  • Upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 PC mod aims to make the Kameo Fighters into playable characters and there’s already footage of it in action

Mortal Kombat 1’s combat system revolves around 2v2 battles. You take control of a main playable character and choose one Kameo Fighter (assist) that contributes attacks to your fight with the press of a quick button.

While the system itself has been fairly well received by fans, there are undoubtedly some folks who aren’t the happiest that their favorite characters have been relegated to just a Kameo Fighter and not an actual playable character. However, the PC mod community is now working on a way to make it so that you can actually select the Kameo characters and play them on point as main roster fighters instead.

Prominent Mortal Kombat 1 PC modder Ermaccer has shared their first glimpse at this PC mod in action over on X (formerly Twitter). First up, there are a handful of screenshots showing the likes of Sareena, Sonya, and Jax taking the lead position in the fight.

Even better than that, though, is the gameplay footage Ermaccer also shared on YouTube. The video runs through several of the Kameos’ basic combo strings, specials, and more, and we get to see Sareena, Stryker, Jax, and Sonya up to bat first.

Naturally, some of the attacks these Kameos have as point characters take from other actual main roster fighters in order to flesh out their move sets more. For example, we see that Stryker is currently equipped with Johnny Cage’s nut punch.

Here’s a little more about this mod from the creator:

“This is a proof of concept for upcoming MK1Hook feature!” wrote Ermaccer on X. “You will be able to swap character definitions (Kameo->Main and vice versa), it will be pretty limited as you have to use already loaded definition to swap (so if you want to play as a kameo and use a kameo, you will have to set P2 kameo to the character you want to play as).

“Other than that, initial script calling will also be featured. And as mentioned in descriptions, kameos have to use someones else moveset (so specials, xrays and fatalities),” concluded the modder.

Ermaccer noted that they will likely aim to wrap this mod up after the Tremor DLC Kameo Fighter gets added to the game — which will be on November 20. Until then, check out the footage below to see how some of Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo Fighters could fight as point characters.

  • NYT Connections Hints and Answers for November 17, 2023

I don’t know what the NYT Editorial team was thinking today, but it sure feels like their mood soured midway through creating today’s NYT Connections for November 17. One moment, I am having the time of my life, and the other, I’m left utterly confused with the words in front of me. If you wish to avoid suffering, then I suggest you keep reading as we discuss all the hints, categories, and finally, the answer for NYT Connections today.

    Hint for Today’s Connections Themes

We start by hinting at the categories so we can help you out just a bit. Check out the hints below and see if you can guess some of the word categories.

    • Yellow Category – Not every exercise requires weights
    • Green Category – We all end emails differently
    • Blue Category – related to game with a pitcher
    • Purple Category – Surnames that have one thing in common

Additional Hint: The Major League Baseball has a lot of teams

We wish we could go into more detail in this section, but these hints are the best we can share for now. They are all closely related to the categories in question today, so think long and hard before you scroll below to see the exact categories. But if you find yourself stuck like this, then maybe trying these tricks to solve NYT Connections could work.

Spoiler Warning #1: While this section included hints for the categories, the next section names them directly. Make sure you’re ready to spoil the categories before scrolling.

    Today’s Connections Category Names

If you still can’t figure out the names, then perhaps it’s better if we just tell you the categories in this section.

    • Yellow – BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES
    • Green – EMAIL SIGN-OFFS
    • Blue – M.L.B TEAMS, FOR SHORT
    • Purple – ELIZABETHS (AND ONE ELISABETH)

Spoiler Warning #2: We hope you can guess the words now. However, If you still can’t, then it’s time to scroll down. The next section includes the answer for today’s puzzle; you will see all the answers in their categories. This is your final chance to back up.

    Connections Answer for November 17

Stuck with the puzzle even after the categories? In that case, the answers to today’s Connections puzzle are:

    • BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES – Dips, Lunges, Planks, Squats
    • EMAIL SIGN-OFFS – Best, Cheers, Regards, Thanks
    • M.L.B TEAMS, FOR SHORT – Cards, Jays, Nats, Yanks
    • ELIZABETHS (AND ONE ELISABETH) – Banks, Moss, Taylor, Warren
    Connections Nov 17

Looking at these answers, even you will agree the weird rollercoaster today’s NYT Connections is. I began the game gloriously by solving the Yellow and Green categories back to back. I mean, anyone would have, given how basic they are. However, my entire ego got deflated when I realized that’s as far as I would get.

