IWD 2025: You are enough, Asi Ukpo Cancer Center challenges women

    By Christian Njoku

Asi Ukpo Cancer Center in Calabar has challenged women to believe they are enough and do not need to be married or have children to start seeing themselves as people of value.

This was disclosed by Mr Yegwa Ukpo, Executive Director of the Centre during an engagement to commemorate the 2025 International Women’s Day Celebration with the theme: “accelerate action.

International women’s day is commemorated annually on March 8 as a global day for celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and also to call for gender equity.

Ukpo said the 21st century woman needs to be radical and start seeing things from her own perspective because many people including women fundamentally see things from men’s perspective.

“Women should start seeing themselves as people of value, they don’t need to be married or to be mothers to be people of value, in fact they are enough just being women they don’t need anything to make them valuable.

“It is sad that people see a lot of things that women do as common but when a man does this things it becomes extraordinary or exceptional; the women need to know that the world revolves because they are here,” he said.

On her part, Dr Chinyere Njoku, a Specialist Radiation and Clinical Oncologist in Asi Ukpo Hospital said they had to have the engagement to let women, especially those in the health sector know that they need a balanced mental health.

According to Njoku, health workers take care of patients, if they are not mentally stable that will reflect on how much care they give to the patients and how dedicated they are to their jobs.

The clinical oncologist also used the opportunity to appeal to women to identify mentors that can help them navigate the challenges of being  women in the society.

“People still say women have issues, they don’t like each other and are toxic, this is because the lives of many women are not balanced, any woman with a balanced life becomes lovable and is willing to lift other women.

Similarly, Dr. Otu Egbe, a Clinical Psychiatrist in the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar, called on the women to choose the kind of lives they want to live early,

He said the women need to choose to either be married or single and also  choose a career path that gives them fulfillment.

He added that though it was important to work, women should be able to balance things and know when to switch roles from being professional women to family women.

IWD 2025: Amnesty International draws attention to increasing rate of femicide in Nigeria

    By Kelvin Obambon

Amnesty International Nigeria (AIN) has used this year’s International Women’s Day celebration to draw attention to the increasing rate of femicide in the world and Nigeria in particular.

Commemorating the day in Calabar the Cross River State capital, on Saturday, AIN organized a walk themed “Accelerate Action Against Femicide.” The march took off from the University of Calabar Library to the female hostel in ‘Malabo’ and terminated at the Main Gate. It was aimed at raising awareness on femicide, domestic violence, and women’s rights.

Speaking during the event, Dr Blessing Ntamu, president of Springs of Life Association for Women and Girl Child Development Initiative, explained that femicide is an intentional killing of a woman motivated by gender. She revealed that in 2023 alone 85,000 women were killed, out of which 51,000 were killed by their intimate partners, meaning that in every 10 minutes a woman dies by femicide around the world. She said while femicide is increasing globally, a lot of cases, especially in Nigeria and Cross River State go unreported.

She averred that over 95 percent of women are killed because of their gender as opposed to 3 percent of men killed on the basis of gender. She declared that 1 in every 3 women has undergone one form of gender based violence or the other.

According to Ntamu, who is also the head of external and employment relations and partnerships, University of Calabar, femicide could be attributed to factors such as socio-cultural practices and family upbringing that promote patriarchal sentiment and
place preference on the male child. She pointed out that femicide is not a standalone event as it is an aspect of gender based violence.

She said the right time to take action against femicide “is now. Violence thrives when people keep silence. When you see something say something. Raise your sons to respect a woman. It is only weak men that raise their hands on women. We need to educate our male children. We have to dismantle all forms of discrimination against women. We have to say no to female genital mutilation. We have to say no to harmful cultural practices. We have to strive for equality. We need to do better. We need to make sure that the society goes in the right direction.”

Dr Ntamu called for strong legislation against femicide and all forms of gender based violence in the society, stating that punitive measures must be put in place to serve as deterrence. She equally harped on the need to strengthen and support institutions that are first line responders in femicide and gender based violence cases.

Also speaking, the Coordinator for Amnesty International Nigeria Supporters Group in Cross River State, Gabriel Rockwell, urged the males to support the females, stating that “they are our sisters, they are our mothers, they are our wives, girlfriends, nieces and cousins. We should step out and stop this menace that’s happening in our society.”

Rockwell said that AIN has been doing a lot of work over the years to prevent femicide and other forms of gender based violence.

“We have opened channels. We have conducted education campaigns, trainings, workshops, talk shows. We are the only one in Nigeria right now that have specifically picked out femicide and campaign against it. The global theme for the International Women’s Day is slightly different, but we at Amnesty we picked out femicide because it is on the rise,” he said.

On her part, Miss Nwawube Kosisochukwu, President of the Amnesty International Nigeria Human Rights Clinic in the University of Calabar, said “we have been constantly campaigning against femicide. In our own little way we have taken sensitization on femicide to males in the University community. We also go to secondary schools to spread this message. The issue of femicide didn’t just start with the men. It started from when they are growing up.”

The event brought together members of the university community, including the Female Law Students Forum, and the International Law Students Association.

Special Advisers Forum passes vote of confidence on Gov Otu, declares no vacancy in govt house in 2027

    By Kelvin Obambon

Cross River Special Advisers Forum has passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the state governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, declaring that come 2027 there is no vacancy in Peregrino.

The resolution was passed on Friday during a press briefing at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar, the state capital. Having carefully examined developmental projects across the three senatorial districts of the state, the Special Advisers scored the governor high and unanimously passed a clean bill of health on the administration.

Chairman of the Forum and Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, underscored the significance of the governor’s infrastructural development on the economy of the state. He stressed that the Adiabo-Ikoneto has been made accessible, adding “it takes a governor with a big heart to bring such development.”

