  • MediaTek Announces Dimensity 9300 – Big Performance Boost

    Last month, Qualcomm raised the Android flagship game by launching the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. And Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro became the first-ever devices to feature the chipset. As these two phones showcased, the 8 Gen 3 offers some great improvements over the predecessor. Well, now, MediaTek is about to enter the arena with Dimensity 9300.

    The Taiwanese company has announced the MediaTek Dimensity 9300. It is based on a 4nm+ process. To compare, the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 was based on the 4nm process. This shift to a better process should lead to better performance. And as MediaTek announced, that’s exactly what happened.

    MediaTek Dimensity 9300 CPU Configuration Explained

    One of the biggest standouts of the Dimensity 9300 is that it comes with four Arm Cortex-X4 cores. To compare, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 features only one. Alongside the four Cortex-X4 cores, the chipset features four performance Cortex-A720 cores.

    This configuration makes the new Dimensity 9300 CPU offer eight performance-focused cores. The predecessor had the same core count. But the Dimensity 9200 debuted with one Cortex-X3 core. It paired that with three performance Cortex-A715 cores and four efficiency Cortex-A510 cores.

    The noticeable difference in the Dimensity 9300 CPU config is that it doesn’t have any efficiency-focused Cortex-A5XX cores. Both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the Google Tensor G3 come with these cores to deliver better battery life.

    So, Does This Mean the New MediaTek Chipset Will Offer Poor Battery Life?

    The Dimensity 9300 CPU has no energy-efficient cores. But it doesn’t mean the chipset will deliver poor battery performance. To better understand, you need to dig into the Arm’s announcement on the Cortex-A720 cores. The Cortex-A520, which is inside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, has lower power requirements. But it also offers lower performance.

    On the other hand, the Cortex-A720, which the Dimensity 9300 has four of, offers better performance. But it consumes less power in its low-power state than the Cortex-A520 when it’s running at its max-power state. This means that the A720 cores running in their low-power state are more efficient.

    Finbar Moynihan from MediaTek explains this core configuration of Dimensity 9300 further. He notes that using more powerful cores could be more efficient. It allows the CPU to get the job done fast and then power things down. Google has also provided a similar explanation for utilizing two Cortex-X1 cores for past chips.

    But with the Tensor G3, Google shifted to a more conventional single-layer core approach. But MediaTek backs its claims with numbers. The Dimensity 9300 consumes 10 to 15 percent less power while running typical tasks and more resource-demanding applications.

    The Dimensity 9300 Still Has A Three-tier CPU Configuration

    While there are only Corte-X4 and A-720 cores inside the Dimensity 9300, it still has a three-tier config. It achieves this by running one of the Cortex-X4 cores at up to 3.2 GHz. The other three X4 cores run at 2.85 GHz. But even though the clock speed is low, all four cores have the same cache.

    The other four Cortex-A720 cores of the Dimensity 9300 run at an identical clock speed, at 2.0 GHz each. Here, the Cortex-A720 cores of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 run at 3.2 GHz. This again points out MediaTek’s explanation of using performance cores for better efficiency.

    Powering On-Device Generative AI

    A chipset launching in 2023 can’t have a successful launch event without talking about its AI capabilities. For AI workloads, the Dimensity 9300 comes with an improved APU 790. It boasts double the integer and floating point capabilities. Also, it offers a 45 percent reduction in power consumption.

    MediaTek claims that the Dimensity 9300 offers 8x performance improvement over the previous. But, the real problem with on-device AI is its high memory requirement. As a workaround, the APU 790 supports INT4 (A16W4). That allows the chipset to run smaller quantized models.

    About on-device applications, the APU 790 of Dimensity 9300 is capable of running 7 billion parameter LLM at a speed of 20 tokens per second. It is fast enough for real-time AI-driven applications.

    Dimensity 9300 Also Brings a Better GPU and Other Features

    The AI features and CPU are two of the biggest aspects of the new CPU. There are others, including the GPU. The Dimensity 9300 comes with the latest ARM Immortalis G720 GPU. It features a 12-core configuration, offering one more core than the predecessor.

    With node and architectural improvements, MediaTek says that this GPU of Dimensity 9300 can offer 23 percent better performance than the 9200. As for the ray tracing performance, the new GPU offers a 46 percent performance uplift. But the most important bit is that the GPU offers a 40 percent power consumption reduction.

    The new GPU also brings support for 2x MASSA and global illumination effects. For geometry-heavy games, the GPU offers 40% memory bandwidth savings. All these will make the Dimensity 9300 provide a better gaming experience.

