  • 5 things we learnt from Aston Villa vs Manchester United

Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa was another underwhelming performance, extending their winless run to five games.

Although United weren’t awful and largely restricted Aston Villa, this was a dull affair.

In a match lacking spark and creativity, both sides struggled to break each other down.

United’s attacking issues were clear, as they failed to create many meaningful chances.

Villa came closest to snatching a late victory, but Diogo Dalot made a crucial block in the dying moments to preserve the clean sheet.

United’s best moment came earlier in the match when Bruno Fernandes rattled the crossbar with a powerful free kick, but beyond that, they rarely troubled Villa’s defence.

Erik ten Hag made a bold decision by dropping both of his first-choice centre-backs, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt, opting instead for Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire.

Despite concerns about this unusual defensive pairing, the gamble paid off as United secured a clean sheet, with Evans delivering a man-of-the-match performance.

While the defence was strong, the lack of creativity and cutting edge up front remains a major concern.

With the team now winless in five games, pressure continues to mount on ten Hag to find solutions.

Here are five things we learned from United’s underwhelming draw against Villa:

  • Manchester United target Barcelona man to replace Erik ten Hag

With each passing day, it appears increasingly likely that Erik Ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United is nearing its end.

The Dutch coach has struggled to find success, dropping points in three consecutive Premier League games.

The recent 0-0 draw against Aston Villa has only intensified speculation about his future at the club.

So far this season, the Red Devils have secured just three victories: a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham, a 3-0 triumph against Southampton, and a commanding 7-0 victory over Barnsley.

For a club of Manchester United’s stature, such a record is far from acceptable, leaving them 14th in the Premier League table.

It’s no secret that the club is already exploring potential replacements.

According to insider information previously reported by CentreDevils, Ruud van Nistelrooy is poised to step in as interim manager if Ten Hag is dismissed.

He would hold the reins until a world-class manager is appointed, a move anticipated in the summer of 2025.

Manchester United have reportedly compiled a shortlist of managerial candidates.

Based on information CentreDevils has received, Julian Nagelsmann and Xabi Alonso are at the top of this list.

Media reports also suggest that prominent names like Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank are among the other candidates being considered.

New name joins the managerial shortlist to replace Erik ten Hag

A new report from Catalan source Nacional suggests that Manchester United are prepared to make a move for former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez to succeed Ten Hag.

The Spanish tactician is currently out of a job.

Xavi served as Barcelona’s head coach for two and a half seasons, during which he won La Liga once and earned praise for his team’s attractive style of play.

However, he reached a point where further progress seemed unattainable, leading to his departure—a decision that many Barcelona fans opposed.

One of the significant criticisms of Ten Hag has been his lack of tactical clarity.

In contrast, Xavi is known for his meticulous approach to team setup and player roles, sometimes to the point of rigidity.

Having learned from a world-class coach like Pep Guardiola, the Blaugrana legend emphasizes a positional and disciplined style of management.

For a club like Manchester United, which has a roster full of promising talent and is focused on building towards future success, Xavi could be an ideal fit.

His philosophy aligns with nurturing project players and implementing a clear tactical framework.

It remains to be seen whether Erik Ten Hag can retain his managerial position following the disappointing draw against Aston Villa.

The club’s next moves will be crucial as they aim to climb back up the Premier League standings.

  • Manchester United to appoint new coach

Manchester United are now winless in five games after drawing at Villa Park this afternoon.

Heading into the international break, they sit 14th in the English Premier League after their worst start in Premier League history.

Last summer, United brought in three new coaches to assist Erik ten Hag in his coaching duties.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rene Hake and Andreas Georgson all joined the Dutchman in the dugout.

INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe want to run United more efficiently in every aspect, from the coaching staff to the transfer policy, all the way down to the staff lunch provisions.

And it seems that a new man is coming into the club to aid with the coaching department.

But it’s not for the first team.

One key part of the club’s future prosperity is the state of the academy.

The Red Devils have always leaned on Carrington’s produce, with four of their starters in today’s game coming from their academy.

During the early months of the new regime, the club have stocked the academy with promising stars for the future.

Chido Obi-Martin officially joined the club on Friday as the latest recruit.

