Minister moves to check “japa” syndrome, enhances sustainable workforce

    By Christian Njoku

Prof. Mohammad Pate, Minister of Health and Social Welfare has moved to check the high rate of migration of healthcare workers out of Nigeria, popularly known as the “japa syndrome.”

This was observed with the commencement of a five day intensive refresher training of over 100 frontline healthcare workers in Cross River.

The five day training which commenced on Monday April 15, 2024 but was officially flagged-off by Dr Henry Ayuk, Cross River’s Commissioner for Health on Tuesday was part of the initiative of the minister, through the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, (NPHCDA).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training which focuses on 120,000 healthcare workers in public institutions across the country would enhance the competencies of the healthcare workers in different areas.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Mr. Julius Idoko, Coordinator of NPHCDA in Cross River said the training was to build the capacities of health workers across the nation.

According to him, to curbing the continuous exodus of healthcare professionals from the nation was one of the major reasons why the initiative was conceived.

“We said, if we continue to engage and improve the capacity of our health workers, there will be no reason for them to ‘japa’ and that is what we are doing.

“NPHCDA will also provide kits and even stipends to the trained health workers following the response it will get after this training; so, we are not just looking at training alone but motivation of the health workers,” he said.

Officially declaring the event open, Ayuk said the training was very important for Cross River because of the state’s peculiar health challenge which was the dearth of staff.

He said the training which would not just focus on one item or disease programme  would strengthen the skill of available health workforce in the state and enhance clinical outcomes.

“Apart from the training, the state government was looking at equipping about 450 PHCs in the next one year through support from the Federal Government, World Bank and Gov. Bassey Otu’s medical programme,” he said.

Similarly, Dr. Vivian Otu, Director General of Cross River’s Primary Healthcare Development Agency, (CRPHCDA) while commending NPHCDA, said the trained workforce in the state, would cascade the training to the new health workers that would be recruited soon in the state.

Other organisations that were present in the 5 day training of healthcare workers in Cross River include the World Health Organisation, (WHO) University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), the United Nations Children’s Fund, President’s Malaria Initiative, (PMI) among others.

Ministers Forum Appeals To Tinubu To Reinstate Betta Edu

    …Says her performance was satisfactory

    By Kelvin Obambon

Cross River State Indigenous Gospel Ministers (CRSIGM) Forum has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to tamper justice with mercy and recall Dr Betta Edu who was suspended from office as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The Forum while making the appeal at a press briefing in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, on Monday, however noted that despite the unfortunate turn of events, Dr Edu within her 6 months reign in the Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation ministry, had put up a satisfactory performance, as evident in the numerous social and economic interventions across the country.

Chairman of the Forum, Evangelist Stephen Atukanre, who addressed journalists alongside the Secretary, Rev. Dr. Edet Okon and other members, said (CRSIGM) has been organizing monthly prayers for Cross River and Nigeria for peace, unity and progress, adding that it has been fervent in its prayers for the success of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration.

“We are here today for just one purpose; to draw the attention of His Excellency, President BOLA Ahmed Tinubu GCFR to the plight of the down trodden Nigerians who had looked upon the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation under the watch of Dr. Betta Edu, a brilliant and selfless young Nigerian who walks with the aspiration of millions of the poor in all ramifications and had given hope to the hopeless through the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” of our dear President Tinubu, in the course of her duty, drawing hatred and envy to herself simply because she’s doing the right thing. Let us not join issues with politicians and their pulldown syndrome as clearly shown by some of us, if it’s not me, may it never work.

“Our position as Cross River State Indigenous Gospel Ministers (CRSIGM) Forum
having watched the ordeal of Dr. Betta Edu and the politics behind her travails is quite unfortunate and make bold to appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to listen to our prayers, thus:

“Silence isn’t golden at all times. Hence, it is our wish that Dr. Betta Edu should be recall to her Ministry to continue her good work to achieving the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

“Should the baby be thrown with the bath water because the water is dirty?

“Should the Renewed Hope Agenda die with the aspiration of millions of poor Nigerians because of mere suspicion and allegations of corruption and still under investigation?

“It is not Dr. Betta Edu that is on trial here but the Administration. Hence, we must wakeup against sentiments and playing to the gallery for a few disgruntled elements to the detriment of our people.

