    NCF, Wilder Institute donate equipment worth N8m to preserve Cross River’s endangered gorillas

    The Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF) in collaboration with the Wilder Institute has donated equipment worth N8 million for the conservation of Cross River’s endangered gorillas.

    According to the foundation, it is part of it’s efforts in contributing to the protection of threatened species in the nation such as the Cross River gorillas found in wildlife sanctuaries in the state.

    In a release signed by the Head of Communication Mr Oladapo Soneye on Friday, he said the donation was to boost ongoing research project on the conservation of the gorillas in partnership with other organisations.

    Soneye said the donation was made to some of the partners of NCF which included, Cross River National Park, Cross River Forestry Commission and the University of Calabar, (UniCal).

    “The equipment which will aid researches include digital cameras, desktop computers, laptops, projector and projector screen, video conferencing gadget, 65-inch flat screen Hi-sense TV, professional Video Conference Cameras.

    “Others are MC3000 USB HD PTZ auto rotate tracking voice camera, built-in 4 digital microphone array and 10 meters voice pickup,  2.2million pixels, 1/2.8 HD color CMOS sensor, 1920*1080HD display, walkie-talkie, still cameras for GPS handsets and drones.

    “The television and computer equipment will support video conferencing for  meetings at the University of Calabar while the, camera traps, drones and other equipment are for the student research projects,” he said.

    Speaking further, he noted that the Cross River Gorilla Initiative commenced in 2022 and has awarded scholarship to two masters and a doctorate student all in the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management in UniCal.

    He said the students have resumed their three months internship programme with NCF to gain practical experience in the use of field equipment, conduct field surveys and familiarize themselves with project communities.

    According to him, the students will also understand the role of gender in forest resource management with reference to gorilla conservation.

    Similarly, Mr Emmanuel Owan, Head, Calabar Office of NCF said to achieve the project goals, a two day training on gender and conservation was held recently in the University of Calabar.

    Owan stated that the essence was to give participants a robust understanding Of the importance of gender in the conservation of Cross River gorillas and it’s applicability in field research.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Cross River gorilla is a critically endangered subspecies of the western gorilla and live in small areas of highland forest that span the border of Nigeria and Cameroon.

    It is estimated that there are at most 300 Cross River gorillas left in the wild as a result of threats associated with habitat loss and hunting.

    Nigeria’s Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has been conferred with an outstanding public service award by the Cross River State Government.

    At the presentation ceremony held at Diamond Hall, Transcorp Hotels, Calabar, the State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu who presented the Award to the Minister described her as ‘the  jewel of the Crown’ and an outstanding daughter of Cross River  state serving Nigeria at the National Level diligently.”

    The Governor said Dr. Edu has distinguished herself in every assignment given to her, saying her contributions to the social economic, and political development of  Cross River State and Nigeria can not be overemphasized.

    He described the Cross River State Recognition of Excellence awards as one of its kind to encourage those coming behind to emulate good leaders by contributing their quota to the state and nation-building.

    Otu said the grand reception was a new dawn in the history of Cross River State.

    “It’s the dawn of a new era in the history of Cross River State where eminent sons and daughters who are serving at the federal level in their different capacities are recognized.

    “They have been part of the state development agenda with distinguished human resources that has put the state growth trajectory at the national level.

    “The essence of the award is to add value and encourage others to render selfless service to Cross River State and Nigeria.

    “Dr Betta is our ‘Jewel of the Crown’ from Cross River State. She is a Cross River state export to the world. she has been making the state proud, and we are proud of what she’s doing at the center and for being an illustrious daughter of Cross River State and for your commitment to nation-building, you are recognized,” Otu added.

    Governor further said that “the unity of Cross River State is sacrosanct and place uppermost in this government which is a people-first Government because everybody is a stakeholder in the affairs of the state irrespective of religion, tribes, and ethnic differences. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for appointing great Cross Riverians into strategic places in Government at the National, reassuring him that he would see the difference as Cross Riverians are hard workers.

