  • Why Cross Riverians didn’t participate in protest – Barrister Akiba

Why Cross Riverians didn’t participate in protest – Barrister Akiba

The Special Adviser on General Duties to Governor Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State, Barrister Ekpenyong Akiba, says Cross Riverians refused to partake in the nationwide protest that commenced on August 1, 2024, because of the respect they have for the governor who has been working vigorously round the clock to transform and reposition the state for the betterment of the populace.

Speaking in an interview, Akiba maintained that Governor Otu earned the confidence of Cross Riverians from his purposeful leadership, commitment towards the fulfilment of his campaign promises and delivery of democracy dividends to the doorsteps of the people.

He said it was for the trust the entire people of the state have in the governor that made them listen to his passionate appeal to remain calm, show patience and understanding by shunning the protest and embracing dialogue.

His words: “In Cross River today (August 1), it’s been very peaceful and for me it was expected. It has been very peaceful not because residents and citizens of Cross River are not in support of the numerous questions that are being asked nationally, not because they are not affected by hardship, not because they not are not affected by the pump price of fuel and a number of societal and economic issues. But because most of these questions, if not all, are begging for answers nationally. The answers cannot directly be provided within our state.

“Now, in the state, the people are in consensus that the governor right from his assumption of office has been able to display goodwill and purposeful leadership. He has been able to display reasonable and justifiable action. He has been able to present himself as an icon worthy of emulation in this generation. The people of Cross River State have seen that the potholes we witnessed a year ago are disappearing. The people have also seen that the weekly, sometimes daily kidnapping incidents in Cross River are disappearing.

“The young people have seen that our famous state library complex that was ramshackle and not given attention has received 60% action. The people have seen the governor roll out 40 fishing boats and 40 transport boats to riverine communities to enhance their livelihood. In his empowerment efforts, the people have seen the governor through ITF (Industrial Training Fund) partnership, has trained young people in crop production, sewing, etc, and at the end of the training, they are empowered. The governor has partnered with a Chinese company to train young people in electrical electronics. The people have seen it.

“The pensioners are saying that the governor inherited debt that was not his and has approved N10 billion for payment of gratuities. It has never happened. A governor came in to inherit that kind of debt and has the large heart to approve 10 billion naira so that our mothers, our grandmothers, our fathers should be able to earn what they have worked for. The people are saying if the governor has taken this kind of step should he not be supported? Should he not be prayed for? Should he not be encouraged?”

Continuing, the special adviser on general duties added: “So in Cross River State, the Nigerian Labour Congress leadership, TUC leadership, NANS leadership, NACRISS leadership, Transport association leadership, market women leadership, civil society organisation leadership, name it, they have all come together to say that the governor in Cross River State has displayed readiness to deliver democratic dividends to the people, and there will be no need to embark on any protest that will not bring results. Because the questions that we want the federal government to answer are questions that can be answered without destroying, vandalising, and creating a situation that might lead to the loss of lives.”

He noted that Cross Riverians completely agreed with the governor as indicated in his state broadcast that the massive destruction occasioned by the ENDSARS protest in 2020, and the heavy loss it brought upon Cross River, should be a good reason why a repeat of such shouldn’t be allowed.

He thanked the people of Cross River for their understanding and commended the religious leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders who have given the direction of peace in the state.

  • Cross River Plays Host to PIND’s Niger Delta Peace & Security Network Meeting

Cross River Plays Host to PIND’s Niger Delta Peace & Security Network Meeting

The Meeting which held in Calabar the state capital metropolis on Thursday featured a retinue of security personnel, traditional rulers, petty traders, religious leaders and development practitioners across the state etc.

The PIND Niger Delta Peace & Security Network Meeting (NDPSN) which was themed ‘Promoting Coordination among Stakeholders Working on Peace, Security and Development in the Niger Delta’, introduced the participants to a rich array of development narratives.

The facilitators, namely, Solomon Ndem, Ben Usang and Efio-Ita Nyok, highlighted security and peace issues including introducing participants to Foundation for Partnership Initiative in the Niger Delta (PIND) and overview of the NDPSN, mainstreaming peace building and conflict sensitivity, PIND SMS-based conflict early response system, discussions/reactions as well as post meeting activities and expectations.

