  • How to Emulate macOS Interface on your Linux System

In September, Apple introduced the macOS Sonoma update, enhancing the visual aspects of the Mac system. While running the latest macOS on non-Apple devices is challenging, you can emulate its look on a Linux system due to the extensive customization options in this open-source operating system. This guide compiles various methods to give your preferred Linux distribution a makeover with a macOS theme.

    Installing GNOME Extension Manager

    Linux MacOS

If your Linux distribution operates on the GNOME desktop environment, you can modify its layout by installing specific extensions. Utilizing the GNOME Shell Extension Manager, accessible through the Linux Terminal, simplifies this process. Execute the following command to proceed:

    sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-manager -y

Next, install the GNOME Tweaks app, a tool designed for modifying the appearance of the Ubuntu desktop. Execute the following command in the Terminal:

    sudo apt install gnome-tweaks -y

    Adding MacOS Theme to Linux

    Linux macOS

After installing the GNOME Shell Extension, proceed to download and set up a macOS theme. You can either get a theme from Pling or install Git and clone a repository from GitHub. For instance, MacOS Sonoma by BRAHIMSALEM on Pling is excellent, or you can download Linux-MacOS-GNOME by vinceliuice from GitHub.

    • First, go ahead and download macOS Sonoma by BRAHIMSALEM from the Pling Store.
    • After the download is complete, extract the contents to the .themes folder in your Home directory.
    • Usually, the .theme folder is hidden by default. If it is hidden in your case, just press Ctrl+H to unhide it within the file manager.
    • If the folder doesn’t appear, create a new directory by entering the command “mkdir ~/.themes” in the Terminal.

Applying the macOS Theme to Linux

After you have downloaded the theme, install the user themes extension to apply the downloaded theme to the entire interface. To do this, follow the simple steps below.

    • Open the Extension app that you downloaded earlier and head to the Browse tab and search for themes.
    • Now, click on the Install button next to the User Theme.
    • Next, open Tweaks and navigate to the Appearance tab.
    • Click on the dropdown menu next to “Applications” then select “Sonoma.”
    • Also choose Sonoma as the theme for the Shell option.

    Setting Up macOS Icons

After adding the Sonoma theme, you can change the icons on your Linux system to resemble those on macOS. I recommend using macOS-Ventura-Icons by abhishek-zambare, or you can also try the WhiteSur-icon-theme by vinceliuice, which provides a similar look.

    • Click on this link to head to the Plink Store to download macOS Ventura Icons.
    • In the Home directory, extract the icons pack into the .icons folder.
    • If are unable to locate the .icons folder, you may have to create a new one. Use the mkdir ~/.icons command to create a new one.

    Adding Dynamic Wallpaper

Recent macOS versions, starting from the Mojave update, include dynamic wallpapers that shift based on the time of day. To replicate this feature on Linux, you can utilize the Linux Dynamic Wallpapers package by Saint-13.

    Installing New Fonts on Linux

    Fonts

The flexibility of Linux doesn’t stop at themes, icons, and extensions. You can also incorporate new fonts into the OS. While Apple’s San Francisco font is proprietary, we can use the free-to-use Inter font as a similar alternative. Follow these steps to install it:

    • Head to this link to download the Inter fonts package.
    • In the Home directory, extract the fonts into the .fonts folder.
    • If the .fonts folder refuse to appear, run the mkdir ~/.fonts command in the terminal to enable it.
    • After that, open the Tweaks tab and head to the Fonts tab.
    • Choose “Inter Regular” or any other font you added to the .fonts folder from the menu next to Interface Text, then click Select.

Enabling the Magic Lamp Effect Extension

    Linux macOS

The Genie effect in macOS makes application windows shrink into the dock when you click the minimize button. You can achieve a similar effect on Linux using the Compiz-like Magic Lamp extension.

    • To do this, open Extension Manager and select Browse.
    • In the search bar, type Magic Lamp and click on the install button next to the Compiz alike magic lamp effect.

You can install the Blur My Shell and Quick Settings extensions using a similar procedure. The Blur My Shell extension adds a blurring effect to the shell, while the Quick Settings extension changes the appearance of the quick settings menu to a more macOS-like layout.

