  • Venezuelan cosplayer Jessi Reino slays as bewitching Revenant Kitana, sexy Skarlet and sexier Jade

It’s been really cool to see the love for fighting games on display all around the world, especially when it comes to creative ventures outside of the matches like artwork and cosplay.

Venezuelan cosplayer Jessi ‘Jessacosplay’ Reino has quite the portfolio of work for Mortal Kombat with her bewitching Revenant Kitana, sexy Skarlet and even sexier Jade.

In our time, we’ve probably seen like 1,000 Kitana cosplay in the past, but almost no one attempts to go the extra mile to try and pull off her undead versions.

That extra effort does not go unnoticed here with a really awesome take on the revenant empress’ design from Mortal Kombat 11.

For looking mostly homemade, Reino’s armor work appears pretty top notch in detail and what she was able to pull off.

She’s got the breastplate, shoulders, arm guards, shin guards and even shoes detailed and brought to life.

And it’s all brought together by her skull crown, fans and revenant makeup to look intimidating and enticing at the same time.

Instead of going for her latest incarnation, it seems like Jessi may like the Mortal Kombat 2011 version of Skarlet the best since that’s the incarnation she’s gone with for now.

And it definitely looks pretty darn great as well even if it is a technically more simple design than her complex Kitana.

That’s certainly not a bad thing though.

And last but not least we have Reino’s Jade too.

This one seems to be an even deeper cut than the rest with this cosplay looking the closest overall to Jade’s Mortal Kombat: Deception design though there are some distinct changes that make it stand out.

We just wish there was more of it.

This is far from the only MK cosplay Jessi has put together in the past, as she’s also transformed herself into multiple versions of Mileena that we previously covered too.

If you enjoyed these, there’s more great stuff to be found on Jessacosplay’s Instagram page.

  • Nintendo’s Switch successor release date will be September 24, 2024

The Nintendo Switch is a good six and a half years old, prompting many to understandably ask when the Switch 2, or whatever the successor will end up being, might be en route.

A very specific release date started circulating about the internet early on Friday as someone who appears to have insider information claims the new system will be dropping on September 24, 2024.

This comes from a Wccftech report as a Discord user named SoldierDelta (who accurately provided details and screen shots of Team NINJA’s next game, Rise of the Ronin, earlier this year) stated that Nintendo is aiming to release its next console on the aforementioned September 24, 2024 date.

SoldierDelta also shared that there will be two versions of said console, a standard as well as a digital-only model. According to the report, the standard model will run players a whopping $499 while the digital-only shaves off a hundred bucks at $400.

Nintendo has been tight-lipped on their next major endeavor, but the stars do seem to be aligning for a latter half of 2024 release.

Such was the messaging VGC received from inside sources, and Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has publicly stated that the company aims to continue to focus on the Switch until the end of the fiscal year (March 2024) implying that focus would shift as the Switch celebrates its seventh birthday.

We in the fighting game community have to wonder what potential this might mean for the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Though Super Smash Bros. Ultimate saw its last update quite some time ago, fans are still holding out for a possible sequel or Deluxe version, for which there are indeed a handful of intriguing bits of evidence.

For now, we speculate on rumors and alleged leaks like the one from SoldierDelta, and perhaps discuss in the comments below how likely you feel like the next Nintendo console will pop up in late 2024.

  • Kameo tier list reveals which assist characters are best and worst in Mortal Kombat 1

Cyrax is the best, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. But there are 14 other characters you can pair your Mortal Kombat 1 main fighter with to enhance their battle abilities whether that be for initiating offense, extending combos, or getting out of sticky situations.

Rooflemonger has been exploring MK1 extensively and has put together a full tier list ordering each and every one of the Kameo characters. He takes time to articulate why each character ranks where they do, and if you want a better understanding of Mortal Kombat 1 and its all-important Kameo mechanic, Roof’s video is a must.

Roof spreads the Kameo cast among six different tiers including S+, S, A+, A, B, and C. He specifically notes that he doesn’t feel like any particular Kameo is awful (save for maybe the one in C tier) but that some just have obvious advantages and utility over others.

Three of these categories actually house only one character each, while the majority are all lumped into either A+ or A tier. This kind of approach speaks to the notable standouts and perhaps helps identify where developers may need to tweak things in the future.

If you’d like to see the final product you can simply click the thumbnail here. You’ll want to hear Rooflemonger’s reasonings behind each of his placements, however, and to get that you’ll need to watch through the full video, which is embedded below.

Please share your thoughts on Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo tiers in the comments once you’ve had a chance to check out this list. Whom are you using these days? Is there some undiscovered juice in one of the perceived lower tiers?

  • Evo 2023 finalist gets heat as he shares new Guilty Gear Strive season 3 tier list

With first place finishes at countless weeklies, a handful of high profile majors, and a silver medal run at Evo 2023, ONi|NBNHMR is one of the best Guilty Gear Strive players around these days.

