Soludo Distributes 2,000 Laptops to Anambra Headteachers, ICT Teachers, Principals

    By Ovat Abeng

In keeping with his mantra of ‘Everything Technology and Technology Everywhere’, the Governor of Anambra State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday, distributed 2,000 brand new laptops to head teachers, ICT teachers, and principals of public and public-mission schools across the state.

The distribution aligns with the vision of the Governor, which the Anambra State ICT Agency is driving, to ensure the full digitization of all sectors of the state economy.

The implication of headteachers, ICT teachers, and principals owning laptops is that they will fully key into the digitization vision of Mr. Governor and, as such, guide school pupils and students early in their lives to join the digital revolution in the state.

In Governor Soludo’s speech, “The teachers are moulders of men and women and as such, critical partners in the new Anambra project.

And if you want to predict the future of any society, look at the quality of their teachers.”

He said the state cannot be talking about Everything Technology and Technology Everywhere when the teachers and head teachers are still in analog mode.

“We have begun and as resources permit us, we will continue to prioritize work tools for our teachers and students.

We will also continue to scale up the numbers.

“We have launched the free public Wi-Fi in some strategic places and we will scale it too to the schools to begin to create the opportunity for the ingenuity and creativity of our students and pupils to find expression.

”We are deliberate about our young people because of their capacity to uptake the technological availing and make the most out of it.

“Therefore, the teachers need to be ahead in terms of technology to be able to champion 21st-century education that is technology-driven.

“We had started with the civil servants and we want to get to the point where every teacher would have their laptops as they have their phones.

“We are very intentional about it that we must provide you with the enabling work tools you require to get our children to the next level we desire technology-wise.

While we aspire to get your schools to be smart, you too must be first smart.

“We have to upscale because you can’t give what you don’t have.

“We have the Head of our ICT Agency and the Solution Innovation District here and we are looking at working with them to have structured training programs, to ensure they put these equipment to use, exploring the latest Artificial Intelligence enablement,” the governor promised.

Soludo maintained that in the last 24 months, the Anambra people have seen the transformation his administration had brought into the state governance, which has positively affected the lives of our people, assuring that more is to come.

On his part, the Managing Director of the State ICT Agency, Mr. Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata, CFA, who played a key role at the event held at the International Conference Centre, Awka, said the governor has again by the distribution, reinforced commitment towards making Anambra State a technology hub, not only in the Southeast but also in the entire nation.

Agbata noted that capturing the teachers in the digitization revolution signifies a brighter future for the state, considering how critical young people are to the state’s technological advancement.

He made it clear that the state has been able to make giant strides in the technology area because Mr. Governor believes in the power of technology and has stepped out a strong foot in terms of investment in the sector.

“Today, the Governor has made Wi-Fi available in some public places where the people’s creativity needs to be enhanced in the areas of education, commerce, and public service.

“There is no doubt that with Mr. Governor’s mindset, better days are ahead for technology.

“For us at the ICT agency, the training which Mr. Governor spoke about is a no-brainer.

“Recall that the ICT Agency has partnered with relevant government agencies to bring technology to ease recruitment processes across various sectors and we are doing more.

“This is just to say that we are ready to drive the ‘Everything Technology and Technology Everywhere’ vision of Mr. Governor, to make Mr. Governor’s dream for a digitized Anambra State, a reality,” Agbata assured.

Some of the recipients of the laptops, whose joys knew no bounds, described Governor Soludo as a proactive leader, who is conscious of the need of the times.

Promising to deploy the equipment effectively for the purpose it was intended, the headteachers and principals said they are at home with the digital revolution the governor is bringing to the state education sector.

Anambra road projects: Tricycle operators declare support for Soludo’s reelection bid

    By Ovat Abeng

No few than 300 Tricycle operators under the umbrella of Anambra Keke Drivers Forum (AKDF), has declared support for governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s reelection bid, come 2025 governorship election in the state.

They said they are backing the governor to enable him complete the ongoing road construction projects across the 21 local government area of the State.

Speaking to journalists shortly after embarking on-the-spot assessment of the ongoing road projects in Awka, the Public Relations Officer of the forum, Amos Nweke said although they had not received any physical cash from the governor, they had saved so much money from frequent visits to mechanic workshop.

He said, “We want to march round the capital city and see for ourselves the massive road constructions being carried out by Soludo across the state.