    Customizing the Dock in Linux

    Dock

Lastly, you can modify the Linux taskbar to resemble the macOS application dock. Install the Dash to Dock extension from the Extensions app for this purpose. While this extension generally functions smoothly on most Linux distros, it may encounter issues on Ubuntu. As a workaround, you can utilize the Settings app to adjust the taskbar layout.

    • Open Settings and navigate to the Appearance tab.
    • In the Dock section, click on the dropdown arrow beside Position on screen and select Bottom.
    • Now, you must uncheck the toggle next to the Panel Mode.

    Conclusion

These are all the steps you can take to make your Linux system look more like macOS. While your computer will resemble macOS to a large extent, it will still operate on the Linux kernel. To achieve the full Sonoma experience, you would need to set up a macOS virtual machine or switch to a new Mac laptop or iMac desktop.

  • The Super Mario RPG remake could really renew Geno’s chances for a slot in the Super Smash Bros. series

Super Mario RPG, the remake for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo, is scheduled to be released November 17 — this Friday. Technically speaking, Super Mario RPG and its upcoming remake are the only times in which Geno has been playable, though the Geno doll did make a cameo appearance in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Despite his seldom appearances, Geno has garnered quite a cult following over the years. Needless to say, fans have been pushing this idea suggesting that Geno is deserving of a character slot within the Super Smash Bros. series.

While it might seem too outlandish of an idea to have Geno playable in Smash considering that he’s only had one playable appearance up to this point, it’s actually an idea that has been considered by Masahiro Sakurai before.

Back in April 2016, Nintendo Dream (translations from Source Gaming) asked Sakurai about Geno. Apparently, Sakurai at one point actually wanted to put Geno in Smash, but had to settle for making him into a Mii costume due to unknown reasons.

“To tell the truth, it’s because I wanted Geno to be a playable character,” said Sakurai. “He has a gun for a hand, and I think he fits in really well with Smash. During Brawl, I thought it would be great if I could add him, but in the end it didn’t become a reality.”

“That’s right. He’s very popular,” continued Sakurai. “When talking about older characters, Geno always gets a lot of requests. He didn’t appear as a fighter, but I was able to achieve something kind of close to that as a Mii Costume.”

As of right now, there’s been no official news about a Super Smash Bros. entry happening after Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Of course, there are plenty of rumors that indicate that Nintendo is gearing up for a new console release after the Nintendo Switch.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate remains as the third best-selling title on the Nintendo Switch with over 32.44 million sales worldwide. Due to this, we should probably expect a sequel to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at some point, though even the creator himself isn’t exactly sure how to follow up after Smash Ultimate.

There’s been plenty of talk about the idea of a “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Deluxe,” an enhanced port of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Switch follow up. The idea would be similar to what Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was on the Nintendo Switch in that it added new characters and content to how Mario Kart 8 was originally on the Nintendo Wii U.

Regardless, the existence of the Super Mario RPG remake could renew Geno’s chances at becoming playable sometime in the future. While it isn’t known why he wasn’t made playable before, this remake is a potential sign that the issue previously preventing Geno’s entry could be resolved now.

Ultimately, we’ll just have to see how things play out in the future, but things are looking promising for Geno fans.

    Hint for Today’s Connections Themes

If you want to learn about what today’s categories are based on but only through hints, check out these clues first.

    • Yellow Category – We are all repulsed from time to time
    • Green Category – Read a lot of magazines?
    • Blue Category – More than one way to say yes
    • Purple Category – A word might sound the same, but it might not mean it

Additional Hint: Word pronunciations can be misleading

We wish we could go into more detail in this section, but these hints are the best we can share for now. They are all closely related to the categories in question today, so think long and hard before you scroll below to see today’s categories. Still stuck? Try these easy tricks to solve NYT Connections.

Spoiler Warning #1: While this section included hints for the categories, the next section names them directly. It will spoil the categories for today’s Connections puzzleScroll down only if you’re sure.

    Today’s Connections Category Names

Still stuck? In that case, here are the themes for today’s categories for NYT Connections.

