  • Major storm inundates Colorado with feet of snow

By Colleen Slevin and Thomas Peipert | Associated Press

DENVER — A major storm dumped heavy snow in Colorado on Thursday – forcing flight cancellations and shutting down a highway that connects Denver to Colorado ski resorts.

The storm, which began Wednesday night, delivered the slushy, wet snow typical for March, one of the snowiest months in Denver, and wasn’t expected to wind down until Friday morning. The heaviest accumulations were expected in Colorado’s Front Range region, where the eastern plains meet the Rocky Mountains and the vast majority of the state’s population lives. Most of the snow was falling in the foothills west of Denver.

Those higher elevations had up to 3 feet (1 meter) of snow by Thursday afternoon and more than another foot was forecast by Friday morning. Denver itself got up to about 8 inches (20 centimeters) by Thursday. Up to another 10 inches was expected in the Denver area.

A stretch of Interstate 70 was closed in the Colorado mountains, following numerous reports of vehicles stranded on the highway for hours. While a boon to Colorado’s ski industry, the extreme conditions shut down several ski resorts.

More than 75,000 customers were without power across Colorado on Thursday — about 2% of electric utility customers statewide and concentrated primarily in metro Denver and along the Front Range, according to poweroutage.us.

The storm also closed numerous schools and government offices Thursday and Denver schools were closed in advance for Friday.

Melanie Brooks was out walking her dogs Thursday morning in Denver.

“I’m kind of sad that I didn’t make it up to the mountains because now it’s tough to drive there, and I’m missing a powder day,” she said.

The Colorado State Patrol urged people to stay off the roads.

“Troopers are getting stuck trying to get to all the stranded motorists,” the patrol posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Since the storm is the rarer kind that brings more snow to the eastern half of the state rather than the mountains, it may not do much to feed the Colorado River, which supplies water to more than 40 million people in the West.

The storm started as rain in the Denver area and turned into snow. The area was expected to get 10 to 20 inches (25 to 50 centimeters) of snow, with up to 2 feet (60 centimeters) in the western suburbs, the weather service said.

Jarmila Schultz, 77, was tackling her sidewalks in shifts as the snow continued to fall.

“I have to get out early because I have to do it like four times because it’s going to snow all day,” she said, noting she has cleats on her boots to prevent her from falling. “It’s water, ice and it’s very hard for me to lift.”

But she still loves the snow.

“You know, in my time I skied, snow-shoed and did all this and I think Colorado’s incredible for those type of things.”

Denver deployed 36 residential plows starting at 3 a.m. Thursday with the plan to shave the top few inches of snow off streets, to help clear paths to main streets.

Tyler Barnes, a Miami native who drove a ride-share overnight, was trying snow-shoeing for the first time Thursday morning, and found it was pretty easy.

“It was really what I hoped it would be like,” he said. “I feel confident I could walk a long way in these.”

Denver International Airport was open Thursday, but about 800 flights were canceled with nearly 200 more delayed, according to Flightaware.com.

The snowstorm comes as other parts of the country face severe weather. Massive chunks of hail pelted parts of Kansas and Missouri on Wednesday night, with storms unleashing possible tornadoes in Kansas.

  • Man critically wounded after being shot on Brooklyn subway train

A 36-year-old man was in critical condition Thursday evening after he was shot in the head on a crowded subway train as it approached a Brooklyn, N.Y. station following a heated altercation, police said at a news conference.

The shooting took place after a 32-year-old man boarded a train at the Nostrand Avenue station at about 4:45 p.m., according to Michael Kemper, New York City Police Department’s chief of transit.

When he got on board, he was approached by a 36-year-old man, who, Kemper said, “was described by multiple witnesses as being aggressive and provocative towards the 32-year-old that just got on.”

Kemper said the two men had a verbal altercation before it quickly became physical. The older man displayed “either a knife or a razor blade toward” the younger man who had just boarded and then put the object down.

The verbal exchange continued before the 36-year-old man “removed a firearm from his jacket” and started walking toward the younger man “in a menacing way,” Kemper said, and the altercation became physical again.

At that point, police believe the younger man “removed” the gun from the 36-year-old and fired multiple shots at him, as the train was pulling into the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station.

Kemper said he did not think the two men knew each other. He also said there were one or two dozen passengers on the train at the time, and several filmed videos of the incident.

Kemper said there were police at the station who heard the gunshots and were able to respond quickly. The 36-year-old was transported to a hospital and was in critical condition and undergoing surgery at the time of the news conference on Thursday.

Kemper said it was still “to be determined” whether charges will be brought against the 32-year-old or whether his alleged actions will be deemed self-defense. At the time of the news conference, police were interviewing the alleged shooter, who was apprehended on scene.

  • Bankruptcy Laws Plus Inflation Equals Scam

Taxpayers pay into Social Security, pay for unemployment insurance, and all kinds of government programs. But even if we get our money back, each dollar in benefits is less than each dollar of tax that was paid.

