C’River: NAS kicks against examination malpractice in secondary schools

    By Anthony Uwadiegwu

The National Association of Seadogs,  NAS, Frigate Deck, has described examination malpractice as a menace  ravaging the educational system of Nigeria which has the capacity to derail the bright future of young people if not curtailed.

The Association further added that if due diligence was followed our certificates would not be doubted anywhere in the world.

NAS through a lecture it organised to enlighten students at the Community Secondary School Ikot Ewa in Akpabuyo at the weekend, tasked students on the need to be diligent and hardworking in a bid to become better and successful people in the society.

Speaking in a lecture titled “Causes and Effects of Examination malpractice amongst Secondary School students”, the Guest lecturer, Dr Emmanuel Ekanem revealed that examination paper leakage occurred first in 1948, adding that the menace was an old act.

Dr Ekanem explained that students were not the only culprits but teachers,  parents, school heads were all part of the nefarious activity.

He listed external help, giraffing, “microchips”, inscriptions, miracle centres, the use of internet for leaked exam papers as forms of examination malpractice, while urging students who are mainly the people involved to desist from it, describing it as an irregular and illicit behavior.

According to him, examination is just a system to help teachers move students to the next level of acquiring  knowledge and it produces certificates as evidence.

He said: “You don’t need to be involved  in examination malpractice, it is an irregular behavior which contravenes examination rules.

“Which you are involved it reduces your capacity and can cast doubt on your certificates, as many may not be able to defend such, hence the integrity of such grades/certificates becomes questionable.

“Examination malpractice started as far back as 1914, but the Senior Cambridge  examination papers first leaked in 1948. Examination malpractice is a form of corruption and in most cases these challenges start from the home due to pressure occasioned by poor parenting.

“Some parents don’t want their children to choose what they want to be, coercing them to study science or arts by force as the case may be thereby putting undue pressure on the child,” he said.

He urged the students to do away with the easy route, face their studies and the result would make them proud in the end.

On his part the Principal of Community Secondary School, Ikot Ewa, Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Mr Inyang Bassey lauded NAS for the lecture, adding that parents must nurture and respect the wishes of their children to study what they have passion for.

According to him, most children are technically inclined and oriented as many of them are not really interested in plenty grammar.

“Many of them want to work with their brains and hands and not in all the theories alone, technical education is key, it will reduce examination malpractice in Schools,” Bassey said.

Also speaking, the Chapter President NAS Frigate Deck, Mr Ubio Oviong, said examination malpractice was a menace that needs to be curbed as it had eaten deep into the fabrics of our educational system.

Oviong added that students must build capacity not just for now but for a broader spectrum to be able to compete in any part of the world.

He further asserted that if exam malpractice can be curbed our certificates would not be doubted anywhere in the world.

Survival rate for breast cancer in Nigeria is below 50 percent – Pink Africa Foundation

    By Kelvin Obambon

A non-governmental organization, Pink Africa Foundation, has disclosed that the survival rate for people who suffer from breast cancer in Nigeria is below 50 percent compare to 99 percent in developed countries.

The Executive Director of Pink Africa Foundation, Victor Ekpo, made the disclosure during the flag off of breast cancer awareness month in Calabar on Saturday 19th October, 2024.

Speaking about the breast cancer awareness tagged, ‘Calabar Go Pink Day’, Ekpo said that beyond Calabar “we are also doing Go Pink Days in African countries by Pink Africa Foundation, collaborating with multiple partners, medical institutions, hospitals, non-profit organizations; bringing together everyone to put a stop to breast cancer.”

He said the massive attention on breast cancer was justified by what he called high incidence of avoidable death, explaining that “in breast cancer the avoidable deaths are enormous. The survival rate for breast cancer in Nigeria is below 50 percent because the awareness is very low. Meanwhile in the developed countries it’s above 99 percent. When breast cancer cases are presented early women are able to live longer.

“In Africa we are making a great effort to ensure there’s sufficient awareness, so that when once a woman sees a lump in her breast she should be able to know that there’s something off about it. In the past, due to lack of awareness people see a lump in their breast they stay at home and treat it as they can.”

Ekpo said that apart from the awareness there was also free screening of 1,000 men and women for breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostrate cancer, HIV, Hepatitis and as well as general medical screening.

“We have people on ground. Once you are being screened and anything is detected we refer you to the hospitals. We have discounts in different hospitals, and we also have free treatment for women that we see lumps in the breasts. We’ll give them free cancer treatment. We partner with different organizations, including Asi Ukpo Cancer Center to provide surgery and radiotherapy for free,” he said.

