  • Loki Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: Breaking Brad

Loki Season 2 Episode 2 is here, and as I predicted in my previous article, In this episode Loki and Mobius go out in search of Sylvie. This episode majorly revolves around the reunion of Loki and Sylvie. Also, Mobus and Ouroborus interrogate Hunter X-5 in this episode in a rather funny manner. But, X-5 has gone rogue and become a movie star named Brad Wolfe. This name itself is a big easter egg, how? We have explained it all in our dedicated article on Brad Wolfe. Eventually, Brad spills where Sylvie is and all three of them go to find her.

Even though Sylvie shows as if she hates Loki for not siding with her when she wanted to kill “He Who Remains” but still has a soft spot for him. The TVA is visibly falling apart with the uncontrollable disruption of the Temporal Loom and Ouroborus is shown trying really hard to fix things. However, there’s a problem, O.B. cannot access the blast doors to go up to the Temporal Loom as Mobius did in Episode 1. Want to know why? Well, read on to find out!

Why Ouroboros Cannot Access the Temporal Loom?

    Temporal Loom
    Source: Disney+

In Loki Season 2 Episode 2, Ouroborus sees that the Temporal Loom is not going to hold itself together for a very long time now. He creates a device that might be able to help make it stable once again and tries to access the Temporal Loom. However, he could not open the blast doors as the systems of the TVA have a failsafe.

When the Temporal Loom is highly disrupted, only its creator can access it, i.e. He Who Remains. Although Miss Minutes has the capability of bypassing this security, she has gone rogue along with Renslayer. Now what’s left to see is, if our genius technician, Ouroubours can find a way to stabilize the timeline or not in future episodes.

    What was General Dox’s Mission?

    General Dox
    Source: Disney+ Hotstar

Almost all of TVA has accepted the fact that they should stop pruning timelines, except for a small fraction of hunters under the leadership of General Dox. She raided the armory of TVA, collected all the weapons and time charges, and marched out with her loyalists to prune as many timelines as she could at once.

Loki, Sylvie, and Mobius made it to her base just in time and fought all her loyalists, putting a stop to her mission but maybe they were too late. Back at the TVA in the timeline monitor, they could see the timelines being destroyed and a large number of branches falling apart.

What General Dox did was kill millions of people, even though she thought she was doing the right thing. She turned out to be one of the biggest Loki villains in this series. Considering this series is only two episodes in, I wonder what else are we going to witness in the future.

Is Miss Minutes Good or Evil?

    Miss Minutes

In Loki Season 2, it seems Miss Minutes is going to play a significant role. I can tell this considering the buildup around this character. Miss Minutes, for those unaware, is a holographic AI that has gone rogue along with Judge Renslayer. Moreover, right now, TVA really needs Miss Minutes to help them out, especially OB, to access the blast door to the Temporal Loom and fix things.

See, we can’t really call her evil because she is at the end of the day, an AI. She is programmed to be loyal to He Who Remains and his partner, Renslayer. As of now, all I can say is that she is going to cause trouble for Loki and his friends in the upcoming episodes.

What Is Going to Happen in Loki Season 2 Episode 3?

Considering how Loki Season 2 Episode 2 ended, I am pretty sure the next episode will revolve around Renslayer. In the final few minutes of the episode, we see that TVA clerk Casey traced Reneslayer. Since he located her, Mobius and Loki might go out to find Renslayer in the next episode. We might also witness Miss Minutes back on screen but as an angry, bloodthirsty AI.

The next episode will most probably delve deeper into Loki and Sylvie’s relationship. We might even get to see Mobius finally ride a Jet Ski as his life before TVA was in question this time. The possibilities are endless. But the one thing I’m most certain about is Mobius and Loki going after Renslayer in Loki Season 2 Episode 3. What turn will the story take according to you? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Hands-On with Temperature Sensor on Pixel 8 Pro: Is It Accurate?