The game is a little over a month into its third season of competitive play, which means updated tier lists are popping up as players scramble to figure out which characters fare the best after the late August patch. NBNHMR recently rolled out his ordered tier list via live stream, and noted that this was “probably the most I’ve ever been flamed for a tier list on stream,” while sharing the end result on social media.

One of the first questions to ask is how Strive’s newest DLC character, Johnny, performs relative to his fellow roster mates. According to NBNHMR, Johnny doesn’t do all that well as he places just outside of the bottom five.

The competitive player organizes Strive’s 25 fighters across four different tiers including S, A, B, and C. There’s only one character, however, in that fourth and final tier category, and that’s the commonly cosplayed Testament.

Strive had some major gameplay alterations in the latest patch as the all important Burst Gauge mechanic was very much altered and added to.

What’s more, the Deflect Shield mechanic presents new ways for players to go about defending, and so the potential for certain fighters to move significantly in terms of tier rankings is definitely there.

There are eight characters in each of the other tier categories, NBNHMR’s main, Nagoriyuki, placing just below S tier at ninth overall. This was surely one of the more contested placements as Nagoriyuki has been tearing through Strive for some time now with his immensely high risk and reward design.

You can see the full list simply by clicking the thumbnail here. As always, we’d love to hear your feedback on what you think of NBNHMR’s placings in the comments.

Do you disagree with him as much as his stream did, or do you think he’s got a strong understanding of where the game is currently at?

  • Sub-Zero and Smoke from Mortal Kombat 1 face off in a live action short film

Mortal Kombat 1 sports an impressive roster in which both Sub-Zero and Smoke are part of. Towards the end of Mortal Kombat 1’s main story mode, Sub-Zero and the Lin Kuei betrayed Scorpion and Smoke, leading them to found the Shirai Ryu.

In a video uploaded by Hidden Characters, Sub-Zero and Smoke end up facing off in a live action sequence. Sub-Zero is played by Johnny Junkers while Smoke is played by Yuto Akaboshi. Editing of the video was handled by D-Piddy.

Upon confronting one another, the two begin a match just like how it’s done in Mortal Kombat 1. Though there’s no intro dialogue, this fight begins with both fighters squaring each other up before Sub-Zero kicks Smoke away.

You can really tell that Sub-Zero is the aggressor in this fight as he doesn’t appear to be holding back. Still, Smoke is able to use his teleportation to land a few blows on Sub-Zero and escape from desperate situations.

Despite the Mortal Kombat series being known for its Fatalities and Brutalities, there actually isn’t any gore in the video. It ends up mostly just being a brawl between Sub-Zero and Smoke.

  • Nemo releases his Street Fighter 6 A.K.I. match up chart

WRZT|Nemo is one of the top ranked Street Fighter 6 A.K.I. players in the world. At the time of writing this, he is the #3 ranked A.K.I. overall with nearly 94,000 League Points.

Earlier this week, we saw Nemo’s full Street Fighter 6 tier list that not only rated A.K.I. for the first time since her launch, but also surprisingly placed her as one of the bottom two characters in the game. Now, Nemo released an A.K.I. match up chart that further explains why he initially placed her so low on his tier list.

Nemo dropped a few notes about his A.K.I. match up chart that we have deciphered through Google Translate. Essentially, he says that he feels the newcomer struggles against a character like Lily due to her ability to charge forward with her wind buffed Condor Spire.

He also notes that A.K.I. struggles against characters like Ken and Luke, who have strong normal attacks and fast rush down. In addition to this, Guile also gives A.K.I. trouble thanks to his strong fireball game.

From the looks and sound of it, Nemo feels A.K.I. loses quite a lot to most of the cast. On his match up chart, we see that he feels she has mostly disadvantaged match ups, with only two being either even or favorable for her.

Out of the full roster, Nemo feels that A.K.I. only wins against Dhalsim. Having played that match up myself, I imagine he feels this way because A.K.I. can slide in and close the gap very quickly whenever he goes airborne and tries to set up fireball pressure.

Moving down the list, Nemo has A.K.I. going 5-5 against Jamie. The drunken boxing-style fighter is often considered to be the worst in the entire game, so seeing that she is even against him is certainly interesting.

A lot of fans have been complaining about JP’s strength since shortly after the game launched, and in A.K.I.’s gameplay trailer Capcom used JP as the opponent to show how well A.K.I. can maneuver around his zoning — which lead folks to believe that she might be strong against the top tier character. Nemo doesn’t quite agree as he places the match up at 5.5 – 4.5 in JP’s favor.

The rest of the match ups see A.K.I. losing at least 4-6, with six whole match ups being 2-8 in the other character’s favor — according to Nemo. That’s a pretty extreme take as 8-2 match ups aren’t very common and typically mean the match up is EXTREMELY bad and almost unwinnable.

