  • NBA’s Rudy Gobert fined $100,000 for suggesting refs were influenced by gambling

The NBA announced on Sunday that it has fined Minnesota center Rudy Gobert $100,000 after he made a gesture during a Friday night game that implied a referee was improperly influenced by gambling and making calls accordingly.

After Gobert was called for a technical foul in the last few seconds of regulation, during the Timberwolves’ game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, he rubbed his fingers together and directed the money-sign gesture toward referee Scott Foster.

A second referee issued a technical foul, the Washington Post reported, which granted a free throw to the Cavaliers, ultimately sending the game into overtime, which the Cavaliers ultimately won.

Gobert said in an interview after the game that he thought gambling is “hurting our game,” and that “I know the betting and all that is becoming bigger and bigger, but it shouldn’t feel that way,” the Athletic reported.

According to the AP, the fine of $100,000 is the highest possible fine the NBA could give under the new collective bargaining agreement that took effect last year.

The NBA statement said the fine “takes into account Gobert’s past instances of conduct detrimental to the NBA with regard to publicly criticizing the officiating.”

The NBA, in the statement, said Gobert directed “an inappropriate and unprofessional gesture toward a game official” and publicly criticized the referee.

The AP reported that this was the fourth time Gobert was fined as a result of public criticism of officials.

  • Buni Orders Distribution Of Diesel To Public Boreholes As Water Scarcity Hits Damaturu

    Mai-Mala-Buni

The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni has directed the distribution of diesel to all public boreholes in Damaturu and its environs to ease the problem of water scarcity being faced in the past few days.

THE WHISTLER gathered that residents have been battling with water scarcity due to the destruction of a 330KVA electricity line by some unknown vandals.

The Yobe State Police Command in February 2024, disclosed that suspected Boko Haram rebels demolished two 330 KVA power transmission towers in the state, leaving Borno and Yobe communities in total darkness.

This has made it difficult to power borehole generators that supply potable water to residents.

The governor in a press statement issued in Damaturu by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, stated that he was doing all he could to alleviate the suffering of the residents.

He stated that there is enough diesel for distribution to enable the powering of all boreholes in the affected areas, promising that the problem would be resolved immediately.

  • US Reinforces Haiti Embassy, Evacuates Some Staff In Overnight Airlift Mission

US military was forced this weekend to fly in reinforcements to the US embassy in the country’s capital Port-au-Prince.

America could be on the verge of losing another embassy on President Biden’s watch.

Haiti is quickly accelerating into greater chaos and violence by the day. The US military was forced this weekend to fly in reinforcements to the US embassy in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, where the area outside the embassy has been transformed into a warzone.

The late-night operation also included emergency evacuations for non-essential embassy personnel:

“The airlift of personnel into and out of the embassy is consistent with our standard practice for embassy security augmentation worldwide, and no Haitians were on board the military aircraft,” US Southern Command wrote in a statement, as quoted by the newspaper Miami Herald

Earlier this month, more than 4,500 inmates escaped from the Caribbean nation’s two largest prisons. Armed gangs who orchestrated the twin jailbreaks have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

“In the past week, the political crisis in Haiti, combined with escalating violence and civil unrest, has created an untenable situation which threatens the country’s citizens and security,” US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told Newsweek on Friday.

Haitian authorities began a state of emergency last Sunday and extended it on Thursday as fierce battles continue across Port-au-Prince.

The US embassy wrote on X that it will “remain open” despite “heightened gang violence in the neighborhood near US embassy compounds and near the airport.”

Haiti is “on the cusp of even greater chaos and violence,” campaign group Human Rights Watch said last week, adding the political and economic crisis is driving a major humanitarian emergency.

  • Kalu Seeks Review Of Disability Act, 5% Employment Quota For PWDs

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has called for the amendment of Disability Act to provide for at least, 5 per cent quota of employment for People Living with Disabilities (PWDs).

He also pledged the parliament’s readiness to evaluate a suggestion that 10 per cent of all social intervention projects of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government should be dedicated to the welfare of PWDs even as he accepted the special request of becoming the face of the people.

The developments emanated from a courtesy call paid on the deputy speaker by the trio of the Nigerian Institute of Architects; the Chairman, Accelerate Disability in Emergencies Forum,

Agbo Christian and the Chief Executive Officer of TAF Africa, Jake Epelle who also pleaded for the protection and welfare of the PWDs under the law over the weekend in Abuja.

Kalu in a statement made available to THE WHISTLER on Sunday said “I am pledging that we are going to support and champion compliance of, at least, 5 per cent quota of employments for PWDs.

“Also support inclusion of PWDs into a joint board of FAAN, federal government agencies and related bodies to include your views in the ways that things are done on the table of decision making.

“So, you can take home that we are going to review the Disability Act, as well as every law that has to do with your space.

“Talking about disability, I think there is a need for us to also look at that particular Act and see if there is a way to amend it to include a 10 per cent quota for public infrastructures.

“You just mentioned when we are discussing social interventions that something needs to be done around that space. I agree with you.

“As the deputy speaker of the House, I have listened to your interventions, especially with already existing laws and also the upcoming bills.

“You are comfortable with the existing laws only to the extent of their effective compliance.

“So, periodic appraisal of these laws to be able to point out holes and gaps that need to be filled, becomes a necessity as a good instrument for the legislature as well as the executive because the executive is executing and we are legislating.