The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro landed a few days ago, and it brings some major upgrades, including the new Tensor G3 chipset, new AI photography features, and more. While watching the event, when Google revealed that there was a temperature sensor baked into the camera module of the Pixel 8 Pro, I couldn’t help but let out a “Why?” I mean, I understand the idea of a temperature sensor being cool and all, but is it even useful in 2023? Most importantly, is it merely a gimmick or actually a sensor that works reliably? To find the answer to these questions and more, I tested the new temperature sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro.

How Does the Temperature Sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro Work?

First things first, the Google Pixel 8 Pro is the only device that features the brand new Temperature sensor. The non-Pro variant misses out on this. When I first received the review device, the sensor was just a dud as the phone did not come with a dedicated app to use it right out of the box.

It was not until very recently that the Pixel Thermometer app (Free) was listed on the Play Store with a mere file size of 4.55MB. I installed it as soon as I learned of it and annoyed the heck out of everyone, pointing my camera at them and taking the temperature of whatever was in sight. I looked like an absolute madman. By the way, you will need to place the phone within 5cm or 2 inches of the surface you are measuring for the “best results.”

As for the Pixel Thermometer app, there are 11 different material options that you can choose from. This also includes a Default mode which you can use if you don’t want to think too much about having to manually select a material. Once you select the mode, all you have to do is point at a surface, hit the “Tap to measure” button, and the sensor will instantly give you a reading.

Hands-On with Temperature Sensor on Pixel 8 Pro: Is It Accurate?

I know what you are thinking, does the new temperature sensor let you measure human body temperature? Even though Google has yet to get FDA approval for adding a body temperature mode in the thermometer app, can we still trick the sensor into getting a reading? I let my intrusive thoughts win and obviously had to test it out. Let’s check out my observations.

Thermal Gun vs Pixel 8 Pro Temperature Sensor

Hands-On with Temperature Sensor on Pixel 8 Pro: Is It Accurate?

We have a thermal gun here at the Beebom office and it came to me; there was no better way to put the thermometer sensor’s accuracy to the test. So, here are the results, spanning across multiple objects using different materials:

Note: All the tests were done in an AC environment with an average room temperature of roughly 25°C. Also, the tests were carried out using the Pixel 8 Pro temperature sensor app’s Default Mode since it turned out to be the most reliable.

Objects Thermal Gun Reading (In Celsius) Pixel 8 Pro Temperature Sensor Reading (In Celsius)
    A Glass of Cold Water 8.8°C 9.4°C
A Cup of Hot Water (Ceramic) 75°C 75°C
    Metal Rod 27.4°C 28.1°C
    Glass Window 23.9°C 24.8°C
    Wall 27.7°C 27.4°C
    Active Monitor Display 31.2°C 32.2°C
    Running GPU Temperature 44.4°C 45.1°C
    Gaming Laptop’s Keyboard 42.9°C 42.2°C
    Metal Bottle 25°C 24°C
    Small Desk Fan 21°C 22.6°C
    Wooden Desk 24.7°C 24.7°C
    150W Laptop Charger During Usage 43.2°C 44°C
    Leather Bag 24.2°C 24.6°C
    Plastic Bottle 23.5°C 24.9°C
    Thick Microfibre Cloth 25°C 25.6°C
    Pebble 24.8°C 25.1°C
    Silicon Mobile Case 24.8°C 25°C
    Rubber Crocs 24.8°C 24.7°C

If you take a look at this list, you will see how close the readings are, so the temperature sensor seems pretty accurate. In fact, in my testing, I found that the Pixel 8 Pro’s temperature sensor gave me a reading instantly while the thermal gun reading fluctuated a bit before settling. Moreover, I noticed that there was something off with the “Shiny Metal” material mode in the Pixel Thermometer app. The default mode gave the most accurate readings, and I decided to carry out all these tests in that mode for that very reason.

Does Pixel 8 Pro Temperature Sensor Work on Humans?

Hands-On with Temperature Sensor on Pixel 8 Pro: Is It Accurate?