You can check out Nemo’s full Street Fighter 6 A.K.I. match up chart below.

  • Bandai Namco releases official move listings for Feng, Azucena, and Raven in Tekken 8 ahead of upcoming closed beta

Bandai Namco is gearing up for another closed beta test for their upcoming 3D fighting title, Tekken 8. On October 20, those who are lucky enough to be selected will be given an opportunity to try out the next installment in the long-running fighting game franchise ahead of its launch next year.

In order to better prepare players for the beta experience, Bandai Namco has released official move listings for the three new contenders joining the fight in the upcoming test. Feng, Azucena, and Raven’s move lists are now available for viewing, and while they don’t include every move these warriors have, they do drill down to the key maneuvers for each character.

The Tekken 8 closed beta test will give players the ability to choose between 19 different playable characters. Added to the 16 of the previous beta test are the aforementioned Feng, Azucena, and Raven.

Providing players with core moves and combos to get started, these move listings include maneuvers such as Heat Engager moves, the inputs for their Heat Smash, how to perform their Rage Arts, and more. Additionally, we get a sample combo per character to help get you started.

On top of the inputs for these moves, each move list also provides details on what each character’s unique effects for the Heat System are. Feng, for example, gains access to the following moves when Heat is active: Essence of Iron Palm, Essence of Nian Zhang Mie Ba, and Yinglong Sea Splitter.

Bandai Namco has also included character descriptions that detail what each fighter’s motivations and story are in Tekken 8. We know Azucena is the “Coffee Queen” and is the only daughter of the family that owns the Ortiz Farm, but did you also know that she is an MMA champion?

The Tekken 8 closed beta test is set to kick off on October 20, 2023 at 1 a.m. PDT and will run until October 23, 2023 at 12 a.m. PDT. Sign ups close on October 11 at 12 a.m. PDT.

If you managed to get into the initial closed network test for Tekken 8, you will automatically be entered into the upcoming closed beta. Those who played the closed network test on PlayStation 5 can already preload the beta update right now, and Xbox Series X|S and Steam users will be able to do the same on October 10.

  • Why A.K.I. might be the worst character in Street Fighter 6

While there’s been a ton of hype surrounding the lead up to A.K.I.’s Street Fighter 6 debut, it seems those who’ve been trying to “fix” her might have to do so in more than one way. Though we’ve had her for less than two weeks at this point, the poisonous evolution from Street Fighter 5’s F.A.N.G is widely being deemed low tier.

That might be a big problem for Capcom seeing as A.K.I. is a DLC character that players will have to fork over extra cash to use, and peppering in the fact that she may be the most difficult character in the game to use makes us a tad worried she’ll wind up dropping off after the initial excitement subsides. A recent new video from JM Crofts puts this whole concept under the microscope.

A handful of Japanese pros have already deemed her to be one of the absolute worst in the game. We’ve seen the tier lists from both WRZT|Nemo as well as a combined effort from Sako, Moke, Nuki, Uryo, Santarou, Kishiri, and Go1 where the former places her second to last and the latter sees her as the matter of fact worst.

It is still early, of course, and things will surely evolve as players learn more and more about what A.K.I. has to offer, but why is she coming across as so especially difficult to win with?

When it comes to offense, A.K.I. has a lot of useful and creative tools, which is key if you want to thrive in the Street Fighter 6 meta. Her movements are deceptive and slippery, and her unique ability to poison foes for damage over time adds an interesting element to the fight.

Her poison also leads to essentially what we saw from Gill’s Retribution mechanic back in Street Fighter 5, where landing certain attacks while an opponent is debuffed leads to either better combos or more advantageous knock down situations. Herein lies a first major hurdle as this added potential requires a good bit more time players will have to spend getting used to the character.

Not only do you have to learn her standard combos, but you also have to learn the evolved versions of said combos should you land them while your opposition is poisoned. This is in large part what makes A.K.I. a contender for being the most technical character in the game, and might scare off players from sticking with her longer term.

While her offense is somewhat double-edged, her defense is clearly among the worst on the roster. She lacks an invincible “get off me” move, and her slithery escape maneuver can be thrown, so if and when she’s cornered and attacked, it’s especially hard for her to recover.

Perhaps above all that’s been mentioned thus far is the fact that A.K.I.’s Drive Rush options are relatively lackluster compared to top tier characters. It’s no secret that Drive Rush is a bit of a make or break mechanic in SF6, so to be lacking in this particular category really hurts a character.

JM Crofts take a closer look at all of A.K.I.’s attributes in the full video below. He goes into more depth on the items we’ve covered here, plus has a few other important gameplay characteristics to highlight. Give the video a watch and let us know in the comments if you’re playing A.K.I. and whether or not you think she’s a relatively bad character.
