Sermatech Faces Backlash Following Abuja Meeting Over Project Complaints

In the aftermath of a tripartite meeting held in Abuja on December 20, 2023, involving the Honourable Minister of Works, His Excellency Senator Dave Nweze Umahi, officials of the Federal Ministry of Works, representatives from the Cross River Consultative Forum, and a delegation from Sermatech Nigeria Ltd, tensions have escalated.

The meeting aimed to address complaints lodged against Sermatech Nigeria Ltd concerning alleged subpar work on the contracts for the construction of Odukpani-Itu-Ikot and the rehabilitation of Calabar-Ikom-Ugep highways.

Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla, who was present at the meeting, expressed his astonishment and concern over what he termed “the shamelessness of Sermatech” in response to what he perceived as an orchestrated campaign against the leadership of the Cross River South Consultative Forum. This campaign, according to him, involved propaganda, blackmail, calumny, and lies.

Obono-Obla accused Sermatech of attempting to divert attention from its alleged incompetence and failures in executing contracts in Cross River State. He emphasized that the people of Cross River are well aware of Sermatech’s track record and won’t be swayed by what he described as “paid media blitzkrieg” against courageous leaders who exposed the company’s shortcomings.

He urged Sermatech to acknowledge its failures and address them instead of engaging in tactics that he termed “shameless.” Obono-Obla noted that the patience and civility of the people of Cross River should not be taken for granted.

This development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing dispute between Sermatech and the Cross River South Consultative Forum, raising questions about the company’s public relations strategy and its ability to navigate the growing criticism of its performance.

  • Addressing the Root Causes of Suicide: A Call to Action for Mental Health

Addressing the Root Causes of Suicide: A Call to Action for Mental Health

    By Cynthia Maduekwe

In light of the concerning rise in suicide rates globally, we are compelled to address the pressing issues surrounding mental health, with a focus on depression, impression, and expression as key factors influencing this alarming trend.

Depression, often underestimated, is a silent assailant that affects millions worldwide. Our society must prioritize mental health awareness and destigmatize seeking help. Through education and open conversations, we aim to empower individuals to recognize the signs of depression, fostering an environment that encourages seeking assistance without judgment.

Impression, the way individuals perceive themselves and their role in society, plays a pivotal role in mental health. Society’s unrealistic standards and expectations can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and isolation. We advocate for a cultural shift towards embracing diversity and promoting self-acceptance, thereby reducing the detrimental impact of societal pressures.

Expression, the ability to communicate one’s thoughts and emotions, is vital for mental well-being. Creating safe spaces for open dialogue about mental health is crucial. We urge communities, schools, and workplaces to prioritize mental health programs, ensuring that individuals feel supported and understood.

The Way Forward: Solutions to Prevent and Cure

    1. Accessible Mental Health Services: Governments and organizations must invest in accessible and affordable mental health services, ensuring that anyone in need can easily access professional help.

    2. Community Support Networks: Establishing community support networks that provide a sense of belonging and understanding can be instrumental in preventing individuals from feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

    3. Education and Awareness Campaigns: Launching comprehensive campaigns to educate the public about mental health, focusing on early identification of symptoms, available resources, and the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues.

    4. Workplace Wellness Programs: Encouraging companies to implement mental health wellness programs that promote a healthy work-life balance, reduce stress, and offer resources for employees facing mental health challenges.

    5. Media Responsibility: Media outlets should play a responsible role in portraying mental health issues accurately and without sensationalism. Promoting positive narratives can contribute to a healthier societal mindset.

As we collectively strive to address the root causes of suicide, let us foster a compassionate and understanding society where mental health is prioritized, stigma is eradicated, and individuals feel empowered to seek help without hesitation.

WASH: Rotary Club donates membrane-ultra-filters in 10 Niger-Delta hospitals

    By Christian Njoku

Rotary Club in collaboration with some of its foreign partners like Environ Focus has donated and installed membrane ultra filters in 10 hospitals in the Niger Delta region to provide portable drinking water.

This was confirmed by Mr Dennis Isueken, President of Rotary Club of Calabar -Tinapa, during the inauguration of one of the projects on Thursday in Asi Ukpo Hospital and Cancer Centre, Calabar.

A membrane ultra filter is an equipment  that helps in ensuring that there is a barrier that separates harmful bacteria, viruses and other contaminants from clean water.

It ensures that suspended particles that are too large to pass through the membrane stick to the outer membrane surface allowing only fresh water and dissolved minerals pass through.

Isueken said the project became necessary as part of the club’s effort to eradicate  issues around water sanitation and hygiene in the nation.

“By providing this water filter, it is expected that around here we are trying to eradicate water borne diseases.

“For Cross River, we had to carryout our feasibility study to confirm the sustainability mechanism of various hospitals and we discovered that Asi Ukpo Hospital and Cancer Centre qualified for the facility to be installed in its premises.

“The provision and installation of each of this filters cost over N1 million and Rotary is providing 10 to hospitals in 10 Niger Delta states of Nigeria,” he said.