    • Yellow – “GROSS!”
    • Green – MAGAZINES
    • Blue – “YES” IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES

    • “YES” IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES – Hai, Ja, Si, Da
    • HOMOPHONES – Oui, We, Wee, WII
    Connections Nov 15 Answer

When I first saw the word grid for Connections today, I was equal parts confused and annoyed. However, after composing myself, I began wrestling with languages and how some of these might mean yes. And while I was almost there, Oui kept holding me back. That was when my colleague pointed out that it could be a homophone. Once we saw that, we collected all similar words and got the purple category first! Yeah, the purple category ().

Once Oui was out of the way, it was easy to club the other languages together and get the blue category. The Yellow one followed almost immediately, even though I had to stop and think (Google!) about what Pu meant. With only four words left again, I combined them to finally get the Green category and solved the NYT Connections for November 15.

What about you? How was your experience with today’s puzzle? Where did you get stuck if you did? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Is Omni-Man worth the money in Mortal Kombat 1?

As tradition would have it, NetherRealm Studios’ latest fighting game will feature a number of guest characters for their DLC lineup. As such, Omni-Man from Skybound Entertainment’s Invincible series is the first of many DLC guest characters to join Mortal Kombat 1’s roster.

Thanks to the early access perk of the Kombat Pack 1, we’ve had a few days to experience how Omni-Man plays. So now we’re here to determine if Omni-Man is worth the money or not.

Upon first seeing Omni-Man, one might be led to think that he’d just play like a typical superhero from the Injustice series, but in Mortal Kombat. Omni-Man’s powers and abilities are pretty comparable to Superman, so he’d play just like Superman from Injustice and Injustice 2, right?

While some similarities could be observed when going from Injustice’s Superman to Mortal Kombat 1’s Omni-Man, it becomes clear when playing Omni-Man that this is an entirely unique combatant compared to any other character that NetherRealm Studios has ever designed.

First off, it’s clear that Omni-Man is designed to be simple when it comes to his rush down. Most of his basic buttons and strings leave him at either low negative frames or neutral on block with his opponent.

Notably, his 1, 2 string (front punch, back punch string) leaves him at a +3 advantage on block, but players should be careful when setting up frame traps with this string as the first hit connects as a high.

Through just his strings alone, he actually has two launchers that start as mids. Not only do they launch, but they’re also fairly safe since they’re only -6 and -7 on block.

Getting hit by Omni-Man can be particularly pricey since his damage is consistently in the 300s to 400s range. Even without spending any meter and only using Kameos, Omni-Man can easily break the 400s with one of his safe launchers.

However, Omni-Man won’t really be participating in full-screen projectile battles since he doesn’t have projectiles of his own, unless you want to count his Mega-Clap special. Of course, Mega-Clap and Enhanced Mega-Clap only go about a fourth and half the screen respectively.

Regardless, this doesn’t really pose as much of a weakness for Omni-Man since he was also given access to some of the best-anti-zoning tools in the game. Even his normal overhead, F2 (forward and back punch), can pass through projectiles, though it is unsafe on block.

The Viltrumite Stance is where Omni-Man really shines. While in this stance, the fighter will naturally avoid all projectiles that come his way. Furthermore, he can get around projectiles with a variety of attacks out of this stance even when at a full screen’s distance.

Using the Tiebreaker out of the Viltrumite Stance is an excellent way to hit the opponent when they’re trying to zone you. It’s only -1 on block and can sometimes create a juggle opportunity with the right variables in play (requires the opponent to either be in the corner or for them to be moving forward).

Of course, it’s important to be aware that the Tiebreaker becomes punishable if the opponent is able to make the right prediction and use up block. Therefore, it’s best to use this move in specific situations.

Luckily for Omni-Man, the Viltrumite Stance is a pretty noncommittal option since he can just straight up cancel it or even teleport behind the opponent. What’s really scary about this option is the fact that it can even be used while Omni-Man is airborne.

Finally, his Thragged Through Mud follow up is an amazing combo extender tool that doesn’t even cost meter. It’s important to understand that, although it looks like a command grab, this attack can be blocked and punished if used recklessly.

As for the Enhanced version of Viltrumite Stance, it will even dodge mids and highs thrown against Omni-Man. This will be particularly useful to players that memorize every character’s string gaps since this’ll allow the player to full combo punish sequences that are even supposed to be safe.

Like most counter-type moves in NetherRealm Studios games, even the Enhanced Viltrumite Stance will fail against low attacks. It’s also kept in check by the fact that it has a 7 frame start up before it can dodge attacks.