Though Pixel hasn’t yet gotten FDA approval to use the temperature sensor for “medical purposes.” However, can we still trick the Pixel 8 Pro sensor into getting a human body temperature reading? Yeah, don’t worry, I have tested it out on multiple people, and I even have the readings. I was pretty surprised with the results. Take a look yourself:

Subject Thermal Gun Reading (In Celsius) Pixel 8 Pro Temperature Sensor Reading (In Celsius)
    Person A 33.3°C 33.7°C
    Person B 35.1°C 35.2°C
    Person C 34°C 33.9°C

As mentioned in our YouTube video, the feature is not approved for medical purposes just yet, so we suggest you use a thermometer for accurate readings and consult a doctor when required.

Pixel 8 Pro: Is Temperature Sensor a Gimmick?

Going by these results, there is absolutely no doubt that the temperature sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro is highly accurate and reliable. However, I honestly feel that it is a tad too late for a temperature sensor on a phone now. There are many things at play here. There is a good chance that Google designed the Pixel 8 Pro at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak and thought it was crucial for the temperature sensor to see the light of day.

That is something that makes a lot more sense, given the fact that the pandemic has died down at this point. However, maybe the device was in its final stage and Google had to roll with the sensor by then. Moreover, if that was not the case, I don’t get why Google would have opted to go through the hassle of approvals for the sensor. But in 2023, it is nothing more than a gimmick; one that no one will use after a few tries.

Hands-On with Temperature Sensor on Pixel 8 Pro: Is It Accurate?

So, should you get the Pixel 8 Pro at $999 just for the temperature sensor? Absolutely not. I mean, how often did users use the Galaxy S8’s heartbeat sensor? Or, let’s say the Nothing Phone’s Glyph interface, for that matter? This is just another one of those features that you will forget even exists on your smartphone. However, what makes the Pixel 8 Pro worth it are its formidable cameras, Pro Mode in the camera app, and a whole bunch of AI features that take mobile photography to the next level. Then again, that’s my perspective. Let me know what you think of the Pixel 8 Pro’s temperature sensor in the comments below.

  • Google Pixel 8 Pro Tops Display Rankings

Last week, Google debuted the Pixel 8 series with style. Powered by the new Tensor G3 chipset, the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 bring many improvements. With the new devices, Google introduced the Actua display, which has just achieved the best display title in a new ranking.

To be exact, the Google Pixel 8 Pro with Super Actua display now has the #1 spot in DXOMARK’s display rankings. The regular Pixel 8, with the Actua display, achieves a similar score on the ranking. That means you will be set to get an enhanced viewing experience regardless of which device you pick from the series.

How Does DXOMARK Scores the Smartphone Displays

Similar to other devices tested by DXOMARK, the outlet put the Google Pixel 8 up against six different criteria. And if you were to get a better idea about the DXOMARK’s ranking, you need to have a fair idea about each of these criteria.

Among the criteria, there’s readability. This test determines how easy and comfortable it is to read the content on the screen under different real-life conditions. Then, the outlet tests the color production capability. It determines the capacity of the smartphones to accurately reproduce colors.

    Google Pixel 8 Pro Screen

Next, the test includes a video test. This test evaluates how the smartphones handle the standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR10) videos. Then, there’s the motion test. It sees how well the phones handle dynamic content. Also, the phones go through a touch test, where DXOMARK determines the accuracy, smoothness, and response time.

Lastly, smartphones need to pass the artifacts test. Here, the outlet checks the display’s performance, motion flaws, and image rendering capabilities. It also measures the reflectance and the presence of flicker. And Google Pixel 8 phones passed through all of these criteria with flying colors.

A Closer Look at the Display Score of Google Pixel 8

Among all the criteria, the Google Pixel 8 phones got high scores in every one of them. The lowest score for the devices is in the artifact category, which is at 122. The top-rated phone in the artifact category is the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, which achieves a score of 161.

    Google Pixel 8 Display Ranking

    Gizchina News of the week

However, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 fails to beat the Google Pixel 8 devices in terms of color and readability. To be precise, the new Google phones achieved 162 and 164 points in each of those criteria.