I moved on to the Blue and Purple categories but instantly got stumped. As someone who has zero experience in baseball, all these names made no sense to me. The fact that the Purple category was related to celebrity names confused me even more. Being hopeless, I turned to my colleagues for support. Sadly, even that fell flat today. Once we had exhausted all our chances, we lost and got the Connections answer for November 17.

What about you? How was your experience with today’s puzzle? Where did you get stuck if you did? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Capcom shares Street Fighter 6 online character usage stats for October, reveals who has the most Modern and Classic players

A fresh batch of Street Fighter 6 online character usage stats has come straight out of the oven. Capcom has shared their data for last month’s online play, showing who gets the most use across the game’s netplay landscape.

This time, the company has unveiled the monthly statistics for October 2023. In a fresh twist, however, Capcom has also revealed which characters have the most Modern players and which have the most Classic.

Starting with the character usage stats, from what we can see there wasn’t a lot of change between September and October 2023. Back in September, the top 5 in the Rookie rank consisted of Juri, Cammy, Ken, Luke, and Jamie in that order — witch Jamie having stolen Chun-Li’s spot at #5.

For October, the top 5 in this category remained exactly the same, meaning newer players are still really enjoying playing some of the top tiers and Jamie (who isn’t considered very good right now, but clearly remains popular).

Funny enough, in the other two categories the only changes we see involve Luke and Marisa. In the Iron through Gold ranks, Luke pushed out Marisa for the #5 spot while the rest of the top 5 remained the same.

Lastly, in the higher ranks (Platinum through Master), we only see Luke and Marisa switch places. Marisa now sits at 4th most-used in this category and Luke has gone up to #3.

Outside of that, the latest placements all seem logical and understandable. The Shoto characters (Ken, Ryu, and Luke) always remain popular, as well as Juri and Cammy — who aren’t just two of the most popular female fighters in the franchise, but also happen to be strong characters in this game.

Moving over to control type, though, we find some interesting facts. Starting with Modern, Capcom has shared who the top 3 characters are that players are most using Modern controls for.

At the top of the list (and probably the only time she’ll be at the top of any list) is Lily, who apparently has a 50/50 split of Classic and Modern control users. This isn’t surprising as Modern Lily has easier access to some of her better tools with Modern, and in the grand scheme of things she doesn’t lose too much in the way of normals or attacks.

After that we see Luke with 48% Modern and 52% Classic, and lastly Marisa at #3 with 47% Modern and 53% Classic. These placements are also understandable due to their strength, and personally, it feels like I run into Modern Luke pretty frequently.

As far as the Classic control users go, they seem to have taken the most liking to Ryu above everyone else. The Street Fighter poster boy
has 79% of his player base using Classic, while Guile has 76% and JP has 73% Classic users.

You can check out the latest Street Fighter 6 stats below.

  • Apple Confirms iPhone Will Support RCS Messaging from Next Year

    apple-confirms-RCS-support-is-coming-to-iMessage-on-iPhone

Looks like Google’s constant pestering has brought great shame to Apple and its blue-bubble empire, as the Cupertino giant has confirmed that it will adopt the RCS messaging standard “early next year.” YES, we are not joking. Only a day after Nothing Chats was announced to bring iMessage support to Android, Apple has played its ace card.

Apple will be embracing the RCS messaging standard, enabling smooth communication between iPhone and Android phones, at last. This will put an end to the blue bubble-green bubble drama, and the humiliation several Android users face in group chats just because they are not a part of Apple’s walled garden.

In an official statement (via 9to5Mac), an Apple spokesperson stated that the company “will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association.” RCS will enable “a better interoperability experience” across iPhones and Android phones as compared to SMS and MMS, which iMessage currently relies on, they added.

