C’River: Women’s voice, leadership Nigeria project bows-out after 5 years

    By Christian Njoku

The Women’s voice and Leadership Nigeria (WVL-N) Project officially closed-out in Cross River after five years of activities in the state to empower and support women in different thematic areas.

The Close-Out and Dissemination Ceremony which took place in Calabar International Conference Centre (CICC), on Tuesday, had the theme: “five years of impact in Cross River.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the WVL-N Project which commenced in 2019 was a five year project with funding from Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and implemented by ActionAid Nigeria in partnership with three Local Rights Organisations and 12 Community Based groups.

NAN also reports that the project addressed areas such as Gender Based Violence (GBV), against women and girls; women Economic Justice and empowerment programs and women political participation and leadership.

Speaking at the ceremony Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, Minister of Women Affairs said the Close-out was organised to take stock of key successes and outcomes on the implementation of the WVL-Nigeria Project in Cross River.

Represented by Mrs Jenny Akpan a Director at the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Kennedy-Ohanenye said the WVL-N project  had increased women’s participation in leadership in the respective states driven by the project.

She said the women have been able to utilize their inherent leadership and negotiation skills to address overwhelming issues of governance in their communities, states and the country in general which earlier defied previous efforts.

According to her, “we pray that these supports particularly in the passage of the gender bills before the National Assembly would be resuscitated and help in the  passage of the bills at the 10th National Assembly.

“I call on ActionAid Nigeria and her team that participated in the implementation of the WVL-N Project, to ensure the sustainability of the achievements and lessons learnt from the project with a view to expand same to the remaining states of the country,” she said.

On his part, Mr Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria said the event not only signified years of dedicated effort but celebrated the remarkable strides made in advancing women and girls’ rights in the region.

Represented by Dr. Comfort Oko, a Board Member of ActionAid Nigeria, Mamedu noted that their achievements in the last five years was as a result of  the support of global affairs Canada and three Local Women Right Organisations.

He said they were also supported by 12 Community Based Organisations (CBO) through which they provided direct support to 731, 924 women and girls in 10 Local Government Areas.

“With a significant investment of over N250 million, our project has touched over 3 million people in Cross River this is testament to the power of collaboration with our partners,” he stated.

Similarly, Dr. Victoria Emah-Emah, Executive Director of Neighbourhood Care-well Foundation said through the WVL-Nigeria Project with support from ActionAid, they had addressed over 348 cases of GBV against women in the last five years.

Emah-Emah asserted that following the WVL-N Project, many women in the state has emerged from the kitchen to the boardrooms in the state to drive change.

She however added that though ActionAid was bowing-out, they had developed structures that would help in the sustainability of achievements of the project.

Some of the groups that benefitted from the project and spoke to NAN, said the intervention has empowered them in fighting for social and economic justice, political leadership and participation and security of women.

Gov Otu seeks Assembly’s approval to sack CROSIEC Chairman, members

… Blames them for state’s inability to conduct local government election

The State Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu has requested the State Legislature’s approval to reorganize the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC).

The request, contained in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. A. Owan Enoh, highlighted the Commission’s  ineffectiveness and prayed the Legislature to ” act, under section 201(1) – (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, and pass an address to remove the Chairman as well as all the Members of the commission owning to serial ineffectiveness.”

According to the letter the State Government has, “observed with dismay a cavalier work attitude by the Chairman and members of the State Electoral Commission. This inertia has led to the State not being able to conduct Local Government Council elections which ought to have been held in 2023”.

The letter subsequently sought the Assembly’s approval to give Governor Otu, “the latitude to reorganize the Commission to enable the State to have elections to its Local Government Council as soon as possible”.

After considering the request, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem referred the matter to the House Committee on Judiciary Public Service Matters, Public Petition, and Conflict Resolution for in-depth study and recommendation.