During his facilitation, Usang emphasised the need for mainstreaming peace building in every facet of the Nigerian society especially the Niger Delta region whether in business, corporate environment, politics and otherwise. He particularly tasked the participants to be sensitive during everyday social relations with neighbours, colleagues, relatives, friends and even strangers.

Usang said that it is important that participants ‘take cognizance of conflict sensitivity in communications about ethnic narratives and the like’. Usang exemplified his presentation with certain Nigerian tribes who are wont to, through their traditional mode of communications, cast indigenes of neighbouring tribes as natural slaves to them. He said such a trend capable of stoking conflict is unacceptable.

Efio-Ita Nyok who walked the participants around the nitty gritty of PIND’s SMS-based Conflict Early Response System, on his part, argued that the ultimate essence of the SMS-based facility is to provide data which is sacrosanct in designing and implementing development interventions on conflict management as well as influence the formulation and implementation of public policy around security issues.

Nyok who informed the participants of the components of the integrated Early Warning System of PIND of comprising the following, field monitors, SMS based incident reporting platform, peace map, research/analysis and prevent team/councils, tasked them to commit to post event peacebuilding activities such as peace messaging and conflict mitigation.

  • I challenge Senator Eteng Jones Williams to take Trinity Jesam off the streets of Calabar, University Don fumes

I challenge Senator Eteng Jones Williams to take Trinity Jesam off the streets of Calabar, University Don fumes

A lecturer in the University of Cross River (UNICROSS), Dr. Fabian Njah Bassey, has tasked the Senator representing the Central Senatorial District, Senator Eteng Jones Williams, to take one of his loyalists, Dr Trinity Jesam off the street of Calabar.

Dr Bassey who lectures in the Department of Mass Communication, threw the open challenge to the Senator via a post on his Facebook account, while replying to a post made by Trinity.

Trinity Jesam had taken to his Facebook account to share a post about the federal lawmaker’s attendance at the Niger Delta Development Commission’s (NDDC) Executive Management Engagement with Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities and Selected Stakeholders, in which Senator Eteng Williams commended the interventionist agency for launching the Youth Internship Scheme that would pay N50,000 monthly to 10,000 youths from the region.

But reacting to the post, Dr Bassey lamented over issues of infrastructure, poor social and economic conditions and low level of human capital development that have plagued the Central Senatorial District and therefore wondered how N50,000 stipend would bring a turn around in such situation.

According to him, “This isn’t what we want at the moment. We want sustainable development. Our people are dying of hunger and starvation, our youths are roaming the streets without jobs, our children are out of schools because their parents can’t pay their fees, our farmlands are uncultivated due to insecurity, our cars are crashing due to bad roads, our hospitals are ill-equipped, our schools are underfunded, etc. And they come to engage youths with a paltry N50,000 monthly but reserve the best of jobs for their children.”

He regretted that “Even the writer of this article is not gainfully employed but he’s been writing articles to promote this Senator Eteng Jones Williams right from his days as Honourable Member of CRSHoA. I challenge the Senator to take Trinity Jesam off the streets of Calabar and get him a job for the numerous publicity services he’s rendered to promote his activities. Until then, let nobody tell me anything regarding his “good” works.”

  • Women engineers move to boost food production in C’River

Women engineers move to boost food production in C’River

    By Christian Njoku

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, (APWEN), has moved to boost food production in Cross River by providing inputs for a women farming cluster in the state.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN), National President of APWEN, Dr. Adebisi Osim said as an association they looked at the  situations in the nation and decided that the best thing to do was to help ensure food security.

Osim said to that they targeted a women farming cluster who were the ones that worked on the farms to provide food and supported them with inputs.

“The overall aim is to raise agric entrepreneurs even among engineers and to boost food production in the state and nation at large,” she said

On his part, Mr Bassey Emogor, Programme Manager, Cross River Agriculture Development Programme, (ADP) commended APWEN for the gesture while noting that agriculture used to be Nigeria’s mainstay until oil was discovered.

Emogor said oil made Nigerians lazy to the point that the nation could no longer feed itself and had to rely on importation and palliatives to survive.