Google Pixel 8 Pro Display Ranking

Even though both the Google Pixel 8 devices got impressive scores, the spotlight is on the Pixel 8 Pro. DXOMARK points out that the Pro features a remarkable brightness of 2100 nits at a 20% average picture level. It outperformed the iPhone 15 Pro Max in different conditions, which includes direct sunlight.

Moreover, DXOMARK says that the Google Pixel 8 Pro can better handle the brightness in low-light settings. It even excels in offering accurate and vibrant color rendering, which greatly enhances the viewing experience.

    Current Display Ranking

For those wondering, the leaderboard of DXOMARK’s display category currently has the Google Pixel 8 devices and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 at the top two positions. Google’s latest phones got an overall score of 154, while the Z Fold 5 achieved an overall score of 152.

    Current Display Ranking

In terms of order, the Google Pixel 8 devices have the 1st and 2nd position, while the Z Fold 5 bears the 3rd. These devices are followed by the Google Pixel Fold and Honor Magic5 Pro. These two devices got an overall score of 151, positioning them in 4th and 5th on the leaderboard.

The recently released iPhone 15 Pro Max holds the 6th position with an overall score of 149. It shares the same overall score with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and Galaxy Z Filp5.

  • Latest Street Fighter 6 patch included unlisted quality of life change regarding button inputs

Capcom noted on X (formerly Twitter) Thursday evening that they hadn’t quite shared everything when it came to Street Fighter 6’s most recent update patch as a new quality of life feature apparently missed the patch notes.

Said feature surrounds the option to turn off and on button release inputs from the character select screen. This is commonly referred to as “negative edge,” and can greatly affect gameplay depending on an individual player’s style and approach.

    The statement reads as follows:

“With the recent Street Fighter 6 update, it is now possible to change the ‘button release input on/off’ in the controller settings on the character select screen. With this change, we have made an update to the Capcom Pro Tour 2023 Official Rules. In the case of offline tournaments, players can set ‘Release Input ON or OFF’ for each match as well as the button settings.”

When this option is turned on, players will get inputs when pressing as well as when releasing buttons. When the option is turned off, however, players will only get inputs when pressing buttons.

The use of negative edge (or the preference to have it on or off) is fully personal as it’s very much a tournament legal option to have on. Those who don’t traditionally use it, however, can very much be annoyed and experience unexpected inputs when it’s on.

Especially in the case of offline tournaments, where many different players may use the same set up multiple times in a day, it’s not uncommon for such preferences to be unknowingly altered. The fact that Capcom is adding this option directly to the character select screen implies a quality of life upgrade as it will be much more accessible moving forward.

    Here’s the post from X:

Button inputs have been the center for much contention in Street Fighter 6 since its release back in June, and while negative edge does not seem to be at the core of most issues players have been experiencing, giving users as much freedom as possible (especially in this particular arena) is important.

For more on the particular input issues surrounding Street Fighter 6 check out the recent Talk and Block discussion below:

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max takes top spot in DXOMARK selfie ranking

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is taking the selfie game to a whole new level, surpassing not only its predecessors but also every competitor out there. DxOMark’s latest assessment leaves no room for doubt – this phone’s front-facing camera is in a league of its own.

In our iPhone 15 Pro Max review, DXOMARK’s in-depth analysis of the selfie camera reveals the striking superiority of this device. While sharing many similarities with its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max – such as a 12-megapixel front camera with an f/1.9 aperture, a 1/3.6-inch sensor, autofocus, and optical stabilization – the iPhone 15 Pro Max outshines them all.

iPhone 15 Pro Max is the new DxOMark Selfie Champion

The secret behind this marvel lies in the Apple A17 Pro’s image signal processor (ISP). This chip optimizes image processing, delivering exceptional visual quality. It’s the magic wand that makes the iPhone 15 Pro Max stand out.

