LPG cost: We are returning to charcoal, firewood despite hazards – Cross River women

    By Christian Njoku

A cross section of women in Calabar has disclosed that they were returning to the use of firewood and charcoal for cooking despite the hazardous effects to their health.

The women who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in interviews said the cost of Liquified Petroleum Gas, (LPG) popularly known as cooking gas and kerosene has become unbearable for them.

Mrs Joan Akiba, a trader said she started using cooking gas for her cooking some years ago after she was diagnosed of an eye defect caused by smoke from fire wood and charcoal.

According to Akiba, she had been managing since then to cook with gas but presently, she was giving up due to the gradual increase in the price of the product

“As at today one kilogram of gas is sold for over N1,200 in Calabar, this is unbearable.

“I decided to move over to kerosene but it was no better because it is hardly available and when it is, it goes for as high as between N800 to N1,000 per litre.

“Our income has not increased but the cost of basic items like gas is so high, so, I have no other option other than firewood and charcoal despite the effects on my eyes and lungs,” she said.

Mrs Peace Ada, a food vendor said she stopped using firewood when she noticed that apart from the effects on her health everywhere around her business premises was black from smoke.

She said she was encouraged to start using gas and it was good but she may not be able to continue following the increase in the cost.

“If we must survive we have to go back to firewood, gas is too expensive today,” she said.

On her part, a visibly angry Miss Philomena Etuk said the increase in the price was deliberate to take everything away from the masses and entrench suffering.

Etuk said it was surprising that in the face of such hardship in the nation, Nigerian still smile and exchange pleasantries.

According to her, diesel, petrol, kerosene and now cooking gas have all gone out of the reach of the common man yet the leaders are living large and driving big cars.

When NAN visited an LPG dealer, Mr Johnson Odok, in the Atimbo area of Calabar to enquire of the cost of the product, he said they were presently selling the product for N1,150 per  kilogram but that would increase immediately new stock arrived.

On why the increase in the price of LPG, Odok said it was simply a foreign exchange matter, adding that the high cost of dollar was affecting the product.

C’River NEWMAP Vows To Recover Project Tricycle In Edim Otop Community

    By Kelvin Obambon

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), Cross River State, has vowed that it would recover a tricycle donated to facilitate the implementation of its project in Edim Otop community in Calabar Municipality local government area.

This comes as NEWMAP prepares to return to its various project sites in the state after a temporary pause that followed World Bank’s withdrawal of funding of the project that aims to address gully erosion crisis and land degradation in some parts of Nigeria on a multi-dimensional scale.

Speaking to journalists in Calabar on preparations to resume project implementation, Prof. Emmanuel Eyo, the state Project Coordinator, NEWMAP, said there had been an issue in Edim Otop where tricycle purposed for facilitation of projects was taken away by a youth in the community.

“Like you have been informed, the chairman of the community committee to oversee those sites, especially the extent of the work done at those sites, informed our team that at the end of that job they were given tricycle and waste dump. Those items were given mainly to enable the indigenes and the residents of that area to carry waste and refuse to the central dumping place, but to our greatest surprise, we noticed that one Endurance, who is working with Aqua Prime Water had to carry the tricycle and since then he had not returned it. But reliably we have been notified that the matter has been reported to the police. So the project will ensure that we follow up to ensure that that tricycle is returned to the site. It is a project property. It’s not a personal property,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Sir Don Ettah, the environmental safeguard officer of NEWMAP said they would return to sites as the dry season sets in, disclosing that NEWMAP will now be funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB).

“Like I said, it was because World Bank was pulling out and so as at 30th of June, 2022 they pulled out. We couldn’t continue with those jobs. Now that EIB has come in we are closing out those jobs. That’s why we went for the inspection today, on the spot assessment with the contractor and the consultant to see what has been done and what needs to be done. What we expect now from the contractor is for them to give us their work programme within a short time frame. The NEWMAP work is basically dry season work because it’s an erosion work. We already into the dry season so we want them to close out those jobs so we can start new sites,” he said.

Cancer Care: NAMP tasks President Tinubu, legislators on Medical Physics Bill

    By Christian Njoku

The Nigerian Association of Medical Physicists (NAMP) has called on President Bola Tinubu and legislators in the upper and lower Chambers to support the passage of the Medical Physics Regulatory Council (Establishment) Bill, 2022.

This was disclosed by Prof. Fatai Balogun, President of NAMP on Tuesday in Calabar during the association’s 2023 Annual Scientific Conference and Workshop.

The theme of the five day conference which runs from Monday, Nov. 6 to Friday, Nov. 10 is “Medical Physics: creating innovation for safe radiation medicine practice.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Medical Physicists are healthcare professionals with specialised training in the medical applications of physics to solve health challenges.

Balogun said the bill was set to produce a college of medical physicists and a regulatory body to check the activities of academic and clinical, medical physicists.

According to him, if the bill is passed, it will enable the nation train those who want to go directly to clinical studies while encouraging people to take the field of Medical Physics as a viable option.

“Medical Physicists are so important in healthcare provision, in fact, without them you cannot set up an oncology centre because without medical physicists there would be no oncologists.

“Currently, our members are just over 100 with very few of them certified because Nigeria does not have a regulatory body necessary for certification,” he said.

Similarly, Ms Olusola Osunsami, Chairperson of NAMP Clinical Training and Certification Board said in order for Medical Physicists to be recognised as a healthcare profession, they needed legislative backing.

She emphasized that Medical Physicists play vital roles in the way patients are treated because they ensure science and technology are used for effective and safe medical practice.