  • With Oke On The Saddle, PFN Can Be Sure Of Turnaround – Isong

With Oke On The Saddle, PFN Can Be Sure Of Turnaround – Isong

Archbishop-elect Emmah Gospel Isong is the National Publicity Secretary, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Founder, Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI) a.k.a Faith Mansion World Center, with headquarters in Ikot Ene-obong, 8miles Calabar. In this interview, Isong gave insight of happenings around the PFN under the leadership of its National President, Bishop Dr. Wale Oke, the giant strides recorded upon mounting the saddle as president of the Christian organization and other sundry issues. NSAN NDOMA-NEJI brings you excerpts of that interaction.

You have been working under the Bishop Dr. Wale Oke -led national exco of the PFN for three to four years, precisely February will make it four years. What is your take on the personality, integrity of the man Bishop Wale Oke ?

It has been a privilege working under him for more than three years now as you have said as the elected National Publicity Secretary of the PFN. Don’t forget, I had worked under other Presidents. I was chairman of Cross River State under Papa Ayo Oritsejafor. I was the National Publicity Secretary first term under Dr. Felix Omobude, and now I’m still the National Publicity Secretary second term, with Dr. Francis Wale Oke. My take is that, he is a father figure in Pentecostalism. Dr. Wale Oke is a distinguished gentleman, apart from being an erudite preacher; he is prolific, highly educated man of God. He is highly educated, getting to about fifty years in ministry, even before he became the national president of PFN.

Dr. Francis Wale Oke who is the Chancellor of his own University called The Corner Stone University, has been in the rank and file of the PFN. He has served at different levels in the state; he has also served as a Vice President,  South West, a national deputy president and now serving as the National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria. He is a man of efficacy in prayer, a man of truth, integrity, and a man who calls a spade a spade. His Eminence is a round peg in a round hole and God has sent him to the Pentecostals, a more than fifty million Pentecostals, in a time like this. I say this with a clear conscience that never would we have had a better
leader than Dr. Francis Wale Oke. I find it as a pleasure to serve under this great leader.

How strong and supportive are the State Chapters of the PFN, are there issues on the Elections or Selections in any State Excos ?

Yes and no. No because the National President Dr. Wale Oke, has made sure that all state elections under his watch are conducted in such a constitutional and conducive atmosphere that will throw up at state levels leaders with capacity. For instance when in Lagos state, there was a breach of procedure, of course the National President by the advice of fathers of faith, cancelled that election. Infact incidentally, I was mandated as the national returning officer to re-conduct that election and it will interest you to know that all the stakeholders and members of the Lagos State Advisory Council (SAC) including the National Vice President were present in that election that was conducted by me, and it was not only very free and fair, but was under cameras, with strict constitutional compliance and the three candidates who contested for instance, congratulated themselves and embraced the winner Pastor Yemi Davis. That elections stands today as one of the best things that has happened to Lagos state. You know Lagos state is so central and important to our organisation, it carries the timbers and calibers of the PFN. So the right thing had to be done to the appreciation of all.

So you can see there are no “unsettled dust” in the Lagos State chapter. The Rivers state chapter recently not only conducted their elections, but we also got inaugurated and of course constitutional procedures were followed. Rivers state for instance with a 17 member attendance out of 25 member State Advisory Council produced a chairman (for a second term) in the person of Pastor Dagogo Jack who recently invited the National President with all the stakeholders in Port Harcourt to dedicate their state-of-the-art Secretariat.

We hereby congratulate him, also the Vice President of PFN (South South) the good people of Rivers State and the  National President himself. In Cross River Sate and several other states in Nigeria we had also conducted free and fair elections where State Chairmen peacefully emerged. So under the watch of His Eminence Dr. Wale Oke, the states have been stronger, and elections better and fairer.

How would you assess the PFN unity and vision under the current leadership of Bishop Dr. Wale Oke ?

Let me assure you one more time that Bishop Dr Francis Wale Oke is not just a National President of PFN in a time like this, he is a father even to the staff working at the national headquarters office. He knows when they are sick, he cares and knows when some of them should take a leave and visits them when need be. He sometimes send the National Secretary Bishop Dr. Cosmas Ilechukwu to visit them and so even the members of our staff are in good
    working conditions.