And now the focus has switched to the coaching side.

United are to appoint Simon Wiles from League 2 side Salford City to be their new U16s coach according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The 29-year-old’s playing career saw him move around between lower league sides before stepping into a coaching role at Bamber Bridge in 2015.

He progressed through the ranks to join Fleetwood Town as the head coach of their U18s and eventually their senior manager in 2021.

After this, he joined Salford City as a first team coach and had a short spell as the side’s interim manager.

It was announced in September that Simon Wiles would be leaving Salford to take up an opportunity with an unnamed English Premier League side.

It’s now been made clear that the side is Manchester United.

He’s set to move to Old Trafford imminently.

United’s academy have produced some of the best football players in history, including George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and David Beckham.

Currently, United’s U18s are one of the best teams in the country at their level.

They sit second in the U-18 Premier League North and are coming off the back of a domestic trebling-winning season.

The new ownership’s desire to improve the academy will surely pay dividends in the future, as United look to move past the infamous Glazer reign.

  • Harry Maguire suffers major injury vs Aston Villa

    Harry Maguire

Manchester United drew 0-0 with Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.

There was enormous pressure on Erik ten Hag ahead of kickoff, with the United manager looking vulnerable after a poor week and with the international break looming.

But a point at Villa Park won’t hurt him, with United looking much more compact than in recent games.

Despite that, he can’t avoid the fact that this is United’s worst ever start to a Premier League season.

They face Brentford at Old Trafford when the Premier League returns. Another huge game for the Dutch manager.

    Harry Maguire injury update

At the halfway mark of the game, Harry Maguire suffered an injury and was forced off the pitch.

He walked off very gingerly, assisted by the medical staff.

Mike McGrath of The Telegraph reported that Maguire was seen leaving Villa Park in a protective plastic boot.

Although the severity of the injury is still unclear, wearing a plastic boot is usually a concerning sign, suggesting that it might be a serious issue.

In a post-match interview, when Erik ten Hag was asked about Maguire’s injury, the Dutchman responded: “He didn’t feel well after half-time, so I had to take him off.”

There wasn’t much clarification from Ten Hag, and it seems we’ll have to wait until tomorrow or the day after to get a full update on the extent of Maguire’s injury.

This is a significant setback for Ten Hag, who is now left with only two fit right-footed center-backs: Matthijs de Ligt and Victor Lindelof.

  • Manchester United prepare £46m bid for in-form attacker

After spending £179m on arrivals in the summer, Manchester United’s new ownership are already planning for future transfer windows.

United sit 14th in the Premier League table with seven points, and are winless in four games.

Despite the addition of strikers Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund in the last two summer windows, United have scored the second fewest goals in the league this season (5).

Thus, the board are looking at the January transfer window to solve their issues in front of goal.

United are set to bid £46m for AC Milan star Christian Pulisic, according to Milan Live.

The winger has rediscovered his form after a tough four years at Chelsea and is already being linked to other Premier League clubs like Liverpool.

Whether the USMNT star is willing to join United or if Milan would consider offers for him is currently unknown.

Pulisic has scored five goals and contributed two assists in eight games this season.

He has mainly operated from the right-wing for Milan but has also shown that he is comfortable on the left and through the middle as a number 10.

CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE CENTRE DEVILS WHATSAPP GROUP CHAT NOW!

Transfermarkt value Christian Pulisic at around £33m, over £10m less than what United are willing to pay.

Milan only spent £18.8m on him in 2023 but Chelsea have a significant sell-on clause if Pulisic departs.

For this reason, the Serie A giants would likely be stubborn in their negotiations with United, who are especially known for overspending on transfers.

For now, Milan are happy with Pulisic’s progression and believe he will be a key player this season, according to manager Paulo Fonseca.

“Christian is fantastic. His quality is incredible, he will be very important this season too”, Fonseca said.

However, if Pulisic is available in the future, United may look to give the American a second chance in the Premier League.

  • Why did Erik ten Hag substitute Marcus Rashford?

In Manchester United’s recent 3-3 draw with Porto, Marcus Rashford found himself at the centre of attention after being substituted at halftime, despite playing a key role in the first half.

