  • Everton agree deal to sign Jarrad Branthwaite replacement

    Jarrad Branthwaite

Everton has reached an agreement in principle with Lyon for the transfer of centre-back Jake O’Brien, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Throughout the summer, the Toffees have been seeking a new defender, especially given the uncertain future of their star player Jarrad Branthwaite, who has attracted interest from Manchester United.

O’Brien, who joined Lyon from Crystal Palace in 2023 for £1 million, has quickly made an impression in Ligue 1, drawing the attention of several Premier League clubs.

Renowned for his aerial abilities and physical presence, the Republic of Ireland international is expected to seamlessly integrate into Sean Dyche’s system at Everton.

O’Brien has agreed to a five-year contract with the Merseyside club, although his medical examination might be delayed until Monday (29 July) to finalise the paperwork.

    O’Brien a potential Branthwaite replacement

As per reports, one reason behind O’Brien’s acquisition is the ongoing uncertainty regarding Branthwaite’s future.

Everton has already turned down two offers from United for Branthwaite earlier in the transfer window.

With the collapse of the Friedkin Group’s takeover, concerns about Everton’s financial situation have resurfaced.

There is apprehension that the club might need to sell another key player, especially after Amadou Onana’s £50 million move to Aston Villa.

Despite these financial concerns, Everton maintains that they do not intend to lower their valuation of £70 million-plus for Branthwaite.

They hope that a potential takeover by Kevin Malone could alleviate their financial challenges.

Branthwaite has expressed his dissatisfaction by refusing to sign a new contract unless it matches United’s offer of £160,000 per week, as reported by Mail Sport via centredevils.

Given this scenario, O’Brien might be seen as a potential replacement or cover if Branthwaite moves to United.

Erik ten Hag, who values a left-footed centre-back, might make a last-minute attempt to acquire Branthwaite, forcing Everton to reconsider their valuation.

O’Brien’s signing might provide some relief for United fans, as Everton might become more open to negotiations, although O’Brien is right-footed, a factor that matters less to Sean Dyche compared to Ten Hag.

The situation remains speculative, and only time will reveal the outcome.

Arsenal have received a boost ahead of their friendly against Manchester United, with three key players returning to training.

Manchester United have already played two pre-season games in 2024, experiencing a 1-0 loss to Rosenborg followed by a 2-0 victory over Rangers in Scotland, with goals from Amad Diallo and Joe Hugill.

New signing Leny Yoro made his unofficial debut after his £52 million transfer from Lille.

United’s squad, which includes recent returnees Rasmus Højlund and Christian Eriksen from their 2025 European Championship campaign with Denmark, has traveled to the USA for three more matches.

However, not all United players are expected to participate, with Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mianoo among those likely to return to training at Carrington after their holidays.

First-team coach Steve McClaren will oversee their initial fitness sessions upon their return.

Arsenal welcome back 3 key players ahead of United friendly

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal have received a major boost ahead of their friendly against United, with three key players returning to training.

Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli, and Kai Havertz, who reached the quarter-finals of their respective international tournaments, have rejoined the squad in Los Angeles after a three-week break.

Although they are unlikely to feature prominently in the upcoming friendly due to limited training sessions, their return is a positive sign for Arteta’s side.

Arsenal have themselves been preparing for the 2024/25 season with their own pre-season fixtures and recently defeated Bournemouth through a penalty shootout after the two sides were held to a 1-1 draw.

United will face Arsenal in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 28 at 01:00 BST, Real Betis in San Diego on Tuesday, August 1 at 03:00 BST, and conclude the tour in Columbia, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 4 at 00:45 BST.

  • Manchester United ‘consider’ Neco Williams as potential target

Manchester United are reportedly ‘considering’ former Liverpool defender in this transfer window.

The Red Devils have had a strong start to the window, securing the signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.

However, it seems that a new right-back is what’s on the agenda for the Red Devils this season.

The future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been greatly discussed in this transfer window.

Despite being arguably the best one-on-one right back in the English Premier League, Wan-Bissaka has been constantly linked with a move away from the club.

That’s primarily due to his playing style. Commentators have picked up that he’s better defensively than in offensive.

For a club like Manchester United, who primarily operate on the front foot, that tends to weaken the right hand of their attack.

When you compare him to Luke Shaw on the other side of the pitch 0r Diogo Dalot, the difference is noticeable in an attacking sense.