While encouraging the farmers to be strong and dedicated, he said he would help them in ensuring they got necessary inputs and technical support to make them successful farmers

Similarly, Mrs Justina Ulafor, Alternate Chairman of the Committee on Food Security and Irrigation Development in APWEN said they went into the programme to change the lives of farmers from subsistence to business.

Ulafor said what they were doing was the first phase and would ensure that the project was expanded in the second phase and start looking towards helping the women to attract grants from partners.

“We will be supplying the women with 50 bundles of hybrid, high yielding cassava stems; 25 kilograms of maize seeds; herbicides; fertilizers among others enough for 2 hectares of farmland and from there we will expand in the next phase,” she said.

Also speaking to NAN, Mrs Monica Odi, Coordinator of the Passionate Women Farmers who were the recipients of the inputs expressed gratitude to APWEN, adding that, they had not received such help before.

Odi said they had about 50 hectares of farmland but have only been able to cultivate two hectares because farming was capital intensive and expansion required more money and machinery.

She however added that another major challenge they had as a group was transportation to the farm which was far away from town in Akpabuyo Local Government Area and solicited for a bus to help convey the women to and from the farm.

  • Cocoa Farmer Fingers  Colleague Over Abducted  Worker, Seeks Gov Otu’s Intervention

Cocoa Farmer Fingers  Colleague Over Abducted  Worker, Seeks Gov Otu’s Intervention

    By Our Reporter

A farmer working on the 32 hectares of  cocoa belonging to late Chief Ogar Asam’s farm in Ajassor, that shares a boundary with Abonita Cocoa estate, in Etung local government area of Cross River state, Mr Mac Prince Mbu-Liku,  has raised the alarm over disappearance of one of his workers  named, ‘Mike’ accusing a fellow farmer, Mr Asu Njor, of knowing the whereabouts of the missing worker.

Mac Prince made the allegations while complaining on what he described as intimidation and abduction of his workers in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Wednesday.

Mike, who is about 24 years old is said to be missing after a group of men pretending to be taskforce operating at the Abonita cocoa estate which shared a common boundary with late chief Ogar Assam’s 32 hectares cocoa farm, stormed the plantation, bundled three of Mac Prince’s workers, got them well beaten before handing them over to the Area command’s police station where they were thrown into the cell and allowed to cool their heels in police net in Ikom local government area of Cross River state.

Mr Mac Prince alleged that Mr Asu Njor, knows the whereabouts of his missing worker, asking the state governor to wade into the matter by asking Mr Njor  to produce his worker.

“Njor Asu an indigene of Agborkim, cannot come and inherit someone’s and at Ajassor, he should be called to order and asked to stay of my family’s  property.

“On Sunday July 28, 2024, I left the village for Calabar, the Cross River State capital, only to be called that Mr. Njor  sent some thugs on the pretense that they were members of a taskforce to arrest anyone they find in my farm, and as the taskforce got to the farm they succeeded in bundling three of my workers, and took them to the
police and left them in police custody.

“What I don’t understand is reason for the third worker who is by name Mike  not among the three who are still in police custody.

“The question now is who are these members of taskforce at Abonita cocoa estate, given the fact that government has long disbanded the  taskforce. The question now is, who is behind the taskforce.

“As I speak, one of these workers is still missing. From what I gathered only two are in police custody with one still missing.

“From what I gathered, before my workers were finally whisked away by the said taskforce, my workers seriously were intimidated and frightened as a result of sporadic gunshots in the air to get my workers scared.

“As I speak, one person is still missing, they brought out two, and I didn’t know what they have done to the third person. I have document with me showing that government had disbanded the taskforce, so I don’t know if the one Mr Asu Njor, had been parading with is his personal taskforce or that of government.

“I don’t know if Njor, has become a government official or cocoa allocation chairman, to be moving with a taskforce. Where is the source that he  has been drawing his strength from.

“The 32 hectares cocoa plot which is in contention with state government is a property of Chief Ogar Asam’s family, the governor had in one of the  stakeholders meetings told them not to include it among farms to be allocated to allottees, I have document to back up my claims,” Mbu Liku maintained.

“What baffled me is that on March 6, the state governor instructed that part of that land should not be included in the allocation, because it was not a property of the state government, unfortunately Oscar Ofuka and his cohorts withhold land and hid, pretending to be keeping it for government, using the land to harbour thugs.”

