  • Ibadan Explosion: Mali’s Exit From ECOWAS Frustrating Extradition Of Suspects — Gov Makinde

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has disclosed that his government is working toward the extradition of some Malians involved in the explosion that recently rocked Dejo Oyelese Street in the Bodija axis of Ibadan, the state capital.

The blast had resulted in about five deaths and destruction of property.

Makinde also stated via his X handle on Saturday night that some people involved in illegal mining at Idi-Ayunre area of the state have been arrested following tip off about the facility.

According to him, “In our efforts to prevent a recurrence of the Bodija Incident, we were at Idi-Ayunre, following a tip off about a facility which was being used to process illegally mined minerals. I can report that those involved have been arrested and are in custody and we are working to prosecute them.

“Our government has also taken over the facility pending the investigations and prosecution. We were able to apprehend the culprits because the government and citizens worked together in a timely manner to bust their operations.”

He added, “Let me take this opportunity to report that we are still trying to extradite the Malians indicted in the Bodija Incident who are on the run. We are having difficulties because Mali pulled out of ECOWAS.

“We will continue to deploy diplomatic means to ensure they are brought to book. Please continue to support our efforts to rid our State of illegal activities. If you see something, say something and the authorities will do something. 615 is the toll-free number to call when you notice any security breaches.”

  • Juuse Saros, Nashville Predators beat San Jose Sharks

SAN JOSE – A San Jose Sharks team that had been shut out nine times this season – including twice in four games this month —  faced the unenviable task Saturday of trying to put a puck past Nashville Predators goalie Juuse Saros.

As has been the case for years now, it wasn’t easy.

Sharks winger Mikael Granlund and Filip Zadina both scored in the third period, with Zadina’s goal at the 9:34 mark cutting the Predators’ lead to one.

But San Jose could get no closer as Saros finished with 23 saves to lead the Predators to a 4-2 win at SAP Center.

The Sharks were hoping they tied the game with 10:02 left in the third period after it appeared the puck might have been on its way into Nashville’s net before it was dislodged. After an official review, though, it was determined the puck never completely crossed the goal line.

Just 2:30 after Granlund scored his seventh of the season at the 1:10 mark of the third period to cut Nashville’s lead to 2-1, Kiefer Sherwood scored his second of the game.

The Predators hung on from there, as they ran their win streak over the Sharks to nine games. San Jose’s last win over Nashville came on Nov. 9, 2019, and are now 0-8-1 against the Predators.

Saros now has a career record of 11-2-1 against the Sharks. Before Saturday, the Finnish-born goalie had a .940 save percentage and a 1.76 goals-against average in 13 games.

His counterpart and countryman, Sharks goalie Kaapo Kahkonen, made 31 saves, including 21 in the first two periods.

  • RNC member floats draft resolutions to bar committee from paying Trump’s legal bills

A member of the Republican National Committee (RNC) floated two draft resolutions Saturday that would bar the committee from paying former President Trump’s mounting legal fees and ensure it stays neutral in the GOP primary race.

The resolutions, shared by Henry Barbour — an RNC member from Mississippi — were first reported by The Dispatch, and come as speculation surrounds Trump’s influence on the committee before a 2024 nominee is officially chosen.

Trump, who is the likely GOP nominee, recently tapped North Carolina GOP chair Michael Whatley and his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to serve as co-chairs of the committee. The current chair, Ronna McDaniel, signaled she would step down following Saturday’s South Carolina primary.

Lara Trump vowed earlier this month to spend “every single penny” of the RNC’s funds to help elect Trump to the Oval Office.

“Every single penny will go to the No. 1 and the only job of the RNC: That is electing Donald J. Trump as president of the United States and saving this country, she said.

If enacted, Barbour’s proposal would prevent usage of funds to help with Trump’s legal bills — which are upwards of $500 million following verdicts in his New York civil fraud trial and E. Jean Carroll defamation cases.

“The Republican National Committee and its leadership will stay neutral throughout the Presidential primary and not take on additional staff from any of the active Presidential campaigns until a nominee is clearly determined by reaching 1,215 delegates,” part of the proposal said, according to NBC News.

The other proposal, according to outlets, states: “Spending any RNC financial resources for any candidate’s personal, business, or political legal expenses, not related to the 2024 election cycle, does not serve the RNC’s primary mission of helping to elect our candidates in 2024.”

The former president’s two political action committees have already spent over $50 million on his legal fees last year, according to Federal Election Commission fillings.