Having said that, his qualities in defence are without that.

Numerous opposition players think that they’ve gotten the better of Wan-Bissaka, only for the defender to stick a leg out of nowhere and tackle the ball clean.

It was that ability that made United spend £50m when they signed him from Crystal Palace in 2019.

But it seems that his time at the club is soon to be up, as United are open to accepting offers for the Englishman.

And to replace him United are looking to sign a more attacking right-back this window.

So far the club have reportedly registered interest in multiple full-backs including Denzel Dumfries and Noussair Mazraoui, with whom United are in advanced talks.

Man United ‘consider’ ex-Liverpool defender Neco Williams

Now, a new report from HITC via Manchester Evening News, speculates that United are also keeping tabs on Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams.

Neco Williams formerly played for Liverpool, making 33 senior appearances.

The links come amid reports suggesting United are looking for a new right-back.

West Ham have apparently already had a bid rejected for Williams, while Milan, Tottenham and Newcastle have all been connected with interest.

It remains to be seen who United actually sign this window to fill the right-back role.

Currently, Mazraoui seems the most probable addition to the squad, but any deal is contingent upon Wan-Bissaka’s departure.

  • Explained: How set-piece coach Andreas Georgson transformed Southampton

    Andreas Georgson in training

Andreas Georgson is all set to join United as their new set-piece coach with the Red Devils triggering the buyout clause in his contract as manager of Lillestrom.

United will need to part ways with £280,000 as compensation to the Norwegian club, however they feel this is worth the money for his exceptional talent.

Georgson already has links to the senior staff at Old Trafford, having been recruited by Jason Wilcox whilst Wilcox was the director of football at Southampton. His work focussing on set-pieces at Brentford, Arsenal and Southampton has given him an excellent understanding of the importance of set-pieces.

Speaking of his former colleague, Wilcox labelled the Swedish coach an “expert in what he does”, feeling that the 42-year-old truly understands the game model being built at Old Trafford.

To really understand the impact that Georgson could have at United, lets take a look at his time a Southampton and how he transformed the shortest team in the Championship at the time, into the best with set-pieces.

What was Georgson faced with joining Southampton?

The 2022/23 Premier League season was absolutely shocking for Southampton, ultimately leading to their relegation. The club entered the relegation zone on matchday 11 after a run of five straight loses with Wolves (eighteenth place), Brentford (eighth place), Aston Villa (thirteenth place), Everton (fifteenth place) and Manchester City (second place) all taking victories.

Draws to West Ham and Arsenal, with a win over Bournemouth were enough to get the Saints out of the relegation zone before a 1-0 loss to twelfth place Crystal Palace dropped Southampton back into the relegation zone with the club being bottom of the table for 20 fixtures out of the 38.

By the end of the season, the Saints had conceded a total of 73 goals, with a goal difference of -37, with only 25 points all season with six wins and seven draws. Of these goals, 13 were conceded from set pieces which made Southampton the second worst team in the Premier League to this stat. Across the entire season, the club had only managed to score six headers and three direct free kicks in 38 games.

Georgson joined the Saints on 4th August 2023, the opening day of the 2023/24 Championship season where Southampton beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1. Despite the victory, Sheffield’s goal came from a corner, marking yet another goal conceded from a set piece.

What were the results of Georgson’s work?

By the end of the 2023/24 season, Southampton were promoted back to the Premier League, having been in promotion play-off places for 38 fixtures out of 46, conceding 63 goals, with only 7 of them from set-pieces, the best record in the league.

On the attack, the Saints scored 87 goals, giving them a +14 goal difference, with 14 of the goals coming from set-pieces even though the Southampton squad were technically the second shortest in the division.

How does he achieve such a drastic change?

Georgson’s tactics when it comes to set-pieces is to use a mixed strategy of zonal play and man marking. By doing this you can defend or attack areas by pressuring weaknesses in the opposition as well as resisting their strongest players.

When looking at attacking corners, Georgson regularly uses the second man ready to receive a short ball to then cross into the box. This creates a threat of a short corner, drawing out one of the defenders from the box to cover the second man. Alongside this, decoy runs are set up to lose players and create even more space, with flick-ons practiced in the chaos to support tap in goals.