Marcus Rashford had put in an excellent performance, scoring past Diogo Costa after 7 minutes before setting up Rasmus Hojlund for a second.

Rashford was back to his brilliant best, driving at defenders from the left and committing sometimes even 3 men before beating them and getting a shot away.

When Erik ten Hag pulled him off, many fans assumed it was due to injury.

However, the manager later revealed that the substitution was simply rotation.

Erik ten Hag said “We have to rotate” when speaking to TNT Sports, sparking debate as to why he was taken off.

Rio Ferdinand was also confused by this substitution, mentioning although he could have done better for the 2nd Porto goal, he was lively and direct all game.

This isn’t the first time Rashford has been dropped after a strong showing.

After scoring 3 goals in 2 games against Barnsley and Southampton earlier in the season, Rashford was then dropped for the next fixture.

This shocked many United fans as Rashford is widely considered Manchester United most clinical forward when fit and firing.

So why did Erik ten Hag drop Marcus Rashford when it looked like he had just come back to form and why did he repeat this mistake yesterday?

CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE CENTRE DEVILS WHATSAPP GROUP CHAT NOW!

    Tactical

Firstly, could Rashford’s substitution have been purely tactical from Erik ten Hag.

Marcus Rashford’s work rate can at times be poor, he struggles to consistently track back and provide defensive cover.

Throughout the first half against Porto, Rashford often left Lisandro Martinez exposed.

With Diogo Dalot inverting into midfield from left back, Martinez was forced to deal with Porto’s attackers without adequate support on the left flank.

Martinez struggles with defending 1v1 and big spaces and the lack of help was exposing him to these two weaknesses.

Rashford’s attacking contributions were undeniable, but his lack of defensive discipline may have frustrated ten Hag, prompting the manager to bring on Garnacho.

    Disagreement?

Whilst ten Hag has insisted that the decision was part of his rotation strategy, this isn’t the first time Rashford has been taken off unexpectedly.

The forward was similarly dropped after scoring three goals in consecutive games against Southampton and Barnsley.

This pattern raises the possibility that something else might be at play, such as a disagreement between Rashford and ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag already has a history of falling out with United players.

Falling out with Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho already in his time at the club.

Freezing Jadon Sancho out of the club in particular shows that ten Hag is not afraid to go public with his player disagreements and would not have been afraid to punish Rashford by substituting him.

It seems illogical to substitute one of United’s most important players when he’s contributing both goals and assists.

Could there be a rift between player and manager?

The repeated nature of these decisions has led some to speculate that their relationship may not be as smooth as it seems.

    Alejandro Garnacho?

Alejandro Garnacho’s introduction in place of Marcus Rashford raised some eyebrows, but the young Argentine’s excellent form this season has been hard to overlook.

Garnacho has impressed with his explosive dribbling, pace, and defensive commitment, which Rashford has sometimes been criticized for neglecting.

His ability to track back and help defensively, especially with Diogo Dalot inverting into midfield, made him a valuable option for ten Hag.

Garnacho’s energy and work rate were seen as key by ten Hag as United looked to maintain balance in both attack and defense.

However, many were puzzled as to why Rashford, not Amad Diallo, was taken off.

Diallo had a relatively quiet first half, struggling to impose himself on the right wing.

Substituting Amad Diallo might have allowed both Rashford and Garnacho to remain on the pitch, maintaining an attacking threat.

That being said, the substitution could also have been pre-planned, with ten Hag managing Rashford’s minutes carefully given his recent uptick in form and the upcoming match against Aston Villa.

  • Paul Pogba available on a free transfer

    Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba left Manchester United in 2022 on a free transfer, after 226 appearances in his second spell at the club.

He returned in 2016 for a then-world record transfer fee of £89.3m.

During his time at United, he had 87 goal contributions in all competitions and won two trophies.

After rejoining Juventus, Pogba was provisionally suspended from football after testing positive for DHEA – a banned substance that raises testosterone levels.

Pogba’s initial ban was set to last four years, but was reduced to 18 months yesterday.

Reports suggested that Pogba will be eligible to train with a club in January, but will have to wait until March for his return to match action.