    Responding, the Minister described the award as “Very Close to My Heart and a challenge to do more in reducing poverty and humanitarian crises in Nigeria, in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”

    “I dedicate this award to all Nigerians who are facing humanitarian challenges and assure them that solution is here under President Tinubu’s. The president’s commitment to lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty is unprecedented.

    “I want to most respectfully appreciate Mr. President for giving me this opportunity to serve at the national level, same appreciation goes to my dear Governor, His Excellency Senator Bassey Edet Otu for organizing this award and for all the support,” Dr. Edu further said.

    Others who received the distinguished service awards include Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Jane Inyang, Minister for Sports, Senator John Owan Enoh, Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major Gen. Emmauel  Udiandeye, and six serving Assistant Inspector-General of Police who are indigenes of Cross River state.

    Table Tennis: I had no coach, no accommodation, says renewed hope tourney gold medalist

    Hope Udoaka, a gold medalist at the Renewed Hope Table Tennis Invitational Challenge held at the Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium has disclosed that she had no coach or accommodation during the tourney.

    The athlete who represents Cross River made the revelation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Calabar.

    NAN reports that Udoaka who is currently Nigeria’s number one junior table tennis champion defeated Shukurat Aiyelabegan from Kwara by three sets to one in the final.

    The 200 Level student of Library and Information Science who had earlier won two gold medals at the West Africa University Games and a gold medal in the Michael and Felicia Alabi Table Tennis Championship, defeated Rashidat Ogundele from Delta in the quarter final.

    She also defeated Bose Odunsanya of Lagos in the semi finals, both players are former and present national team players respectively and are players in the senior category.

    Udoaka said though the competition was tough, determination and will saw her through.

    “The matches were tough, I didn’t have a coach by my side, I was playing and coaching myself and I was able to defeat a current and a former national team player.

    “I dreamt about participating in the Renewed Hope tourney even though I had no support from my state, I arrived Lagos two days before the competition to acclimatise but I had no accommodation, so I was sleeping with other states.

    “I had to invest all the allowance I got from the West Africa University Games where I represented my school in the Renewed Hope competition yet it was not enough because I had to appeal for where to sleep and feed,” she said.

    According to her she was among the first 20 table tennis players slated for the event but without accommodation and proper feeding it was difficult because a hungry man does not win competitions.

    She said it was sad that everyone sees table tennis as an individual sport and the sponsorship and support is low but when the glory comes everybody wants to share in what they did not support.

    She said upcoming players needed support to get good rackets, balls, tables for training and sponsorship to go for competitions, adding that it was the only way they could grow.

    She commended some of the foreign based stars like Offiong Edem, Haruna Qadiri who came home and encouraged upcoming players with facilities and competitions, while appealing to state governments to follow suit.

    The Renewed Hope Table Tennis Championship which held at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall on Saturday, Dec. 23 was organised by the National Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC).

    Organize your members for rerun election, INEC urges political parties in C’River

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on political parties to organize their members in the forthcoming rerun election in Cross River communities.

    This was disclosed by Prof. Gabriel Yomere, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Cross River during the 2023 Carnival Calabar street party on Thursday in Calabar.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC came out with its own decorated but non competing float with inscriptions such a as “keep and protect your voter’s card” and “prepare for the forthcoming rerun election.”

    Yomere said if the political parties had organized their members, avoiding violence, ballot box snatching among other irregularities, there would have been no need for a rerun.

    “We are having a rerun election in Akamkpa/Biase and Obanliku/Yala Federal Constituencies, so, I am pleading with political parties, let orderliness be the watch ward.

    “They should educate their members to refrain from irregularities or cause trouble around voting areas so that voters can have the confidence to come out and carry out their civic responsibilities without fear of intimidation,” he said.

    He maintained that the carnival was a good avenue for them to sensitizes the people on the activities of INEC noting that electioneering was a continuous process.

    He added that those that could not collect the voter’s cards before the 2023 General Elections should wait for the pronouncement of INEC for when and where they could go and collect their cards.

