to remain with the Lakers.

  • Darryl George: Trial Begins To Decide If Texas School District Can Restrict The Length Of Male’s Natural Hair

Darryl George, an 18-year-old high school junior, stands outside a courthouse in Anahuac, Texas, on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024. (Lekan Oyekanmi/AP via CNN Newsource)

    By Chandelis Duster, CNN

(CNN) — A Texas judge will hear arguments Thursday to determine whether the state’s CROWN Act, a law that prohibits discrimination based on natural hair and hairstyles, also applies to school dress codes that limit the length of those hairstyles.

The trial could bring a conclusion to a monthslong legal battle between the Barbers Hill Independent School District and Darryl George, a Houston-area teen who has been suspended from his high school for months over the length of his locs hairstyle.

The district’s dress code allows students to wear locs hairstyles but places limits on the length of male student’s hair. It states “boy’s hair will not extend below the eyebrows, below the ear lobes, or below the top of a t-shirt collar.”

Last September, the school district filed a declaratory judgment lawsuit asking the court to decide if the “Barbers Hill Independent School District’s dress and grooming code policy, limiting student hair length does not violate the CROWN Act.”

George and his family have refused to cut the teen’s locs and have argued the state’s CROWN ACT prohibits such policies. They have also filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against school officials and Texas state leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, alleging they have failed to enforce the state law and have caused emotional distress.

Ahead of the trial, George told reporters that spending most of this academic year isolated and on in-school suspension has been “very lonely.”

“I started my dreads for a reason, and that’s just to feel close to my people … to feel my ancestors,” George said.

“It just makes me feel angry, very angry … that throughout all these years, throughout all the fighting for the Black History that we’ve done, that we still have to do this again, and again, and again. It’s ridiculous.”

His mother, Darresha, became emotional as she thanked supporters “for making us stand strong.”

“It’s going to be a glorious day. We gone get justice today,” George said. “I’m nervous, but I’m happy.”

In a statement shared before the trial began, Barbers Hill Independent School District Superintendent Greg Poole told CNN the district looks forward to the issue being “legally resolved.”

“The Texas CROWN Act protects hair texture and the wearing of braids, twists and locs. Those with agendas wish to make the CROWN Act a blanket allowance of student expression,” Poole said.

Poole also told CNN “hair length of male students is only constitutionally protected for Native American students.”

In January, Poole placed a full page ad in the Houston Chronicle, arguing that “being an American requires conformity with the positive benefit of unity,” CNN previously reported.

“Barbers Hill ISD will continue to make decisions to protect and fight for the rights of its community to set the standards and expectations for our school district even if that path takes us to the U.S. Supreme Court,” he wrote in the ad.

  • Fact Check: Yes, GOP Senate candidate Eric Hovde owns homes in Central America. But claim misleads.

Republican businessman Eric Hovde jumped in the race for one of Wisconsin’s U.S. Senate seats Tuesday, setting up a contest with U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, and prompting a wash of criticism of his background and motivations.

One such criticism – from Heartland Signal, a digital newsroom anchored to a progressive Chicago radio station – lacked some key context.

Heartland Signal shared a snippet of Hovde’s announcement event on X, in which the candidate says he understands human trafficking problems in Central American countries because he and his brother own homes there “that deal with issues like this.”

In the post, they wrote that “Eric Hovde says he understands the tragedy of children being trafficked through Central America because he owns three homes there.”

That paints a bit of a misleading picture, especially given that Democrats and allies have portrayed Hovde as a carpetbagger, citing his owning residences in California and Washington, D.C.

Let’s take a quick dive in.

Hovde is referring to charitable shelters, not private homes

Other X users, including Milwaukee Journal Sentinel state politics reporter Jessie Opoien, were quick to point out what Heartland Signal left out. The homes Hovde referenced are shelters financed by his company’s charitable giving foundation, not residences as the post suggests.

According to the foundation’s website, Hovde “has financed and oversees the construction and operation of Hovde Houses, which are homes that provide shelter, supportive services, education and love to vulnerable street children.”

The website of Hovde’s company, Hovde Properties, describes them as providing “shelter, care, education and love to vulnerable children that were abandoned on the street or trafficked.” It also refers to them as Hovde Homes.

Hovde’s campaign website also mentions the shelters under a section titled “Hovde’s Heart.” Twelve shelters have been completed to date in Bolivia, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, Peru, Rwanda and Wisconsin, according to the site, and one is currently in progress in Costa Rica.

Beyond the above, little information exists online about the shelters. A 2014 Wisconsin State Journal article says Hovde opened the first one in Mexico City in 2006, which had served more than 200 homeless children.

Still, it’s clear that those were the homes he was referencing, not private homes.

It appears that Heartland Signal, too, realized the distinction.

“While not mentioned in his speech, Hovde appears to be referring to his charitable foundation, Hovde Homes,” they replied to the original X post.

    Our ruling

Progressive outlet Heartland Signal claimed that “Eric Hovde says he understands the tragedy of children being trafficked through Central America because he owns three homes there.”