The proposals were not welcomed well by the Trump campaign.

“The primary is over and it is the RNC’s sole responsibility to defeat Joe Biden and win back the White House,” Trump’s senior advisor Chris LaCivita said. “Efforts to delay that assist Joe Biden in the destruction of our nation. Republicans cannot stand on the sidelines and allow this to happen.”

  • Man Dies While Rescuing Kidnapped Elder Brother In Imo

Tragedy struck on Friday night as suspected kidnappers shot and killed Mr. Henry Ejiogu Ogbuji at Umungada junction, Irete in Owerri West local government area of Imo State.

The deceased who is a native of Obile in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo state met his untimely death while in pursuit of kidnappers who kidnapped his elder brother, Sunny Ogbuji.

According to a village source, the deceased trailed the kidnappers in his own car after he heard his elder brother, Sunny was kidnapped.

The source said: “Henry Ogbuji was shot dead by kidnappers on Friday night. He was pursuing the kidnappers who captured his elder brother, Sunny Ogbuji.

“He came back from his pharmacy shop and heard his elder brother was kidnapped not long ago, and he ran after them in his car. As if he knew they took Owerri/Onitsha road expressway, he got to Umungada junction where he encountered the kidnappers.

“But on sighting that the car coming close to them was after them, they released several bullets, and killed the young man. I wonder what gave him the impetus to run after kidnappers who were well armed. It was an unfortunate situation.”

Reacting to the incident, the Imo State Police Command Spokesperson, Henry Okoye said that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogbaku with his men met the bullet riddled man in pool of blood and took him to Federal Medical Center, Owerri where he wad confirmed dead.

“Following a distress call received on 23/02/2024, at about 21:08hrs, that a young man was shot at Umugada Market Junction, Irete, by suspected kidnappers, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogbaku swiftly mobilized his men to the scene where they met a man later identified as Jeremiah Ogbuji, lying on the ground in his pool of blood, with severe bullet injuries on his chest.

“The operatives immediately rushed him to Federal Medical Center, Owerri where he was confirmed dead and thereafter deposited at the morgue for preservation.

  • Trump Defeats Nikki Haley in South Carolina Primary

The former US president has crushed his last-remaining Republican challenger for the 2024 election.

Donald Trump has won the South Carolina Republican primary, comfortably defeating the state’s former governor Nikki Haley, according to projections by multiple news agencies.

Trump is leading with 58.5% of the votes with 27% of ballots counted, according to the New York Times.

The 45th president’s victory was expected, as he has remained the frontrunner to be nominated by Republicans to challenge Joe Biden, whose time in office he portrayed as disastrous for the country.

In a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier that day, Trump attacked Biden’s mental state and his record as president, arguing that American institutions would “collapse” should he get a second term. He predicted that the “hordes of illegal aliens” would continue to cross the border with Mexico under Biden’s watch.

Haley became the only high-profile Republican rival to Trump after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dropped out of the race last month. She described Trump’s presidency as “chaotic” and accused him of being “toxic” and “lacking “moral clarity.”

  • Iwobi Scores As Fulham Defeat Manchester United 2-1 At Old Trafford

Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, scored the winning goal to help Fulham to a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

It was an amazing evening for Nigerians as another Super Eagles star, Calvin Bassey opened the scoring for Fulham in the 65th minute with a volley following a rebound.

Harry Maguire brought Manchester United back into the game in the 89th minute.

Iwobi finished off an impressive counter-attacking move from a Cairney’s pass before cutting inside between two Manchester United defenders to slot pass the hapless Andre Onana.

He became the first Fulham player to score a winning goal at Old Trafford since Steed Malbranque in October 2003.

Iwobi’s goal helped Fulham to their first win at Old Trafford since December 2009 and also ended their poor run of 11 consecutive defeats away from home.

Fulham coach, Marco Silva hailed his team’s performance at Old Trafford.

He said, “I’m pleased how we played at the start of the second half,” said the Portuguese.

“After we scored, we knew there would be a reaction. We tried to play offside for their goal, but there was not the synchronisation we wanted, and as they pushed, we showed the mentality that we had missed in other away games. It was a great counter and a great finish.

“The players deserve great credit because they understood the plan and executed the plan. It was an open game. We don’t change away or at home. This is our way.”

Iwobi has now scored four Premier League goals this season, while Bassey bagged his first-ever Fulham goal.