However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Juventus want to terminate the 31-year-old’s contract, which will make Pogba available on a free transfer.

Some French news outlets believe that Pogba will not look to continue his career in Europe and will start again in the MLS.

With the midfielder’s high salary demands, it is unlikely that a top European club would risk paying big money to sign him, as he last played a professional game in September 2023.

In the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), judges concluded that Pogba unintentionally took DHEA, which led to the reduction in his ban.

Throughout the ruling process, Pogba has vehemently denied any such violation of anti-doping regulations.

After his sentence was reduced yesterday, the Frenchman released a statement on social media.

“Finally the nightmare is over. I can look forward to the day when I can follow my dreams again.”

“I always stated that I never knowingly breached world anti-doping agency regulations when I took a nutritional supplement prescribed to me by a doctor, which does not affect or enhance the performance of male athletes”, he explained.

“This has been a hugely distressing period in my life because everything I have worked so hard for has been put on hold.”

  • Is it time to talk about Lisandro Martinez?

Lisandro Martinez started in the heart of Manchester United’s defence alongside Matthijs de Ligt during the 3-3 UEFA Europa League draw against Porto.

Lisandro Martinez has been a key defensive figure under Erik ten Hag.

The Argentine has played a crucial role in United’s success since his arrival.

When Martinez signed from Ajax in 2022, fans were thrilled with his tenacity, ball-playing ability, and leadership at the back.

His debut season was nothing short of exceptional, quickly becoming a fan favourite due to his aggressive defensive style.

However, Lisandro Martinez has recently seemed to be a shadow of the player of two years ago, raising questions.

His second season was hampered by injuries, limiting his game time and interrupting his rhythm.

Now, in his third season, Martinez looks uncharacteristically shaky.

His recent performance against Porto raised further questions, with the Argentine seemingly struggling to impose himself defensively.

This was on the back of a similarly poor performance against Tottenham Hotspur and a challenge in a game against Crystal Palace where he could easily have been sent off.

Some of the weaknesses seen in his game have sparked debates over whether Martinez is still the right man to lead United’s defence or whether deeper issues are plaguing him.

With Harry Maguire coming off the bench and scoring a stoppage time equaliser, many are asking questions.

Is it time to seriously evaluate Martinez’s form and contributions?

In this article, we explore three key categories that have contributed to Martinez’s struggles.

  • Chido Obi-Martin breaks silence after officially joining Manchester United

Chido Obi-Martin officially signs for Manchester United

Image Credits: Instagram / Chido Obi-Martin

Chido Obi-Martin is now officially a Manchester United player.

The wonderkid striker signed on the dotted line yesterday with the club.

When it was revealed in July that the striker had visited Carrington, not many believed it.

That’s because Obi-Martin was making a huge splash in the Arsenal academy and AFC fans believed that he was set to make a major impact at the Emirates.

But surprise turned into anticipation as the young Denmark striker hinted that he was on the way to Old Trafford.

    And now it’s been completed.

CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE CENTRE DEVILS WHATSAPP GROUP CHAT NOW!

The transfer has taken slightly longer than anticipated due to the English Premier League needing to ratify the transfer.

During that period of time, Obi-Martin hasn’t made any public comments on his future.

Aside from seeing the occasion video with him practising his finishing, there hasn’t been much comments from the player’s side while things get wrapped up.

The last public post he had made was to thank Arsenal for the time that he’d spent learning his craft there.

    But that has changed.

Taking to his Instagram page, Chido Obi-Martin has finally broken his silence and commented on his move to Manchester United.

“Very happy to sign with this amazing club, time to focus and achieve all my dreams. Thanks to everyone who has helped me get this far. @manchesterunited”

Along with the caption, Obi-Martin has shared five images of himself.

Four are pictures of him signing his contract and the last one is a bit special.

It’s a throwback photo of the youngster from his youth and it’s him wearing a Manchester United kit with the DHL sponsor on the front.

This seems a major indication that Chido Obi-Martin has been a Man Utd fan from his youth.

That seems to explain reports that he decided to join Manchester United for reasons that had nothing to do with money.

MUFC fans will now be looking forward to seeing the youngster play at Old Trafford in the not too distant future.