    • Support for 180 Hz WQHD or 120 Hz 4K panels
    • Dedicated OIS sensor core
    • Always-on HDR capture in 4K cinematic mode with depth of field
    • 5G speeds up to 7 Gbps downlink

    • Full pixel-level autofocus and dual-lossless zoom
    • ARM’s memory tagging extension (MTE)
    • Dedicated secure processor

    Availability

    MediaTek is targeting the Asia and Europe markets for now. There’s no word on Dimensity 9300-powered smartphones arriving in the US. And there’s a chance that most smartphones with this chipset will stay in China. That has been a common trend for Dimensity chipsets.

  • Even if she’s not the strongest, A.K.I. can still checkmate you from 80% life in Street Fighter 6 as shown by Broski











    There’s been much said about A.K.I.’s strength in Street Fighter 6 or apparent lack thereof since her release, but we’re seeing that her venomous bite is still far from harmless.






    Veteran Street Fighter competitor Broski has been going in harder than basically anyone with the game’s new poison user, and he’s shown off some nasty combos / setups in actual matches that can checkmate opponents from as much as 80% of their life.









    The Legend-ranked player starts off by landing a counter hit Drive Impact against a Juri in the corner, which he then goes for the level 1 Super to force the Burnout.


    And that leads to the end of the round.


    Broski uses A.K.I.’s heavy kick into another Drive Impact, which isn’t a true blockstring, but in Burnout, the gap isn’t big enough to jump out of — so Juri is forced to take the stun without a Super reversal.


    From there, he’s able to set up the poison puddle, land in two explosive triggers (thanks to said puddle), get the OTG into four Drive Rush cancels, and she builds just enough meter back to land the level 3 Super to close out the game.



    On top of that, our boss, Jon ‘Catalyst’ Grey, witnessed another impressive combo from Broski that is just slightly less expensive to pull off.


    A Punish Counter heavy kick near the corner leads into another full sequence with her leaping strike and 3 back-to-back Drive Rushes to keep Kimberly juggled in the air to land the level 3 and take off 64% of her health in seconds.


    These are situational and very expensive setups to pull off, so that doesn’t negate her issues of getting to that point — but Broski shows they are very much possible to perform in real matches against other people.



    We’re seeing that A.K.I.’s got some gas that’s worth exploring and delving into now, and at the very least, how close she is to being a true threat even in this initial “weak” state.

  • Poco C65 Lands With 50MP Camera, 90Hz Display, and More

    After being teased a few days back, the Poco C65 became official today. As the successor of the Poco C55, the smartphone builds on its predecessor and offers some improvements in some of the crucial aspects.

    Among those improvements, the Poco C65 comes with a better display, faster charging, and, most importantly, a better camera system. But it’s not an entirely brand-new device, as some of the specs of the handset match with its predecessor.

    Main Highlights of Poco C65

    On the front, the Poco C65 has a 6.74-inch IPS LCD screen with a 1600x720px resolution. It’s a bit larger and packs more pixels than the predecessor. But what’s really important about the screen is that it supports a 90Hz refresh rate. The C55 came with a 60Hz refresh rate. Thanks to this, the motions on the new smartphone will feel more fluid.

    The front also houses the 8MP selfie camera, which is a step up from the 5MP unit found in the Poco C55. Poco has also integrated a soft light ring on the selfie camera of C65. This will make the phone offer better selfie performance even in low-light conditions.

    On the back, the Poco C65 comes with a 50MP primary sensor. It has a f/1.8 aperture and is paired by a 2MP f/2.4 macro sensor. The inclusion of a macro camera is good, as the predecessor came with a 0.08MP depth camera. As for the battery, the smartphone features a 5000mAh cell that can charge at 18 watts.

    To compare, the Poco C55 could only charge at 10 watts. More importantly, the Poco C65 comes with a USB type-C port, while the C55 features a dated micro-USB port. These two improvements will offer a better charging experience on the new smartphone.

    The rest of the specs are pretty standard. Poco utilized the same MediaTek Helio G85 found in the Poco C55 in the new phone. As for storage and RAM, there are two options available: 6/128 and 8/256. The C65 is available in purple, blue, and black. Poco will soon offer pricing and availability info regarding the device.

  • Is this janky Dungeons & Dragons PlayStation fighting game the worst the genre has to offer?











    With almost 50 years under its belt now, the realms of Dungeons & Dragons have quite the history with licensed video games, but not so much fighting games — and there might be a good reason for that.