It’s (surprising yet) amazing to see that Apple finally agrees to the fact that RCS is better than standard SMS and MMS. But there’s a catch and quite an important one. RCS is not replacing iMessage on iPhones. Instead, the company will be offering RCS support alongside iMessage.

The communication between iPhone users will continue to rely on iMessage, as emphasized in 9to5Mac’s article. This means most of the exclusive iMessage features, be it Memoji, handwritten notes, and much more, will continue to be limited to iPhone users. However, the adoption of RCS will enable a host of cross-platform messaging features like typing indicators, read receipts, the ability to share high-res images and videos, and location sharing, among other things.

When is RCS Coming to Your iPhone?

With this, Android phone users will no longer feel like they aren’t part of the cool club, at least if their friends don’t make them feel that way. Now, a question that you might have is – when is RCS coming to iPhones? Well, Apple did not share an exact date and simply mentioned that RCS messaging support will be added to iPhones with a software update sometime in early 2024.

Google’s efforts and the online movement against the pesky blue bubble finally bore fruit. Tim Cook can no longer push you to buy your mom an iPhone. Finally, for those unaware, RCS stands for ‘Rich Communication Services’ and replaces your age-old SMS and MMS. It brings several benefits such as no character or media file size limits, read receipts, and more.

Moreover, RCS doesn’t limit you to just mobile data and works on Wi-Fi as well. However, RCS does not support end-to-end encryption by default, which iMessage does. So, of course, Apple is quick to point out that iMessage is the “best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users” in its official statement.

Apple finally adopting RCS is obviously a huge thing, but we think the green bubbles will stick around. Well, the reason for that is plain and simple, of course. Apple likes to do things its own way, and it might not want to do away with the identity of iMessage – the blue bubbles are what make it different from Android after all.

We will have to wait and see what the engineers at Cupertino are cooking. Until then, share your views and opinions on this announcement in the comments below.

  • Omni-Man brought an Easter egg referencing the movie Whiplash with him to Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1’s first and latest DLC character, Invincible’s Omni-Man, holds a lot of surprises that fans are still finding. Outside of the best combos and tech to use for the fighter — as well as a weird bug that allows Omni-Man to pull the screen and reposition his opponent using his air back dash — some of the best little Easter eggs have been found within the character’s pre-fight dialogue with other kombatants.

We recently saw Sindel revisit her most iconic line from the Mortal Kombat movie when going up against Omni-Man, but she isn’t the only one who uses movie lines in her intros. Omni-Man is voiced in the source material and in Mortal Kombat 1 by accomplished actor J.K. Simmons, and it has now been confirmed that the Superman-like villain actually tosses out one of Simmons’ lines from his role in the movie Whiplash — and it’s fantastic.

Whiplash was released back in 2014 and follows a promising young drummer who aims to be one of the greatest Jazz drummers of all time. Attending school at a cut-throat music conservatory, the drummer becomes the student of Simmons’ character — an established teacher by the name of Mr. Fletcher — whose teachings are incredibly intense and borderline abusive as a means of creating the next Jazz legend.

Fletcher only accepts the best of the best, which means that throughout the movie he gets the opportunity to hurl insults and curse words at his students whenever they mess up. In one scene, Fletcher is speaking to his band as someone tries to enter his space and interrupt him to give him a message.

Without skipping a beat, Simmons’ character breaks his train of thought and rolls right into threatening the person and telling them to leave. He delivers a cold and convincing, “Get the f*** out of my sight before I demolish you!” and naturally the person who this is directed at can be seen standing there scared and timid.

In Mortal Kombat 1, Omni-Man delivers nearly an identical line to Johnny Cage during one of their pre-fight clashes. It is legitimately the line from Whiplash, just without the curse word.

“You know, you could use some anger management training,” Johnny says to the powerful villain. Omni-Man responds by saying, “Get out of my sight before I demolish you!”

When I first heard that J.K. Simmons would actually be voicing Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1, there was a part of me that hoped NetherRealm Studios would inject a reference to Whiplash into the character. The movie and Simmons’ performance are fantastic, and NRS absolutely crushed it with this Easter egg.

If you’d like to see the Whiplash Easter egg in Mortal Kombat 1, you can check out the comparison below courtesy of Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon and the “vidsthatgohard” X (Twitter) page.

