  • O’Dea Wins Boys State 3A Title With Hard-fought Win Over Rainier Beach

By Kiara Doyal, The Seattle Medium

The Rainier Beach Vikings faced off against the Eastside Catholic Crusaders last night in the 3A Boys State Championship game under the bright lights at the Tacoma Dome.

Eastside won the opening possession, but slowly but surely the ball was in the hands of the Vikings’ Kaden Powers who got the first points of the night for Rainier Beach, and helped his team build a 5-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Vikings’ run stopped after Eastside Catholic’s Yabi Aklog sank a jump shot to narrow the deficit to 3 points, 5-2.

Aklog’s first basket of the night ignited a spark within him, as he went to the free-throw line twice after being fouled while shooting. Despite only converting one of the shots, Aklog ended the first quarter dominating on the court as he scored all 14 of Eastside Catholic’s points in the opening quarter, to give the Crusaders a slim 1-point lead over the Vikings,14-13, as they headed into the second quarter.

The second quarter had a very high-pace, with possessions changing rapidly between the Crusaders and the Vikings, both teams taking turns in leading the game for the majority of the quarter.

The Crusaders’ Jacob Cofie rode the momentum that Aklog generated during the first quarter and began to contribute significantly for his team. Cofie would score 8 second quarter points, including a slam dunk on an assist from teammate Alex Elston, as the Crusaders stretched their lead to 27-23 as they went into halftime.

During the opening minutes of the second half, Eastside Catholic’s Kayden Green sent the Vikings’ Maceo Rivers to the free throw line for three shots. Making two of the 3 shots, Rivers cut the Vikings deficit to 2 points. However, Green would make up for his mistake by making a critical three-point shot to push the Crusaders lead out to 30-25 over the Vikings.

Coming off of a remarkable first half, Aklog further extended the lead to 10 points with a dunk that ignited the Crusader fans in the crowd.

With the help of a jump shot and a three-point shot just seconds before the buzzer by Powers, the Vikings managed to comeback from a 10-point deficit, to tie the game at 44 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter, the referees were sharp at noticing fouls for either team. The Crusaders went to the free throw line 6 times. Meanwhile the Vikings had two trips to the line, converting 2 of their 3 free throw shots, keeping the game neck and neck. With the help of Aklog’s two trips to the free-throw line and two three-point shots by Riley Wallace, the Crusaders increased their lead to 60-50 as they approached the final minute of the quarter.

During the last minute of the matchup, we saw a lot of action from the Vikings, as they tried to narrow the gap by intensifying their offensive efforts. With 20 seconds remaining in the final quarter, the Vikings’ Jeremiah White made a dunk, followed by a jump shot by Marceo Rivers, bringing the score to 57-63 with 6 seconds left on the clock.

After a couple of trips to the free throw line, the Crusaders sealed the 3A State Championship title with a 66-57 victory over the Rainier Beach Vikings.

Aklog, who scored the first 16 points for the Crusaders in the game, with 28 points to lead Eastside Catholic, while Powers led the Vikings with 15 points, with Rivers was not far behind with 13 points to lead the Vikings.

  • Few Nigerians Can’t Give Nigeria Bad Name, Tinubu Says At Signing Of ‘Employment Agreement’ With Qatar

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has told his Qatari counterpart, His Highness, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, that Nigeria remains an investment hub for the Arab country irrespective of “a few” that try to give a bad name to the country.

Tinubu spoke on Sunday in Doha while witnessing the signing of historic agreements between both nations, touching on mutual cooperation in pivotal sectors of education, employment, enterprise development, investment promotion, youth empowerment, mining, tourism, and sports.

In a statement by Tinubu’s spokesperson, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the president assured his host of Nigeria’s preparedness to welcome investors into the country and that his administration is spearheading reformation in innovation, return on investments, and multiculturalism.

Tinubu said, “Our greatest strength is our people. Our strength lies in the capacity of Nigerian youths. They have energy, talent, and self-belief. They are quality partners for Qatari industry. They are educated and reliable, and they are proactively seeking to add value wherever they are. A few cannot give a bad name to the many. Nigerian youths are ready to be unleashed for the mutual benefit of both nations.

“We have seen clearly the rapid pace and thorough quality of Qatar’s development process. It is impossible not to be moved by what you have accomplished. The leadership in the country has proven its mettle, and we are here to gain deeper insight.

“There is nowhere in the world where you will find return on investment at the level of what you will see in Nigeria. A massive market of over 200 million skilled Nigerians, always industrious and ready to work.

“We face some short-term turbulence at the moment, but we have a government today that reflects the dynamism and talent of the Nigerian people. We are implementing the right solutions. This team works collaboratively with each other and our partners. Nigeria is ready for serious business.”

The Emir of the State of Qatar, His Highness, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, was quoted as saying Qatar is open to Nigeria’s investment push, recalling that he visited Nigeria in 201 following his view that the West African country was a strategic ally.