    Gizchina News of the week

With a score of 149 points from DxOMark, the 15 Pro Max takes its rightful place at the pinnacle of the smartphone camera hierarchy. It offers impeccable exposure, swift and precise autofocus, a wide dynamic range, and outstanding detail reproduction in well-lit conditions. Plus, its video stabilization ensures steady footage, even on the move.

But, as with any piece of technology, there are some caveats to consider. Despite its small sensor size, which enhances depth of field, it can introduce visible noise, even in ideal lighting conditions. Color inaccuracies and fluctuations in sharpness may also crop up in videos.

Moreover, in portrait mode, the Face ID plugin delivers an accurate depth calculation, creating a natural background blur effect. However, it faces challenges when rendering intricate details like hair, making the effect appear somewhat artificial when scrutinized closely.

In sum, the 15 Pro Max is a great for selfies, offering an extraordinary selfie experience with minor imperfections. Its cutting-edge technology propels it to the forefront of the selfie camera competition, leaving the rest of the pack behind. Get ready to take your selfie game to new heights with this exceptional device.

    Pros

    • Accurate exposure and wide dynamic range for photos and videos
    • Reliable and fast autofocus with a wide depth of field
    • High levels of detail in bright light for photos and videos
    • Effective stabilization when holding the device still and when moving while recording
    • Very accurate subject isolation in bokeh mode

    Cons

    • Noise across all shooting conditions
    • Occasional color quantization artifacts in photos and videos

  • Full story of Sagat leading into Street Fighter 6

The original boss of the Street Fighter franchise is often and understandably cited as SF2’s M. Bison, but the final and frustratingly overpowered challenge of the very first Street Fighter game was none other than The Emperor of Muay Thai: Sagat.

Sagat’s history is an especially interesting one as he wrestles with relatable inner demons that Capcom expertly depicts through clever symbolism, and the fact that he’s a towering and battle-torn badass surely helps add to the charisma factor.

Though he started his career as a main antagonist, Sagat would actually go through more of a character arc than most other SF characters. He was demoted to sub-boss status in Street Fighter 2 and evolved further during Street Fighter Alpha from being an all out baddie to showing early signs of perhaps becoming one of the good guys.

Sagat, who is also often referred to simply as “The King,” was a natural fighter from youth as he would constantly get into brawls out in the streets of Thailand, but with no real direction or understanding these brawls would leave him bloodied, battered, and eventually with a weakened right eye.

Said eye injury caused a young Sagat to realize this chaotic approach to fighting wasn’t working, and so he decided to hone his aggression through the practice of Muay Thai. Growing through his early lessons and into a seven and a half foot tall behemoth, Sagat became a world champion at the tender age of 15.

One year later during his annual title defense, Sagat was challenged by a masked fighter who refused to offer his name. The two fought, and upon realizing Sagat’s eye was a weak point, this fighter pinpointed all his attacks right at it, eventually gouging it out completely.

This enraged 16 year old Sagat, who would give into his immediate anger and proceed to summon a power from deep within to launch his very first Tiger Shot projectile, killing his masked opponent, who by the way would up being Go Hibiki, father of Dan.

Though Sagat was the world champion, the title of “Emperor of Muay Thai” belonged to a man named Nuakan, whom Sagat would later defeat and thus garner his title. An onlooking Adon is inspired by this and asks to become Sagat’s pupil. All of that takes place before we ever see Sagat in a game, and thus brings us to the events of Street Fighter 1.

The character is rife with symbolism and themes as the ability to see and perceive is so important that many cultures throughout history have made vision a prominent thematic element of many different gods. Indeed, things don’t tend to go well for Sagat when he restricts his focus and fails to see the big picture.

His very first injury came about because he was simply brawling without much purpose or direction, his second major injury was also to his eye as his foe identified what you might call a blind spot, and capitalized on it. Things get worse for him when he later loses to Ryu and gets his second physical reminder (his trademark chest scar) of his lacking ability to pay balanced attention to all aspects of the fight.