The mood of PFN Exco members are also that of unity, friendship, felicitations and congratulations. That notwithstanding, there may be a case of a national officer taking a bow out of personal reasons. Such cases also occurred in previous administrations and that does not by any way reflect rancor in the rank and file of our fellowship. Interestingly, we have no cracks in our walls. I repeat, the PFN under the watch of Dr. Francis Wale Oke has been stronger, richer, bigger, better. This administration is commencing the building of another National Headquarters in Abuja. The fellowship has acquired a strategic N25Om worth of Land (though this could by now exceed 300 Million Naira due to other expenditures like consultations,  registrations etc).

Our teaming members are quite ready and ever willing to donate generously in support of this noble project primarily because of the high level of trust, integrity, transparency, honesty and financial prudency of the present Exco led by Dr. Wale Oke.

As a spokesperson and also as a major witness and stakeholder, I do solemnly confirm that we are in a good shape and that by the Grace of God, come February 2025 when we shall be having our Biennial Conference/Elections, all our esteemed members, fathers of faith and the National Advisory Council (NAC) shall be filled with thanksgiving to God Almighty on this great improvements and achievements. May I also use this opportunity to invite members of the public to my Elevation Service and 60th birthday 5-Star celebration scheduled for Saturday October 26th 2024, of course the celebration will start from the 20th. The National President president of PFN will be one of the officiating ministers. As they say, seeing is believing.

  • Interview: Top govt officials doing everything possible to see Ayade’s ex-aide in prison without due process followed – Human Rights Lawyer, Ukweni

Interview: Top govt officials doing everything possible to see Ayade’s ex-aide in prison without due process followed – Human Rights Lawyer, Ukweni

Ntufam Mba Ukweni, (SAN), is a Calabar based human rights legal practitioner who believes in due diligence of the law. In this interview  Ukweni condemned what he described  as unprofessional approach allegedly employed by agents of Governor Otu’s  administration to press false charges against former aide to Governor Ben  Ayade, on Cocoa Development and Control, Ntufam (Dr) Oscar Ofuka, without following due diligence and process, a situation the legal practitioner said has pushed Ayade’s ex-aide to be in coma for the past 4 days, after he slumped in court.

Below are excerpts from the interview:

We heard  that one of your clients, Dr. Oscar Ofuka, a former Special Adviser to Gov. Ben Ayade on Cocoa Development and Control in Cross River state is still in Coma, after he slumped in court and hit his head on the ground?

It’s very sad. I have always maintained as a lawyer, that I cannot be against prosecution of any person who is suspected of having committed an offence. But in all circumstance, we must always act in accordance with what the law says it should be done. Our law presumes any suspect to be innocent until the court makes pronouncement of his guilt. It presupposes that a suspect should be treated with highest level of decency, and respect because you may eventually find out that, that suspect is innocent.

While not wanting to comment on what is before the court, on the basis of subjudice, but this in particular, is when I got to find out that he was arrested in his hometown that he brought army people to intimidate people in the farm, and I went to find out. I found that was wrong, he was taken to the army station at Edor Barracks at Ikom local government of Cross River state. First, they said he was a fake soldier after investigation of the suspect, they found out that the man was a real soldier. The army person was among those persons who were allottees of the government cocoa estate. After thorough investigation, the army man had been released because he wasn’t a fake soldier. He said to me, I am not a fake military man. I got the farm when the government wanted people to pay for farms. And they came and arrested me.

But the issue relating to those things from my own knowledge is before the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Abuja, and when I met with the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of the zone six police station in Calabar, on Thursday, he reliably told me that issues are not in his hands, that he has nothing to do with the cocoa. Some of the matters are before the AIG.

The people disturbing are government. The other time I accused Secretary to State Government (SSG) in trying to recount it, how is he going to recount that himself and the State Security Adviser (SSA), to the governor of Cross River state are the ones, or using them to torment innocent people. We just pray that nothing happens to Dr. Ofuka, because, while we are acting as human beings, there is God, because if he dies today his blood would be on them. That is what they should know. They should just pray that nothing happens to him.