Cross River Commissioner for Women Affairs, Edema Irom, urged women in the state to take the issue of breast cancer serious by ensuring regular breast check. She commended Pink Africa Foundation for embarking on the awareness campaign, stating that the Ministry of Women Affairs would collaborate with the Medical Women Association to take the sensitization down to the rural areas.

President of Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Cross River State branch, Dr Minika Hagan-Okon, said the sensitization was not particularly for the women alone, as men are also susceptible to breast cancer. She declared that breast cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, because according to her, “early detection is key.”

Hagan-Okon identified self-esteem and traditional beliefs as some of the factors that prevent women from seeking early treatment for breast cancer. She cautioned against lifestyle that increases the risk of cancer such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake, while at the same time advised people to eat healthy foods that contain fresh vegetables and fruits.

Painting a gloomy picture of breast cancer cases in Cross River, the MWAN president emphasized the importance of regular screening. She disclosed that the association has ‘Well Woman Clinic’ at Ediba Primary Healthcare Centre that attends to women every second Wednesday of the month.

“Breast cancer case in the state is bad. On Wednesday we had our Well Woman Clinic. Out of 19 people we screened, 5 of them have breast lump. A lot of people hide it until it gets worse. By next year we will start publishing our data so that you know how serious it is.

“Breast and cervical cancers are the two most preventable cancers in Nigeria. Early detection saves life. We are calling on well-meaning individuals to come and sponsor us to go beyond Calabar metropolis – places like Ikom, Ogoja, Obanliku and those interior villages to screen because sometimes they have it, but they don’t know,” she said.

On his part, the executive director, Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Center, Yegwa Ukpo, said the center was poised to support awareness around cancer because of its prevalence.

“The situation is quite bad. Cancer is becoming a national emergency. Last time I checked they say we have about 288,000 cases of cancer in the country, and we don’t have enough centers. We are one of the few places people can come for treatment. We are trying to see how we can expand the service we offer,” he said.

100th Anniversary: PCN Ishie Town Parish honours dedicated, outstanding members

    By Kelvin Obambon

The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN), Ishie Town Parish, has held its ‘Awards and Tributes Night’ in which some dedicated and outstanding members were honoured, as the church marks her Centenary Anniversary.

The event which took place on Thursday 17 October, 2024 at the PCN Ikot Ishie, Calabar, had some of the awardees, including the Prelate and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, His Eminence, Rev. (Dr) Ekpenyong Akpanika, in attendance.

In a welcome address, the parish minister, Rev. Atim Ayara Obong, said the church was celebrating over 100 years of presbyterian witness in Ishie community, and 100 years of the foundation laying of the church building.

She said “some of the awards are posthumous, and are meant to honour those who had laboured since the founding of the PCN Ikot Ishie. The church is also honouring those who are still alive for their sacrifice, labour and service. It’s simply an award of recognition for their services in the Lord’s vineyard.”

Delivering a keynote address titled, “The Legacy of Faith and Community”, Rev. Daniel Etim, journeyed into the past and unraveled how the PCN Ishie Town Parish was brought into existence by the grand patriarch of the Ishie people, Obong Ishie Offiong Okoho. He noted that since its founding, the Ishie Town Parish has evolved into becoming one of the grade “A” parishes in the cradle of presbyterianism in Calabar, and Nigeria as a whole.

The keynote speaker narrated that “Ishie Community came in contact with the Christian faith between 1880 and 1906 through its Grand Patriarch, Obong Ishie Offiong Okoho, who at that time was residing at Efak Eyamba in Duke Town with his descendants (Ikot Ishie).

“Rev. Hope Masterton Waddell started a Church in Duke Town with a local building erected in 1847. The language of worship was “pidgin English” which was also language of trade, and was interpreted in Efik. Obong Ishie Okoho and his family were part of the worship life in Duke Town. Later on, crises arose due to economic, social and political standing among the Chiefs. They started rotating worship services in their residences. Among the Chiefs whose compounds were used for worship and religious activities were Archibong Duke, Duke Ephraim, Henry Cobham, Antigha Cobham, Bassey Offiong, and Ironbar.

“Perhaps, during this period of crisis and scrambling for “ownership” of church and members, Obong Ishie Okoho acquired land and relocated from Efak Eyamba and founded Ikot Ishie (Ishie Town), the community we are now this evening. On arrival at the new location, Obong Ishie with his descendants and converts attended Sunday worship services at Obutong (Old Town) at its old site near Calabar River, but weekly church activities took place at Obong Ishie’s Palace at Enen Ishie (Ishie Square). Later as the community grew, Enen Ishie became a worship centre and the people stopped trooping to Obutong to worship.

