NYCN Election: The Right Thing Should Be Done – Stakeholders Insist

    By Kelvin Obambon

For the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Cross River State chapter to effectively fulfill its core mandate of grooming future leaders, the processes for electing its own leadership must be devoid of illegalities.

This was the position of stakeholders of the NYCN at an elaborate engagement with the Cross River State Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr Ijom Ukam, in Calabar on Tuesday.

The stakeholders, comprising former NYCN state chairmen, executive committee members, central planning committee members, eleco members, amongst others, observed that in recent time elections into the Council were fraught with so much illegalities, lamenting that the practice had not augur well for the NYCN as a body saddled with the responsibility of leadership training and mentorship.

They commended the Commissioner for the decision to bring everyone on board for the forthcoming election, saying it was a right step towards a credible and transparent electoral process. They affirmed that it was now time to right the wrongs upon which previous leadership of the Council rode to power by ensuring that the forthcoming election in the state conforms to the provisions of NYCN constitution.

The Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr Ijom Ukam, however assured the stakeholders that as a ministry with supervisory role over the NYCN, the election would be transparent, because according to him, no one would be left in the dark about the electoral process.

While clarifying that there was no special interest in the youth council election, the Commissioner however stated that the ministry was deeply concerned about the negative press generated recently by activities of the NYCN with regards to the forthcoming poll.

Barr. Ukam thanked the stakeholders for finding time to attend the meeting, stating that their contributions would guide the ministry to come up with a template for the effective conduct of the election. He also suggested regular interface between the ministry and the stakeholders, emphasizing that no one would be allowed to interfere in the affairs of the NYCN, even as he stressed the need for everyone to be on the same page.

Meanwhile, a member of the Cross River State House of Assembly Committee on Youth Development, Hon. Omang Charles, who attended the meeting, said a five-man committee would be set up to thoroughly look at the NYCN constitution in order to set things right.

On his part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duty, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, in his remarks, said that it was the responsibility of the stakeholders to decide on the kind of leadership that would work for the good of NYCN and the state at large.

“We owe ourselves and the younger generation a duty to fine tune the process. I want us to have for the first time an election that will be shown on the television”, he said.

C’River Group Condemns Lopsided Appointments into Governing Councils of Federal Tertiary Institutions

The 3rd Force, a socio political pressure group based in Cross River state, wishes to express its profound disappointment and unreserved condemnation of the recent federal appointments into the governing councils of 111 federal tertiary institutions, which have glaringly marginalized Cross River state. With only 6 nominations (with one chairmanship position), our state has been left in the lurch, despite being the only All Progressives Congress (APC) dominated state in the South-South geopolitical zone.

It has come to our attention that a faction of buccaneer political carpetbaggers, is scheming to thwart the governor’s initiatives. This group is driven by selfish ambitions for the 2027 gubernatorial race, and their machinations have now come to light. Their actions are akin to throwing a spanner in the works, intending to create disunity and portray the governor as ineffective in securing federal appointments.

We unequivocally state that such backstabbing tactics will not be tolerated. It is crucial for the prosperity of Cross River state that we present a united front and capitalize on our unique position as an APC stronghold in the South-South.

To those shadowy figures who think they can undermine our governor and the will of the people of Cross River state, know this: We are not blind to your underhanded tactics, and we will not stand idly by while you try to pull the wool over our eyes. Your attempts to destabilize our state government and weaken our representation at the federal level are not only self-serving but also detrimental to the progress and development of Cross River state.

We urge all true sons and daughters of Cross River state to stand united against these divisive elements and ensure that our state continues to thrive under the capable leadership of Governor Otu.

We call on the federal government to review and rectify this gross oversight in the appointment process and give Cross River state its due recognition and representation. The strength of our nation lies in its unity and fairness, and we believe that every state deserves equitable treatment.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take further actions if necessary. The interest of Cross River State is paramount, and we will not be swayed by the machinations of a few.

  • Nigeria still far behind in reaching its cancer care goal – NCS

Nigeria still far behind in reaching its cancer care goal – NCS

The Nigerian Cancer Society, (NCS) has disclosed that the nation still lagged behind in reaching its cancer care goal.

The call was made by Dr Adamu Umar during a courtesy visit to the ultramodern Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calabar on Monday.

Adamu and his team of cancer experts who  commended the leadership of the Centre for their efforts in addressing the scourge of cancer noted that the burden of cancer was still alarming in the nation.

He said while the Federal Government has put up a National Institute of cancer research and treatment to enhance timely data collection and advocacy, treatment was still very expensive not just for the poor but the rich too.

“We can address the fund gap by government doing the needful in creating the right infrastructure and empowering organisations to push for effective cancer care.

“The cancer health fund meant to cater for indigent breast, cervical and prostate cancer patients should be expanded to accommodate more cancers and more hospitals including private hospitals like Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

“Part of our suggestions as a Civil Society Organisation (CSO) is to have big cancer centres both public and privately owned, access this fund so that vulnerable Nigerians can benefit,” he said.

On her part, Dr. Aisha Mustapha, Chairperson, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Kaduna Chapter who was part of the team said she was happy that a private facility could provide comprehensive cancer care in Nigeria.

According to her, “I see a High Dynamic Range (HDR), brachytherapy machine and a linac radiotherapy machine which are state of the art,” she said.

Mustapha who is also a Cancer advocate and survivor asserted that if there were more centres like Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Nigeria, it would help the teeming women who need proper and effective cancer care.

Responding, Mr Yegwa Ukpo, Executive Director of the centre said he felt honoured for the visit of the society adding that it was an acknowledgement of the fact that they were having some impact on the cancer space.