Being in government and making use of the office to achieve the miles stone he had achieved. As Special Adviser to governor of Cross River on Cocoa Development and Control, was a major achievement. A new government cannot come in. If you want to set up commission of enquiry to investigate what happened during his regime that is acceptable in the government. But it cannot deny, the government cannot say whatever agreement, the previous government had entered into cannot work. Those agreements were done before the attorney general, with receipts from government paid into government revenue, internal revenue accounts.

The former attorney general sat and wrote those agreements, after signing agreements you now charged the people who signed the agreement of forging the agreements, how? Like I said they have brought about thirty something charges on them; on that basis that means the people who had filed cases to fight for their rights. They have agreements with the government, and that government should abide by the agreements instead of government pursuing their claims. The case
is in Etung, charged those people for criminal charges against them, start trial that they forge agreement how? We will deal with that when the time comes. But it looks like I said, I’m sorry to say so. It is very very irresponsible for government officials to come and say agreement that government had entered into with predecessor should not be obeyed. And then you start bringing frivolous charges.

The one they brought in high court how is it faring? Even the people, Collins Ogar that made the complaint could not come to testify. We expected them to come out, to be at the federal high court when the petition they wrote to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They couldn’t come to prosecute it and defend the petition they wrote EFCC. Is it this one they are going to defend? They said murder charge. The State Security Adviser (SSA) to the governor, and Secretary to State Government (SSG), know the people who killed, it was a fight between the rivalry group of the person appointed by the governor, in charge of cocoa allocation and the team of Secretary to State Government.

They all know that. Instead of going to tell the truth, and face those involved, that incident did not happen or take place near where the government of Ayade allocated to my clients, (allottees who are fighting for their rights). They know that, that matter is before the State Investigation Department (State CID).

The facts before the state CID have nothing to do with these thirty people they are charging with forgery of agreement. Is not close to that area, and the person who owned the farm where the man died, had made a statement. This approach of leaving the shadow to witch-hunt people with criminal charges have to stop. It is not proper. Government should not operate that way. I know previous administration had used that; it shouldn’t become a tradition because it is wrong.

And there are remedies, which people who are aggrieved could avail themselves. We pray that Dr. Ofuka should recover from coma, he is not afraid of standing trial. I have met with Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG who gave me four hours to come back to enable him go through the file but before the four hours is settle, for a matter he said he had no hand in, you now said they were charging him to court.

I am not complaining about whichever way they want to do their work. But I feel that having detained him for this length of time, without charge. Today is Saturday, I don’t know what charge as we were there others were there, I expected that they should have serve us with the charge that they were taking to court for. They did not serve us.

Was it traditional that they ought to have served you people with the charge that they were taking you to court for?

Yes it is traditional that you serve him with the charge or information. That is what takes him to the court. It’s traditional. You go and register the charge. That is why if there is no serving of the charge, you cannot compel the attendant of the defendant or accused person over that.

Did they not know that serving the accused with the charge was necessary?

The charges that were served on us, were the ones of forgery which are before the state high court, saying that they forged cocoa allocation agreements that were duly registered by the office of the attorney general, that money paid into government account, then you charge them with forgery, what sort of fraud is that in government? You collect people’s money and end up charging them to court for collecting their money. You collect people’s money to solve government problems, because they used that money to solve government problems. Government was having problems with landlords communities because rents and royalties were not paid for a number of years. They collected money from these people to enable the government solve the problem. It’s not that the money was collected and eaten by Oscar Ofuka, or his people. No. Government decided there are judgments of court, they had gone to court first and there are consent judgments in places of which those monies of which agreements were entered into. Money paid into the government account where the government took and settled the communities, which provided enabling environment.

What is your message to those having issues with the former aide to Gov. Ben Ayade, Dr. Oscar Ofuka?