    Similarly, Mr Obi Effanga, INEC REC in Bayelsa who visited to partake in the carnival activities said he came to support the commission in Cross River for its Sensitisation exercise.

    He asserted that Carnival Calabar is the biggest street party in Africa and a veritable platform to sensitize people on the activities of INEC in and out of election seasons.

    He added that they were also preparing for the rerun election that would take place in Bayelsa state.

    Cross River Assembly Passes 2024 Appropriation Bill Into Law

    The Cross River State House of Assembly has passed the 2024 Appropriation Bill of N296, 985,631,978.01 into law.

    The State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu had on October 26, 2024 presented the budget  estimates of 250,564,235,077.05 christened, “The People’s First Budget” to the Assembly for consideration and passage.

    The passage of the bill followed,  amongst other things, the presentation of the report of the  Committee on Finance and Appropriation by its Chairman, Hon Cyril Omini (Yakurr 1).

    Omini commended Governor Otu for his adherence to the provision of the State Public Finance Management Law which provides that the Governor shall not later than the last working day in  the month of October of each year, cause to be prepared and laid before the Assembly, the annual estimates of revenue and expenditure of the State for the new financial year.

    Earlier, the Committee had an interface with various Ministries, Departments and Agencies for the defence of their  various budget estimates before presenting it’s report to the House.

    Announcing the passage, the Speaker, Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem expressed appreciation to the  members of the Finance and Appropriation Committee  as well as other Lawmakers for their commitment and dedication towards the expeditious passage of the budget.

    Sectoral Allocation of the 2024 budget is as follows; Economic, 104,986,870,898.59, General Administration,95,815,641,732.59, Social, 86,973,489,533.02 while  Justice and Regional sectors were allocated 7,947,139,687.33 and 1,262,390,126.53 respectively.

  • Police arrest laundry man for alleged kidnapping in Calabar

    The Police Command in Cross River have arrested the third member of a kidnapping gang that have been terrorizing the state capital, Calabar.

    It would be recalled that the Command, through its Anti Cultism and Kidnapping Squad (ACKS) led by SP Chukwuma Ogini, had on Tuesday arrested two members of the four-man gang.

    The third member identified as Gabriel James who operates a laundry service at Edibe Edibe street in Calabar South Local Government Area, was apprehended on Tuesday night.

    The gang were said to be responsible for the recent abduction of the wife of a popular vehicle dealer in Calabar simply identified as Mrs Aliu.

    The command spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect has made confessional statement on his role in the abduction of Mrs Aliu.

    Ugbo said that the suspect tried to escape when the ACKS men swooped in  on him.

    “He has confessed that he participated in several abductions, including Mrs Aliu.

    “He also confessed to have received his share from the ransom paid by Mrs Aliu’s husband via an account that was provided by the leader of their gang.

    “He will be charged to court alongside two others who were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday,” Irene  stated.

    Chief Whip of the Cross River State House of Assembly and Member Representing Boki II State Constituency, Rt Hon Hilary Bisong JP, has said that creativity and capability has no restriction, irrespective of physical disabilities.

    The Boki-born philanthropist stated this during a chit-chat and distribution of food items to Persons Living With Disabilities in his Constituency, marking the Christmas celebration.

    Describing disability as “No fault of the individual”, says no man has limitations to greatness. The MP also noted that humans have different creative abilities, which if put to positive use, can become successful, without recourse to physical deformities.

    “Disability is a thing of the mind. Every human being has the capability to be creative, and this goes beyond physical appearances. There is no limitation to success, neither the wheel chair nor visual impairment can stop a determined mind”.

    He expressed confidence in the exploits of persons living with disabilities who according to him, have demonstrated self-reliance and have carved a niche for themselves by their sheer creative ability.

    He further pledged continued support to them, while also calling on well-meaning individuals to show them support and not discrimination.

    He presented them with items such as; Bags of Rice, Spaghetti, Bags of Beans Bathing soaps, Detergent, gallons of Vegetable Oil and Cash support. He also promised to a monthly stipend for them.