Sagat figuratively lacks vision, and becomes blinded literally as a result. He slowly but surely begins to see the full picture thanks to his encounters with Ryu, whose name and Shoryuken technique are representative of the Dragon. In East Asian culture the Dragon and the Tiger are often juxtaposed as dualistic rivals.

Where the Dragon represents the heavens, the spirit, Eastern culture, and the Yang, the Tiger represents earth, physical matter, the West, and the Yin. Sagat’s exposure to and ongoing dialogue with Ryu broadens his horizons and widens his vision, (recall how he even develops one of his iconic moves after being inspired by Ryu’s uppercut) thus turning him into a more actualized and balanced version of himself.

Hear his full story thus far from before SF1 all the way up through Street Fighter 5 in the full video below. Do you hope to see Sagat pop up as DLC in Street Fighter 6? Chime into the comments with your thoughts on the matter, as well as on the character and his story.

  • EU urges Big Tech to check Middle East conflict-related content

EU industry chief, Thierry Breton has expressed worry about the series of “fake news” on the X platform with regards to the recent conflict in the Middle East. On Tuesday, he told Elon Musk to tackle such information on his platform. In the wake of the recent violence in the Middle East, Breton said X was being used to post illegal content and false news.

European Union EU antitrust regulators terrorist content

The European Union (EU) has urged big tech companies to take action against terrorist content. This is coming after the recent Hamas attack on Israel. The EU has warned that companies must remove illegal content from their platforms. It warns that if they do not remove these contents, they will face severe legal penalties. Fake news on the conflict has surged since the attack. This includes fake images and false videos, alongside images of graphic violence.

A European Commission (EC) spokesperson told Reuters

“Content circulating online that can be associated to Hamas qualifies as terrorist content is illegal, and needs to be removed under both the DSA (Digital Services Act) and TCO (Terrorist Content Online) Regulation,”

EU’s executive branch, the EC, has reminded all social media brands of their obligation within the region. The EC says they are legally required to prevent the spread of harmful content related to Hamas. The EU has issued warnings to big tech CEOs, including Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. These big tech CEOs will have to ensure strict compliance with European law. In his letters to Musk and Zuckerberg, EU industry chief, Thierry Breton said their brands had 24 hours to inform the EU how they were stopping harmful content on their platforms.

    Gizchina News of the week

    Digital Services Act

The EU’s newly enacted Digital Services Act holds companies responsible for monitoring and removing illegal content like terrorist content or illegal hate speech. Failure to comply with the European regulations around illegal content could result in fines worth 6% of a company’s annual revenue. Meta is responsible for monitoring misinformation and illegal content under the EU’s Digital Services Act, and Breton asked Zuckerberg to respond within 24 hours.

    The EU’s Special Operations Center

The EU has created a special operations centre staffed with experts. This includes fluent Hebrew and Arabic speakers. The aim of this centre is to closely monitor and respond to the rapidly evolving situation. The EU has warned that social media firms have seen a surge in fake news related to the conflict. To this end, these brands must do all they can to ensure that the fake news does not persist on their platforms.

    The EC spokesperson also said

“The Commission will fully apply the DSA and monitor the full implementation of the TCO. The Commission urges online platforms to fully comply with EU rules.”

The recently enacted DSA mandates big online brands, like X and Meta’s Facebook, to delete illegal content. These brands should also take steps to address threats to public safety and civic dialogue. Any company found in violation of the DSA faces a punishment of up to 6% of global turnover. Also, repeat violators may be barred from operating in Europe entirely. It is unknown whether Breton issued similar communications to other social media companies named in the DSA.

    Conclusion

The EU has urged big tech companies to take action against terrorist content after the recent Hamas attack on Israel. The EU has warned that companies must remove illegal content from their platforms or face severe legal penalties. It reminds all social media companies that they have a legal responsibility. This is to prevent the spread of harmful content with links to Hamas. The EU’s newly enacted Digital Services Act holds companies responsible for monitoring and removing illegal content like terrorist content or illegal hate speech.