    Matt McMuscles recently released his latest episode of The Worst Fighting game taking a much closer look at the ill-fated Iron & Blood: Warriors of Ravenloft to go back and see how bad of a critical failure the game rolled for the genre.









    The game began life without official connections to D&D as its own thing with Ironblood from fresh developers at Take 2 Interactive in the mid ’90s for the Panasonic 3DO M2, which was a console that never hit shelves.


    If that weren’t enough of an omen to dissuade them, the project was moved to the original PlayStation and DOS where they struggled to get motion capture to work properly, but hey, they ended up getting the D&D license after all mid-way through the project.


    Problem was, however, the publisher Acclaim didn’t give the team (working on their only console game they self-developed) any additional time to fully flesh out the world of Ravenloft into the 3D fighter.


    As for the game itself, Iron & Blood dwells deep within the jank of PS1 3D fighters with all the awkward presentation and sound effects you could ask for except they replaced the life bars with torch flames that slowly extinguish.


    For a four-button fighter (including a miscellaneous attack button), each character only sports two specials they can perform and a few target combos in matches that can take forever with Matt describing how characters have multiple “lives” on top of fighting on teams.


    But those aren’t even the weirdest mechanics.


    Iron & Blood seems to have the best shot in recent times at dethroning Expect No Mercy at the bottom of the fighting game barrel, but you’ll need to check out Matt McMuscles’ video below for the full breakdown and final ranking.

  • MediaTek Announces Dimensity 9300 Chipset to Take on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

    As announced previously, MediaTek has finally made its high-end chipset, the Dimensity 9300 official. This one directly rivals Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform, which was introduced recently. Check out the details below.

    The Dimensity 9300 SoC, which succeeds the Dimensity 9200, is based on the third-gen 4nm process and has an octa-core setup. This includes four Arm Cortex-X4 cores with up to 3.25GHz clock speed and four Cortex-A720 cores clocked at up to 2.0GHz. It is touted as the first one to use “all big cores for extreme performance.” In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has a maximum clock speed of 3.3GHz.

    The presence of the Immortalis-G720 GPU provides up to 46% increased GPU performance and 4% less power consumption. You also get hardware-based ray tracing for “console-level global illumination effects at a smooth 60fps.”

    The chipset supports the new APU 790 AI processor with improved generative AI performance and up to 45% reduced power consumption. There’s also support for NeuroPilot Fusion, which can enable support for large language models.

    Joe Chen, President at MediaTek, said, “The Dimensity 9300 is MediaTek’s most powerful flagship chip yet, bringing a huge boost in raw computing power to flagship smartphones with our groundbreaking All Big Core design. This unique architecture, combined with our upgraded on-chip AI Processing Unit, will usher in a new era of generative AI applications as developers push the limits with edge AI and hybrid AI computing capabilities.

    For the photography bit, the chipset has a low-power AI-ISP and support for always-on HDR up to 4K resolution, 4K AI Noise Reduction (AI-NR), and AI processing on RAW photos and videos, among other things. It also provides support for Android 14’s Ultra HDR format. The display configurations include WQHD at 180Hz and 4K up to 120Hz. There’s also the MiraVision Picture Quality (PQ) engine for enhanced picture quality.

    Additionally, the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipset comes with Wi-Fi 7, a 5G R16 modem, and much more. The first MediaTek Dimensity 9300 phones will be released by the end of 2023, starting with the Vivo X100 series scheduled to launch on November 13. So, stay tuned for further details.

  • The Global Tablet Market Faces Steep Decline in Q3 2023

    The tablet market has hit another rough patch in the third quarter of 2023, witnessing a stark 14.2% year-over-year decline, with only 33.2 million units shipped worldwide. This decline follows a massive 29.9% YoY decrease in Q2 2023. And while the demand remains challenging, the market did experience an 18% uptick from the previous quarter due to seasonal factors.

    Apple Holds Its Ground Despite Challenges

    Despite these challenging times, Apple continues to lead the tablet market, shipping 12.5 million units. Though this marks a 15.1% year-over-year decline. Interestingly, Apple didn’t introduce any new models during Q3, which usually bolsters sales. Nevertheless, the tech giant retained its market share.

    Market Leaders and Their Performance

    In second place is Samsung, with 6 million units shipped, showing resilience in the face of market adversity. Lenovo and HUAWEI secured the third and fourth positions, shipping 2.6 million and 2.3 million units, respectively. Meanwhile, Amazon made a surprise comeback to the top 5, capitalizing on the holiday season and launching a new value-priced premium device, the Fire Max 11.