“During his campaign, the governor promised us he would transform Anambra to African Dubai. We’re very happy he’s keeping to his promise and we call on him to continue.

“With these massive road construction across the state, we believe that other promises, including eradication of touts in the state is a sure bet.

“Although Soludo did not give us any money to carry out this rally, but if I say he has given us money, I won’t be lying because of the money he has saved for us.

“Before he came in, we’ve been paying through our nose in the hands of the touts and unions. We also visit the mechanic regularly because of bad roads.

“But as soon as he came, he eliminated those monies. Before now, I used to visit mechanic every week. But the story has changed. The last time I visited mechanic was in January. I only visit to change oil.

“Even though some mechanic are ignorantly boasting that the reason we’ve not been frequenting their workshops is because of their expertise. But we know it’s because of the good roads.

“I ply from St. Faith to Agulu Awka. Before now, especially during the rainy season, we usually struggle with flood. But now, the road is expressway.

Another member, Peter Umemadufo described Soludo as a man of his words and exceptionally different from his predecessors.

“Honestly, the governor has done well. During his campaign, he promised to declare state of emergency on Anambra roads. That promise he’s keeping.

“We will mobilized to ensure that he is reelected in the 2025 governorship election in the state

“I’m personally happy with him. Soludo has no competitor as long as 2025 election in the state is concerned. We’re telling our people to get their PVC ready.

“The devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know. What he’s done in less than two years, I don’t any other governor before him have done that. Over 400km road across local government areas of the state.”

Coordinator of the group, Comrade Osita Obi said the rally had no political coloration.

He said, “The essence of the road show being carried out by over 300 Keke drivers is to see what the governor is doing, where the tax they’re paying are deployed to.

“We praise the governor where he’s doing well and ask him to continue. We also want more Keke drivers to come into government tax rate so government will have more money to embark on more roads.

“This exercise is not politically motivated. I’m not swayed by any political party, but totally dependent. I praise what is good and criticize what is bad.

“This is my brain child. I’m the sponsor, originator, financier and facilitator. Go and check my pedigree. I started this project over 40 years ago.”

Menace Of Street Trading: Anambra Assembly Urges Soludo To Establish Mini-Markets In Awka

    By Ovat Abeng

Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Governor Charles Soludo to direct the Special Adviser on Trade and Market and the Managing Director, Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, (ACTDA), to commence construction of affordable local mini markets within Awka metropolis.

This is to control the menace of street trading and associated effects on the state capital.

Sponsor of the motion, Hon. Nigeria Henry Mbachu, the member representing Awka South one Constituency (Labour Party), while making his submission said poverty rate was on the increase, and creating avenues for people to earn a living has become mandatory.

“There are many quarters within Awka metropolis which creates the need to establish local mini-markets to serve the people living within those areas.

“It is nearly impossible to secure a shop within the already established markets and the limited shops available are in high and exorbitant price to rent.

“The establishment of mini-markets within Awka metropolis, will be a solution to solve the menace of shanties, street trading and serve as a means of encouraging micro businesses thereby achieving the goals of making Anambra a livable and prosperous homeland.

Awka has one major market in Eke-Awka and its capacity cannot serve the population of people living in the city which resulted to the creation of street treading as an option in other neighbourhood.

A woman selling tomatoes and maggi cannot afford to rent a shop which is not less than 150,000 naira now in Awka and this has made street trading difficult to curb.

Speaking in support of the motion, Minority Whip Mr Paul Obu, Orumba North State Constituency (LP), Chief Whip Hon. Jude Ngobili (Ihiala one), Hon. Patrick Okafor (Onitsha North two), Hon. Golden Iloh (Ihiala two), Hon. Anthony Mobuike (Aguata two), Hon. Bernard Udemezue (Ayamelum) and Hon. Emmanuel Nwafor (Orumba South) in their separate submissions called for the construction of affordable local mini market within Awka metropolis.

“Street trading is a very big menace in the state and is not decent.

Creation of this mini markets will reduce avoidable accident and create easy flow of vehicle. An alternative provision should be made,” the lawmakers stated.

Anambra Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze commended Hon. Nigeria Mbachu for the motion, stating that there is no better society were government will encourage street trading.

“The construction of mini markets in Awka should not be left for government alone. Individuals and cooperate establishments should also assist so that we will have enough,” Udeze said.