Ukpo however said it was not yet “uhuru” as they were still looking at expanding the centre to become a one-stop-shop for cancer care, whether it is pediatric cancer, brachytherapy, surgeries and even radiotherapy for non carcinogenic purposes.

He said that two major challenges they have had over the years were patients not being able to afford cancer care while noting that they were trying to see ways of linking to the Federal Government’s  Cancer Health Fund to make treatment more accessible.

The executive director added that funds to expand the centre to a world class, one-stop-shop for cancer care was also a challenge they were working hard and hoping to surmount.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that part of the activities of the day included a tour of Asi Ukpo’s facilities and a decoration of the executive director as a lifetime member of the NCS for his contribution in cancer care.

  • Calabar Residents Grieve as Historic Monolith Sculpture is Torn Down

Calabar Residents Grieve as Historic Monolith Sculpture is Torn Down

The recent demolition of the iconic Monoliths sculpture at Zone 6 roundabout in Calabar has left residents and art enthusiasts in shock and disbelief. The sculpture, which stood as a symbol of Calabar’s cosmopolitan identity and rich heritage, was designed and built by the late Pastor Anthony Akinbola, a renowned Nigerian artist who has many works in other cities in Nigeria and has done exhibitions even in the United States.

For many, the Monoliths roundabout was more than just a piece of art; it was a testament to Calabar’s status as a center of unity for Cross River State. The sculpture celebrated the world-famous Monoliths found in Alok and other northern parts, showcasing Africa’s ancient civilization and cultural legacy.

The demolition of the Monoliths sculpture has sparked outrage and sadness among residents, who see it as the loss of a cultural landmark and a piece of their identity.

“It’s a tragedy that such a precious work of art has been destroyed,” lamented one resident. “The Monoliths roundabout was more than just a sculpture; it was a symbol of our history, unity and heritage.”

Others expressed frustration over the lack of consultation and transparency surrounding the decision to demolish the sculpture. “Why wasn’t the community consulted before such a drastic action was taken?” questioned another resident. “We should have been given the opportunity to voice our opinions and express our concerns.”

The demolition of the Monoliths sculpture also reignited discussions about the importance of conducting Social Impact Analysis before embarking on such projects. Many believe that if proper consultations and assessments had been carried out, the demolition could have been avoided or mitigated.

Governor Donald Duke’s approach to public art projects was highlighted as a positive example. During his tenure, Duke made efforts to engage the public and raise awareness about the significance of art and culture in shaping the identity of Cross River State. The successful launch of the Cross River logo, preceded by a public awareness program, demonstrated the value of community engagement in public art initiatives.

In contrast, the recent fiasco surrounding Governor Ayade’s attempt to change the colors and symbols of the state emblem served as a cautionary tale. The lack of public consultation and the abrupt nature of the decision led to widespread confusion and backlash from residents.

As Calabar mourns the loss of the Monoliths sculpture, residents are calling for greater transparency, accountability, and community involvement in future public art projects. They hope that lessons will be learned from this incident and that steps will be taken to preserve and celebrate the cultural heritage of Cross River for generations to come.

Representatives of the ministries of Education, Information and Culture, Social Welfare/Rehabilitation centres, Foundations and Non-Governmental Organisations from the UK’s ‘WE CAN ACCESS’, TAF and the organised private sector also participated in the workshop.

Speaking on the workshop tagged: ‘Sensitisation & Awareness Programme on Educational Services for Persons with Disabilities’, the Director-General of the TCTI, Professor Taoheed Adedoja, said the exercise is intended to equip PWDs through investments in knowledge, skills and infrastructure, that provide policies and solutions to enable them to live productively and to give them a sense of inclusion in the ecosystem of the society and globally.

The Director-General stressed the significance of the workshop and enjoined everyone to afford the Disabled all the opportunities they require to develop their self-esteem and break the stigma and discrimination against persons with disability.

Prof. Adedoja explained that the training will also boost the literacy and proficiency of the participants in the fast-growing digital economy, noting that the programme is in line with the vision of the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu for globally competitive manpower.

“The workshop is timely and in consonance with the spirit of Governor Otu’s government of inclusivity to extend knowledge to all and sundry, not minding one’s status.

“So we put together this training to build capacities of people living with disabilities, by making them employable and self-reliant in order to have effective economic independence in pursuing their individual and collective livelihoods. Therefore, the Institute is looking towards the less privileged and their handlers for capacity building,” Adedoja said.

In their commendation notes, the excited participants thanked the State Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, for providing for persons with disabilities in the 2024 ‘People’s First’ Budget which shows their inclusivity in the affairs of the State.

They commended the Teachers Continuous Training Institute for organising a mini exhibition that has further enlightened them on special needs and opportunities for the Disabled in schools and for being the first Institute in Nigeria to award Certificates to participants in both print and braille.

They extended commendations to the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), for the opportunity provided for disabled persons in the last eight years for admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The workshop identified some common challenges faced by persons with Disabilities including lack of opportunity for inclusive education, poor employment opportunities, physical and attitudinal barriers amongst others.

It also examined socio-cultural barriers such as stigma, prejudice and discrimination suffered by disabled persons and called for improved accessibility for the Disabled in the areas of cultural, leisurely and sporting activities, while calling on the state government to consider the employment of Special Education teachers in the proposed recruitment exercise for teachers in the State.

Attendees made a compassionate appeal to the Cross River State House of Assembly to pass and domicile the “Disability Discrimination Act” into law.

Investigation reveals that the exercise initiated by TCTI, Biase, is the first sensitisation programme by the Cross River State government to complement basic and fundamental knowledge through human capacity and manpower development, as only NGOs had shown such zeal or interest before now.