“We have followed the political activism of President Tinubu and know his stand against social injustice as a result of minority tag or gender. Hence, our appeal to recall Dr. Betta Edu back to her place of work to continue her good work.

“The Cross River State Indigenous Gospel Ministers (CRSIGM) Forum pledged
her unalloyed support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, Governor Senator
Prince Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State as we hold both to the highest esteemed; but wouldn’t stop to call them to order as it concerns good governance, accountability, security and safety of Nigerians for prosperity to strive,” the Forum said.

Bekwarra Group Expresses Concerns Over Political Dynamics in Cross River North

…Calls for Caution in Political Relationships

A socio-political organization based in Bekwarra, known as the Bekwarra Concerned Group (BCG), has issued a statement cautioning against the recent political alignment between the State Governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe from Cross River North.

In a statement signed by Eneji Paul Akonjom and released to the press in Calabar, the group expressed initial optimism about the political collaboration between the Governor and Senator Jarigbe. However, they raised concerns about Senator Jarigbe’s alleged inconsistent behavior, likening it to that of a “chameleon.”

The statement tagged “The Jarigbe Factor and the APC, Cross River State: Issues for Consideration,” reads in part: “It was initially heartwarming when we heard of the political romance between you and Sen. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe. In fact, I considered it a harmless, symbiotic relationship. As good as your intentions would be in that relationship, unfortunately,Your Excellency, Sen. Jarigbe is only playing the Chameleon.”

The statement highlighted a recent incident involving Hon. Signor Omang Idiege, a prominent figure from Bekwarra, who visited the Governor along with stakeholders to pledge their loyalty. According to the statement, Senator Jarigbe allegedly undermined the visit by taking the group to Vandekya, Benue State, where he purportedly discussed plans to deviate from his political understanding with the Governor regarding the 2027 elections.

Furthermore, the group accused Senator Jarigbe of planting moles within the Governor’s camp to gather sensitive information for his own political gain. They claimed that Hon. Idiege, one of the stakeholders who visited the Governor, was allegedly bribed with ₦5 million, while others received sums totaling ₦30 million from Senator Jarigbe.

The statement also addressed recent defections of APC members in Bekwarra, attributing them to Senator Jarigbe’s alleged manipulative tactics. However, it stopped short of making direct accusations without substantial evidence.

The group urged the Governor to remain vigilant and suggested that the proposed Caretaker Committee for Bekwarra should be led by individuals with proven grassroots impact and democratic credentials. They emphasized the importance of selecting candidates based on merit rather than political allegiances.

“The solution lies in our party making more grassroots impact in Bekwarra.”

“Jarigbe,” he furthered, “is a grassroots Politician and may I suggest that the proposed Caretaker Committee for Bekwarra should be headed by one with the requisite pedigree and is reputed for effective grassroots mobilisation and impact.”

The statement maintained that by the reason of such appointments “the people of Bekwarra will naturally look away from Jarigbe.”

It further said one who won the last general elections in his polling unit is eminently qualified for the Caretaker Committee Chairmanship, while urging the Governor to do a dispassionate assessment of the results of the said election as a guide for the appointment.

In conclusion, the statement urged the APC to address the concerns raised regarding Senator Jarigbe’s actions tactfully, emphasizing the need for fair and transparent political processes.

Seed Distribution: We have gained more respect in our community, says Bakassi women IDPs

    By Christian Njoku

A Cross section of women who were internally displaced from Bakassi and  camped in Akwa Ikot Eyo Edem Village in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River have disclosed that they have gained more respect in their community.

The women made the assertion on Friday in their community during a distribution of Okra, Cucumber and pumpkin seeds by Care for Social Welfare International, (CASWI).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the empowerment initiatives which started in 2022 was implemented by CASWI with funds from Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund and supported by UN Women.

NAN also reports that the women who were  part of the Bakassi returnees and could not be settled in Ekpri obutong where others are due to shortage of houses, settled in Akwa Ikot Eyo Edem Village in Akpabuyo LGA.

Speaking with NAN, Mrs Arit Friday, Leader of one of the two groups in which the women were divided for effective management, said they now have their cooperative society and personal bank accounts after the training on financial management.