    Chromebooks Face a Slump

    On the flip side, Chromebook shipments also took a hit in 3Q23, with a decline of 20.8%. However, there is hope that the Chromebook market might bounce back thanks to an impending refresh in the education sector and remaining government budget allocations.

    Tablets’ Ongoing Struggle

    Tablets have always struggled to find their niche between PCs and smartphones, which continues to negatively impact the market, according to Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC‘s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. To thrive, tablet manufacturers are realizing that they work best when complementing PCs and smartphones. This could mean more integrated software and services experiences in the future, though it might take time to materialize.

    Gloomy Outlook for the Tablet Market

    Anuroopa Nataraj, Senior Research Analyst with IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, paints a somber picture: “The first three quarters of 2023 have seen significant contractions in the tablet market, and the approaching holiday season isn’t likely to bring significant changes. With macroeconomic conditions showing little improvement, it is anticipated that project and purchase delays will extend into 2024. While a potential refresh in the education sector and increased use cases across different industries may provide some long-term stability for the tablet market, the near future does not hold much promise for a substantial increase in tablet sales.” The tablet market’s road to recovery appears to be long and uncertain.

  • PS5 Slim Teardown Reveals Same 6nm Processor, Cooling Upgrades

    People have started to tear down the new PlayStation 5 model, which is referred to by most as the PS5 Slim. Earlier, we had shared leaked photos of the console and compared how PS5 Slim vs PS5 compares in size. Today, we will be discussing the internals of the new PS5 Slim, courtesy of Linus Tech Tips and Dave2D who have already performed a teardown of the PlayStation 5 Slim.

    What’s Inside the PlayStation 5 Slim? Teardown Reveals

    The highlight of the new PlayStation 5 model is the fact that it is a smaller, lighter gaming console. With the teardown, we can now discuss many of the internal characteristics of the PS5 Slim. Previously, we speculated that a newer processor with a better manufacturing process would be used in the PS5 Slim. However, the teardown reveals that it’s a 6nm processor after all.

    This is different from the original PS5 model that shipped with a 7nm processor, however, a 5nm or 4nm processor was expected based on speculations (before the PS5 Slim launch). If you did not know, Sony quietly updated the PS5 with a 6nm processor in September 2022.

    So, these rumors can now be discarded entirely because the PS5 Slim still uses the same processor as used in the existing console. The PS5 Slim’s 6nm chipset was further confirmed with a system power consumption test revealing that both the current and new PS5 models consume similar levels of power (via LTT) being within the margin of error.

    So, how was the PS5 Slim made possible? A complete redesign has been done by Sony. The modular design helps it achieve a smaller size with the removable disc drive. The cooler has been changed too, as the slimmer model features an extra heat pipe, however, it is attached to a smaller baseplate as compared to the OG PlayStation 5.

    Reportedly, the fan has also changed to a 19-blade design and the team behind the PlayStation 5 Slim’s design has put in the maximum amount of effort to use the internal space as efficiently as possible. Liquid metal is still being used as Sony’s choice of thermal interface material (TIM), and this is better than thermal paste.

    In a little over a week, Xiaomi introduced its latest Android operating system. While the Xiaomi 14 series smartphones come equipped with this new OS straight out of the box, Xiaomi enthusiasts are ready as the company gears up to bring this update to a wider range of phones in the weeks to come. Initially launching in China, the global rollout plan for the Xiaomi HyperOS has recently surfaced.

    What’s got Xiaomi enthusiasts buzzing is that the company is already testing this fresh update on a select number of devices worldwide. Intriguingly, these phones are currently undergoing trials of the HyperOS. And the twist here is that it’s based on Android 14. This could mean that both Android 14 and HyperOS will be unleashed at the same time. But here’s the catch: those already running Android 14 beta with MIUI 14 should anticipate receiving the stable Android 14 update with MIUI before transitioning to HyperOS.

    According to Gsmchina, nine Xiaomi phones are part of this global HyperOS testing, and they’re likely to be among the first to savor the upgrade. It’s worth noting that the list doesn’t feature any Redmi or POCO phones, but don’t lose hope just yet – these devices might still get a piece of the action.

    While the latest Xiaomi HyperOS global rollout plan appears to focus on Xiaomi phones, it’s anyone’s guess whether separate plans will surface for Redmi and POCO models. However, given that many POCO and Redmi phones are essentially revamped Xiaomi phones, there’s a good chance that the update will eventually trickle down to all these models.

    • Next, click on the “Codes” button at the top right to go to the redemption screen.
    • You will now see an empty text box where you can type in your code.
    • Once done, click on “Redeem.” And just like that, you are done!

    • Success in Redemption