My message to them is that they should remember tomorrow. Today is Oscar Ofuka, tomorrow might be them. They are certainly not going to be in office forever. Tomorrow another person would be there, they should know that what goes around comes around. Like I had always advised, things should be done properly in a way and manner that they should have been done.

But people are saying that Ofuka is faking the coma? I have gotten several calls from some persons saying that Ofuka’s coma is fake?

Faking what, Pretending what? Pretending for how many days? Today is the third day and you say is fake. Except they are surprised that the doctors are yet to pronounce him dead. God forbid!.

In Nigeria, Coma is not strange because we have seen circumstances where ex-top government officials who misappropriated public fund feigned coma, what makes you think Ofuka’s case is different?

The incident happened three days ago, as they took him to court, he slumped, probably because of what he might have passed through. You cannot take a man who is up to sixty years of age to four different cells of both the military and the police under two days perhaps without food in his stomach and expect him to withstand the stressed. Even as he is still in coma. Even as I speak, there are policemen at the hospital surrounding where he is lying down at the hospital bed. It means he is still in police custody guiding the hospital bed where he is. So, would he have pretended for this length of time? Nobody would want to pretend for all this time. Oscar was prepared to stand his trial. He is a very courageous person, and he knows his case. He is not a person who pretends. I pray nothing happens to him but for him to recover.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh and the State Security Adviser, Rtd. Major General Okoi Obono have both  debunked the allegations, exonerating themselves of any wrong doing.

  • Again, court strikes out suit seeking removal of Obong of Calabar

    By Our Reporter

The High Court of Cross River State, presided by Justice Elias Abua, has thrown out a suit which sought an order of interlocutory injunction to remove the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V.

Justice Abua said that giving such orders without any tangible reason would do “incalculable and avoidable damage” to such exalted office.

The suit is spearheaded by some Efik leaders, Etubom Essien Ekpenyong Efiok, Etubom Okon Asuquo and Etubom Micah Archibong, who incidentally were members of the 15-man Etubom Conclave that selected and proclaimed Edidem Abasi-Otu V as Obong of Calabar, in 2008, 2012 and 2013.

The suit is coming about one year after the Supreme Court gave judgment in favour of the Monarch in a suit instituted by a contender to the throne and former finance minister, Etubom Anthony Ani, who sought Edidem Abasi-Otu’s removal.

The claimants in the recent suit are curiously believed to have defected to Etubom Ani’s camp, after having reaffirmed the election of Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V on three different occasions over the last 16 years.

Sources at the Palace of the Obong of Calabar alleged that the said claimants may have been fronting for Etubom Ani who they declared Obong-elect last year.

The recent case, which had suit No: HC/278/2023, has Edidem Abasi-Otu V, Ntiero Edem Offiong Efiwat, Edem Ita Essien Ededem, Government of Cross River State and Attorney General of Cross River State as defendants.

Justice Abua, in his ruling, dated June 25, 2024, rejected the prayers of the claimants and noted “Application on Notice for an order of interlocutory injunction to restrain the 1st defendant (Edidem Abasi-Otu) from presenting himself for selection or parading himself as the Obong -elect or Obong of Calabar or performing any such functions of the office of the Obong of Calabar is not granted.

“The office of the Obong of Calabar is so highly revered throughout this State and beyond that for an order of injunction to be made restraining anyone from occupying it, the order must be manifestly shown to be deserved by cogent, positive and irrefutable evidence of witnesses that no one is left in doubt the firm ground upon which the decision is predicated.

“I believe that an incalculable and avoidable damage would be done to that office by this Court if it holds, at this stage, that either party is entitled to the reliefs and counter claims placed before this court when no evidence has been tendered by either side. The facts of this case lend themselves more to the position that the status quo be maintained.

“It is in the light of the above reasoning that I will refuse the invitation extended to me to make the orders prayed for here and hold that the status quo be maintained.”

The Court also rejected the claimants’ prayer to restrain the 4th defendant (Government of Cross River state) from “disrupting, hindering, questioning, harassing, intimidating the claimants/applicants and their associates, association and assembly.”