While noting that all the selected women of their community were part of the project, she appealed to CASWI and its partners for more initiatives to empower the women and make them more self reliant in their community.

Similarly, Mrs Blessing Ekpenyong, Leader of the second group of about 100 women said what the women needed more was actually trainings which would enable them catch their fishes themselves and not just money.

Commending the Initiative, she said before the distribution of seeds to the women on Friday, they were first trained on proper ways of cultivating cucumber, pumpkin and other plants in a demonstration farm in Ikpan-Nkaya community in 2023.

She said the farm was very successful but they suffered a lot of loses because people around Ikpan-Nkaya community kept on stealing from the farm and the women could not get much.

“However, today we have adopted a new strategy as the seeds are distributed to the women who now have their personal farms in Akwa Ikot Eyo Edem and they will plant and harvest their produce.

“We are very grateful but as you know, not all women like farming, so we appeal for trainings in soap making, tailoring, to also empower other women who may not like to farm,” she said.

Speaking on the project, Mr Ifeanyi Damian, Project Manager for CASWI said the essence of the project was to empower women and raise their voices in their community so that they could be part of the decision making process.

Damian said after distributing the seeds to the women, they would be coming back in three weeks time to inspect the farms to see how well they were doing.

“Also, following the demands of the women, in a week time, we will be coming again to train all the women of this community on soap making and give them starter packs to enable them commence operation.

“However, the starter packs will be only for the women who were part of the training, as we do not want wastages,” he maintained.

It would be recalled that CASWI and its partners had earlier inaugurated a “garri” processing plant in Ekpri obutong IDP Camp in Bakassi and was constructing another plant in Calabar Municipality for refugees.

Excitement rains the air as GFO Orim Foundation empowers many in C’River North

No fewer than 45 people from Obanliku, Obudu and Bekwara Federal Constituency have been trained and empowered by the GFO Orim Foundation in Cross River State.

The event which took place at Obudu Council Secretariat, was a collaboration between the GFO Orim Foundation and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). Captured for the training were 35 young teenage mothers and at-risk girls, who were trained in beauty care and solar power installation, respectively.

Speaking at the event, the member representing Ogoja state constituency in the Cross River House of Assembly, Engr Thomas Aruku, applauded GFO Orim Foundation for the consistency in driving its vision of empowering youths in northern Cross River.

Aruku, who was the chairman of the occasion, noted that GFO Orim Foundation’s empowerment programmes have been going on smoothly in the last 6 years, pointing out that despite the fact the Chairman and benefactor of the Foundation, Chief Martins Orim, was no longer in power, the exercise had not been interrupted nor put on hold.

Chairman of GFO Orim Foundation, Chief Martins Orim, while thanking the ITF for the collaboration, said “the idea behind this programme is to create wealth for our people. It is to take our youths off the street, so that we reduce the menace of insecurity and decay in our society that push our youths into ‘Yahoo Yahoo’. This gives me the opportunity to give back to my people.”

He appealed to the federal government agency to continue to “leave your door open. I am waiting anxiously for you to beckon on us for the programme we have for this year. We are still to partner and we will continue to partner with you to take out as many youths as we can off the street.”

“Like I said in the last edition, this is a passion for me because I am a young man that did not grow up abroad. I grow up here in my local community. I have been to the farm. I have interacted with my peer group, I have interacted with my own very village. I’ve schooled in Obudu here. I understand the level of poverty of our people and I understand the reason to return back and provide my shoulder for my people to lean on. Once God gave me the opportunity to assume a high office in the society, the first thing I thought about doing was how I can return back to the society.

“What can I do to affect the society positively. I conceived the idea of floating this NGO. I launched it in less than one year in office. I’ve done several empowerment and trainings before started collaborating with ITF. I’ve trained people as mechanics; I’ve trained people as electricians, both automobile and housing; I’ve trained people as tailors; I’ve trained people as hairdressers; I’ve trained drivers; I’ve trained so many people. A lot are working. They are doing well. A lot of plumbers, tilers, masons. I’ve trained a lot of youths,” he said.

Chief Orim therefore congratulated the beneficiaries and charged them to make judicious use of the skills acquired and the start-up kits given to them so as to create wealth with it and impact their lives positively.