Omni-Man is currently available in Mortal Kombat 1 via early access for those who purchased the Kombat Pack or the Premium Edition of the game. He will see his full launch for everyone on November 16.

Tremor, Mortal Kombat 1’s first DLC Kameo Fighter, will follow on November 20.

  • Intel Meteor Lake Arc iGPU Benchmark Score Surfaces and It’s Impressive!

Intel 14th Gen Intel ARC Scores featured

In the past, the integrated GPU performance in Intel CPUs was barely enough for any graphics-intensive workload. However, Intel aims to change things up completely in the new & upcoming Meteor Lake architecture. As if to confirm this, some leaked benchmark scores of an Intel Arc GPU have found their way online.

These scores come from the MSI Prestige 16 AI Evo Laptop that sports the iGPU. It was first spotted by the X user (formerly Twitter) known as @Benchleaks.

This particular laptop has made an appearance previously, too, in the leaked Intel 14th Gen laptop listings, which happened very recently. The leaked OpenCL benchmark can be found here in the Geekbench database. The processor tested was the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, paired with Intel Arc graphics.

Talking about the score, this specific Intel Arc Graphics variant found on the 155H scored 27,249 pts in the OpenCL test of Geekbench 5. To help you out with some context, we have compared the score against older dedicated GPUs (GTX 10/16 series) from Nvidia and AMD’s highly performant 780M GPU:

GPU Model OpenCL Benchmark Score (Geekbench 5)
    Intel Arc Graphics 27,249 pts
    AMD Radeon 780M (30W) 28,822 pts
    GTX 1050 Ti 23,818 pts
    GTX 1650 (Max-Q) 38,549 pts
Geekbench 5 Compute OpenCL API Scores Compared (Source: Geekbench Database)

This is not a bad score at all, especially for a low-wattage processor. Since this is from an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, the Core Ultra 9 might have an even stronger Intel Arc GPU. The score achieved here is enough to outperform a very popular mid-range GPU that Nvidia released back in the day, known as the GTX 1050 Ti. With this kind of GPU performance, Intel 14th Gen laptops with Arc graphics are going to be quite capable.

Future laptops with onboard Intel Arc GPU and 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPU will give you satisfactory performance in content-creation applications and other GPU-intensive workloads. This GPU won’t be that bad in gaming either, as you can expect it to be decent for light gaming at the very least. We have previously seen Intel show off a demo of the new Arc graphics, where Forza Horizon 5 was maintaining 60 FPS at the Full HD (1920×1080) resolution.

The Radeon 780M is still better, especially if it is present in a laptop with a higher TDP. But, since we don’t know how much the Arc GPU here is pulling in terms of power (W), we cannot make an accurate comparison yet. Hence, the scores of the Radeon 780M (30W) variant were provided. We can see the Intel Arc GPU in 14th Gen Meteor Lake being on par with this specific lower-power variant of the 780M.

Intel is launching its Meteor Lake architecture with various innovative features on its upcoming 14th-generation CPUs very soon. The company’s AI Everywhere event has already been scheduled for next month. In addition to the GPU, Intel is also bringing a new NPU chip to Meteor Lake. You will be able to monitor NPU usage in the task manager, and it is made solely for AI processing!

Do you find the performance improvement exciting on Intel’s Arc GPU that will be present on 14th Gen Meteor Lake processors? This was a much-needed upgrade, and it really makes you take the word ‘integrated GPU’ more seriously. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

  • Boost Your Xiaomi Phone’s Reboot Speed with this Hidden Setting

Xiaomi, a leading Android smartphone manufacturer, has continuously impressed users with its innovative features and user-friendly interface. MIUI 14, the latest iteration of Xiaomi’s customization layer, offers a comprehensive suite of functions designed to enhance the smartphone experience, including a focus mode, a maintenance and security application, and customizable themes.

Enhancing Your Smartphone Experience with Xiaomi’s MIUI 14: A Guide to Faster Reboots

    MIUI Android 14

Among these valuable features lies a somewhat hidden setting that can significantly improve the rebooting process of your Xiaomi device. Rebooting your phone, while occasionally tedious, can be beneficial in resolving various issues and ensuring optimal performance. However, MIUI‘s default rebooting process tends to be somewhat slow. Fortunately, this hidden setting can expedite the rebooting process, allowing you to get back to using your phone quickly and efficiently.