But in a swift reaction to the allegations, Mr Asu Njor, said “We saw two of their boys in our cocoa farm and we arrested them and handed them over to the police for stealing our cocoa.

“They are living at Okundi, but we caught them right in our farm and handed them over to police any other person he is mentioning we don’t know about that, the two we arrested were caught harvesting our cocoa and we did what any law abiding citizen would have done by handing them to the police.”

Confirming the incident, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) in the matter, Mr Akparawu (surname withheld) and the Commander, Area Command Ikom, Mr Akanonu Frank,  said, “We have two of the suspects with us, we just released two of the suspects to them on the basis
that they were daily paid labourers and two are still with us. Don’t know what you are talking about a missing person,” he said.

In her reaction to the issue on telephone conversation, Police PRO SP Irene Ugbo said complaint is yet to be lodged with the command on missing worker.

  • Just In: APC to hold solidarity rally in Cross River from August 1st

Just In: APC to hold solidarity rally in Cross River from August 1st

    By Kelvin Obambon

The Cross River chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says it will be holding a solidarity rally across the state. This is coming on the heels of the planned nationwide protest against economic hardship in Nigeria billed to take place on August 1st 2024.

Addressing a news conference in Calabar on Wednesday 31st July, state chairman of APC, Barr. Alphonsus Eba, said that the rally which will begin from 1st to 11th August, will highlight the achievements of the federal and state governments, while also appealing to the people to give the government more time for the policies put in place to yield positive results.

According to the APC chairman, “As a party we have to show solidarity with our governor as a way of encouraging him to do more. We shall also show solidarity with Mr President for all the wonderful things he has been doing, which we will use this rally to roll out to our people to know; and in doing so we’ve complied with the order of the federal government through the IG, that anybody who wants to be on the street tomorrow (Thursday 1st August) must do so by getting a permit.

“APC Cross River State in conjunction with right thinking Cross Riverians across party lines have written to the Commissioner of Police for permit to also be on the street. Our commencement point will be the party secretariat through the 12km carnival route. Our point of harbour will be the 11-11 roundabout. We will also intermittently spend time at Rabanna. We will also have time at Efio-Ete junction. These are the routes we have secured.

“To our knowledge, until this moment it is only APC Cross River State that has secured the permit from now till 11 of August to use these roads. From what we have gathered the only available roads for anybody that wants to foment trouble will be around Odukpani junction heading towards Itu head bridge.

“Please take note that we are not looking for trouble. We only want to be on the street to sing praises and thank God Almighty for giving us the duo of President Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and the Sweet Prince that has brought sweetness to the land. At the end of it we will be having series of engagements with youths and students, religious groups, support groups, IPAC, farmers, civil servants, NURTW, Keke riders, independent marketers and the various groups, all in the name of telling them this is what we have done. The market women will not be left out.”

  • Opinion: Legor remains one of the most popular & cherished politicians from northern C’River – Simon Utsu

Opinion: Legor remains one of the most popular & cherished politicians from northern C’River – Simon Utsu

I was in Calabar last weekend for the burial of the father-in-law of my former MP, Legor Idagbo. It was a very well organised and attended event. In place of a service of songs, a star studded musical concert was held. I enjoyed every bit of that. The crowd was entertained by Sunny Neji, Iyanya, Effiom Trombone and some of the members of the band of the late Chief Duke. I was pleasantly surprised to see the array of political attendees, led by Governor Otu who came earlier than anyone and was one of the last to leave. Let’s not forget he hasn’t held a political office in over a year. With what I saw, it’s okay to say Legor remains one of the most popular & cherished politicians from northern Cross River & the life time leader of Bekwarra politics.

The funeral service on Saturday morning took me back to Calabar road, just beside my primary school, Madonna Montessori, & this evoked a lot of pleasant memories. The reception which followed later was equally enjoyable. I was touched by an appeal made by the speaker of the CRSHA, when he called Sunny Neji & Iyanya up to the stage & appealed to them to do everything within their means to make sure local star act, Real P Ajaba, who had just performed earlier, blew on the national scene.

In all, it was great & commendable seeing the family of the deceased celebrating his life the way they did, rather than mourn.