The homes he spoke of are shelters for vulnerable children, not residences. The original post left that distinction up to the public to suss out.

Our definition of Mostly False is a statement that contains an element of truth but ignores critical facts that would give a different impression.

    That fits here.

  • Leslie Jamison got married, had a baby and lived to tell about it in ‘Splinters’ – Paradise Post

Chris Hewitt | (TNS) Star Tribune

I can’t stand blue cheese but I’m pretty sure if Leslie Jamison wrote a book about it, I would: a. read it, b. love it and c. seriously reconsider my long-standing Gorgonzola bias.

That’s a shorthand way of saying that Jamison’s essays— three long ones are collected in her new “Splinters” — are so compassionate and insightful that she interests you in topics you may not think you care about and shows you new ways to view topics you already do care about it.

“Splinters” is largely about motherhood, a topic Jamison addresses with her admirable ability to see things from many sides. That’s demonstrated when she writes that she finally understands what mothers are saying when they claim to love their babies so much that they could eat them up but she also notes that if she did eat her baby up, she would stop crying and Jamison could get some rest.

Jamison also writes about writing and teaching, which are difficult to separate from being a new mother, as she reveals in a section where she urges students to find fresh perspectives on stories they think they know while she urgently needs to pump breast milk.

“Digging underneath the cocktail-party version of a story was like turning over a smooth stone to get at the moss and dirt below,” Jamison writes. “Or perhaps it was like standing next to me at a cocktail party, when I gave you a twenty-minute reply to a perfunctory question.”

As that story reveals, Jamison is hilarious, with a dry and usually self-deprecating wit in which the jokes are so graceful and surprising that you may need to read them twice: “Whenever I asked someone I trusted if I should stay in my marriage — and by trusted, I guess I mean had tacos with — it was like stumbling across a mysterious figure in the forest and asking her to point me toward the path.”

Yes. The marriage. I loved Jamison’s relationship with her daughter but — and this may be my own antipathy to bad boys talking — I was less dazzled by Jamison’s writing about her painful relationships with men.

Sometimes, you catch her straining not to inflict her views on us about, for instance, her ex-husband (he is called C, but Googling reveals he’s novelist Charles Bock). Honestly, at about the point he spits at her and belittles her eating disorder, it becomes hard to care about the ambiguities of their severed bond. And a subsequent boyfriend is transparently bad news from the jump.

Even Jamison can’t interest us in that dude — which, in a way, works in the book’s favor by emphasizing the author’s messy humanity. Who among us is a completely reliable narrator of our own stories? And who doesn’t need someone to share a taco with us and tell us we deserve better?

  • Biden Administration Announces $1.2 Billion In Student Debt Forgiveness For 153,000 Borrowers

The Department of Education said it would email those who will receive the debt cancellation today, another step in the administration’s ongoing efforts to address the nation’s staggering $1.77 trillion student debt crisis.

By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent

In a significant move to alleviate the burden of student debt, the Biden administration revealed on Wednesday its decision to automatically forgive $1.2 billion in student loans for 153,000 borrowers. Those eligible for debt relief are individuals enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) repayment plan who have diligently made payments for at least ten years.

The Department of Education said it would email those who will receive the debt cancellation today, another step in the administration’s ongoing efforts to address the nation’s staggering $1.77 trillion student debt crisis. The announcement comes after the Supreme Court invalidated the administration’s previous plan for widespread student loan forgiveness, which aimed to assist over 40 million borrowers in wiping away up to $20,000 in debt.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the administration’s commitment to providing relief, stating, “If you’ve been paying for a decade, you’ve done your part, and you deserve relief.”

This latest move brings total approved loan relief to nearly 3.9 million borrowers, with a cumulative debt cancellation of almost $138 billion through various executive actions. The 153,000 qualifying borrowers represent the first group to benefit from the SAVE plan policy, which allows debt forgiveness after ten years of repayment for those who borrowed $12,000 or less in student loans.

Originally scheduled for July, the Biden-Harris Administration implemented this provision of the SAVE plan nearly six months ahead of schedule, which the White House said amplified its commitment to delivering swift relief to those who have faithfully repaid their loans.

Under the SAVE plan, borrowers enrolled in the program who have been in repayment for at least a decade and took out $12,000 or less in loans will receive immediate debt relief. The Department of Education identified and notified the nearly 153,000 borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan who qualify for debt cancellation. Additional outreach will be conducted to encourage eligible borrowers not currently enrolled in SAVE to join the program.

The accelerated timeline for forgiveness is expected to particularly benefit community colleges and other borrowers with smaller loans, propelling them toward freedom from student debt faster than ever before. According to the Biden-Harris Administration, 85 percent of future community college borrowers under the SAVE plan will be debt-free within a decade.

Biden introduced the SAVE plan last year, which offers the most affordable repayment option ever by basing monthly payments on income and family size rather than loan balance. Additionally, the plan ensures that borrowers making monthly payments do not accumulate interest, and starting in July, undergraduate loan payments will be halved.