“In 1917, Enen Ishie worship centre was inaugurated as a congregation and attached to Obutong and Ekorinim Congregations. This action gave birth to Northern Calabar Parish.

“In 1981, the committee of Ishie congregation applied to Calabar Presbytery for a Parish Status with the reason “to help her improve her spiritual potentialities within the church and community….” Parish Status was granted Ishie PCN on January 10, 1981 with all its functional arms and service groups, such as Men’s Christian Association (MCA), Women’s Guild (W/G), Presbyterian Young Peoples Association (PYPAN), and Christian Girls in Training (CGIT) and Choir.

“The Parish permanent structure was built in December, 1924 – hence our celebration. Today, Ishie Parish is one of the grade “A” parishes in the Cradle of Presbyterianism, Calabar, and indeed the whole of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria.”

Rev. Etim noted that Ishie Town PCN and Ishie community constitute an integrated charismatic union such that one hardly sees the difference between them.

“Ishie Church “owns” Ishie community and Ishie community “owns” Ishie Church. The Church offers the community faith, hope, and love, while the community offers the church support system, acceptance, and respect. Ishie Town Hall is opposite Ishie Church.

“Many Elders of the Church are also Elders in Ishie Traditional Council. History has it that there was a time both had a common Treasurer. If the community was in financial crisis and the church had money, through mutual consent, the church will bail the community out and vice-versa,” he said.

Concluding, the clergyman charged the PCN Ishie Town, to among other things, continue to seek God’s guidance through prayer and fasting; prioritize the welfare of widows and the aged; give assistance to indigent students; think of orphanages and old people homes; provide informal education and skills acquisition training programmes for those with low aptitude for formal education.

The event climaxed with the presentation of awards to deserving members of the PCN who have distinguished themselves in their service to God and humanity.

Some of the awardees were the current prelate and former prelates of the PCN; HRH Etubom Effiom Okon Effiom, the clan head of Ishie Clan; Justice Ikpeme; Chief Ettah E. Usoh; Elder (Mrs) Uyi Effiong Offiong; Elder Fidelis Etim; Sir Chief Felix Okon Nsemo KSJ; Elder (Mrs) Imelda Bassey; Henss Charity Foundation; among others.

Posthumous awards and tributes were also paid to late Obong Ishie Offiong Okoho, the Grand Patriarch of the Ishie people; late Mr Ene James; late Chief Asuquo Obo-Ishie; late Elder Chief Johnson Ishie; late Madam Grace Edem Effiom; among others.

Let’s feel the impact of your Corporate Social Responsibility in Cross River, journalists charge NNPCL

    By Kelvin Obambon

Journalists in Cross River State have charged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to extend its infrastructural development programmes like schools, medical laboratories and scholarship programmes to people of Cross River State just like the company had been doing in other states.

The media practitioners who came under the umbrella of Cross River State Journalists, also appealed for sponsorship of human capacity development training for journalists to sharpen their skills in energy reporting and other critical areas of human endeavour.

They argued that 80 percent of Nigeria’s oil is tapped from the Niger Delta region, lamenting that unfortunately the NNPCL had failed to extend the Corporate Social Responsibility carried out in other parts of the country that are not even oil-producing states to Cross River and other Niger Delta states.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Cross River State Council, Comrade Archibong Bassey made the appeal in Calabar during a brainstorming session on the hike in pump price of petrol and its attendant hardship on the citizens.

Bassey appealed for robust collaboration between the NNPCL and the media in the Niger Delta region in the area of information dissemination.

The media practitioners urged the NNPCL to adopt a proactive approach to information sharing, lamenting the lackadaisical attitude in dispensing information, which they claimed had led to speculations, suspicion and criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Mr Solomon Oseagha, a social activist and friend of the oil industry, he was in the state to draw a line between fact and fiction regarding the perception by people about the NNPCL and what the company stands for. He said it was wrong for anyone to conclude that the NNPCL is responsible for the hike in the price of petroleum product in the country.

Oseagha charged the Nigerian Mainstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to rise to their responsibility of ensuring that marketers dispensing low-quality petrol with faulty metres are sanctioned.

He commended the leadership of NNPCL under Mele Kyari for always upholding transparency and prudence in its operation, even as he maintained that the company does not regulate activities in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.