Understanding the Rebooting Process and Auto-Start Applications

To comprehend the effectiveness of this hidden setting, it’s essential to understand the underlying mechanism of the rebooting process. When you restart your phone, the operating system boots up with its critical components and subsequently launches applications that have requested to start automatically. These auto-start applications can include various services, background processes, and even third-party apps.

While auto-start applications serve specific purposes, they can also contribute to a slower rebooting process. This is because the operating system needs to allocate resources and load each auto-start application upon startup, which can prolong the overall rebooting time.

Disabling Unnecessary Auto-Start Applications for Faster Reboots

The hidden setting in MIUI 14 allows you to disable unnecessary auto-start applications, effectively reducing the workload during the rebooting process and consequently speeding it up. This method doesn’t involve any complex steps or technical expertise; it’s a straightforward procedure that can be performed by anyone.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to disable unnecessary auto-start applications on your Xiaomi phone:

    1. Open the Settings app on your Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO device.

    2. Navigate to the Apps section.

    3. Tap on Permissions.

    4. Select the Auto-start setting.

    5. A list of installed applications will appear, each with a toggle switch next to it.

    6. For applications that you don’t consider essential or don’t need to start automatically, toggle the switch to the off position.

    7. Don’t worry about disabling all auto-start applications. You can still open them manually once the system is fully booted. However, consider keeping auto-start enabled for apps that you rely on for important notifications.

    8. This configuration can be reverted at any time by following the same steps and toggling the switches back to the on position.

      Gizchina News of the week

Benefits of Disabling Unnecessary Auto-Start Applications

Disabling unnecessary auto-start applications offers several benefits beyond a faster rebooting process:

    • Reduced resource consumption: By limiting the number of auto-start applications, you can free up system resources, potentially improving overall performance and battery life.

    • Enhanced privacy: Some auto-start applications may collect data or perform actions in the background without your explicit consent. Disabling them can enhance your privacy and control over your device’s activities.

    • Improved app management: By reducing the number of auto-start applications, you gain better control over which apps launch automatically and can identify any potential performance or security concerns.

    Xiaomi MIUI 14

Some tips to make Xiaomi smartphones run faster:

    1. Clear app cache and data

Over time, apps can accumulate cache and data, which can take up a lot of storage space and slow down your phone. To clear app cache and data, go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Storage. Then, tap on Clear Cache and Clear Data.

    2. Uninstall unused apps

If you have a lot of apps that you don’t use, it’s a good idea to uninstall them. This will free up storage space and memory, which can make your phone run faster.

    3. Restart your phone regularly

To restart your phone, press and hold the power button, then tap on Restart.

    4. Use a lightweight launcher

The launcher is the app that you use to open your apps and access your home screen. If you’re using a heavy launcher, it can slow down your phone. A lightweight launcher can help to improve your phone’s performance.

Some popular lightweight launchers include Nova Launcher and Apex Launcher.

    5. Disable animations

Animations can make your phone look nice, but they can also use up resources and slow down your phone. You can disable animations to make your phone run faster.

To disable animations, go to Settings > Additional Settings > Developer Options > Window Animation Scale, Transition Animation Scale, and Animator Duration Scale. Then, set each option to 0.5x.

    6. Keep your phone updated

Xiaomi regularly releases updates for its phones, which can fix bugs and improve performance. It’s important to keep your phone updated to the latest version of MIUI.

To check for updates, go to Settings > About Phone > MIUI Version. If there is an update available, you will be prompted to download and install it.

    7. Use a factory reset as a last resort

If you’ve tried all of the other tips and your phone is still running slowly, you can try doing a factory reset. This will erase all of your data and settings, so it’s important to back up your data before you do this.

To do a factory reset, go to Settings > Additional Settings > Backup & Reset > Erase All Data (Factory Reset). Then, tap on Erase All Data.

By following these tips, you can help to make your Xiaomi phone run faster and smoother.