He noted that they ensured that wherever the equipment was installed, the health facility would be able to maintain it effectively to ensure continuous provision of portable drinking water for the people.

He used the opportunity to appeal to government at all levels to ensure that equipments like these were installed in communities after the installation of water facilities to ensure reduction of water borne diseases.

Responding Mr Yegwa Ukpo, Executive Director of Asi Ukpo Hospital and Comprehensive Cancer Centre  thanked Rotary Club for selecting his facility.

Ukpo said they had always thought of ways to move from just being a medical facility where people came to access care to impacting the general community.

“This project will help us move further in that direction because access to free portable water is one of the most critical issue in the world today because of climate change.

“Today we will be touching more lives with clean and portable drinking water with support from Rotary Club,” he maintained.

Cross River Indigenous Ministers’ Forum Organizes State Thanksgiving

    By Kelvin Obambon

Cross River Indigenous Ministers’ Forum has held an interdenominational thanksgiving service for the state.

The event took place at the main bowl of the Cultural Center, Calabar on Saturday.

Chairman of the forum, Evang. Stephen Atunkanre, in his opening remarks, said that the thanksgiving was to appreciate God for raising a governor that would rescue the state.

According to him, the emergence of Prince Bassey Otu as governor of Cross River marked years of prayers and supplications by men of God who have sought a turn around in the fortunes of a state that was hitherto at the edge of a precipice.

“You can see that if you go through the streets of Calabar work is going on. They are patching all the potholes in the streets. There is peace in Calabar. He (Governor Otu) has fought insecurity to a point. We know that we are going to conquer. I can tell you that people are sleeping well in Calabar. Even in Bakassi, Akpabuyo the fire is on. When you also see the policy of the government you will know that it is a policy that is godly.

“The retirees who since 2014 have not received their gratuities, there is announcement that they will be paid before Christmas. Also when you go to primary and secondary schools, so many children who could not afford to pay school fees, there’s free education now in Cross River State, from primary to secondary.

“God is in control. His hands are in the steering of Cross River State. We see that things are turning around and reprogramming for us to have a Cross River State that God destined for us. Are you not aware that there’s gold now in Biase? Are you not aware that there’s gold now in Obanliku? All of these come as a result of prayers because it’s the Holy Spirit who knows where you can find gold and diamond. He’s causing so many things to happen from all ends.

“After six months, it became very necessary to come and gather and tell God “thank you”. We the pastors from Cross River State decided to thank God for what he has done and what he’s going to do. We have seen His mighty hand upon Cross River State. We have seen the finger of God. There’s going to be heavy rain after passing through so much drought and hunger for a long time. The season of sweetness has come,” he said.

Atunkanre, however, pledged that the forum would continue to pray for the success of the current administration, while also urging all Cross Riverians to do same.

Meanwhile, delivering the sermon of the day themed, “O God thank you”, His Lordship, Most Rev (Prof.) Christopher Koko-Ete Naseri, the auxiliary bishop of Catholic Diocese of Calabar, said a sincere thanksgiving pave way for further growth and progress in humility.

Naseri who took his reading from the book of Psalm 107 vs 8-9, said God has given the state a good governor who will bear fruit for Cross Riverians to enjoy.

Represented by Fr. Peter Ekpenyong, the Catholic bishop said that man was created by God to rejoice and give acceptable thanks, adding that thanking God should be a way of life.

Speaking further, he said thanksgiving could be done in many ways such as generosity, fulfilment of vows, among others. The benefits of thanksgiving therefore, according to the clergyman, are strength and protection, reception of unshakeable kingdom, boldness and fearlessness.

In attendance at the thanksgiving service were the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Community Development, Bishop (Dr) Margaret Ene-Ita; the Head of Department of Music, University of Calabar, Prof. Caroline Etim; Executive members of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), among others.

There were also song renditions by the Apostolic Church Choir, The Presbyterian Church Choir (Old Town Parish) and the Music Department of the University of Calabar.

Baring any last minute changes, Dr. Inyali Peter is set to emerge as the new national President of the University of Cross River State (Unicross) Alumni Association.

Inyali, a graduate of Mass Communication from the University and former Students’ leader was the only Presidential candidate screened and cleared in a list released and jointly signed by the Electoral Committee Chairman and Secretary, Comrades Victor Agbor and John Utibe, respectively.

Inyali will be ratified during the 5th National Convention of the association holding at the U.J Esuene Stadium, Calabar, tomorrow, December 12.

When contacted to react to his eminent victory, Inyali said that although he has been announced as the sole candidate for the position, his victory is not yet official as executives of the association can only emerge in the floor of the national convention.

He said: “we have worked so hard to get to the level we are now. For me, even though I can confirm that I have seen the official release where I was the only candidate screened and cleared for the position of national President, I can still not been recognised as President because only a validly constituted convention can determine that.

“Hopefully, we will react formally tomorrow if and when the convention ratifies me. Remember that the convention can still refuse to ratify me. So, we are calm and awaiting for the outcome of the convention tomorrow.”