His main technique has been to use five men in the box, with three on the back of the six-yard box and two perfectly in the centre. Alongside these men in the box, three players take position around the edge of the penalty box in order to win possession back quickly if the ball is headed clear or to receive the ball from a short corner.

The two players in the centre of the six yard box have one main task, to attach themselves to the zonal defenders and then make decoy runs to the front of the box, pulling the zonal defenders away from the middle of the box, this being the target area. This also allows for these tow players to flick the ball on to the back of the six year box if the cross comes up short, or to intentionally play this move if the zonal pressure is too heavy.

This technique of attaching a man to a zonal defender almost forces the defender to switch into man-marking by making them feel that attacker is their responsibility. The decoy run then pulls this man-marking zonal defender away from the zone they were defending, disrupting their sole purpose in the set-piece.

Georgson has also been known to encourage touch-tight movement, whereby the attackers at he back of the six-yard box bunch tight together, then when moving pass by exceptionally close. This allows for one of the attacking players to move at the defenders, taking their attention, while another attacker moves behind them, forcing the other defenders to move around the blocking attacker. This move prevents the defender from moving side by side with all of the attackers, again, creating more space in the target area.

By overloading the six yard box, it forces the defenders into the goal space as well which works in two ways; it creates more chaos for flick-ons with such a densely populated area causing vulnerability to react, plus it opens the edge of the box up to allow for more time for a longer range shot from the men on the edge of the box if the ball is headed clear.

In wide freekick situations the same tactic as above with corners is used with the ball coming from a very similar position.

In the dying moments of games if a win or draw is vital and the team are behind, Georgson utilises the goalkeeper on the attack. Whilst this may look like a move of desperation, like all of his decisions, it’s highly tactical. Bringing the goalkeeper into the box creates another target man at the front of box, but also another threat for the defenders to worry about. With the tight movement as well, this also generates more space.

A perfect example of this was against Preston North End in the early fixtures of last seasons Championship. Fifth place Southampton were 2-1 down in extra time to fourth place Preston and a corner was awarded. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu raced up for the corner, came front post, get his head on the ball flicking it back to the target area, which ultimately ended up deflecting off of Ched Evans and going down as an own goal. Either way, the score was 2-2 thanks to the use of the goalkeeper in such a vital corner.

    What this means for United

In the 2023/24 season, United conceded the third most corners in the league, with over 40% of their defending corners resulting in a shot.

On the attack, of the 57 goals scored, only eight of them were from headers, with two being from corners.

With set-pieces being such a massive part of today’s game, these stat are incredibly poor for such a top tier club. By utilising Georgson’s tactics, the Red Devils can become much more clinical in front of goal as well as reverse engineering the tactics to be more prepared when defending spot kicks.

Looking at how some of the United squad can fit into this you can clearly see the potential a system like this has at Old Trafford.

New signing Joshua Zirkzee is an absolute man mountain, towering at 6’4”, making him a great use as a central decoy runner to knock the ball to the back, or to be at the back as a target man. Players like Alejandro Garnacho and Diogo Dalot are well adept to supplying the ball in so could stack up as the short pass options. Then players like Bruno Fernandes we’ve seen convert long range efforts so could be clinical on the edge of the box with a bit more time.

It’s fair to say that Georgson’s track record and tactical mind make him very deserving of the opportunity to join Old Trafford. Whether he deploys the same tactics as he did at Southampton remains to be seen, but United can definitely benefit from his expertise in set-pieces this coming season.

Recent Manchester United signing, Leny Yoro has now found his home in Manchester after leaving LOSC Lille.

The deal which brought the 18-year-old to United has set the club back £52.1 million, however the reputation he comes with could see this as a brilliant move for the Red Devils.

Now, Yoro, with his £145,000 per week and £7.55 million a year wage, has found his spectacular new home in Cheshire.

    Yoro finds his new home

  • Manchester United in advanced talks to sign Noussair Mazraoui

    Noussair Mazraoui

It seems that a new right-back is what’s on the agenda for Premier League clubs this season.

Not are only Manchester United in the market for one, but so are West Ham United.

One player linked with both sides is Noussair Mazraoui.

Bayern Munich and Morocco right back is said to be available for transfer in this window.

It was previously believed that West Ham were in the drivers seat for his signature.

That’s not the case any longer.

Sky Sport Germany are reporting that the deal to take Mazraoui to West Ham United is now off.

