    IGAD Ends 4-Day Learning Mission To ECOWAS Commission

    As part of the effort to strengthen cooperation between African sub-regional institutions, officials from intergovernmental Authority on Development have rounded off four days learning mission to Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission.

    At the flag-off ceremony that took place in Abuja Nigeria, on Monday, Vice President, ECOWAS Commission, Damien Tchintchidja, who spoke on the importance of the programme, urged participants to be focused, and ensure that the issues raised during the learning session are taken seriously.

    Speaking on topic “Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on a learning mission to ECOWAS on the implementation of free movement of persons regimes and migration management”, the vice president  averred that the learning exercise is going to assist participants with opportunity to share the experience gained in the area of free movement regime and enhancement of migration statistics.

    Tchintchidja stressed that upon completion of the programme, participants would have equipped themselves with knowledge on movement of person’s regime within  the region by examining the legislation, policies, regulations, procedures and instruments that brought success, as well as procedures and instruments that made the regime an effective tool for peace, development and cooperation in the region.

    She stated that Programme of this nature would encourage regional integration and collaboration among member states, calling on all hands to be on deck so that knowledge gained at tbe learning programme can be put into use for the betterment of the region.

    The vice president commended  ECOWAS experts for drafting the IGAD Protocol on the Free Movement of Persons which according to her would foster peace, unity and economic growth in the region.

    She acknowledged the support of international partners, including the European Union, IOM and GIZ, and expressed appreciation for their support for ECOWAS initiatives.

    On behalf of Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, IGAD Executive Secretary, the IGAD Permanent Representative to the AU and Head of the IGAD delegation, Ambassador Maureen Achieng, expressed appreciation for the leadership of ECOWAS and the Nigerian government for facilitation of the meeting.

    The Ambassador also highlighted IGAD’s achievements in developing protocols for the free movement of people and trans humans.

    “Our cooperation with ECOWAS on these protocols is aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and establishes a framework for economic and social prosperity in our regions,”  Achieng maintained.

    In his remarks, director, External Relations, ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Jerome Boa, while expressing gratitude to IGAD delegation for its cooperation, highlighted  the common objectives and challenges faced by  the two regions called for mutual cooperation among member states  stressing that with unity and cooperation the  region and the continent  of Africa as a whole stands  the chance of catarpulting  itself to greatness.

    He assured participants of willingness of both organisations to strengthen  inter-regional ties, enhanced economic opportunities to ensure the well-being of their populations through cooperation initiatives.

    The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is a regional economic community comprising the countries of the Horn of Africa, including Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda. Its mission is to develop and accelerate regional integration and cooperation between Member States.

    ECOWAS holds sensitization workshop for manufacturers, SMEs on Trade Liberalization policy in South East

    In its bid to boost free trade and foster trade integration across the six geopolitical Zone in Nigeria, the Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS)’s department for Economic Affairs, has organized a one-day sensitization workshop on ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) policies for manufacturers and Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in South East geopolitical zone.

    The event facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with Anambra State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, held at the International Convention Centre Awka, on Friday, have in attendence, representatives from the five south eastern states, comprises of Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi.

    In his address, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Yusuf Tuggar while commending the Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, for ensuring a conducive environment for the workshop, said on ECOWAS, is hopeful that the Workshop will enhance the visibility of the Scheme and encourage the Organized Private Sector, Businessmen and Women in Anambra State and the entire South East Geopolitical Zone to take advantage and register their companies into the scheme in order to enjoy the numerous benefits therein.

    According to the Minister who was represented by the Director of International Organisation in the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Amb. Obinna Onowo, “Our presence here, underscores Federal Government’s collective commitment to harnessing the power of trade as a catalyst for growth and prosperity.

    “By embracing the ETLS, together we will pave the way for Nigerian companies to thrive in the regional market, thereby boosting the influx of foreign exchange and fortifying our economic resilience.

    “The Ministry is honoured by your participation as well as the resource persons that will deliver meaningful lectures on the Scheme. I am convinced that the presence of manufacturers at this event would be of immense benefit to your businesses, which would assist in building a vibrant Nigerian economy and facilitate regional integration.

    The Minister noted that the sensitization workshop was also held in Kano and Lagos States in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

    The Anambra State Governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Ernest Ezeayughi while declaring the event open, assure that his administration will partner with the Scheme to enhance effective productivity in the state and beyond.

    The Anambra Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Dr. Christian Udechukwu, said the Workshop was organized in the state in line with Soludo’s vision of making Anambra a livable and prosperous state in Nigeria.

    In his goodwill message, President of South East, South-South Chambers of Commerce, Chief Humphrey Ngonadi described the event as wonderful, urged the manufacturers from the region to key into the scheme to further developed the zone.

    He listed lack of electricity, good road network and adequate security as major challenges, the region is facing at the moment.

    The theme for the workshop is “Exploring the benefits of ETLS in Nigeria.”

    Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong inaugurated into ECOWAS Parliament

    The swearing in ceremony for delegates of the sixth legislature of ECOWAS held today, the 4th of April, in Abuja.

    Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong was sworn in as one of the delegates representing Nigeria in the 115 member parliament comprising parliamentarians from the 15-member nations of ECOWAS, and will hold this position for the next four years.

    The member countries that make up ECOWAS Parliament are; Benin, Burkina-Faso, Gabon Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone & Togo.
    The ambition of ECOWAS is to promote cooperation and integration, and enhance economic stability in the West African sub region.

    The Parliament, one of three arms of ECOWAS which also includes the Judiciary and Executive, strives to strengthen representative democracy in member nations.

    The swearing in ceremony was attended by President Bola Tinubu, current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, President of ECOWAS Commission H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the Senate, HE Godswill Akpabio, along with other senior officials from member nations.