“I have no doubt about the great capacity of the Nigerian people. Everywhere in the world, they are known for their brilliance and hard work. We only need to ensure that this is happening inside of Nigeria rather than outside. The investments we have made around the world have been very fruitful. This is because we take our time and study opportunities before we invest the common wealth of our people. It is not my money. The money we invest belongs to the future generations of Qatar.

“Mr. President, I am very encouraged by your actions and your passion to create new opportunities. We are very open to this, and follow-up is everything at this point. The will is there for both of us, but we must follow up. I will send a team of officials to Nigeria after Ramadan, and we will advance discussions on what some of the actionable investment opportunities are,” the Emir said.

After their interaction, the two leaders proceeded to sign seven bilateral agreements across multiple sectors.

The statement reads further, “President Tinubu immediately named the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun as the team leader of the government team that will interface with Qatari authorities in investment identification and implementation moving forward.

“Furthermore, during the bilateral deliberations, President Tinubu enabled a brief presentation to the Emir by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, who spoke in detail about the high-grade of several minerals, including lithium, immediately derivable across the country with an emphasis on imminent opportunities for local mineral processing and value-additive industry in the sector.

“The seven agreements signed are: cooperation agreement in the field of education; regulation of employment of workers with the Government of Qatar; establishment of a joint business council (JBC) between the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA); in addition to a cooperation agreement in the field of youths and sports.

“The other agreements are: cooperation in the field of tourism and business events, and a memorandum of understanding combating illicit trade in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

“The documents were signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and relevant officials in the Government of the State of Qatar, Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education; Dr. Ahmad Hassen Al-Hammadi, Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Sheikh Khalifa Bin Jassim Al Thani, Chairman of Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry (QCCI), and Abdullah bin Khalaf bin Hattab Al Kaabi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior (MOI).

“Nigerian ministers who were present at the ceremony were: Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun; Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake; Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate; Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite; and the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Mr. Ekperipe Ekpo.

“Also at the meeting were the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Special Adviser on Energy, Mrs. Olu Verheijen.”

  • Warriors’ hot streak is over as Celtics win huge in Boston

The Warriors went in to Sunday’s matinee against the Boston Celtics riding a hot streak and of a mind to prove they can be a team to be reckoned with in the postseason.

But things went horribly wrong from the outset, and the result was a 140-88 loss at TD Garden as Boston played one the best halves in the history of the franchise to send the Warriors back home to pick up the pieces.

The Celtics held a staggering 82-38 lead at the half, assisting on 20 baskets while making just one turnover. ESPN/ABC commentator Stephen A. Smith was apologizing to the nation for the game being part of the network’s “Sunday Showcase” and for once it didn’t seem like an exaggeration.

It was that bad, and a crash landing at the end of a 3-1 road trip.

Boston, which hasn’t won an NBA title since the 2007-08 season, looked the part of the team to beat in winning its 11th straight game to improve to 48-12 and 29-3 at home.

Jaylen Brown finished with 29 points in a little over 22 minutes for Boston, with Jayson Tatum adding 27 in 25 minutes on his 26th birthday before taking much of the second half off.

Lester Quinones led the Warriors with 17 points, with Moses Moody adding 11 and Jerome Robinson 10.

The Warriors (32-28), who came in having won eight straight on the road and 13 out of 16, were outclassed for the second time in a week by a legit contender, losing the previous Sunday 119-103 at Chase Center to the defending champion Denver Nuggets.

The 44-point halftime lead was the largest in team history for a franchise that has won 17 NBA titles. The deficit was the the most under Kerr. When the game was 24 minutes old, Klay Thompson was on the bench with hamstring tightness and Stephen Curry was done for the day having scored four points after coming in questionable to play with bursitis in his right knee.

Draymond Green also took a seat and did not return with Kerr using the deficit as a load management opportunity with his veteran players.

Brown had 25 points at halftime, with Tatum adding 22. Against a non-existent Warriors defense, Boston was 60 percent from the floor (30-for-50) and 62.5 on 3-point attempts (15-for-24).

Former Warriors general manager Bob Myers, part of the network halftime analysis crew, warned not to put to much stock in how the first half went.

“Steph is not himself right now,” Myers said. “It’s one game. It happens. I’m not making some big proclamation.”

The Warriors were 3-for-18 on 3-point attempts, with Curry going 0-for-9 and 2-for-13 overall.

Boston ran away and hid from the Warriors in the first quarter, going on a 23-1 run over the last six-plus minutes for a 44-22 lead in a game that was actually tied 21-21 with 6:05 left in the quarter after a Curry bank shot.

The Celtics were 10 of 16 shooting 3-pointers in the quarter, with Brown hitting 5 of 9 and scoring 19 points.

The Warriors, on the other hand, were 3-for-11 on threes and 8-for-24 overall. Curry scored just two points on 1-of-6 shots and missed all four of his 3-point attempts — two of them air balls.

Curry was coming off a 25-point game against Toronto that included eight 3-point baskets and he had seven in a road win over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Those games came after a three-game shooting slump in which he hit 31.6 percent of his 3-point attempts. He has hit seven or more 3-pointers nine times in his last 17 games and his 281 threes coming in led the NBA. With 19 more 3-pointers, Curry would set an NBA record for getting 300 in a season for the fifth time in his career.