Akiba emphasized that “governor Bassey Otu is remodeling Cross River in all facet. We were in a state where businesses had closed down. Investors were no more interested in Cross River, but as you can see today construction sites are booming. Governor Bassey Otu is an excellent leader; a transformational leader; a leader with difference. Integrity combined with humility. We don’t have that kind of asset in any governor in Nigeria. He’s accessible. He has listening ears and he is working without talking.”

He said that the governor’s influence extends beyond Cross River which is why the state is able to attract federal projects.

“In national politics he’s on the front. We have a governor who is the deputy chairman of the South South Governors’ Forum. Some people are coming to play local politics with federal interventions.

“To put the record straight, whatever project we are enjoying from federal government is because we have a governor that is influential at the center. We have a governor that draws the president’s attention to the issues that bother Cross River State,” Akiba said.

…State Government Advances Technological Innovation in Asset Management

    By Kingsley Agim

In a decisive effort to enhance transparency, accountability, and administrative efficiency, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has directed the digitalization of the state’s asset registry. This strategic initiative seeks to establish a comprehensive, technology-driven framework for the cataloging, auditing, and management of government-owned properties, thereby fortifying oversight mechanisms and mitigating systemic inefficiencies.

This directive aligns with the State Executive Council’s approval of a far-reaching audit and recovery process for public assets, underscoring the administration’s unwavering commitment to prudent governance, data-driven decision-making, and fiscal responsibility.

To facilitate the seamless execution of this initiative, key government officials—including Special Adviser on Asset Management and Recovery, Barr. Gilbert Agbor; Economic Adviser, Prof. Peter Oti; Accountant General, Dr. (Mrs.) Glory Effiong; and State Auditor General, Mrs. Anne Essessien—convened in Calabar for a high-level deliberation with representatives from Nugi Technologies Nigeria Limited, the firm tasked with developing and deploying the digital infrastructure.

The engagement was designed to harmonize expert insights, refine operational modalities, and integrate best practices, ensuring that the emerging digital asset registry is technologically robust, functionally dynamic, and optimally aligned with the state’s governance imperatives.

By embracing technological innovation and data-driven governance, Governor Otu’s administration is setting a precedent for fiscal discipline, institutional modernization, and sustainable development in Cross River State.

From Food on the Table to Skills-in-The-Hands: The Prince Otu Approach

    By Nathaniel Otaba

Over the last eight years, Cross River State witnessed an avalanche of appointments under Ayade’s administration, an initiative famously christened “Food on the Table.” This program enrolled hundreds of youths onto the state’s payroll, providing them with salaries for the duration of the administration.

Upon assuming office, Sen. Bassey Otu introduced a more sustainable and enduring initiative, the “Skills-in-the-Hands,” aimed at empowering young Cross Riverians to create wealth and achieve financial independence, elevating individuals to heights they never thought possible.

In a country where unemployment rates have reached unprecedented levels, leaving millions of graduates in uncertainty and susceptible to various crimes, including fraud, kidnapping and other serious offenses, the importance of empowering youths with skills and setting them up cannot be overstated. Equipping them for financial independence paves the way for economic freedom for countless unemployed youths across the nation.

Leveraging existing structures within the state, Governor Otu, in collaboration with the Nigerian Export Processing Zone Authority, mandated companies operating in the Calabar Export Processing Zone to train unemployed Cross Riverians and set them up in their respective fields of training.

Skyrun International has completed its first batch of training for 20 Cross Riverians, selected from all 18 local governments, focusing on the production of appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners. The participants have since been employed by Skyrun.

Facilitated by the Cross River State Ministry of Youth Development and Skill Acquisition, this training is a continuous program, and to ensure high-quality outcomes, the number of participants per batch was reduced to 20.

Just recently, the Cross River State government in collaboration with Skyrun International FZE inducted the second batch of trainees into the ‘Skills in the hands’ initiative.

Additionally, Lafarge has concluded a nine month training program for 22 Cross Riverians in fabrication and welding. They have been provided with the latest welding machines and will proceed to travel abroad for further training.

With the Bakassi Deep Seaport project underway, the potential for employment during and after construction is enormous. To ensure Cross Riverians benefit from these opportunities, plans are being concluded to send hundreds of youths abroad for various skill acquisition programs.

The goal of the “Skills-in-The-Hands” initiative is to ensure that every youth possesses at least two skills, regardless of their educational background. This approach serves as a replacement for “Food on the Table,” equipping young individuals with the means to earn a living.

Recently, 200 youths were sent to Goje, in Nasarawa State for an intensive two-week training program focused on production, processing, marketing, and branding within the agricultural value chain at one of Nigeria’s largest farms, CSS Farm. Each participant will be empowered to embark on their chosen agricultural value chain path. They were also provided with iPads containing comprehensive training materials and funding/marketing contacts for various agricultural enterprises. For instance, those interested in establishing poultry businesses can easily get contact information for suppliers of birds, feed, and  off-takers within their locality.

The Senator Otu-led administration has trained over 200 youths in POS business, empowering each participant with a POS system and a startup capital of ₦150,000. The beneficiaries can be sure of daily earnings and becoming financially independent.

In collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), 20 Cross Riverians have received training in welding and fabrication, along with full equipment to facilitate their post-training work.

The Skills in the hands initiative is also in collaboration with development partners with interest in Youth development, empowerment and entrepreneurship. They include UNICEF, USAID, UNFPA, UNIDO, UNDP, SMEDAN, Bank of Industry, Industrial Training Fund (ITF)

With a target of training 5,000 youths in various skills during his first term, Governor Otu is focused in empowering young people to create wealth, thereby reducing crime and youth restiveness in the state.
