The governor made this known at a dinner organized in honour of outgoing service commanders in the state.

“Today’s occasion is to honour gentlemen that have served this state meritoriously. It is a big pride to wear the colours of our military. Today, the gentlemen we are honoring, have  continuously put lives in great danger over the years to ensure that Cross Riverians and residents have a good sleep.

“I want to openly apologize to them and say that I am sorry for the disturbance by way of late night calls, meetings and so on, even at odd hours, whenever there was an incident of insecurity anywhere in the state. I did that just to ensure that our people could sleep with their two eyes closed.

“I must say that I am very proud of these officers. Because, whether the problem was in Obanliku or Bakassi, anytime I called them, they were always there to do their best to ensure that the  security situation  was brought under control. I am so proud of the level of bond and cordiality that exists among  the service Commanders”.

Governor Otu used the occasion to wish the officers well, while assuring them of his administration’s willingness to continue to support their various state commands.

Responding on behalf of their colleagues, outgoing commander of the Nigerian Army, 13 Brigade, Major General E I Okoro expressed appreciation to the governor for the support and wonderful working relationship he enjoyed during his stay in the State.

“This honour is a testimony of not just the good relationship we have enjoyed but also of the premium that the governor places on the security of all Cross Riverians.

“For us in the military and other security agencies, our job is nomadic in nature and the time has come for us to obey  that call. But I must say that during the course of our service here, we have not shy away from confronting whatever security situation that confronted us.

“We have enjoyed tremendous support from the governor and Cross Riverians and we can only call on those who are still around to please sustain the tempo”.

The outgoing service commanders include, Commander 305 Special Mobility Group (SMG), Nigerian Airforce Air Commodore OA Okpara who has been posted to Bauchi State; Commander, 13 Brigade of the Nigerian  Army, Calabar, Brigadier General E I Okoro who recently was promoted to the rank of a Major General and State Director, Department of State Services, Mr. John Sokoya will be retiring from service.

Nigerians must not condescend to media trial in Humanitarian Minister’s case – Media Expert

    By Christian Njoku

Mr Fidelis Duker, a Media Expert and Founder of the FAD Media Group has called on Nigerians not to condescend to media trial on the corruption allegations against Dr. Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Duker made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while reacting to the widespread condemnation of the Minister on social media, even before any investigation by the relevant government agencies.

It would be recalled that earlier, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation was accused of transferring N585 million to a private account which sparked widespread condemnation on social media.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FAD media group said the issue of media trial which starts from the social media space was becoming worrisome as it had the capacity to make or mar anyone without proper justification.

He said for now what was made against the minister is an accusation but unfortunately, many Nigerians have already drawn conclusions on the matter even without any form of investigation.

“While I am not exonerating her, I think we should allow the investigation to go through before we are able to say if she is guilty or not.

“Thank God the president has set up a panel headed by the Minister of Finance, Mr Wale Edun and they have asked her to report before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) which she did without excuses.

“We have had cases in the past where people were accused of burying monies in sucker-ways and cemeteries, at the end, they were tried, discharged and acquitted but their images were already destroyed on the social media,” he said.

Duker who is also the Founder of the Abuja Film Festival said he was aware that the allegations were grievous in this time when the economy of the nation was at its lowest ebb, adding “we must allow relevant government agencies do their job of investigating”.

Speaking further, he said he also does not believe that the accusations were a witch-hunt because of the minister’s tribe, ethnic group or religion, adding that bringing that up was childish and baseless.

He added that public office holders should be more careful and detailed by knowing the kinds of approvals they give, what they sign and concessions they make because they are a property of the people.

APC group demands chairmanship of Calabar Municipal Council

    By Our Reporter

An assemblage known as the All Progressive Congress, (APC) Legacy Group, Calabar Municipality Chapter has demanded that it be given the right to produce the next chairman of Calabar Municipal Council.

The group made the demand on Thursday in Calabar when it paid a courtesy visit to Chief Felix Idem, leader of the party in Calabar Municipal Council to congratulate him on his new position in the party.

It would be recalled that Idem was affirmed leader of the party at the council level during a meeting by members of the party on Sunday Jan. 7, 2024.

Speaking on behalf of the group Comrade Iso Edim said the APC Legacy Group was a assemblage of members of the original parties that formed the APC.

Edim noted that these were the members that had been loyal to the party through thick and thin over the years until some new members defected to the party in the state in 2021 and highjacked the party structure.

He said while they supported them so as not to cause division in the party in the state, all they ask for is the opportunity to produce the next chairman of Calabar Municipality.