Florian Plettenberg has tweeted to say that the club and the player had an agreement with the Hammers. Bayern were set to receive €15.5m and an additional €4m in add-ons.

However, an agreement with the player’s agent was not achieved and West Ham have walked away from the deal.

He then adds that United are now pushing to sign Noussair Mazraoui and the clubs are in advanced talks to complete the transfer.

If the reports are to be true, then this would represent the third deal of this transfer window for United.

  • Manchester United now want to sign 22-year-old midfielder in swap deal – report

Manchester United are desperate to sign new defensive midfielder to partner alongside rising star Kobbie Mainoo.

The Red Devils have been scoring Europe for talent, needing a replacement for waining Casemiro.

The Brazilian veteran has definitely seen better days and so United are looking to part ways with the midfielder.

in their search for a replacement, United have identified PSG’s Manuel Ugarte as their top target for the position. However, Ugarte’s price tag of £59 million appears to steep for the Red Devils.

Now, United are reportedly turning to Inter Milan with a potential player-swap deal on the cards.

United and Inter Milan’s potential player-swap

With funds being tight and the lack of buyers making offers, it’s understandable that United would want to use one of their assets as leverage in a deal.

It’s been reported that Inter have been interested in Aaron Wan-Bissaka for some time now. Wan-Bissaka is in the finals year of his contract now and has recently rejected a move to West Ham United in favour of a move to the Italian Champions. Dan Ashworth has included the right-back in a list of players he wants to offload, with this summer being the last opportunity for the club to cash in on the right-back.

Seems like a good move all round with United now interested in one of Inter’s defensive midfielders.

With Inter refusing to part ways with Denzel Dumfries unless a significant offer is submitted, the Red Devils and now focusing on another star at the San Siro.

Reports from InterLive claim that United are turning their attention to Kristjan Asllani.

Despite limited game-time, Asllani has made the most of the opportunities he’s had, having a 93% pass success rate and a 72% long-ball accuracy rate.

The Albania international has also shown his strength in Serie A by winning 60% of the duels he’s taken on.

Whilst this could be an unexpected signing for United given the limited time on the pitch last season, he could be a hidden gem that alongside Mainoo, could transform the midfield at Old Trafford.

  • Christian Eriksen in “no rush” to look for a new club

    Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Antony

Christian Eriksen, the Danish midfielder for Manchester United, has made it clear he is in “no rush” to look for a new club.

At 32, Eriksen returned to United for pre-season preparations after competing in the European Championship, joining his teammate Rasmus Hojlund.

Eriksen is entering the final year of his contract with Manchester United. From the club’s perspective, they would prefer not to retain him for another year if he plans on leaving for free when his contract expires.

This stance may appear self-serving, but given his limited impact last season, it is understandable.

Eriksen’s playing time was significantly reduced, culminating in his role as an unused substitute in the FA Cup final.

This contrasts sharply with the previous year when the former Ajax and Tottenham star played a crucial role in United’s Carabao Cup victory, their first trophy in six years.

There have been speculations about a possible return to Ajax, where Eriksen spent four years before his stints with three Premier League clubs.

However, Eriksen has emphasised that he is content at United and is not in a hurry to make any significant decisions regarding his future.

Eriksen expresses contentment at Man United

In an interview with BBC Sport, Eriksen expressed his satisfaction with his current situation, saying, “I am really happy at United.

“I have had two very good years and am going into my third.

“It is a special club and a special place. Also, my family is settled in Manchester, so I am in no rush.”

He continued, “Obviously I want to play as much as possible and do everything I can.

“But that is nothing to do with the club – it is up to you and the manager. But in terms of how I feel, I feel very good at United.”

Eriksen’s comments indicate a strong commitment to his current club, despite the uncertainties surrounding his future as he enters the last year of his contract.

The club and fans will be watching closely to see how his situation unfolds in the coming months.

  • Las Palmas unveil official signing of former Manchester United superstar

    Las Palmas stadium

After a sixteenth place finish last season in LaLiga, Las Palmas are turning to a former Manchester United star in an attempt to fight for a higher finish in the league.

Last season saw the club’s return to LaLiga since their relegation to the Spanish second tier back in 2018.

Thankfully the club avoided relegation by seven points, with the Gran Canaria side calling in reinforcements to ensure they stay up this coming season.