At the end of 2022, investors all around the world who had bet big on cryptocurrency and had their cryptocurrency stored by the crypto exchange, FTX, received bad news.

Sam Bankman-Fried and other leaders of the exchange had been using cryptocurrency that was supposedly stored by the exchange to make bets on financial markets. And the FTX leadership was bad at trading and racked up huge losses. FTX declared bankruptcy and many of FTX leaders were convicted of financial crimes. For the investors of FTX, it was a painful experience that came from betting on cryptocurrency and the viability of crypto institutions that managed such assets. Expected losses were claimed to be in the billions.

But as of 2024, FTX’s bankruptcy lawyers began claiming that FTX creditors would be repaid in full. This claim is based on a technicality of bankruptcy law and is a feature that screws over investors and hides the reality of inflation.

When FTX went bankrupt, the debts it owed the people who deposited their cryptocurrency with FTX were recorded based on the US dollar value at the time. Of course, cryptocurrency is a wildly volatile asset, primarily used for speculation rather than as a store of value or for actual transactions. This volatility contributed to the FTX bankruptcy as the value of assets it held at any time, changed over time.

Currently, crypto prices are generally higher than at the time FTX went bankrupt, but it’s unclear how long this will last given crypto’s volatility. The US dollar is worth less than ever given two more years of the high inflation experienced during the Biden administration. This means that the cryptocurrency held by FTX can be exchanged for a relatively large amount of 2024 US dollars to repay debts that were measured in 2022 dollars. This is what FTX means by claiming it can now repay its creditors.

Imagine if a similar thing happened with a gold storage company. A company promises to store gold bars for its customers, secretly loses many of them in bad bets, and declares bankruptcy. The company records how much it owes its customers- not in the amount of gold lost- but in what bankruptcy lawyers claim it was worth in US dollars. Then years later, as the dollar continues to inflate away its value relative to gold, the gold investors are repaid in devalued dollars. This is how bankruptcy and inflation combine to hurt investors.

This is not the only area where ordinary people face a dynamic like this.

When an employer withholds taxes from your paycheck, and you have to wait for your tax return to get it back, you are giving an interest-free loan to the government. This would be true no matter the currency that the United States used. But the United States uses a fiat currency that’s losing value over time.

Not only does tax withholding mean that taxpayers are losing out on the interest they could have earned, they’re paid back in their refund in a currency that loses value month by month. Taxpayers pay into Social Security, pay for unemployment insurance, and all kinds of government programs. But even if we get our money back, each dollar in benefits is less than each dollar of tax that was paid.

Bankruptcy law makes this scheme obvious, but it affects every American taxpayer.

  • Aftermath Of Fire Incident At Chisco, Otti Orders All Commercial Facilities To Install Extinguishers

The Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has directed that every business facility in the state to install fire extinguishers to prevent the incessant fire outbreak being experienced in the state lately.

Over the last few days, there has been numerous fire incidents in Aba and environs.

The governor who disclosed this on Thursday when he visited the Chisco transport company located at Milverton Road said the crowded nature of the park was a recipe for disaster.

He revealed that government may relocate some of the motor parks along Milverton Avenue,Aba, to a more spacious area for ease of movement.

He said, “And I think it’s time we relocated the parks to a more spacious place. We can’t have everybody clustering in a place. This is a recipe for disaster, and I know that there are parks around Osisioma, part of Port-harcourt road .

” We are going to go and have a look at them and ensure that we relocate a lot of these vehicles to the parks so that it could be easy for us to move if there is any incident.”

The governor directed that henceforth, every business facility in the state should have fire extinguishers installed on their premises to forestall fire blazes and disclosed that the enforcement of that policy will commence next week.

He further made public that his administration will procure additional fire trucks to complement what is available in Aba.

Otti described the fire incident at Chisco office as unfortunate and commended the men of the state fire service for mobilizing and working hard to stop the fire.

“I am happy that the Fire Service mobilized and worked very hard to stop the fire . If you noticed, in the last few weeks, there have been several fire incidents in Aba. That tells me that there are things we’ve been doing that we are not doing well.

“In the first instance, every facility must have fire extinguishers and we are going to enforce it from next week.

“We will also try and get more fire trucks because I’m told that when the fire was going to over power the service men, they had to seek back up from Umuahia and that’s a distance. “

He, however, commiserated with the owners of the affected businesses over their loss and pledged to support them overcome some of their losses.

  • Fact Check: Cindy McCain may yet endorse Joe Biden in 2024, but this post shared her 2020 support out of context

Cindy McCain may still endorse President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, but she has not done so yet.

A March 7 Facebook post painted a different picture, however, when it shared a quote from McCain, the widow of former Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain.

“My husband John lived by a code: country first. We are Republicans, yes, but Americans foremost. There’s only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is Joe Biden,” the post quoted Cindy McCain as saying. “…He is a good and honest man. He will lead us with dignity.”