  • Conflicted Oakland A’s fans make trek to spring training to watch team

MESA, Ariz. — An announced crowd of 5,253 descended on Hohokam Stadium for the Oakland A’s first game of spring training in what could be the final year the squad represents the city during Cactus League play.

Joyce Wilson, a resident of Napa, was seated by the stadium’s entrance at least two hours before the gates opened to ensure she would be first into the venue. Not even eventually watching her beloved A’s drop their Cactus League opener 5-1 to Colorado could damper her spirits.

Clad in a customized 50th anniversary A’s jersey featuring her last name and the number 81 to represent the number of home games in a season, Wilson has been a season ticket holder for 35 years. In those years, she’s collected over 18,000 autographs.

“I have Rickey (Henderson), Big Papi (David Ortiz), Yoenis Cespedes, Joe Rudi,” Wilson said, continuing to rattle off names.

A's fan Joyce Wilson from Napa was at the team's spring training opener Saturday, Feb. 24 in Mesa, Ariz. She's been a season ticket holder for 35 years and has amassed a thorough autograph collection.
A’s fan Joyce Wilson from Napa was at the team’s spring training opener Saturday, Feb. 24 in Mesa, Ariz. She’s been a season ticket holder for 35 years and has amassed a thorough autograph collection.

Wilson has been making the trek to Arizona to catch Cactus League ball for over 20 years now. Whether the team stays in Oakland a few more years, moves to Las Vegas, or anywhere in between, she has no plans to stop coming to Arizona.

“Oh yes, definitely, I want to support the guys,” Wilson said. “It’s not their fault (owner John) Fisher is doing what he’s doing. I’ll be an A’s fan wherever they are.”

Bay Area native Sabrina Brown wasn’t quite as supportive, saying she won’t be going to spring training or regular season games for the team she’s supported since 1968, once the season ends.

“This will be our last year and then they can go,” Brown said. “We’ll be done and over it. This is our last year being season ticket holders. Even if they stay next year, we won’t continue. Maybe still go to one or two (games). The team is good, but it’s the owners and (president) Dave Kaval (that are the issue).”

Brown’s husband, Adam, was born and raised a Los Angeles Dodgers fan but converted to A’s fandom after marrying Sabrina. Now, the two are taking their baseball attention back down south.

As for A’s fan Tyler Obalek, a Los Angeles native, this season represents one last opportunity to visit his favorite team’s stadium.

“My buddy and I are like ‘We got to go to a game this year’ and it’s on our bucket list for sure,” Obalek said, adding he’ll still support the team regardless where they play. “Besides the Warriors and Niners, there’s nothing left there. The move to Vegas doesn’t feel right in the slightest.”

There remains a possibility the A’s could play somewhere such as Sacramento for a few years before a stadium in Las Vegas is scheduled to be completed for the 2028 season. Travis Carpenter, a fan from Sacramento, would welcome the team’s temporary stay in his city.

“It’s a really hungry city for sports because we only have the Kings,” Carpenter said. “So if you’re really interested in baseball, football, something like that, we have to travel to the Bay Area. And now that those teams are disappearing, not only are they losing it, but Sacramento is, too.”

Travis and Rayce Carpenter, a father and son from Sacramento, attended their first A's spring training on Saturday, Feb. 24 in Mesa, Ariz.
Travis and Rayce Carpenter, a father and son from Sacramento, attended their first A’s spring training on Saturday, Feb. 24 in Mesa, Ariz.

Carpenter took his 10-year-old son Rayce to his first A’s game last season, and this is their first year coming to spring training.

On Friday, Rayce was able to get his jersey signed by his favorite player, Zack Gelof. Whether in Oakland or Vegas, the Carpenters plan to go to one or two games a year moving forward. But it doesn’t make the franchise’s relocation any easier for them.

“It’s unfortunate, because I know the fan base is there,” the elder Carpenter said. “The A’s have been there for so long. It’s kind of like pulling the rug out from under generations of people.”

Brown and her family renounced their season tickets after holding them for four decades. Along the way, the family collected 1,500 autographed bats and an innumerable amount of other A’s memorabilia. But after 56 years in the Bay, she is frustrated a deal couldn’t be reached for the team to stay.

“There’s plenty of land, you have BART, you have Amtrak, the freeway, all the sideroads, there’s multiple ways in and out,” Brown complained. “Where they’re at now there’s still room to play and build up the area. It’s a whole sad situation.”