  • Democrats Must ‘Scare the Sh*t Out of People’ Over Trump in 2024, Says MSNBC’s Donny Deutsch

Since Democrats don’t have a successful platform to run on, liberal talking heads resort to projection and fear mongering to win election.

MSNBC talking head Donny Deutsch proposed a novel strategy to defeat Donald Trump in 2024: “scare the shit out of people” regarding his MAGA agenda.

In the absence of a successful platform to run on, Deutsch argued Sunday on “Deadline: White House” that Democrats and the media’s task until November is to instill fear of Trump into the electorate in hopes they will vote for Joe Biden.

“It’s interesting, somebody said to me, ‘are you afraid if he gets reelected?’ And I hadn’t thought about it. Like, he’s gonna come after Joe. He’s gonna come after me. He might come after you,” Deutsch told host Nicolle Wallace.

In a case of pure projection, Deutsch claimed that Trump will mobilize the U.S. military and judicial system to target political opposition if elected.

“Do you remember when you had a guy like Milley would not take orders from Trump and start to put troops on Americans? That will change. So, there is no independent military or independent judiciary. We’re seeing what that would look like,” he said.

    • Introducing Next Level Foundational Energy from Dr. Jones Naturals starting at 30% off! This cutting-edge dietary supplement is designed to elevate your energy levels and support your overall well-being.

“Guess what, you can’t depend on the rule of law anymore, and independent Federal Communications Commission, you can’t depend on that and certainly not on an independent Justice Department. Freedom will end. Things like women, birth control, that will go away.”

“Scare the shit out of people,” he added.

Deutsch also said that a key feature of the Democrats’ campaign strategy should be to bring former Trump officials into the public eye and have them warn (even more than they already had) about how Trump will end democracy.

“Here’s the campaign the Democrats need to run. And I’ve been thinking about this a lot. There are four people that need to step forward. Kelly, Mattis, McMaster, and Milley,” referring to Trump’s former Chief of Staff, Defense Secretary, National Security Adviser, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman.

“And there needs to be a general campaign where these generals, who have worked with him, need to turn to the American public and turn to the camera and say, ‘You don’t understand how scary this can be. We really can go over a cliff here.’”

Notably, this strategy had already been deployed before: Kelly, McMaster, Mattis, and Milley all spoke out against Trump leading up to the 2020 election.

This fear campaign will likely fall on deaf ears given Americans are already in a frightening situation with rampant inflation, a collapsed border that’s led to millions of illegal aliens streaming into the homeland, soaring crime, and the prospect of entering World War III against Russia over Ukraine.

  • Matt Chapman, SF Giants finalize 3-year contract with player opt-outs

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Third baseman Matt Chapman and the San Francisco Giants have finalized their contract that guarantees $54 million over three years.

Chapman gets a $2 million signing bonus and a $16 million salary this year under the deal announced Sunday, and his agreement includes a $17 million player option for 2025 with a $2 million buyout. If Chapman exercises that option, he has an $18 million player option for 2026 with a $3 million buyout. The deal includes a $20 million mutual option for 2027 with a $1 million buyout.

As a result, he could earn $20 million for one year, $38 million for two years, $54 million for three years or $73 million for four years.

The 30-year-old won his fourth Gold Glove last year and turned down a $20,325,000 qualifying offer from Toronto. Because Chapman turned down the qualifying offer, the Giants lost their second-round draft pick and gave up $500,000 from their international signing bonus pool. Toronto gets an extra draft selection after the fourth round.

To open a roster spot, the Giants put right-hander Tristan Beck on the 60-day injured list with a vascular injury. Beck is to have surgery Monday to remove an aneurysm in the upper part of his pitching arm.

Chapman batted .240 with 17 home runs, 39 doubles, 54 RBIs and a .755 OPS in 140 games. Toronto finished third in the AL East at 89-73 and was swept by Minnesota in their best-of-three Wild Card Series.

Chapman got off to a huge start, hitting .384 with a 1.152 OPS and 21 RBIs through the end of April, but he slumped most of the rest of the way, tailing off to .205 with five homers, 15 RBIs and a .663 OPS in the second half.

The right-handed hitter set career highs with 36 homers and 91 RBIs for Oakland in 2019, when he made his only All-Star team and finished sixth in AL MVP voting.

His OPS dipped to .716 with 202 strikeouts in 2021 before a rebuilding Oakland team traded him to Toronto in March 2022 for a package of four players.

Chapman is a .240 career hitter with 155 homers and a .790 OPS in seven major league seasons. He was seventh in AL MVP balloting in 2018.

Chapman was selected 25th overall by the Athletics in the 2014 amateur draft out of Cal State Fullerton. He played the past two seasons under a $25 million, two-year contract, making a $12.5 million salary each season.

J.D. Davis is the incumbent at third base with the Giants, and he also can play first base and left field. Chapman batted .307 with an .890 OPS against left-handed pitchers last year while Davis hit .247 with a .728 OPS against lefties.