On her part, Dr Nwamaka Lasebikan, President Association of Radiation and Clinical Oncologists (ARCON) commended NAMP for its 2023 conference.

Represented by Dr. Ololade Kehinde, Secretary General of ARCON, she called for investments by government, individuals and financial institutions while appealing for a reduction of bottlenecks that hinder the establishment of cancer centres.

According to her, while such move will improve healthcare provision in the nation and curb brain drain, it will also reduce capital flight which is witnessed whenever Nigerians travel abroad for their healthcare needs.

Dr. Samuel Otene, Chairman Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), National Cancer Committee, said the relationship between Clinical Oncologists and Medical Physicists was so strong as they could not do without each other.

Otene said while an oncologist could say give the patient this dose of radiation, they needed a Medical Physicist to give them every idea of how safe the amount of radiation was to the body of the patient.

He said while cancer care was a multi-disciplinary endeavor, its challenge still remained its high cost of treatment all over the world.

“If we can find a way to incorporate cancer care into the health insurance scheme for people to access care in our hospitals, it will go a long way in reducing the rate of cancer mortality in Nigeria

“We need to sensitize and support Nigerians who are cancer patients to reduce the mortality in this part of the world.”

NAN also reports that the Medical Physics Regulatory Council (Establishment) Bill, 2022 was formerly Medical Physics College and Medical Physics Regulatory Council of Nigeria, Bill 2017.

C’River: TAF Africa, Disability Rights Fund sensitize stakeholders on laws against discrimination of persons with disability

    By Kelvin Obambon

TAF Africa, formerly The Albino Foundation, in collaboration with the Disability Rights Fund, has organized a one-day stakeholder sensitization on the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act (2018) and the Cross River State Disability Rights Law (2021).

The event which took place at the Monty Suite in Calabar Monday, also featured a technical session for the development of a framework for disability inclusive public sector governance in the state.

Declaring the event open, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands, Dr (Mrs) Pauline Obutte, expressed delight to be part of the conversation that would change the narrative on issues around disability rights in the state.

According to her, “A meeting like this is coming at the right time because we have a new government with the people first mantra. That means that everybody in the society is important in governance. There is no room for discrimination. Everyone counts and should be counted. I am delighted to be in our midst, and I am more delighted to learn of this organization and to see that we have stakeholders who are interested in addressing the problem of discrimination against this people with disabilities.”

A representative from the Ministry of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr Stephen Okimba, in his remarks, said there is need for Cross River to chart a way forward in disability rights and inclusiveness in governance, especially that the Governor Bassey Otu-led administration is people centric.

Okimba, a director of rehabilitation in the ministry, said by participating in the stakeholder sensitization meeting to develop a framework for the inclusion of persons with disability in governance, the ministry was doing a very serious work for the state, adding that it is the hope of the current administration to carry everyone along.

On his part, Mr Jake Epelle, the Chief Executive Officer and founder of TAF Africa, said the choice of Cross River for the implementation of the project was based on the fact that the state is receptive to initiatives that promote the rights and welfare of persons with disability as exemplified in the enactment of the Cross River State Disability Rights Law (2021).

Speaking further, Epelle said “When it comes to implementation government can produce a framework for the implementation of a particular law. It is a critical stakeholder that implements that’s why we are working directly with critical stakeholders, robbing minds with them and exposing them to best practices when it comes to implementation.”

He, however, stated that the Disability Rights Law ought to culminate in the establishment of the Cross River State Disability Commission, hence “We are interested in ensuring that the Disability Commission which is the government’s arm that will implement the disability law is established.”

“We want it to come to fruition and we are prepared to give every support, from the legislature to the executive, to the judiciary and of course to the civil society to ensure that this Commission is established and we expose them to the best practice and also go a little bit further by providing the necessary tool that they will need to implement the law. The general public also have a responsibility to be drivers of the implementers of this law,” he stressed.

Earlier, Mr Uche Enyioha, Corporate Services and Communication Manager, TAF Africa, said the event was put together to bring government agencies, ministries and stakeholders in Cross River State to sensitize them on the existing disability rights law of Cross River State, as well as the discrimination against persons with disability prohibition act 2018.

Enyioha who coordinates the disability rights funded intervention to enhance the participation of persons with disability in elections and governance in Cross River, said the idea behind the stakeholder sensitization was to bring participants up to speed with the provisions of the act and to also let them know what the expectations of the public are.

According to him, “We also wanted to develop a framework of inclusive public sector governance which will be what we called a standard operating manual for disability inclusive governance in Cross River State. With what we were able to achieve today we are sure that the message can be pass down. There definitely will be several more engagements of this kind. We will be interacting with the different stakeholders on a bilateral level. We have initiated the process and it will definitely continue.

“What we have done is to further build on our draft. After now we intend to further work on the inputs and articulate the submissions that have been made and of course present that to the state government, and hopefully we will find approval to properly adopt it as a working document for all MDAs.”

The facilitator at the workshop, Dr Owoade Adeleke, who dissected the various provisions of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act (2018) and the Cross River State Disability Rights Law (2021), however regretted that the state has not done enough in the implementation of both laws.

The University of Calabar don opined that Cross River ought to have emulated the federal government which, after enacting the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act (2018), followed it up with the setting up of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCWD) in 2020.

He said the implementation of Cross River State Disability Rights Law (2021) would have gained momentum if that a Commission was put in place to drive and enforce the provisions of the law.

Adeleke therefore urged civil society organizations to be relentless in their advocacy for the advancement of disability rights and the establishment of Cross River State Disability Commission.

Members of various clusters of organizations of persons with disabilities were also in attendance at the workshop.