“We cannot keep on legislating from one legislation to another without knowing how far the ones we legislated have been executed, in compliance.

“And that is one thing you also pointed out today. And it is a take home. It is a take home for us as a legislature to go and look at the legislations around their space and how we have lived in their compliance with the expectations of that legislation, especially as it concerns people with disability. And in the spirit of inclusivity, how have we fared?

“Let me conclude by saying, you can count on us. The Office of the Deputy Speaker, you can count on us. We are open and will remain open to people with disabilities and have accepted to be the face.

“Let me repeat, as pleaded by TAF, I have accepted to be the face of the disabled people. If you are looking for an ambassador of disabled people in Nigeria, people with disabilities, you can count on my fine face. Because this face represents the beauty of your mind, the content of your character and what you are going to bring on board.”

Earlier in her presentation, the President of Nigerian Institute of Architects, Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for the PWDs Act 2018 which she said recognized the need for all buildings in Nigeria to address the accessibility needs of PWDs.

“While this law has been in effect, compliance has been below expectation. In area of approval to new buildings, it’s important that the necessary compliance certificates issued by architects are stipulated in the laws.

“This gives the necessary instruments, the backing of the law and make them more potent. Not only will compliance increase, the quality of implementation will be improved”, she said.

“Similarly, the Chairman, Accelerate Disability in Emergencies Forum, Agbo Christian who spoke on behalf of PWDs said “We, the PWDs seek your support to sponsor an amendment to PWDs act to make it compulsory that 10 per cent of all social intervention projects of MDAs to be dedicated to the welfare of people living with disability.

“We want your colleagues to ensure that the federal government introduces an affordable transportation system that’s accessible for persons with disabilities.”

On his part, the CEO of TAF, Africa, Jake Epelle who is a disability inclusion champion said, “I would love for you to become the face of persons living with disability.”

He added that “With the ongoing constitution amendment, we need one holistic bill that you can sponsor so that at the end of the review we have a PWDs friendly legislation”.

  • 49ers to cut Arik Armstead, send him to NFL free agency, per reports

SANTA CLARA — Arik Armstead, the longest-tenured member of the 49ers’ current roster, will be released and test the NFL’s free agency market when negotiations open Monday, according to multiple reports.

Armstead was slated to make a $17.4 million base salary in what would have been his 10th season on the 49ers. He will count $25.9 million against this year’s salary cap, rather than $28.4 million had he stayed on his current roster, according to OverTheCap.com.

Foot and knee injuries hindered Armstead’s past two regular seasons, limiting him to 21 of 34 games. However, he overcome last November’s meniscus tear in his knee, as well as plantar fasciitis in his foot, to appear in all three playoff games, including the Super Bowl, where he sacked Patrick Mahomes in a 25-22 overtime loss to Kansas City.

Armstead, 30, was the 49ers’ Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee each of the past four seasons, signifying his community involvement and youth-education push, especially in his native Sacramento area. He was the 49ers’ top draft pick in 2015 out of Oregon (No. 17). In 116 games, he’s totaled 302 tackles, 33 1/2 sacks and 88 quarterback hits, as well as eight sacks in 12 playoff games.

Armstead’s anticipated release was first reported by Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz and NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, the latter of whom reported that Armstead declined a pay cut.

Negotiations with free agents open Monday at 9 a.m. Deals, including trades, cannot be ratified until Wednesday.

  • Sabotage: Schiff Calls For Intel Community to ‘Dumb Down’ Trump’s Intelligence Briefings

Democrats and Deep Staters signal intent to withhold key classified briefing details with Trump over Jack Smith’s classified documents case.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) called on the intelligence community to “dumb down” classified briefings for Donald Trump ahead of his official nomination as the Republican 2024 presidential candidate.

In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Schiff cited special counsel Jack Smith’s case against Trump over his retention of classified documents as the excuse to withhold information from the former president in the future.

“We’ve never had a situation where one of the candidates for president has been so criminally negligent when it comes to handling — if not worse — classified information,” Schiff said. “So I have to hope, and knowing the Intelligence Community as I do, that they will dumb down the briefing for Donald Trump.”

“That is, they will give him no more information than absolutely necessary. Nothing that would reveal sources or methods,” he continued. “Because we can’t trust that he will do the right thing with that information, he’s been so reckless.”

Schiff, a key figure in the Russia collusion hoax who’s running for Senate in California, said Trump’s access to classified information worries him.

“It is part of a long tradition,” Schiff said. The Intelligence Community “will be wary of what they share with him, and they should.”

Former Deep State figures like ex-CIA Director John Brennan and ex-National Security Adviser John Bolton likewise called for limits to what information Trump receives at the anticipated intelligence briefings traditionally afforded to presidential nominees.

“I’m pretty certain that my former intelligence colleagues will provide briefings that are not going to do any type of damage to source and methods in terms of providing information to Donald Trump that he could misuse,” Brennan claimed last week.

Bolton said on MSNBC, “I don’t think it makes any sense. I think it, really, puts whatever he is told at risk of being disclosed.”

Trump’s federal criminal case in Florida alleges that he illegally took boxes of classified documents from the White House with him to Mar-a-Lago and misled NARA investigators about their whereabouts.

Trump claims he was well within his authority as president to retain certain classified materials and regularly communicated with the National Archives and Records Administration over his possession of them.