According to him, “the next chairman of Calabar Municipality should come from constituency 1 that is to say from Ward 1 to Ward 5 of Calabar Municipality.

“Also, the next chairman should be a real Qua son as the House of Assembly Member, Hon. Stanley Nsemo is a non-Qua, so as to strike a balance as it has always been,” he said.

He noted that while that was all they were asking for as a group, never again would they allow leaders who were square pegs in round holes.

Responding Idem thanked them for the visit and for affirming him the leader of the party in the council

He also used the opportunity to call on other members of the party to come join hands with them to grow the party in the council.

He said APC has come to stay and that anybody that thinks he can wrestle power from the party both at the national and state level was making a mistake.

He called on the members of the group to put the council together because they were a people of integrity and truth adding that gone were the days when they believed in thuggery.

He added that Calabar is a peaceful City and if they were united it would give the governor more room to carry out plans and programs that would develop Calabar Municipality as they all want.

  • Why Slavery Museum in Cross River is without power – Tourism Bureau

Why Slavery Museum in Cross River is without power – Tourism Bureau

    By Christian Njoku

Mr Ojoi Ekpenyong, Managing Director, (MD) Cross River Tourism Bureau has explained the reason behind the lack of power in the Slavery Museum situated in the Marina Resort, Calabar.

Ekpenyong disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) on Tuesday in Calabar, while reacting to claims by the Slavery Museum of being charged high electricity bill, beyond its capacity to pay.

NAN had earlier visited the museum and discovered that it was without power even though other businesses in the premises of the Marina Resort had power.

An official of the museum who spoke to NAN on the basis of anonymity claimed that they were charged N100,000 monthly for electricity by the Tourism Bureau which managed the resort, adding that it was too high and they could not afford it.

The MD said for more than two years, the Marina Resort had no power and no one could run a first class resort without power.

He said on assumption of office, he noticed that the greatest challenge of the resort was power, so, he took the initiative and went to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, (PHEDC) and secured a dedicated line.

According to him, the dedicated line supplied electricity for a minimum of 22 hours daily to the resort but it came at a cost as the government of Cross River had to pay about N12 million to get this done.

“After securing this power, the monthly electricity bill of the resort was N2.5 million, so, I called all the vendors at the resort including the Slavery Museum and divided the bill.

“What was allotted to the museum was N200,000 monthly but because it was the museum, I gave them a  50 per cent discount which is N100,000 but they won’t pay.

“They want to run the place, collect between N500 and N1,000 from each of the tourists that visit the museum without paying for electricity bill, even though they have about 15 air conditioners.

“We were able to attract a cinema company that invested about N800 million to the resort because we had to work on the power and security of the place, today the resort is alive again and yet the some people refuse to pay their bill,” he said.

Ekpenyong maintained that the government of Cross River built the museum and handed it over to the National Museum and Monuments, yet we are the once that clean the resort and provide security.

He stated that he is aware that from the head office of the National Museum and Monuments, imprest was given to run the museums, yet they have refused to pay the electricity bill.

The MD added that the museum owed the bill for two months that was for Oct. and Nov. 2023 before they were disconnected in the first week of Dec. 2023, noting that they were the only ones disconnected from power in the resort.

On the development of the resort, the MD said the bureau was still engaging with the private sector to come and invest in different sectors of the resort.

  • Contributory Pension Scheme: A Cash Cow For Current, Past IGPs – Police Retirees

Contributory Pension Scheme: A Cash Cow For Current, Past IGPs – Police Retirees

The Nigeria Police Retirees (NPR) under Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have described the scheme as an evil slave merchandise with the Inspector General of Police (IGPs-retired and serving) as beneficiaries.

In a rejoinder, “Re: IGP Sensitive to Improved Welfare Pension Scheme: Initiate Moves to Proffer Lasting Solution”, the Police retirees said, the press release by the Force PRO as authorized by the IGP Dr. Egbetokun Kayode was “very economical with the truth as paragraph two of the press release emphasized the commitment of the IGP to resolve pending issues as regards post-service police welfare. This is a detour to his repugnant position after his initial wave of political statements and sentiments during his tour of some police formations”.

This rejoinder was contained in a statement dated January 9 by the Nigeria Police Retirees (NPR) under Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), signed by its National Coordinator/Chairman, Cross River State Chapter, SP. Chris Effiong (Rtd), Secretary General, DSP (Dr). Peter Silas (Rtd) and Legal Adviser, DSP (Elder) Ofem Mbang (Rtd).