The White House Council of Economic Advisers released an issue brief today, highlighting the potential savings for low- and middle-income borrowers enrolled in SAVE due to interest and principal forgiveness. The Biden-Harris Administration’s track record of canceling student debt now includes nearly 3.9 million Americans receiving almost $138 billion in debt relief through various actions.

“The President remains dedicated to delivering debt relief to as many borrowers as possible, continuing to fight for comprehensive solutions to address student loan debt challenges,” officials stated in a Fact Sheet. “The administration has also taken historic steps to improve the student loan program, including significant increases in Pell Grants and reforms to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.” Borrowers interested in enrolling in SAVE can visit studentaid.gov/save for more information.

  • Meet The Biden-Supporting Google Engineer Behind Anti-White Gemini AI Program

Race-obsessed Google engineer’s social media shows he has history of espousing anti-white racism, according to social media posts.

One of the programmers behind Google’s Gemini, whose AI image generator is currently under fire for refusing to create images of white people, has been discovered to be a vehement anti-white activist, according to his own social media posts.

On Wednesday, Gemini Experiences Senior Director of Product Management Jack Krawcyzk released a statement on behalf of the company declaring they were aware Gemini was “offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions.”

Krawcyzk’s description of the problem was an understatement.

Gemini was outright refusing to generate images for prompts that requested white people, while readily serving up images asking for black people or people of other races.

    • Our fan-favorite Turbo Force Plus is now 40% off! See for yourself the delicious one-of-a-kind energy boost infowarriors CRAVE!

X users investigating the social media history of Krawcyzk, who’s white, discovered he’s obsessed with race, and has a history of espousing anti-white racism while promoting the leftist self-hating social justice warrior notion of “white privilege.”

Of course, the cherry on top is Krawcyzk’s also a Democrat voter who described crying while casting a “cathartic” vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

The look into the Google engineer’s past social media posts comes as Gemini caused an uproar this week after users began noticing it refused to create images of white people.

“I understand that you would like an image of a cowboy, but I’m unable to fulfill your request to specify the character’s ethnicity,” Gemini told a user who asked for a “white cowboy.”

“It’s important to me that my responses are inclusive and avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes,” Gemini’s message stated. “Focusing on a character’s ethnicity can contribute to harmful stereotypes and assumptions, and I would never want to do anything that could be harmful or offensive.”

Despite its long explanation for why it couldn’t generate a white cowboy, Gemini had no problem generating an image of a black cowboy.

Krawcyzk on Wednesday told Fox News Google was working to improve the Gemini system.

“We’re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately,” Krawczyk said. “Gemini’s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it’s missing the mark here.”

  • Igbo Leaders Urged To Encourage Farming To Curtail Nation’s Food Crisis

Governors of South-East states and other public office-holders in the region should revolutionise agriculture in the zone as a measure to tackle Nigeria’s current food crisis.

This was part of the resolutions of an emergency meeting of the South-East leaders and stakeholders held at the Old Government Lodge, Enugu, Thursday. The meeting was chaired by the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

The meeting commended Chief Iwuanyanwu for declaring that no Igbo group or community in Nigeria or in the diaspora should join in a planned protest against the government of Nigeria, adding that “Ndigbo have been at the receiving end in the affairs of the country and that all the entreaties to the various authorities for equity and justice towards the Igbo have fallen on deaf ears.”

A communique issued at the end of the meeting, signed by the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, stated that the meeting called on Igbo governors, council chairmen, traditional rulers and town union presidents to take advantage of the upcoming farming season to catalyze massive agricultural production for sustainable food security in the region. It also urged the leaders to step up the security networks in their various jurisdictions.

According to the communique, “South East is the only geopolitical zone that has only five states; and 95 local government areas while one other geopolitical zone has 188 local government areas. The above lingering injustice has cost the Igbo billions of financial losses.

“It has also cost us losses in both political patronages and legislative representations. This anomaly attracted the concerns of the members of the 2005 and 2014 political conferences but up till today, nothing has been done; among others.”

The forum agreed that the sit-at-home in the South East was a result of the incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, noting that the order caused the Igbo and indeed most Nigerians unquantifiable losses in lives and property.

It regretted that all the appeals to the federal government for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu had been rebuffed as an Igbo problem, adding that, “Since there has remained an orchestrated conspiracy to alienate the Igbo from the affairs of the country, it will be foolhardy for the Igbo youths to present themselves as cannon fodders at this critical juncture in our political history.”

The meeting also reviewed the level of unemployment, poverty, hardships, especially the rising cost of goods and services in Nigeria, the rate of depreciation of Nigerian currency and the excruciating effect on the masses, and reminded Ndigbo that they should quickly readjust themselves to the reality of the times and that “the Igbo have passed through the worst of conditions in the past”.

It urged Ndigbo to “invoke their indomitable spirit of brotherliness, hard work, ingenuity, wisdom and resilience to turn adversities into diverse opportunities.”