  • Wife of Ayade’s Ex-Aide Seeks IGP’s Intervention Over Alleged Detention of Hubby By Gov Otu’s Security Adviser

Wife of Ayade’s Ex-Aide Seeks IGP’s Intervention Over Alleged Detention of Hubby By Gov Otu’s Security Adviser

    By Nsan Ndoma-Neji

Wife of ex- Special Adviser to the Cross River State governor on Cocoa  Development and Control, Mrs. Joy Ofuka, has charged the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, Kayoede Egbetokun, to wade into what she described as unlawful arrest and detention of her husband, Dr. Oscar Ofuka, by Gov. Otu’s State Security Adviser (SSA) Rtd. Maj. Gen. Okoi Obono.

Ofuka’s wife gave the charge while  reacting to detention of her husband, by the State Security Adviser to governor Otu in Calabar on Wednesday.

Speaking in a telephone conversation with our Correspondent, Ofuka ‘s wife disappointment over what she described as use of political power to intimidate and oppress former aide to Gov. Ayade, stressing that no political office is occupied forever but as all would fade a way with passage of time.

In her words, Ofuka’s wife said, “I still do not understand the gang up against my husband despite the effort which  he sank to ensure that money owed cocoa landlords communities for sixteen years were paid.

“I see this detention as a strategy  to distract the ongoing court process to intimidate my husband so that allottees whose monies were used by the state government to defray the debt burden that was hanging on the government’s neck would come after my husband.

“Let me state categorically clear that there was no dime paid into my husband’s private pocket instead all the money used by the state government to settle the cocoa landlords communities passed through the state government account through the smart gov. platform as authorized by the court’s consent judgment.

“This is why I am calling on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD whom I am quite sure hates oppression, not to allow this evil perpetrated against my husband to continue.

“Even though am not a lawyer, I know too well that once a matter is in court, no one is allowed to arrest someone, unfortunately, the reverse.

“The harassment and intimidation by the State Security Adviser who is out to see my husband dead is unacceptable.

“He cannot use his position to oppress my husband like that. What crime or treason did my commit, that you took him to Afi Army Barracks at Ikom local government area, whisked him to Akim Barracks and finally to Federal Housing police station and to Zone 6 Police Commands Calabar in less than 48 hours?

“Is he a terrorist to be treated the way  he was being mal-treated? These are  questions that State Security Adviser needs to answer.

“His kids and I are really traumatized. The entire family have been in serious pain since all these started.

“We have not been able to sleep in the last three days. We are indeed so emotionally drained.

“My husband has not siphon any money belonging to the state government, all the cash that accrued from lease of government cocoa farms were paid into Cross River State government’s account and not to his private pocket. So why the oppression and harassment?

“Government they say is a continuum, what is the rational behind this arrest and detention?

“Is it because they tried to evict the allottees that got farms through my husband and legitimately paid money into the coffers of the state government and at the same time and the plot by certain individuals to evict  the allottees out from the farms failed following court injunction order?

“I called on Cross Riverians, well-meaning Nigerians that my husband did no wrong, except for the fact that he was only an agent to the immediate past administration led by Prof. Ben Ayade.

“To the best of my knowledge, money realized from lease of farms were money used by the immediate past administration to defray 16-years old debt that previous administrations owed the cocoa landlord communities as royalties for the land that the communities donated to state government to cultivate its cocoa estate.

“First they interrupted the court processes, secondly they alleged that a  worker who died in the estate was masterminded by Ofuka, the question  how?

“Why not allow the police to carry out a  thorough and independent investigation? From what we gathered the deceased died in plot 59/64 which is a bid far away from the cocoa plot that concerned my husband.

“Besides that, the master of the deceased can attest to the fact that my family do not have any problem with him, the cocoa plot which the master of the deceased work is not even in contention with my husband.

“I urged the State Security Adviser whom I know has integrity not to hinder the ongoing investigation, but to allow the police to do their job by carrying out a thorough investigation without prejudice, rather than resorting to intimidate our family members.