This Facebook post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

Although the quote in the Facebook post is accurate, it is lifted from two of Cindy McCain’s Sept. 22, 2020, tweets, when she endorsed Biden over incumbent President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Her endorsement made national headlines. A month prior, she appeared in a Democratic National Convention video, talking about her husband’s friendship with Biden, which developed while he and John McCain both served in the U.S. Senate. Biden has since said that he helped introduce John McCain to his future wife.

Cindy McCain is now the executive director of the United Nations’ World Food Programme and has most recently traveled to South Sudan to help alleviate starvation there, according to her X account. Sen. John McCain died in August 2018.

She and Biden  appeared together in September 2023 at an event at the Tempe Arts Center in Arizona to announce the creation of a library and museum honoring John McCain.

But a search of Nexis news archives, Google and Cindy McCain’s social media accounts show she has made no 2024 presidential election endorsement. PolitiFact reached out to the World Food Programme and the McCain Institute, where Cindy McCain serves as chairman emeritus of the board of trustees, but did not hear back before publishing.

We rate the claim that Cindy McCain has endorsed Biden in 2024 False.

  • Butte runs away with Elite Eight opener – Paradise Post

If anyone had doubts about the Butte College women’s basketball team heading into the Elite Eight of the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship in Walnut, the Roadrunners quickly swayed skeptics in its opener Thursday afternoon.

Top-ranked Butte parlayed its speed up and down the roster to lead wire to wire in an 84-60 victory over Long Beach City College. In Saturday’s semifinals, Butte (30-1) will play Glendale Community College (29-2), a 66-57 winner over Folsom Lake.

Entering the tournament, Butte had played — and beaten — all the quarterfinalists except Glendale and Long Beach (20-10). But the latter upset the only team to beat Butte this year, second-ranked Mount San Antonio College, to advance to this round in Mt. SAC’s gym.

East Los Angeles College coach Bruce Turner, analyst on the game’s livestream, called Butte “the best team in the state. They’re like a machine.”

All the parts came together. Morgan Trigueiro powered the first half, Jocelyn Medina took control in the second half, and Campbell Vieg kept the Roadrunners on track throughout while Coach Tyler Newton subbed early and often.

Medina finished with a double-double more common for a forward than a guard: 17 points and 10 rebounds. Vieg, another of the team’s seven freshmen, added 13 points and six assists. Trigueiro scored 14, Madalynn Bassett had 11, and Aubrey Prunty rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10.

As a team, the Roadrunners shot 55% — including 52.9% on three-pointers — and held Long Beach to 31.9% shooting.

Butte got off to a fast-breaking start. Back-to-back threes by Medina and Madalynn Bassett — the latter off a steal — gave the Roadrunners a 6-0 lead right out of the gate. After a layup from Long Beach post Chioma Okenwa, Vieg made a shot in the lane to put Butte ahead 8-2.

Then, just three minutes in, Newton subbed out all his starters. The starting slate returned two minutes later, their team ahead 12-5, and Butte went on an 11-2 run.

“We played like that a lot of the year,” Newton said by phone afterward. “We wanted to press a lot of the game, speed the game up and wear the other team out because they’re big. So we had a plan to go every three minutes (subbing) five for five and press — and I have a lot of confidence in my bench and the work they’ve put in this year.

    “It worked out for us.”

Twelve Roadrunners played in the first quarter, when they staked a 25-10 lead. They extended the margin to 19 points, 38-19, with 3:43 before halftime — having made 15 of their first 26 shots including 5 of 6 on threes.

Long Beach caught its breath in the final minutes of the half and scored seven unanswered points, capped by Jezelle Moreno’s three with 1:42 left. But Trigueiro sank a three with 1:03 left, and the Roadrunners corralled a rebound at the buzzer to keep their advantage at 41-26 — the first-quarter differential.

Trigueiro, averaging 16.5 points per game this postseason, had 10 in the first half as Butte outshot Long Beach 53% to 29%. The previous evening, Trigueiro was named to the all-state first team, Medina and Vieg made the second team, and Newton received his second Northern California coach of the year award in three years.

“We’re very well-rounded and very deep, so that’s an advantage for us at this time of the year for sure,” Newton said.

The second half brought much of the same. Butte opened with consecutive baskets by Sarah Tait, and an 18-2 run soon after extended the lead to 58-32. Medina’s follow at the buzzer and Vieg’s layup in the opening moments of the fourth quarter gave the Roadrunners’ their biggest cushion, 31 points.

The Vikings held their own the rest of the way but got no closer than 23. Moreno (12 points, nine rebounds) and Okenwa (11 points, 11 rebounds) led Long Beach, which bounced back from an 8-9 start of the season to reach the state quarterfinals.

Butte, in its third straight Elite Eight and second straight semifinal, seeks its first championship under the statewide playoff format. The team notched its first back-to-back spots in the Final Four with its 27th straight win since its lone setback.

“We saw Mt. SAC early,” Newton noted. “We were young; we were trying to figure ourselves out. It was a big game, they were a very experienced ballclub, so we came up short.

“I have full confidence in our group that if we play our game, if we stick to what we do and follow the scouting report, I think we’re pretty tough to beat.”