Also speaking, the Head of Training, ITF, Engr Suleiman, stated that the beneficiaries went through intensive three month training and were certified to provide services in their various specializations. He tasked them to make good use of their skills they have acquired for the betterment of society.

Commending GFO Orim Foundation for the gesture, a former Commissioner in the Local Government Service Commissioner, Mr Kelvin Adah, said “for those of us in Obanliku, Chief Martins Orim is a household name. He said done so many good things in Obanliku. I don’t need to talk too much or enumerate what he has done for that local government. God should give him the wisdom, the enablement to continue his good works.”

Similarly, the deputy speaker of Cross River House of Assembly, Hon. Sylvester Agabi; the Community Relations Officer to the Governor (Bekwara), Patrick Oko; the Obudu Chapter Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Mr Hilary Ibli, and other stakeholders present at the event, applauded Chief Orim’s empowerment initiative. They urged the beneficiaries to pray for GFO Orim Foundation for God’s continuous blessings and to keep doing more to reduce the crime rate in society.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke, thanked Chief Orim for adding value to their lives through training and empowerment. They noted that with the empowerment, Chief Martin Orim had succeeded in removing people from the street and turning them into self-employed persons. They however prayed for God’s blessing upon him.

    By Our Reporter

As part of events marking IDSDP (International Day of Sport for Development and Peace), the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) and CSED Initiative recently (6th to 8th April 2024) held a three-day introduction to cricket training for eighty Cameroonian refugees at the Adagom 1 playground, in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.

Ten volunteer trainee cricket coaches were also introduced to the game of cricket for the first time. The training event was supervised by Bibiana Ngwenifun (Leader of Adagom 1 Camp), who ensured that the female folks were equally represented at this training event.

The new cricket players and trainee coaches were taught the basics of cricket by NCF Development Officer, Blessing Etim and Patrick Edididong. On day 1, the training involved the introduction of cricket to the trainees, fitness drills, basic batting, bowling and fielding drills. Day 2, involved a mixture of classroom based training and field training. The areas covered were cricket seminar, detailed explanation of cricket laws, as well as the demonstration of batting and bowling techniques. On the last day of the training event, a practice game between residents of Adagom 1 and Adagom 3 was held.

Attendees at this groundbreaking training event were drawn from the three camps that are based in Ogoja Local Government Area, namely: Adagom 1, Adagom 3 and Ukende. At the end of the training event, cricket starter packs for training and match purposes that were donated by Lord’s Taverners and the NCF were freely distributed to the Sports Committee Leaders of Adagom 1 and Adagom 3 Camps.

Representatives of Ukende Camp were advised that the event organisers will hold a separate training event for them within the next six weeks, after they would have taken delivery of sets of cricket packs.

The Chairman of Cross River Cricket Association, Dr Macfarlane Ejah stated that their Association will build on the success of this training event to develop grassroots cricket in the Ogoja and Northern axis of the State.

Going forward, based on the NCF experience of using cricket to support IDPs in Uhogua Camp in Edo State, the current leadership of the NCF is expected to support their new cricket coverts by using cricket to provide them with psycho-social support, empower them in terms of using the game of cricket to learn soft skills like computing/coding, as well as promoting tolerance and respect for each other. More importantly, living in peace and harmony with the other residents of Ogoja community, is also a priority.

On their part, the Trustees of CSED Initiative, are currently exploring the possibility of introducing other sports (netball, table tennis, pickleball, and taekwondo) to residents of the three Cameroonian camps. CSED Initiative also hope to take on the challenge of building a multi-purpose playing court at Ukende Camp.

Subject to overcoming the issue of high cost of generating alternative source of electricity, as well as procuring 20 to 25 computers, CSED Initiative hopes to introduce the “Sporting Coders” programme to some selected residents of the three camps.

Ako Allan (a Cameroonian refugee) and his team, are already on ground waiting to take the benefit of the “Sporting Coders” programme to the next level. This is after the “Sporting Coders” programme was successfully piloted in Bayelsa State, by members of the netball team of Tare Pet Montessori Group of Schools. CSED Initiative will soon commence discussion with the NCF on how their grassroots players can also benefit from taking part in the “Sporting Coders” training programme in future.