The police retirees said that they “are aware that he (IGP) is hell bent to coerce retirees under the CPS into a scheme that benefits his dream retirement like the previous IGPs who traded the destinies of both serving and retired officers under their watch. This new commitment is a decoy to persuade our agitated minds and patronize our conscience to lure us into the slave trade merchandising he wishes for us.

“We want to remind the IGP (in case he has forgotten) that the police generals have paved a safe haven for themselves after they exited the evil and obnoxious pension scheme organized for the dredge of the society through the back door”.

They argued, “if this scheme is good enough, why did the Police generals hurriedly exempt themselves from the scheme and want to use us as article of trade to funnel income into the purse of NPF pension and pencom?

“The Army generals never abandoned their subordinates when the military exited the CPS. It is a shame that the Police generals are happy that a senior Police Officer would collect 1.5m after 35 years of meritorious service to this nation as lump sum (gratuity) and N14,000.00 as monthly pension under our present economy.

“Whereas a junior staff of Pension Commission takes home a whooping 1.5m as monthly salary. The chicks that lay the golden eggs are dying of hunger and starvation. The frustration on retired Police officers has caused high death tolls among Police Retirees.

“For instance, on 23/12/2023 only, two retirees – late Rtd ASP Mohammed Na’Állah Agunbiade and late Rtd ASP Akanbi Ajibola both of Kwara State died. One can imagine if the statistics is across the nation. The death toll has been that way because of poor living condition after retirement”.

The Police retirees said the press release release in paragraph three stated that “in the efforts of the IGP to finding a lasting solution to the pending issues of retirement that the IGP invited both serving and retired police officers to Force Headquarters Abuja for a meeting. We emphatically refute that claim as untrue and unfounded.

“The acclaimed meeting as reported in the news was between the IGP, National Union of Pensioners (NUP) and Police Veterans Forum (PVF) who are not part of the CPS group of retirees. The NUP distanced itself from our several efforts to secure exit from the evil scheme bankrolled by Pencom. They purposely refused to present any papers in any of our appearances both in the Red and Green chambers. So, at what point did they become our representatives?”

Since the formation of the PVF was announced, the retirees said “it’s membership selection has been majority of Defined Benefit Scheme Retirees than Contributory Pension Scheme Retirees. Was any member of the Veteran Foundation at the Red or Green Chambers of the national Assembly to defend Police Exit and Establishment of Police Pension Board Bills? If no, why are those who understand the pains associated with CPS sidelined?

“This is not an oversight but a deliberate act of neglect against Police Retirees under CPS. So, we refute the claim of being at the meeting with a man who is head-bent to further impoverish Police retirees under CPS.

“The IGP pretentiously asked at Kwara State Command ‘where are you exiting to; as if he does not know where other sister security agencies exited to nor where his predecessors exited to and where he will soon exit to”.

The concerted efforts made by ordinary members of the force after the police generals exited themselves to secure the passage of the bill to establish police pension board has been scuttled by the unrelenting commitment of the IGP without minding what went into that humongous achievement.

We want to reiterate unequivocally that the IGP has no statutory responsibilities under the extant law – Police Reform Act 2014 and should be guided. It’s a matter of respect we want to align with the force otherwise there is no part of the Act that served the IGP any purpose.

After all he is not a management staff of Pencom other than he is fixated on using the numerical strength of the retirees under CPS to funnel funds into NPF pension Ltd as a business man; not out of love for retirees under CPS. Therefore, we demand for obvious reasons that he should retract his pretentious actions.

May we quickly add that we are aware that the NASS might summon the IGP to appear before the house before the passage of the Bill. It is not because they lack wisdom or any information about the condition and the suffering of Police retirees under CPS, but a recognition to the Office of the IGP.

We want to caution against the repetition of the negative history where a sitting IGP told the NASS that the Police are comfortable with the Contributory Pension Scheme and truncated the process of exiting the Police from the Scheme then. We are not comfortable with the scheme. We desire nothing less than total exit and so plead that the IGP should let it be.  What is good for the goose is also good for the gander.

The IGP can stand aloof and watch unfolding events than jump into the conflict arena; the dust will settle on him. He has done enough damage to our God-given victory. We served the force and left him there to continue the tradition of respect for senior citizens not disrespecting and disparaging us before the public.

He has every opportunity to better our lots but has deliberately refused to take that advantage in our favour because greedy pursuit.

We wish to seize this opportunity to sound this warning that we are all Nigerians and citizens who spent the best part of our youthful lives to serve this country where we are being treated like outcasts. Dr. Egbetokun Kayode wants to ensure he aids Aisha Dahir-Umar, Director General National Pension Commission (PenCom) to achieve this mischief because of his private interest like his predecessors.