“What they are doing is a ploy to distract and scare off beneficiaries allottees that genuinely paid for farms so that they will be afraid to access the farms.

“When a matter is in court, as law abiding citizen, we allow justice to take its course. It’s barbaric for anyone to begin to harass and intimidate one whom they are in court with.”

However, the State Security Adviser, Rtd. Maj. Gen. Okoi Obono, who reacted  to the allegations during a telephone call with our Correspondent, denied issuing any order for the arrest and detention of Ayade’s ex-aide Ofuka, stressing that the allegations were not true but lies.

“I am not responsible for his arrest and detention,” he said.

Fake news remains most dangerous recipe for social tension, says PFN Scribe

    By Christian Njoku

Bishop Emmah Isong, National Publicity Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), has disclosed that fake news remained the most dangerous recipe for social tensions in Nigeria and globally.

Isong made the call on Wednesday in Calabar when the new executive and member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River Council paid him a courtesy visit.

The cleric who is the presiding Bishop of the Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI) and a patron of the South-South Zone of the NUJ said it behoved on the journalists to properly balance  stories and speak truth to power.

Noting that most of the wars that had been fought globally like the Iraqi war was as a result of fake news, he said the media played an important role in given a clear and true picture of things.

“It is important that we look into the welfare and health of journalists because the risk and lack of insurance in the job for many journalists makes it clear that a lot need to be done for newsmen.

“Having good welfare packages for members of the Union gives more prestige to the profession and the more prestigious the profession is, the more people will want to listen to the journalists.

“Also it is important for journalists to synergize despite their political, social and tribal differences and speak with one voice,” he said.

Speaking earlier Mrs Archibong Bassey, Chairman of NUJ, Cross River Council said as a new executive in the state, they had come to the cleric to ask for his blessings and guidance as a patron of the union.

She thanked him for all his support in the past while appealing that he continues to pray for the council for God to grant them divine success in all their endeavours.

“I have come to submit this Union into God’s hands because I desire peace, progress and open doors for my members,” she said.

C’River: I uncovered 1,572 teachers with fake certificate in SUBEB, says Commissioner

Cross River Commissioner for Education, Sen. Stephen Odey, has disclosed that he uncovered 1,572 teachers with fake certificate while serving as the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

Odey disclosed this on Tuesday in Calabar when the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River Council, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

The commissioner who served as the chairman of Cross River SUBEB between 2015 and 2022 before he was elected senator in a by-election, said he also discovered many teachers who bought their certificate with as much as N300 thousand.

He said looking at the challenges in the educational sector in the state, he has refused to fold his hand and allow the rot in the system, adding that teachers should be exemplary in everything.

“The rot in the educational system is enormous and we are facing this daunting challenge, that is why we need the support of the media to help in the fight to sanitise the sector.

“I won’t fold my hands to the fact that people are paying money to be appointed principal or head teachers when they don’t even have the capacity or where you give approval for a principal to collect N4,000 and he goes ahead to collect N8,000 from students.

“since I came into office as commissioner and from my days in SUBEB, I have seen a lot because while you are trying to do the right thing people will fight back, however, I am happy that people now know that we are doing the right thing,” he said.

Speaking further, Odey said education was suppose to be the center of excellence in the state because if that sector was affected negatively the state was finished.

He also used the opportunity to debunk claims made earlier in a media report that some states including Cross River had not recruited teachers since 2018, adding that while as chairman of SUBEB in 2019, he recruited 2,500 teachers.

He added that he had written to Gov. Bassey Otu for the approval to recruit 6,000 teachers because the greatest problem affecting teaching and learning in Cross River was inadequate teaching staff.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, Mrs Archibong Bassey, who commended the doggedness of the commissioner said the media in the state would continue to support him as he strived to sanitise the educational sector in the state.

According to her, “we need to groom our children to be able to compete with the children in other climes.

“I have been following your activities as commissioner and I have seen your passion, even to the point of clamping down on schools that did not meet up with the state’s criteria.”