Las Palmas recorded only ten wins and ten draws with a total of 18 losses and a negative goal difference of -14 last time out.

Their lack of goals up front is clearly something the club need to fix.

And they’ve turned their attention to that in this summer transfer window with their latest two purchases that include the signing of an ex-United wonderkid.

Las Palmas hopeful with new signing

In order to get something else in attack, Las Palmas have brought in former Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj.

The Belgian has joined the club on loan from parent club Sevilla after a season of limited game time.

Making only eight appearances in LaLiga, all off of the bench, the winger’s time to Seville has been far below what he achieved during his time on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir.

Playing at the Turkish club for half a season in 2023, Januzaj registered three goals and three assists in 17 games.

MUFC fans will have fond memories of Adnan Januzaj.

Whilst at the club, Januzaj was marked as one to watch, with expectations of the star having an incredible career ahead of him.

He burst onto the seen in David Moyes’ disastrous season as the one high point of his tenure. There was a real belief that he’d go on to become the next Ryan Giggs.

Unfortunately for Januzaj, it didn’t work out like that.

Struggling to stamp his mark under the numerous managers that came after, Januzaj was sold to Real Sociedad for £9.8m in 2017 after failing to fulfil his undoubted potential. Even though the club were happy to sanction the sale, such was the belief in Adnan Januzaj that United inserted a buyback clause in the sale. It was, however, never activated.

Showing glimpses of his talent in Sociedad, there was still evidence that there was a player there. While with Sociedad, Januzaj recorded 23 goals and 21 assists in 168 games showing his versatility on both wings.

However, it was a familiar story as Real released him on a free after struggling to unleash the player the world thought he was.

Las Palmas will be hoping that the winger will find the kind of form he showed at times for both United and Sociedad.

A firing Adnan Janzuaj could help the squad rise LaLiga and the club will hope that the 29-year-old will have a similar impact on their club as another former United player had in LaLiga last season. Mason Greenwood was the best player for Getafe last season and Las Palmas will hope that Januzaj will sprinkle some of that United magic for them also.

Adnan Januzaj joined by Oli McBurnie

Januzaj is not the only player with English Premier League experience joining the club.

Oli McBurnie, former Sheffield United and Swansea City striker, has also signed as a free agent. McBurnie has penned a three-year contract at the club.

In a situation similar to Januzaj, albeit on a lesser scale, McBurnie has always shown that he’s had the talent. But it’s just not worked out for him at the highest level.

Las Palmas are clearly banking on both players to finally fulfil their potential in sunny Tenerife. If Januzaj can supply the balls for McBurnie to finish, it could be an exciting strikeforce for their fans.

  • Fabrizio Romano provides transfer update Sergio Reguilon

    Sergio Reguilon

Rumors have surfaced suggesting that Manchester United may reconsider a deal for Sergio Reguilon, as they face issues with their current left-back options.

Luke Shaw has returned from injury, but concerns linger regarding his ability to maintain fitness throughout the entire season.

Additionally, Tyrell Malacia has been out of action for over a year with no clear return date.

Fabrizio Romano’s update on Sergio Reguilon to Man United

Fabrizio Romano, in his column for Caught Offside, stated that Reguilon, who joined United on loan last summer but saw his stint cut short in January, is reportedly very interested in returning to Old Trafford.

It is reported that Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sell Reguilon this year rather than arrange another loan deal.

Currently, Reguilon is reportedly not in the plans of Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, and the club is prepared to let him go this summer.

The Spanish left-back, formerly of Real Madrid, could be a cost-effective solution for United’s left-back position under Erik ten Hag.

Despite Reguilon’s interest in returning to Manchester United, Fabrizio Romano noted that there have been no advanced discussions between Tottenham and United regarding a deal.

He stated, “What is important to say is that at the moment, there is still nothing advanced or nothing concrete between Tottenham and Man United for Reguilon. So nothing is really advanced on this one.”

Romano further added, “But in general, Sergio Reguilon was very happy at Manchester United. So if tomorrow, Man United decide to return for Sergio Reguilon, the player will be keen on the move.

“He loved his time at Manchester United, was a short time, but he was very happy with the club, with the tactical ideas and with all the points involved in Manchester United.”

Reguilon had a challenging period at United due to persistent injuries, making only 12 appearances across all competitions during his time at the club.