Playing Omni-Man is incredibly fun. His animations and combos are super exhilarating to pull off. You don’t usually get a brawler-type character that’s flashy, but NetherRealm Studios managed to make something special with Omni-Man.

Even though we’ve had characters with super speed before in NRS titles, the developers have never pulled off anything that’s quite as sensational as using Omni-Man’s super speed to sort of “blur” past opponents. It’s so incredibly satisfying to do these sort of things.

One of the only downsides about Omni-Man is that it’s not possible to select him during the final chapter of Mortal Kombat 1’s main story (the chapter where the player is allowed to choose any character). For now, it’s unknown if this will apply to all DLC fighters or just the guest characters.

While I’m not too knowledgeable about the Invincible series, what little I do know about Omni-Man does suggest that NetherRealm Studios did an excellent job with references. This should be immediately apparent considering that J.K. Simmons, the voice of Omni-Man in the animated story, is also doing the voice of the character in Mortal Kombat 1.

The developers are clearly aware of some of the memes surrounding Invincible considering that Omni-Man, in J.K. Simmons’ voice, can sometimes exclaim “Think, THINK!” between rounds.

Additionally, Omni-Man’s two Fatalities and Fatal Blow appear to be direct references to some of the more brutal things that Omni-Man has done in Season 1. Even some of his Brutalities will have him killing his opponents in ways that should seem familiar to fans.

It’s still too early truly assess where Omni-Man will fit in the overall meta of Mortal Kombat 1, but my prediction for right now indicates that he’ll be a solid high tier or even top tier that has the potential to take the tournament scene by storm. After all, it’s pretty rare for NetherRealm Studios to add a guest character to one of their games that didn’t make a notable impact in the meta.

Overall, the design of Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1 has been amazingly executed (aside from the fact that he apparently deals different amounts of damage between the console and PC ports of the game). In many ways, playing Omni-Man really does feel like playing an unrestrained version of Superman in the Mortal Kombat universe, though Omni-Man still manages to have a unique identity that’s unlike any other that NRS has created.

Omni-Man is the first of six DLC fighters coming to Mortal Kombat 1 via the Kombat Pass. So far, this is a really good start as Omni-Man is certainly a character that everyone should try out at some point.

The Kombat Pass can be picked up for $19.99. However, those that just want Omni-Man can get him as a standalone DLC character starting on November 16 for $7.99.

  • How to Set a Sleep Timer on Spotify

If you are someone who has a hard time sleeping, listening to your favorite songs or podcasts on Spotify helps a lot. However, there’s a high chance that you may doze off with the music streaming service playing all night. Your phone’s battery backup will understandably take a bit of a hit. That is exactly where the Spotify sleep timer comes in handy. With this feature, you can choose to pause the music playback after a specific duration. So, if you want to learn how to use this feature on Spotify, here’s a detailed guide.

Use Sleep Timer in Spotify Android & iOS App

The sleep timer feature only works with the Spotify Android and iOS mobile app. It does not work with the web or desktop apps. However, you can schedule your Mac or Windows PC’s native display sleep time to act like this feature.

So, for those who use their phones to listen to music before bed, we have outlined the steps to set the sleep timer on the Spotify app. We’re using the Android app for this demo, but the steps remain the same on iPhone as well.

    • Head to the Spotify app and play the song that you want to listen to.
    • Now, on the Now Playing screen, tap on the three-dot menu at the top-right corner.
    • In the pop-up menu that opens, scroll down to find the sleep timer option. Tap on it.

    • Next, select your desired sleep timer duration. You can select a duration anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour. You can also choose to pause the playback at the “end of track,” as shown below.
    • Once you select the duration, you will see a small confirmation message saying that your sleep timer has been set.
Setting the duration of the Spotify sleep timer

With that, you have successfully learned how to set a sleep timer and save battery juice while you’re asleep. Moreover, if it takes you longer to fall asleep, you could simply repeat the steps to extend the timer or turn it off.

Spotify recently removed a lot of free features for its Indian users, and fortunately, the sleep timer is not one of them. Although the feature is very convenient, it would be great to see the option to set a custom duration. This will allow people who can’t fall asleep within an hour to have more control over the timer instead of having to constantly extend it.
